Bathgate Rangers Bathgate made a lot of moves this past week trading away Evgeni Malkin and the MWHL’s all time leading scorer, Patrick Kane. Several players left and the Rangers are hoping new defensman P.K. Subban can help shore up the defense and new forwards Hornqvist, Shaw and Killorn hope to make contributions. This week the Rangers host two games, New Jersey and Chicago – both current cellar dwellers, let’s see who can be the best of the worst.
New Jersey Grizzlies @ Bathgate Rangers Rangers start out the game dominating play and out shooting the Grizzlies 16-7 in the 1st. And it resulted in a power play goal from newcomer Killorn assisted by Karlsson and Klingberg. Killorn continues to work PP magic in the 2nd period as he sets up Josh Anderson to make it 2-0 – new forward Shaw also assists. Near the end of period 2, the Rangers make it 3-0 when another newcomer scores his first Ranger goal – Buchnevich

So Rangers go into the 3rd up 3-0, a familiar scenario, score early then pray for defense. Usually the defense doesn’t last. And this game it looks like that will be the case again. After the 1st period shooting drought by the Grizzlies, they turn that around and the onslaught in period 3, 18-5, leads to NJ goals by Eberle (16:29 point) and then with the goalie riding the bench, Gionta scores with 18 seconds to go. BUT that was it, the charge ran out of time and steam and the Rangers win 3-2.
STARTS (all Rangers)
1. Killorn 1 Goal, 1 assist
2. Rinne 34 saves
3. Anderson 1 goal
NOTABLES – Karrlson 2 assists 5 blocks. Proverov 6 blocks

Chicago Cosa Nostra @ Bathgate Rangers Chicago brings an attack to Bathgate, out shooting the Rangers 38-25 in the game. And they scored a PP goal in the 1st when Galchenyuk works one past Nilsson. However, sandwiched around that 1st period Chicago goal were a couple of Rangers scores – Anderson assisted by new guys Subban and Shaw and Wood with 1 second left in the 1st, assisted by Provorov and Buchnevich. And that was all the scoring – in spite of the 18 Chicago shots in period 3, the home-team defense held.
Stars (All BGR)
1. Nilsson 37 saves
2. Anderson 1 goal
3. Wood 1 goal
Weekly Summary: Rangers can’t complain with 2 wins in 2 games even if playing the other league cellar dwellers. Fans were concerned about the deal, but perhaps the 1st week’s success will hold off any major complaints. The Future, The Future keeps coming out of the Team’s home office, and maybe there is hope for a long good future.

Hampton Blizzard Fresh off landing Evgeni Malkin from the Bathgate Rangers, the Hampton Blizzard were hoping to have their investment pay immediate dividends and spark one of the league’s weakest offences as the Blizzard host its divisional rivals – the New Jersey Grizzlies, scrappy central division’s Toledo Walleye and defending Cup champions California Regulators.
New Jersey Grizzlies @ Hampton Blizzard Unfortunately for the visiting Grizzlies, this game was over almost before it began with New Jersey taking some costly undisciplined penalties and Cory Scheider imploding in nets.
It was horror show from the word “Go” for Schneider as Shayne Gostisbehere’s slapshot from the point handcuffed him and bounced off his trapper and into the net on the Blizaard’s first shot at 2:04 of the First Period.
It didn’t get much better from here on in.
At just under the 10-minute mark with Blizzard defenceman Beaulieu sitting out for holding, Vincent Trocheck intercepted a cross blueline pass by Sedin and raced down the ice on a 3-on-2 with Backlund and Gostisbehere, banking the puck in off the post for a short-handed goal and a 2-0 Hampton lead (it was Hampton’s 4th shot of the game).
With just under 5 minutes to go in the opening period, a faceoff deep in the New Jersey zone ended with Filip Forsberg rifling home a wrist shot from point bank range on a nifty pass from new linemate Malkin to make it 3-0.
That was it for First Period scoring with the Grizzlies getting the edge in shots 13-10.
The Second Period saw the Blizzard shift into defensive mode after Mikko Rantanen fired one past Schneider just two minutes into the period to put the home team up 4-0.
Shifting into defensive mode this early got Hampton what they deserved and despite trying to grind through the rest of the game, the Blizzard’s Paul Stastny got a little two uppity late in the 2nd period and the Grizzlies made him pay by scoring a minute into the power play on a blast by Captain James T. Shattenkirk (with a last name that can only be made by melting James T Kirk with William Shatner you gotta know his family were Trekkies) which made it 4-1.
The goal gave the Grizzlies some life and only some dandy goaltending by Carey Price kept them from drawing closer after a flurry of shots from close in late in the 2nd period.
The 3rd period was marked by tight checking with the Blizzard resorting to the occasional lone forechecker. the strategy not only kept the Grizzlies from doing much past the Hampton blueline but it severely pissed off Dustin Byfulien who nearly decapitated poor Christian Dvorak in his first game of the season. Byfuglien got a double-minor for his efforts and Forsberg cashed in with his 2nd goal of the game on the power play to make it 5-1.
Anders Lee added insult to injury on a shot from the point late in the period and that was it … Hampton came away with a 6-1 win with Malkin only getting one point but inspiring the team I guess.

