Clearfield Bison | Only one home game again this week for the division-leading Bison. With a desperate Corktown team coming to town, could Clearfield hold serve? |
Corktown Suds @ Clearfield Bison | This was a game with a ton of shots, chances, and momentum shifts.
Clearfield struck early as Jordan Weal – subbing for a resting Bryan Little – scored just 3 minuts into the game. When TJ Brodie blasted one home 5 minutes later, it seemed that the home team had things well in hand. Not so fast, my friend!! From about the 10-minute mark of the first through the 15-minute mark of the second, Corktown completely dominated play, scoring three times to take the lead. The most surprising was Radko Gudas scoring – while driving to the net and beating both D – on a power play (my suspension of disbelief goes only so far 😉 The Bison then turned the tide, mounting a late push to tie the score after two periods. The third saw a lot of action – Corktown peppered Andersen with 20 shots, but most were from the outside…Clearfield generated 5 scoring chancces, but could not beat Hutton. Finally, with just over a minute to go in the period…young Weal struck again, giving Clearfield the lead and setting the final score. Clearfield won 2/3 of the faceoffs, and out-chanced the Suds 12-8, but Corktown controlled just about every other stat (outshot us 46-28, attempts were 66-59, more zone time, 2-2 on PP). The difference looked to be on the blueline and in goal. Corktown is LOADED up front, and with a goalie upgrade and another stud blueliner they could be a team to watch. 3 stars: #1 Weal 2G 1A #2 Brodie 1G 1A +4 #3 Anderson 43 saves |
Weekly Summary: | Clearfield wins another squeaker and deals a blow to Corktown’s fading division hopes. Now we wait to hear how the 3 road games went. |
Hampton Blizzard | One home game as Hampton tries to get its ice time in order with a test this week against Chicago. |
Chicago Cosa Nostra @ Hampton Blizzard | The game was pretty much all Chicago with the Cosa Nostra heavily outshooting Hampton, but Antti Raanta kept the Blizzard in the game while shaky goaltending by Mike Condon staked Hampton to a 5-0 lead.
Eventually the dam burst however and the 5-0 lead at the end of the 2nd period turned into a 5-4 game with 90 seconds to go. Chicago continued to pelt Raanta with shots, but the puck stayed out of the net and the game ended 5-4. An EXTREMELY frustrating game to watch as the Auto Lines function continues to screw over the Blizzard despite them having the same line settings as the Cosa Nostra and while the 1st Chicago line averaged about 18 minutes the Blizzard’s line of Forsberg-Malkin-Rantanen barely managed to reach 12 minutes with only two shifts played all of the 3rd period, Something is fucked up once again with playing time or the AI just plain hates Filip Forsberg as it did the same thing to him last season. Ah well. Anyway … enough whining about the continuing weirdness of this game. Goal scoring: Shots: |
Weekly Summary: | Hampton barely hangs on for 2 points against gritty Chicago. |
Bucks County Racoons | The Racs host the high flying Columbus Brew Jackets in an attempt to get some 2nd half momentum…… |
Columbus Brew Jackets @ Bucks County Racoons | Fueled by 2 goals in the first 5:35 of the game, the Columbus Brew Jackets utilized 8 PP opportunities to throttle the Bucks County Raccoons 4-1. Nikita Kucherev notched 2 goals for the visiting Brew Jackets to earn first star of the game, Logan Coture was named 2nd star due to his goal in the first and adding an assist, and Chad Johnson netted 3rd star of the game while allowing only 1 goal. Although Bucks County out shot Columbus, the game never felt like the Raccoons were in control at any time…. |
Weekly Summary: | Disappointing week due to a spiritless loss to Columbus in the only home game of the week. |
Weekly Preview: | Jagr hosts 3 games this week. Forecast: lots of goals, for and against. |
LA Great Danes @ Jagr Mullets | The Great Danes come to town and pee all over the Mullets.
Not much to say, other than total doggie domination and a 3-0 shutout. Former Mullet Jussi Jokinen gets the GWG against his former team, and another former Mullet (John Carlson) gets a pair of assists on two late Toffoli goals. Star 1: LGD Andersen 36 saves GWG: Jussi Jokinen Notables: LGD Pietrangelo 5 blocks, Andersen 36 saves |
California Regulators @ Jagr Mullets | Jagr takes an early 2-1 lead thanks to goals from McGinn (1) on a breakaway and Granlund (12). But then the Regulators strap up and score 4 unanswered goals to take command of the game. Gaborik (2) gets a goal early in the 3rd to save a little face, but California’s colors rule the day in a 6-3 victory.
