1982-1983 STANLEY CUP FINALS

CapJack Rangers vs. New Castle Ducks
SERIES PREVIEW New Castle Ducks vs. CapJack Rangers – STANLEY CUP FINALS! Madison Oval Garden for Game 1. This was a matchup long discussed this season between Raylesberg and Schindel. Their friendship spanning 25+ years dating back to the days of CSN Baseball. Both teams fought hard to get to the top. During the regular season, it was a 1-2-1 matchup – but the Ducks outscored the Rangers 25-19 and why not when you see their top lines. And the Ducks just dismantled the league’s President Cup winners – Mackinac Island in 6 games

The question facing the Rangers is how to stop Middleton (11 goals), Stastny (9), and Pederson (11). It will be a huge task for Chico Resch (7-0) and the CapJack defense….

GAME #1 As the first game opens, it’s quickly the Ducks who make the first quack. Ramsay (4) fires one over the top of Resch a minute 27 into the game to light the lamp for New Castle!! Both teams then settle in – seemed to settle the home team and they skated even the rest of the period – both teams managed 10 SOG, but the Ramsey goal was it, 1-0 Ducks after 1.

Period 2 however sees the Rangers pressing the attack – they double up the SOGs, firing hard at Billy Smith (15-7 in SOGs). And there were penalties! 4:15 in Snepsts and Ray Allison get into a fight – Allison gets the extra 10 misconduct thrown at him. 12:15 in, Williams (roughing) and Korab (high sticking) go off together. But Pederson (10:11 – holding) and Snepsts (13:18 – roughing) give the Rangers a couple of PPs. And Shutt (5) at 11:21 and Korab (1) at 14:54 take advantage and the Rangers by virtue of the 2 PP goals take a 2-1 lead. But then the refs call a bogus tripping penalty on Larry Robinson (15:06) and the Ducks big scorer Pederson (12) makes the Rangers pay and the period ends tied up at 2-2.

So game 1 comes down to the 3rd period with a fresh even slate – but once again the Rangers are charging hard. New Castle fires 12 shots on Resch, but the Rangers fire 19 at Smith, and at 7:33 DeBlois (6) rips a slap shot past Smith to make it 3-2. The play was started by a Resch clearing pass that earns him an assist! The game moves on with no scoring, both goalies working hard to keep from giving up the one they can’t afford to. Then the Ducks pull Smith with 1:30 to go. Pederson comes on, Tiger Williams trying to make a play but Mike Allison drills him and CapJack comes up with the puck and it gets to Leinonen who fires toward the empty net and it’s a goal, his 3rd and the Rangers have a big 4-2 lead with 1:17 to go. But the last 77 seconds see the Ducks fire 7 shots, 1 blocked by Robinson and 6 Resch saves!!! And the Rangers hang on to game  #1, 4-2!

STARS: (all Cap)
1. Leinonen 1 goal
2. DeBlois 1 goal
3. Resch 27 saves (and an assist)

NOTABLES: Clarke, 20 faceoff wins and Smith 41 saves for NCD, Robinson 3 assists for CAP

GAME #2 New Castle Ducks down 1 game to none look to square things up at Madison Oval Garden as the Rangers host the 2nd game of the 82-83 MWOTHL Stanley Cup Finals. Game 1 featured a big offensive surge by the Rangers to overcome an early Ducks lead. They fired 45 SOG – Ducks managed 29. Game 2 – will it be offensive or a more typical Stanley Cup Final contest…..

The Rangers clamp down more on the Ducks in the opening period limiting them to 6 shots and Chico Resch stops them all. Billy Smith faces 11 from the Rangers and Daoust (4) gets a pass from Cloutier which he tees up as the defense falls apart and it flies past Smith for the game’s first goal. But that was it for the opening period apart from the 1 penalty each team suffered – but the PK teams were up to the task.

In the 2nd period, New Castle tightens up, and early on the momentum begins to shift their way. Then it becomes the Ryan Walter show – the sometimes forgotten member of the Walter-Pederson-Stastny line. 4:14 in after Cloutier loses control, Pederson scoops up the puck, sends it to Walter (8) who fires it past Smith to tie the game. 10 minutes later after Resch makes a great save on a Stastny slap shot, Walter wins the faceoff. Puck goes to Middleton, to Perderson, to Hardy to Walter (9) and he takes the shot and beats Resch with a great shot, and that gives the Ducks the big 2-1 lead! But that’s all anyone will get in the 2nd and the Ducks take the 2-1 lead into the locker room as the teams regroup for period 3. But before they left, Cochran and Williams go off for fighting – Cochrane getting an extra 10 for his troubles. But those are the last penalties of the game. Ducks were 0 for 2 on the PP and the Rangers 0 for 1.