Toledo Walleye @ Hampton Blizzard With chants of “Squish the Fish” raining down on the ice the Toledo Walleye skated into the Blizzard den and gave the fans one of the best-played games of hockey seen this season with end-to-end action, great goaltending and very few whistles.
The Walleye outshot the Blizzard 14-12 in the wild opening period but both Hampton’s Antti Raanta and Toledo’s Aaron Dell were perfect and nothing was getting by them.
The action stayed tight in the second period but with Hampton opening things up a bit in the latter part of the period and were rewarded when Mikael Backlund slapped one through Dell’s legs from just outside the slot area in front of the net to give Hampton the lead.
Smelling blood, the Hampton shooters poured it on and wound up outshooting the Walleye 15-7 in the period, but the Backlund goal would be the only mistake Dell made.
Barely into the 3rd period, a quick line-change by Hampton resulted in 4th line winger Oliver Bjorkstrand skating monetarily with 2nd liners Anders Lee and Vincent Trocheck and as the French say … “le voila!” Bjorkstrand took a nifty pass from Lee in the corner and fired it high over Dell’s shoulder and under the crossbar to make it 2-0.
Toledo kicked things into gear then and took over for much of the rest of the period, making it 2-1 on a give-and-go play when James van Riemsdyk banked in Niklas Backstrom’s pass through the crease 7 minutes into the period.
Dell was victimized by a rare defensive breakdown in his own end that ended with Backlund knocking a bouncing puck out of mid-air and over his outstretched glove to make it 3-1 Hampton with 8 minutes to go.
Toledo responded by throwing a wave of fish at the Blizzard following the ensuing faceoff and made it a one-goal game again only 32 seconds later when Joel Ward sizzled a drive past Raanta’s blocker and into the Hampton net.
… but that was as close as they would come as Hampton didn’t lose a faceoff in the final five minutes of the game and came away with a 3-2 win.Scoring Summary:

California Regulators @ Hampton Blizzard The California Regulators swarmed the Hampton Blizzard from the opening faceoff like 1000 wasps over a busted case of Coors outshooting them 16-5 in the opening frame with the home team getting all of one … count ’em … one shot in the first 10 minutes.
Fortunately for the Blizzard, Canadians are great lovers of beer … especially one of the finest US varieties … spot starter Brock Boeser (himself an American, I believe) opened the scoring with just under five minutes left in the first period to give Hampton the lead on a nice wrist shot from the faceoff circle that beat Grubauer.
White hot Mikael Backlund scored 39 seconds into the 2nd period to make it 2-0 for Hampton, but early in the 3rd period Jakob Silfverberg connected on a tip in on a shot by Brock Nelson to cut the lead back to one.
Andrei Burakovsky made it 3-1 at around the 10-minute mark on a slapper from the blueline and then 14 seconds later, a borderline berserk Victor Stralman got called for highsticking Boeser and his trip to the penalty box turned out to be catastrophic as Trocheck and Rantanen both scored on the power plays to make it a 5-1 blowout.
Evgeni Malkin got his first goal as a Blizzard with just over 6 minutes left on a tip in of Boeser’s shot and that was the end of it as a close game disintegrated into a 6-1 smackdown in the blink of an eye (OK, four goals in four minutes…artisitic licence).
Califnornia’s Jonathan Huberdeau deserved mention as playing as a man possessed – all over the ice stealing pucks and hitting skaters.Scoring Summary:

Stars:
1. HAM, Price 36 saves
2. HAM, Backlund 1 goal, 1 assist
3. HAM, Boeser 1 goals, 1 assist
Weekly Summary: Hampton comes away with a perfect 3-game home stand with the offense finally kicking into gear for 15 goals in the three games. The gameplay in all three games was close with the score being deceptive in game one vs New Jersey (Cory Schneider shit the bed) and in game three (Stralman’s double minor that gutted the Regulators).

Chicago Cosa Nostra Chicago with two homes games for the week.
Columbus Brew Jackets @ Chicago Cosa Nostra November 27th, 2017

Chicago keeps it close thanks to 28 saves by Mike Condon. However Connor Hellebuyck, picked up the #1 Star & made 22 saves on 23 Cosa Nostra shots to pick up the win for the Bison.

Final Score: Clearfield 2 – Chicago 1

Corktown Suds @ Chicago Cosa Nostra Corktown gets one early in the 3rd & seals it with an empty netter with under 30 seconds to play.