Jonathan Quick takes his first loss of the season, in bloody fashion. Star 1: CAL Trouba 2 G, 4 Pts GWG: Jakob Silfverberg Notables: CAL Grubauer 44 saves |
Bucks County Racoons @ Jagr Mullets | Connor McDavid and Bucks County come to town licking their chops after Jagr’s pedestrian efforts in the previous two games.
And when Milan Lucic (10) scores at 2:09 of the 1st, it appears that the home fans will be subjected to another laugher. But the Mullets show some resolve, and score 4 unaswered goals: Hall (11), Schultz (5), Laine (20), and Schultz again (6). Leading 4-1 with less than two minutes left, Jagr gives up a goal to Kane (8) and the crowd puckers up. Bucks County pulls the goalie, and scores 24 seconds later (Johansson, his 13th). WHAT. It’s 4-3 and Jagr is reeling. Some how, some way they withstand a Bucks County barrage over the final 90 seconds and hold on 4-3. Even when the Mullets win, it’s ugly. It’s been that kind of season. |
Weekly Summary: | Jagr captures 2 of a possible 6 points, and as usual scores a bunch of goals and gives up even more. The bright spot is that next year the team is stacked thanks to big seasons up and down the roster. But it’s going to be painful getting there. |
Alamo Defenders | Bucks County from the Central comes to play Alamo. Gilbert represents the Pacific. |
Bucks County Racoons @ Alamo Defenders | Penalties were big in this game. The Racoons convert 3 of 4 power play chances. Alamo doubles the Racoons shot totals, 36-18. Bucks County was leading, 4-1. Alamo fights back with 3 goals. But, with 49 seconds left, Lucic nets a goal, and the Racoons prevail.
Bucks County 5 Alamo 4 1st star – Seguin (Alamo) 2 goals |
Gilbert Sharks @ Alamo Defenders | The Defenders get on track early in this game to recover from their earlier loss. Karlsson scores 1 for Alamo, but Giordano ties the game for the Sharks. Alamo, then, gets 4 unanswered goals. Alamo outshoots Gilbert, 35-22.
Alamo 5 Gilbert 1 1st star – Karlsson 1 goal; 2 assists |
Weekly Summary: | Bucks County gets 2 points on the road at Alamo. The Defenders recover by defeating Gilbert, 5-1. |
Long Beach Ice Dogs | |
Lakeland Flying Tigers @ Long Beach Ice Dogs | The Long Beach offense came alive as they won 8-3. Faulk had 2 goals and 1 assist and Marner had a goal and 3 assists to lead the way. |
Corktown Suds @ Long Beach Ice Dogs | After Long Beach took a 3-2 lead half way through the first period, Corktown scored 3 unanswered goals and won 5-4. Monahan had 2 goals to lead the Suds. |
LA Great Danes @ Long Beach Ice Dogs | The Great Danes scored 6 goals on just 22 shots and rolled to a 6-3 win. Schenn had 2 goals and Schiefele had a goal and 2 assists to lead the way. |
Game #4 – Visiting Team: | California Regulators |
Game #4 – Home Team: | California Regulators |
Weekly Summary: | Long Beach had 3 games against playoff teams and managed just 1 win. |
Thunder Bay Nor’Westers | Thunder Bay Offense has been competitive, the defense solid but not dominant but out goaltending has been very erratic. Both Ben Bishop and James Reimer have had some good games but both are playing poorly more often than strong. Without a change the Nor’Westers will be closed out of the playoffs. Rumors abound that they are talking trades around the league. |
Clearfield Bison @ Thunder Bay Nor’Westers | Clearfield scores twice in the opening period – Hjarlmasson(6) and Rakell(19) to take a 2-1 lead – Pominville (1). Both teams score a goal in the 2nd period Bergeron(12) for the Bisons and Saad(10) for the Nor’Westers. After 40 minutes Clearfield leads 3-2.
The 3rd period is decisive as Clearfield takes the win and 2 points with goals by Chimera(4), Drouin(14) and Pominville(2) for the home team. Final score 5-3 Ben Bishop had a stinker with a .839 save %. |
Minneapolis Deep Freeze @ Thunder Bay Nor’Westers | After the loss the night before Thunder Bay was flat. The Deep Freeze dominated the whole game winning 5-2 on goals by Spezza(8), Siedenberg(1), Hossa(16), Turris(12) and Chara(9).