3rd Period actually sees the Ducks do most of the shooting but only by a slim margin (10-8 on goal). But nothing is getting past Resch or Billy Smith as the score remains 2-1 Ducks for the opening 10 minutes of the last period. But as we move into the last half of the period, Stastny skates over center ice – but Robinson hits him hard jarring the puck loose. Daoust gains control and takes it into Ducks territory, passes to Maloney (7) and he fires one glove side high that beats Smith to tie the game. The stands erupt! Feels like the roof will come off. The 105 Ducks fans duck for cover. But the game continues and now both sides are playing very tight, next goal will be huge. Just under 8 to go, Mike Allison is hit while the team is on a rush and he leaves the ice for good skating off on one leg, keeping a hurt knee out of action. Both teams able to get a few shots past the defense but Smith and Resch stop them all. Final two minutes and after a Smith save on Cloutier shot, the DeBlois of the Rangers wins the faceoff. Russell comes up with it, he gets it over to DeBlois who is pressured – he shoots and scores as Smith is again beat glove side high. Rangers take the lead 3-2 on DeBlois’s 7th goal. So with 1:53 to go, how long before Smith leaves the ice? 23 seconds, Pederson again the extra attacker, the puck goes deep into CapJack’s end. Williams digs it out, to Eloranta, to Snepsts, to Ramsey – the scoring chance – but Resch saves it. Savard then blocks a shot at the EN. 1 minute to go, Pederson on the attack but the Rangers turn him back out. He works one to Savard, across the blue line, but again poked back out. 40 seconds left, Stastny over-center but again they are forced to retreat. 26 seconds left, Ramsay gains the zone – but again he’s forced to turn back as the Gold/Purple wall is standing firm. 17 seconds left, Pederson gets it in center ice – hard pass to Savard, he shoots – SC – but it hits Crowder. Savard gets it – Ducks frantically trying to get a shot but they run out of time and CapJack wins game 2 3-2!!
STARS
1. NCD – Walter 2 goals
2. CAP – Maloney 1 goal, 1 assist
3. CAP – Daoust 1 goal, 1 assist

So the Rangers manage to take the opening 2 games in a close hard-fought series. However, as the Moose know, the Ducks are tough on their pond and they are far from being out of this series. Rangers will continue to take the fight to them and hope that Chico and be the Man!!!

The Ducks have their backs against the wall, after losing the first two games of the series at Madison Oval Garden. But now the scene shifts to The Duck Pond where 17,000 quacking fans will be giving their team a boost as New Castle tries to get back into the series.