Final Score: Corktown 2 – Chicago 0

Columbus Brew Jackets @ Chicago Cosa Nostra Chad Johnson made 30 saves in the shutout as the Brew Jackets picked up the win. Mike Condon was awful as was the Chicago Defense. Columbus only gets 19 shots on net but puts 5 behind the Chicago netminder.

Final Score: Columbus 5 – Chicago 0

Weekly Summary: Chicago struggles at home this week and looks to be on the way to the cellar for good in the Central Division.

Long Beach Ice Dogs
Bucks County Racoons @ Long Beach Ice Dogs This was a scoreless game until Lindholm scored a power play goal 2:30 into the 3rd period giving Long Beach a 1-0 lead. Bucks County tied the game with 9 minutes left on McDavid’s 11th goal of the season. Gallagher gave Long Beach the lead for good with 1 minute left. Skinner added an empty netter to make the final score 3-1. Talbot had 35 saves in winning his 10th game of the year.

Stars:
1. Talbot
2. Lindholm
3. Gallagher

Lakeland Flying Tigers @ Long Beach Ice Dogs Long Beach had a 1-0 lead on a 1st period goal by Zetterberg when Oshie tipped in the tying goal 40 seconds into the 3rd period. It stayed 1-1 into OT when Nash scored the winning goal in the Ice Dogs 2-1 win.

Stars:
1. Talbot
2. Nash
3. Gallagher

Weekly Summary: Long Beach continues to struggle offensively but wins both their home games behind excellent goal tending by Talbot

Corktown Suds 1 Home game this week for Corktown
LA Great Danes @ Corktown Suds A couple teams with winning records go at it. Down 2 The Great Danes scores two goals in the 3rd, and another just 18 seconds into OT to take the 2 points. Benn (8) scored the game winner 2nd of the game.

LA 4-3 OT

Weekly Summary: Corktown gets 1 point at home this week.

Brentwood Bandits Brentwood has one home game this week. We have noticed that Crosby is only getting 13-15 minutes of ice time on the road. Not acceptable. We have made some changes to the coach settings in the hopes that this will be remedied starting NEXT week. Unless anyone has not played their home games against Brentwood yet and would be amenable to receiving a new coaches file?
LA Great Danes @ Brentwood Bandits A good LA team comes to Brentwood looking to derail the steady balanced team.

Period One

Niederreiter gets things started with a wraparound at 15:08 with his 7th on the season.

A little over 3:30 later Carlson (4) ties it up on a slapper from the point.

Period Two

Crosby scores the only goal of the period potting his 13th of the season.

Period Three

LA comes out FIRING but can’t seem to solve Gibson (out-shooting Brentwood 11-4 in the 3rd).

LA pulls their goalie. A face-off in Brentwood zone with 4.5 seconds left. LA wins the draw and pulls it back, pass to Scheifele, shoots… SCORES! Ties it up with ONE SECOND LEFT!

We go to OT!

A little back and forth until Marleau “penetrates” and roofs the pack past Andersen for his 7th of the season to send the Brentwood fans home happy!

Great game!

Weekly Summary: Brentwood wins their only home game this week, but has found a potential improvement to the team in settings that prevented Sid from getting the proper ice-time. Let’s hope they have solved it for next week!

Also – rumors of a deal swirling. Stay tuned!

LA Great Danes The Great Danes have been solid defensively, #3 ranked in the league with the lowest SOG against, but a #16 ranked offense and league-worst power play left the Danes searching for ways to improve in the trade market. The acquisition of John Carlson, Nick Bonino, and Patrick Sharp may not be the offensive answer, but they bring a veteran presence and build on the team’s strengths. And maybe another puck-mover and defensive stalwart will trigger some new offense as well.

One home game for the week – versus Wausau. The road schedule looks intimidating with 6 of the next 8 games on the road, and this week includes road games against 2 elite squads, Brentwood and Corktown. What better way to test the new roster.

Wausau Lumberjacks @ LA Great Danes Back in week 2, Wausau blew the Danes out 4-0, with Frederik Anderson giving up 4 goals on 9 shots in the first period before being pulled. Was it revenge or the new players that gave the Danes the motivation in this one as they rolled to a 6-1 win, scoring on their first 2 shots of the game and building a 4-0 lead before the Lumberjacks were able to put one past Andersen early in the 2nd. Two third period goals by the Danes finished it off.

Lots of stars in this one for LA – the 3 star selections were Jokinen 2G-1A +4, Scheifele 1G-1A +3, and Suter 1G-1A +3. And big games from Jamie Benn with 3 assists and +3, 4th liner Tim Schaller 1G-1A +2 with a SHG, and Brayden Schenn pounding the Lumberjacks all night with 8 hits. A quiet night for newcomers Carlson and Bonino, but they seemed to fit in well and were solid in their debuts.