The Nor’Westers called up Calvin Pickard to play in goal in hopes he would spark the team or threaten Bishop/Reimer. Pickard failed posting at .857 save% |
Hampton Blizzard @ Thunder Bay Nor’Westers | Atlantic division rival Hampton comes to town. 0-0 after 20 minutes. Thunder Bay opens the scoring when Tatar(10) scores the only goal of the 2nd period. Ben Bishop is playing strong.
The 3rd period is all Thunder Bay scoring 3 goals enroute to a 4-1 victory. Goals by Vesey(4) |
Weekly Summary: | More of the same – 1 win to 2 losses. Goalies 2 stinkers one strong outing. Thunder Bay is anchored near the bottom of the Atlantic with little opportunity to make a charge into the playoffs. |
Bathgate Rangers | Bathgate has actually played decently of late and they try to keep it up again this week. Home against Thunder Bay (not the team they were last year) and Columbus – big rivalry and the Brew Jackets are in the big time hunt for best team in the league. |
Thunder Bay Nor’Westers @ Bathgate Rangers | Rangers outshot and outplayed the Nor’Westers through the 1st two periods and skated to a 2-0 lead, the 2nd of those goals coming on a PP with 26 seconds left in the 2nd period. But then Saad nets a PP goal 2 minutes into the 3rd and we have a hockey game. But the defenses really kicked in (or lack of offense) and there was no more scoring in the game. Rinne hung tough and Howard was equally good the rest of the way. 3rd period only saw a total of 14 shot between the two teams. FINAL 2-1 Bathgate Stars (all BRG) 1. Shaw – goal 2. Killorn – goal 3. Klingberg – 2 assists |
Columbus Brew Jackets @ Bathgate Rangers | Brew Jackets skating well and for this game they activated Letang and Liles to bolster their defense defensively and add a little more offensive punch. It helped. However … Rangers have been playing well, and with the prospect of another rivaly game (and hopefully win) they started out very strong outshooting the Brew Jackets 12-7 in the 1st. And Klingberg (5) and Staal (10) found the back of the net for a 2-0 lead. BUT – that was the highlights for Bathgate. Columbus then put their skates on (oh, did I mention they were in sneakers for the 1st period). Carlo (3), Ladd (12), Burns (13) and Letang (1) get 2nd period goals. And then Sheary (25) and Strome (4) get a couple more in the 3rd to give the Jackets a resounding 6-2 win. Home fans leave with heads down. Stars (all CBJ) 1. Burns 1 goal 2 assists 2. Sheary 1 goal 3. Strome 1 goal |
Weekly Summary: | Bathgate gets a split at home, 2-1 over Thunder Bay, 6-2 loss to Columbus. |
Gilbert Sharks | Gilbert has 2 home games against Bathgate and Clearfield |
Bathgate Rangers @ Gilbert Sharks | Ryan Getzlaf opens the scoring for Gilbert and gives them a 1-0 lead after 1 period. Bathgate dominates the 2nd period geting goals from Ferland, Karlsson and Shaw to take a 3-1 lead. Pekka Rinne shuts Gilbert down the rest of the game and Bathgate gets the 3-1 victory. |
Clearfield Bison @ Gilbert Sharks | Clearfield comes into this one heavily favored. Drew Doughty scores on a slap shot just over a minute into the game and it looks like it could be a long day for Gilbert. Both Goalies are outstanding for this one and the 1-0 score holds up until midway through the 3rd Period when Nathan Mackinnon gets a pass from Cam Atkinson and drives and scores to tie the game at 1. We go to overtime and still no one can score. Rakell scores for Clearfield to lead off the shootout but Atkinson scores for Gilbert in their first attempt. Rask denies Neal on Clearfield’s 2nd attempt and Artemi Panarin puts a 2nd goal in for Gilbert. Patrick kane steps up to attempt to tie it up for Clearfield but Rask gets another big save and Gilbert gets the upset in the shootout. |
Weekly Summary: | Gilbert escapes with a 1-1 record at home in Block 11 with a big upset over Clearfield. |
Lakeland Flying Tigers | 2 Home games for the Flying Tigers this block. Alamo & Bucks County |
Alamo Defenders @ Lakeland Flying Tigers | Lakeland 3, Alamo 2. OT
Lakeland is outplayed in regulation, but Jones holds out for his life and The Tigers come up big in OT. |
Bucks County Racoons @ Lakeland Flying Tigers | Bucks Co. 5, Lakeland 4.