GAME #3 Cap Jack is all over the Ducks as the first period gets underway, as the Rangers dominate the play and the shots on goal. Then at 6:15 Brad McCrimmon goes off for 2 minutes for the Ducks-and the Ranger’s awesome power play goes to work. The Rangers put on a furious charge in the Ducks zone as Larry Robinson dominates things from the point. Cap Jack puts FIVE shots on goal but Billy Smith stops each and everyone as the Ducks kill the penalty.
After the Ducks kill off another penalty, New Castle gets its first power play at 14:06 when Daoust goes off for hooking. And New Castle capitalizes 44 seconds into the power play when Marian Stastny lights the lamp to make it 1-0 Ducks. The Ducks fans are roaring (or quacking) now and at 16:53 Blomqvist gets a minor penalty and it’s another PP for New Castle. And once again the Ducks strike as Barry Pederson gets his 13th of the playoffs. 2-0 Ducks after one.
SECOND PERIOD – The Ducks are starting to dominate play now and at 3:40 Stastny SCORES AGAIN – his second of the game and 11th of the playoffs and New Castle looks mighty good with a 3-0 lead. Then at 5:07 McCrimmon gets his second penalty of the night. And this time the Rangers take advantage as Steve Shutt beats Smith and it’s 3-1. The Rangers have some life and then comes THE TURNING POINT OF THE GAME. 14 seconds after the Shutt goal Pederson gets a FIVE MINUTE MAJOR FOR SPEARING. What an opportunity for Cap Jack – and they once again take advantage. First, it’s Trottier scoring to make it 3-2, and then, still, on the power play, it’s Ray Allison 27 seconds later TIEING IT UP at 3-3!
The Ducks and their fans are stunned but Marian Stastny brings them back to life as he scores yet again, at 11:44 – a HAT TRICK – and New Castle leads 4-3! It’s a wild one now at the old Barn and Daoust makes it even wilder as he scores at 14:31 to tie it at 4-4. The see-saw continues at 18:09 when checking forward Craig Ramsey puts the puck past John Garrett and New Castle heads to the locker room, once again in the lead by a score of 5-4.
THIRD PERIOD- The third period is a tight-checking affair for the first 10 minutes and things are looking solid for New Castle when Shutt scores his second of the game at 11:37 to tie it ONCE AGAIN, now at 5-5! The clock is winding down and New Castle takes the play into the Rangers zone. Ryan Walter finds Middleton and the sharpshooting RW puts the puck in the net at 16:17. The Ducks have regained the lead yet again, now ahead 6-5 with only 3:43 to go in regulation. New Castle goes into a defensive mode as they try to run out the clock and hold the lead. But the strategy does not work when Lundholm beats Smith at 17:33 and once again the game is tied, at 6-6! Only 2:27 to go now and Overtime looms and then the SECOND BIG TURNING POINT OF THE GAME – inexplicably Ducks defenseman Mark Hardy interferes and gets a 2-minute penalty with 1:14 left in regulation. The Rangers are 3-6 on the power play and the Ducks fans are nervous now, to say the least. But the penalty killers reign supreme as the Rangers struggle to even stay in the Ducks zone. That is until the final rush of the period – as Daoust gets it over to Real Cloutier – he SHOOTS and SCOOOOOOREEEES! With TWO SECONDS REMAINING!! CAP JACK 7 NEW CASTLE 6. The puck is dropped, the buzzer sounds and the Rangers are one win away from the Stanley Cup!THREE STARS:
1- NCD Stastny 3G 1A 4 PTS Hat Trick
2- CAP Shutt 2 G
3- CAP Cloutier 1G 1 ACAP outshoots NCD for the third straight game, this time 34-30. They also have the edge in faceoffs (54.6% DeBlois dominates (9 of 14).
A crushing defeat for the Ducks who were 3:43 away from getting back into the series. Now New Castle has to go where only two teams have gone before, the 1942 Maple Leafs and the 1975 New York Islanders. It will be a mighty tough task for New Castle against a well-balanced, high-scoring, Rangers team.

The Ducks face elimination in Game 4 at The Duck Pond. While the playoffs are usually tight-checking, low-scoring affairs, that was not the case in Game 3 when the two teams combined for 13 goals in a 7-6 CapJack win. The league’s two best power plays combined for 6 goals (4 by CAP) in that one. What will Game 4 bring as the Ducks try to crawl back into the series?

GAME #4 The Rangers get an early opportunity when Ray Allison goes in on a 2 on 1 only to be stonewalled by Billy Smith. Smith has played in every game of the Playoffs and the New Castle press was suggesting that a possibly fatigued Smith be benched in favor of Don Edwards but Coach Raylesberg did not listen and Smith stays in goal for the Ducks.
The Ducks draw first blood when the red hot Marian Stastny scores his fourth goal in three games and it’s 1-0 NCD early in the first. The game then began a familiar pattern as Steve Shutt (also red hot) scored on a power play putting a rebound of a Trottier shot past Smith and it was 1-1. Now the fun would begin. Barry Pederson lights the lamp. 2-1 NCD. Then it’s Shutt again – 2-2. Then it’s Middleton, Then Clarke, and the first period ends with NCD ahead 4-2.
SECOND PERIOD – The Ducks appear to put the game away as Pederson scores his second at 1:54 and Marc Tardif scores at 9;46. 6-2 Ducks. And as if that wasn’t enough Shutt left the ice at 11:07 with bruised ribs after a collision with Bobby Clarke who drew a 4-minute high sticking penalty. Shutt would not return – a big blow to the Rangers. But these are the CapJack guys who won their division and have a 3-0 lead in the Series. A team that takes advantage of penalties and so they do it again. With Clarke off on a double minor, first Trottier and then Lundholm score – two power-play goal 1:31 apart, and suddenly CAPJACK is right back in it at 6-4. A familiar pattern. And the pattern continues as the Ducks rally – Lindstrom makes it 7-4 and the Ryan Walter scores to make it 8-4 still in the second period! Lindstom’s goal was on a 3 on 1 and after the score, Coach Schindel replaced Resch with John Garrett in the net. What’s next? Of course, another goal for CAP as Lucien Deblois gets his 8th of the playoffs, on an odd-man rush, with 52 seconds left in the period. 8-5. And then Mark Hardy goes off for four minutes with another high sticking penalty. These are the Rangers and so they SCORE with 8 seconds to go its Keith Crowder beating Smith and the teams go to the locker room with NCD leading 8-6. WILD is an understatement.
THIRD PERIOD – Will Raylesberg finally pull Smith from the net? No Battling Billy is back out there for the third period. the period opens with the continuation of the power play on the Hardy penalty but the Ducks kill this one-off and continue to lead by 2. It’s a nervous crowd at The Duck Pond. Then at 3:38 Pederson strikes, from Walter and Hardy – it’s a HAT TRICK for Pederson (16 goals in the playoffs!) and NCD again opens up a lead at 9-6. Of course, CAP comes right back as Neufeld gets his first of the playoffs and it’s 9-7, still with more than 13 minutes to go. Plenty of time remaining. But you know the pattern by now – and it’s Ryan Walter scoring at 7:48 to make it 10-7. Now it looks like the Ducks have finally put the Rangers away. But WAIT – Don Maloney scores at 16:36 and now it’s 10-8 with 3:24 to go. Smith looks shaky but he’s staying in there. The clock is ticking down, Garrett is now out of the CAP net, and Lundholm SCORES at 18:49. Holy cow – it is now 10-9 with 1:11 to go and the Rangers are charging. Smith stays in net for New Castle. The Rangers net remains empty. Will the Rangers once again pull off late-game magic? Not this time. Bobby Clarke scores into the empty net to make it 11-9 with 50 seconds to go – and then Clarke adds another empty-net goal (HAT TRICK) with 9 seconds left and New Castle comes away with a 12-9 win!!
During the regular season, no team scored more than 12 goals in a game (MAC did it against NOC) and the most goals in a game by both teams was 17. And this is the playoffs?

3- NCD Walter 2G 3 A 5 PTSKeith Crowder had 4 assists and 5 points. Trottier also had 4 assists and 5 points. Middleton and Walter each had 3 assists Walter won 17 faceoffs out of 24.
CAP outshot NCD for the fourth straight game, 42-40. Ducks had the faceoff edge this time (55.9%)
The Ducks live to play another game after the two teams combined for34 goals in two games at The Duck Pond. Both teams can use the day off between games before playing Game 5 back at Madison Oval Garden where Games 1 and 2 did not see this kind of high scoring. Will Billy Smith return to the goal in Game 4. Will Steve Shutt’s ribs heal in time? Can the Ducks do what only the 42 Maple Leafs and 75 Islanders did before them – and come back from a 3-0 deficit. Game 5 is expected to be played online. It should be a great game!

Stanley Cup Game 5 – Rangers up 3 games to 1 but coming off a tough heartbreaking loss in game where 21 goals were scored, we’re trying to close out this series before finding ourselves losing whatever momentum we had…. But those pesky Ducks quacked their way mightily in the Dallas series coming back from down 2 to win 4 games to 2. Then they beat up the President’s Cup winners – Mackinac Island in 6 games. Once their feathers get ruffled, they fight hard…..

GAME #5 Stats-wise, the first period looked pretty even, but the Ducks were the winners in getting the biscuit in the basket with Lindstrom (6) getting the game’s 1st goal at the midpoint of the period. Just under 2 minutes later, Williams (2) makes it 2-0 as Resch couldn’t stop his attempt. But that’s how the period ended, 2-0 Quacks!

Lindstrom (7) scores his 2nd goal of the game 8 1/2 minutes into period 2, but Russell (4) gets the Rangers on the board 20 seconds later making it 3-1 Ducks. But then something happens to New Castle (energy drinks, superpowers, PEDs – who knows) but they rattle off 3 unanswered goals: Pederson (17), Clarke (8), Savard (2) to make it 6-1 with 2 1/2 to go in the 2nd. Somehow Daoust (6) and the Rangers get one just before the period ends, but down 6-2 at the 2nd intermission doesn’t look good!