Jones couldn’t stop anything when it matters and Bucks County plays a tough game down the stretch in the 3rd period. |
Weekly Summary: | Flying Tigers split at home, better then some of our past weeks. |
LA Great Danes | Crosby, Tavares, Kessel come to town as the Danes host league-leading Brentwood in the only home game of the week. A playoff atmosphere, with division leaders facing off in the bayou. |
Brentwood Bandits @ LA Great Danes | The Great Danes strike first as Jamie Benn cashes in on the power play midway through period 1, but the Bandits respond quickly as Jake Guentzel blows a slapshot by Frederik Andersen 2 minutes later. In period 2, the stars on each team take a back seat to the 3rd-4th liners as Lars Eller and Nick Bonino score deflection goals for LA to take a 3-1 lead 12 minutes into the period. LA’s penalty killers have to do the rest of the work in the 2nd, killing off a 4-minute high sticking penalty over the last 5 minutes. LA is up 3-1 after 2, but a Lars Eller penalty at 19:55 gives the Bandits a chance to get back into the game as they start the 3rd period on the power play. The Danes get a big kill, and when they get a PP chance of their own, Mark Scheifele makes them pay with a PPG from Bonino and Chiasson at 8:23. The Great Danes keep the Bandits at bay the rest of the way enroute to a 4-1 victory.
The Danes were up for this one, and it was a strong 60-minute effort as they outchanced Brentwood 16-2 for the game and 11-0 over the final 2 periods. Frederick Andersen was solid in net with 31 saves but wasn’t under a lot of sustained pressure on the night. Nick Bonino with 1G-1A, Alex Chiasson with 2A, and Lars Eller with the GWG provided some depth scoring in this one. Special teams were key, as the Danes go 2-3 on the PP and 4-4 on the PK. |
Weekly Summary: | A big week for the Great Dane, Frederick Andersen. Along with a home win versus the Bandits, Andersen won 2 road games this week, with backup Steve Mason getting the nod in the Danes’ pending road game this week. Andersen saved 99 of 103 shots on the week and got his 5th shutout of the season, on the road versus Jagr. |
California Regulators | |
Hampton Blizzard @ California Regulators | Hampton strikes early and often, beating host California 6-3. |
Weekly Summary: | California drops another homestand. |
Corktown Suds | Corktown Suds |
Toledo Walleye @ Corktown Suds | Toledo 4-1 |
Lakeland Flying Tigers @ Corktown Suds | Corktown 2-1 |
Weekly Summary: | Corktown gets 2 points at home this week |
Columbus Brew Jackets | Brew Jackets host 2 home games this week against Chicago and Alamo |
Chicago Cosa Nostra @ Columbus Brew Jackets | The Brew Jackest got a little complacent in this one and assumed the worst team in the league wouldn’t put up much of a fight. And they drank a little too many pre game beers. Not yet sluggish from the beer, CBJ put in the first goal and then went down hill from there. Chicago put 2 in in the 2nd and added an empty netter in the 3rd.
FINAL SCORE: CHI 3 – CBJ 1 |
Alamo Defenders @ Columbus Brew Jackets | Alamo opened the scoring early, but were answered by 3 straight CBJ goals. Going into the 3rd period, it was 3-2 CBJ. Alamo tied it up early in the 3rd and then scored a power play goal late to seal a 4-3 victory.