AND IT WASN’T! With the Rangers looking to get something going, Robinson was trying hard to keep New Castle off balance, but he was called for hooking early on. Middleton (14) and Co. makes him pay with a power-play goal, 7-2 with 16 minutes to play. Then Walter (12, 13) gets into the scoring act with goals at 7:42 and 16:17 making it a lopsided 9-2!!! And for the longest time in the 3rd, the Rangers only had 1 shot (they ended up with 10 – most came after pulling the goalie (heck it’s not like either of them were doing anything anyway). And then finally with an empty net, Lindstrom (8) scores to complete his hat trick!! And the scoring – final New Castle win 10-2! Yup, 10-2!!
STARS: (all Quacks)
1. Lindstrom 3 goals
2. Walter 2 goals, 2 assists, 18 faceoff wins
3. Clarke 1 goal, 3 assists

And Stastny had 4 assists!

IT didn’t help that New Castle took DeBlois AND Cochrane out of the game with injuries. Game films have been sent to the commissioner’s office to see if any suspensions are in order…

The Cup play moves back to New Castle for game 6 where the Rangers hope to right the ship, but the New Castle Express is firing on NOS – and looks unstoppable.

The Ducks are trying to imitate the 1975 Islanders as they now trail CapJack 3 games to 2 after being down 3 games to 0. Game 6 will be played at The Duck Pond where 17,000 roaring, uh quacking, fans will be on hand to see if the Ducks can force a Game 7. The Ducks offense has really kicked into gear, scoring TWENTY-TWO GOALS in the last two games, to get back in the series!

GAME #6 Checking is tight as the game starts and it’s the Rangers that draw first blood, at 5:41. Lucien DeBlois, having a great postseason, scores his 9th of the playoffs, on a power play, beating Billy Smith and it looks like CapJack will be restoring order. However, these quacking Ducks are very resilient and at 9:18 they tie the game as Marian Stastny takes a pass from Doug Halward and beats Chico Resch, also on a power play. Stastny’s FOURTEENTH goal of the playoffs! Tied 1-1 as the clock winds down on the first period, the Ducks get a break from an unlikely source – as Bob Bourne takes a headman pass from Marc Tardif and slaps it past Resch to make it 2-1 Ducks after one.
SECOND PERIOD – The Ducks come out with their checking line, trying to slow down CapJack’s #1 line of Shutt-Trottier-Crowder, but it’s the checking line doing the scoring! As Andre Savard, assisted by linemates Craig Ramsey and Tiger Williams, lights the lamp to make it 3-1 Ducks. The crowd is going wild now – but DeBlois quiets them down as he scores his second of the game and 10th of the playoffs. The goal, coming at 3:49, makes it 3-2 Ducks – and New Castle fans are nervous now. The Ducks are dominating play as the second period continues but Resch is stopping shot after shot. Finally, at 12:32 Ryan Walter SCORES (#14 of the playoffs) and the Ducks have some breathing room at 4-2. Less than 2 minutes later it’s 5-2 as Captain Bobby Clarke takes a Stastny pass and SCOOOOREEESS. The Ducks are flying (er quacking) now – and two minutes later it’s Barry Pederson putting it past Resch – Pederson’s EIGHTEENTH goal of the playoffs – and suddenly the Ducks have a commanding 6-2 lead. They outshoot CapJack 13-4 in the second period and go to the locker room in very good shape.
THIRD PERIOD- It’s a mountain to climb for the Rangers, and Billy Smith after a very shaky performance in Game 4, is having his second solid game in a row. The only score of the period is by the Ducks, at 9:45 when Walter gets his second of the game, assisted by Pederson and Halward. That makes the final score 7-2 Ducks as Smith makes 24 saves. For the first time in the series, the Ducks outshot the Rangers (34-26). New Castle also won an incredible 71.4% of the faceoffs with Clarke winning 13 of 16 and Walter 15 of 21.THREE STARS:
1- NCD Walter 2 G
2- NCD Stastny 1 G 2 A 3 Pts
3- CAP DeBlois 2 GDoug Halward had 4 assists for the Ducks
The Ducks have made an amazing comeback. Trailing 3 games to 0, they have now tied the series, with wins of 12-9, 10-2, and 7-2. The scores look more like football or baseball scores than hockey, as NCD has scored TWENTY-NINE GOALS in the last three games. Goaltending and defense was a question for CapJack coming into this series and right now the Ducks are flying – and quacking – and are tough to stop. The stage is set for a winner takes all Game 7, which will be played head to head. Coach Schindel will have to figure out a way to stop Walter-Pederson-Middleton and Company. And the Ducks will face a difficult challenge as they try to stop CapJack’s own powerful offense, at Madison Oval Garden. Having won three straight, the Duck’s luck may be running out. Stay tuned for Game 7 of the 1983 Stanley Cup Finals!

It is game seven of the Stanley Cup Finals as the new castle ducks try to become the third team in hockey history to win the cup after trailing three games to none. New castle goes into game seven with a tremendous offensive showing in the last three games. Can Chico Resch, Steve Shutt, and Bryan Trottier turn things around for the rangers?

GAME #7 Things do not start well for the Rangers as only 1:48 in, the Ducks high scoring RW Rick Middleton puts it past Resch, his 15th of the playoffs, and its 1-0 Ducks. But the Rangers aren’t going to go down without a fight and Glen Cochrane gets his first of the playoffs to tie it at 12:07. Then three minutes later Bryan Trottier catches the Ducks on a line change and beats Billy Smith. 2-1 Rangers. The period isn’t over yet and Barry Pederson gets #19 for New Castle to tie it once again – and then with 25 seconds left in the period Marian Stastny gets a BREAKAWAY and SCORES his 15th and the Ducks lead 3-2 at intermission.
SECOND PERIOD- Kari Eloranta goes off with a double minor but the Ducks turn the table and maybe the game when Andre Savard scores SHORTHANDED, on a 2 on 1 with Middleton, to make it 4-2. CapJack gets one back on the power play as Larry Robinson gets his 4th to make it 4-3. Then another turning point as fast skating Bobby Bourne takes the puck in his own end and goes end to end on a breakaway, beating Resch for an unassisted goal -and it’s 5-3! The Rangers are playing aggressively now and peppering Smith with shot after shot. Then another big TURNING POINT as CAPJACK’s Keith Crowder gets a double minor for high sticking. POWER PLAY for the Ducks – and they capitalize. First, Pederson gets his second of the game and 20th of the playoffs to make it 6-3, and 34 seconds later it’s Stastny with his second of the game, and the Ducks take a 7-3 lead after two periods.
THIRD PERIOD- A big hill to climb now for the Rangers but in this wild, high-scoring, playoff series, anything can happen. Sure enough at the 41-second mark, Larry Robinson gets his second of the game and it’s 7-4. Then, less than 2 minutes later another CAPJACK defenseman, Bloomqvist scores his first of the playoffs-unassisted – and suddenly it is 7-5 with nearly EIGHTEEN MINUTES to go. The Rangers fans are roaring now and the nervousness on the Ducks bench is readily apparent. CAPJACK had a 22-18 SOG advantage through two and they are pounding away now at Billy Smith in the Duck’s goal. The checking is tight and the play is fast and furious as the Ducks go into a defensive mode and are keeping the Rangers off the scoreboard. Then – the BACKBREAKER – at 11:12, Mark Hardy shoots from the blue line and Ryan Walter deflects it past Resch. to make it 8-5! The Rangers come right back and get the odd-man rush – Bill Russell goes right in on Smith and it’s a SAVE! Wow. Back come the Ducks and Middleton does it again – with his second of the game – and now it is 9-5 and it’s all but over for the Rangers. 6:40 to go. Don Maloney shoots at Smith and Ray Allison deflects it past Battlin Billy and it’s 9-6! The Rangers have a pulse with 6 minutes to go. The Rangers keep pressing and the Ducks keep breaking up plays. With less than 2 minutes to go, Resch is out of the net – and it’s Willy Lindstrom icing things with an empty-net goal at 18:54. The clock runs out and the NEW CASTLE DUCKS ARE MWOTHL STANLEY CUP CHAMPIONS!THREE STARS:

SERIES SUMMARY New Castle DucksTHE DUCKS WIN THE STANLEY CUP! The Conn Smythe MVP trophy goes to Center Barry Pederson who scored 20 goals and 39 points in 19 playoff games. His #1 line scored 52 goals in the 19 games as Walter and Middleton each had 16 goals. Stastny had 16 as well, as the Ducks had the six highest scorers in the playoffs. And defenseman Doug Halward led all skaters with 23 assists. New Castle averaged 5.84 goals scored in the playoffs and 4.84 against. CapJack averaged 4.72 for and 5.22 against. Smith had a GAA of 4.75. Resch ended at 4.50. The Duck’s offense proved to be too much for Cap Jack and despite the stats, Smith outplayed Resch when it counted.
Congratulations to CapJack coach Bill Schindel on a great season, with thanks for playing a number of the games, including the deciding Game 7, online.