FINAL SCORE: ALA 4 – CBJ 3 |
Weekly Summary: | CBJ loses 2 at home. Really need to get out of slump to maintain strong playoff push. |
Brentwood Bandits | Busy week. Three home games. Let’s see how it plays out. |
Minneapolis Deep Freeze @ Brentwood Bandits | Minneapolis comes to town and freezes the Bandits to the tune of a 2-1 Minnesota Shoot-Out victory. |
Toledo Walleye @ Brentwood Bandits | The Toledo Walleye went fishing and got caught by the bandits 2nd line pairing of Tavares and Marleau. Final score 6-4 Brentwood wins. |
California Regulators @ Brentwood Bandits | The Regulators mounted up, but fell to Brentwood 3-2. Kessel continues to like his new home with a goal and two assists. |
Weekly Summary: | Busy times, not enough for long recaps… but a good week as the Bandits get 5 of 6 points at home. |
Minneapolis Deep Freeze | Minneapolis enters the week locked in a 3-way tie atop their division with Toledo and Bucks County. The Deep Freeze will play one home game this week against a Pacific division foe – the Gilbert Sharks. |
Gilbert Sharks @ Minneapolis Deep Freeze | Gilbert Sharks @ Minneapolis Deep Freeze
Minneapolis controls to start the game, getting the first 5 shots on goal before Gilbert goes to the powerplay with Marchessault in the box. After a brief moment of pressure in the Deep Freeze zone, Byron knocks Josi off the puck and Pavelski takes it the other way for Minneapolis. All alone with Rask, he dekes and puts it over the goalie’s shoulder for the shorthanded goal on his team-leading 16th of the year. Minneapolis would get another shorthanded chance when Aho, Markov, and Orpik get loose for a 3-on-1 break, but this time Rask stones Orpik. The Sharks finally mounts some pressure with the rest of the powerplay, but doesn’t break through Bobrovsky. The teams go back and forth for about 10 minutes before Marchessault (16) blasts one from the point that beats Rask to take a 2-0 lead and tie himself with Pavelski for the team lead. At the end of the first period, Minneapolis leads 2-0 despite being outshot 16-10 in the period. More isn’t always better in this case, as Minneapolis has 6 chances to Gilbert’s 0. Minneapolis self-destructs to start the second period as Chara takes 2 minutes for cross-checking and the team follows it up with too many men on the ice 30 second later. Somehow the Deep Freeze kill off the penalties while allowing only two shots on goal. Only 45 seconds after returning to even strength, Minneapolis is back in the box after Byron hits Ryan into the boards from behind. 30 seconds into the penalty kill, Minneapolis finds themselves with the puck in the Gilbert zone and Hossa (16) makes it 3-0 with the second shorthanded goal of the night for the Deep Freeze. The Sharks have been outscored 2-0 when on the powerplay tonight. Minneapolis must be enjoying playing shorthanded because not long after Byron returns to the ice, Pavelski takes 4 minutes for a gruesome high-stick to the face of Engelland. Neither team scores on that powerplay, but Gilbert peppers Bobrovsky with shots for much of the 4 minutes. The Sharks finally get on the board when Voracek (7) put on top-shelf off a perfect pass from Stepan. Each team scores 1 goal in the second period, but the play was by no means even. Gilbert outshot Minneapolis 16-6 during those 20 minutes, as the Deep Freeze spent exactly half of the period shorthanded. Almost 10 minutes pass in the third period without anything eventful, before Gagner (6) makes it 4-1 in favor of the Deep Freeze with a 2-on-1 rush from Chara. Minneapolis gets the win courtesy of a dominant performance from Bobrovsky and two shorthanded goals. Scoring Summary SOG 1 SOG 2 SOG 3 GIL MIN Star 1: MIN Bobrovsky 42 saves GWG: Jon Marchessault Notables: GIL None |
Weekly Summary: | Minneapolis wins their only home game of the week courtesy of a dominant performance from Bobrovsky. |
Toledo Walleye | Just one home game this week as Toledo (18-18-4-40) hosts the Mullets (20-16-4-44) at the midpoint of the season. Toledo hopes to continue their climb in the Central Division, but 3 road games could turn the tide. The Walleye really need this home win to avoid a potential loss of momentum. |
Jagr Mullets @ Toledo Walleye | Toledo 4, Jagr 3. – Toledo scores early, and keeping the heat on, pushes the score to 3-0 by the middle of the 2nd period. Vanek scores the first and assists on the other 2 by Mantha, just back from injury. Jagr responds and is able to keep the puck in the Toledo end most the rest of the game, with Hall, Ovechkin and Nurse evening the score at 3-3 with 5 minutes left. The Mullets seem to run out of gas, and Toledo is able to get some scoring chances in the offensive zone, with van Riemsdyk scoring with just under 2 minutes left. 1st star – Mantha 2G 2nd star – Vanek 1G 2A 3rd star – Hall 1G 1A |
Weekly Summary: | Toledo wins their only home game of the week in a close one over Jagr 4-3. Leading all players was Vanek with 1 goal and 2 assists. |