Weekly Summary: The Danes had not scored more than 4 goals in a game all year until this 6-goal outburst. Nice to have a game like that for a change, but hopefully they don’t forget how to play their defensive game, especially with the tough upcoming road schedule. We will take a .500 record over the next 2 weeks, so a win in their lone home game this week was a boost.

Clearfield Bison Three home games…a divisional matchup, a visit from some old friends, and a heavyweight bout with Brentwood. Can the Bison stay hotter than fire?

(note: as happened last week, I played these Friday but didn’t have time to write up until today)

Thunder Bay Nor’Westers @ Clearfield Bison In a division this tough, there are no ‘gimmes’. Thunder Bay set out to remind Clearfield of their potency early on..carrying play through much of the first, and tallying the first goal with 18 seconds to go in the frame.

Clearfield responded, outshooting the Norwesters 20-8 in the second..but they could not dent Reimer.

Finally in the third,Neal scored early and Old Man Jagr potted one at 12:21 to give the Bison the lead. Thunder Bay made a push, but empty netters by Neal and Hjalmarsson (no idea why he was up ice) gave the Bison a much-closer-than-the-score 4-1 win.

Clearfield put 43 shots on Reimer, while Bobby Lu stopped 29 of 30 for the W.

Stars: #1 Neal 2G #2 Reimer 41 sv, #3 Luongo 29 sv

This was a scrappy game…two elbowing penalties and 5 roughing penalties.

Bathgate Rangers @ Clearfield Bison Just days after the ‘Big Trade’, Subban and Kane both got to visit with their old teammates during warmups. With Bathgate cutting costs and sending their superstars packing..and the big Brentwood game looming…AND Little sitting out…Clearfield was worried about a ‘trap game’; however, this one was never seriously in doubt.

The Bison took the lead 2 minutes in, courtesy of a Justin Williams tip in front. Clearfield dominated most of the first, but Rinne held strong and we went to the break 1-0.

The real turning point came in the second…Tierny scored for the Rangers at 13:32 off a sweet pass from Karlsson, and it looked like we might have a game..but only 14 seconds later, newcomer TJ Brodie scored his first Bison goal to give Clearfield the lead again. That seemed to really deflate Bathgate, as Nealscored 40 seconds later and Old Man Jagr picked up a ‘dirty goal’ at 19:33 to give Clearfield a commanding 4-1 lead entering the third.

Clearfield took the opportunity to rest their stars with the lead, which led to Bathgate owning the period..they outshot Clearfield 17-3…but again, they could not get any momentum. Anderson scored 2 minutes in for Bathgate..but 45 seconds later, they allowed a breakaway goal to Chimera that officially ended the Rangers’ hopes. Bathgate got a ‘garbage-time’ goal with 15 seconds left to set the final at 5-3 Clearfield.

The third period skewed the numbers in favor of Bathgate, as they ended up dominating shots and attempts. Bathgate also did a credible job in the faceoff dot, keeping Clearfield under 55% for one of the few times all year.

3 stars: #1 Williams 1G 1A, #2 Neal 1G 1A, #3 Karlsson 1G 1A

Brentwood Bandits @ Clearfield Bison At last we come to it – the clash of division leaders! Brentwood has some serious firepower, and early on it appeared that the Bison were in awe of it – the Bandits carried the early play and cashed in on a favorable line matchup at 11:23, with a goal by Radulov. Gradually the Bison warmed to the task, and the much-maligned Bison power play finally did something – Drouin and the second unit cashed in the PP marker at 15:55.

We entered the second tied…but Rickard Rakell fixed that on the first shift, converting a Kane saucer pass to give Clearfield a 2-1 lead. The Bison know how to defend, and they kept the Bandits bottled up in their own end for the rest of the period.

The third was a much more even affair…the Bandits testedAnderson often, but it was Clearfield’s Williams who finished the scoring at 9:05. The Bison D shut it down the rest of the way, as Anderson impoved to an insane 12-0 with the 3-1 win.

Clearfield led in most of the stats…shots (37-26), FO (58%), scoring chances (19-11), atack time.

STARS: #1 Drouin (1G), #1 Anderson (25 sv), #3 Rakell (1G)

Weekly Summary: Clearfield stays white-hot with a 3-0 home week, and a road win at Chicago. This has to end soon, but the team is enjoying the ride right now!

Bucks County Racoons The Racs host two teams that are very similar in points with in Alamo and Lakeland.
Alamo Defenders @ Bucks County Racoons The Raccoons score the first four goals of the game to take a comfortable 4-0 lead at 8:35 of the third period, then have to hold on for dear life as the Defenders come storming back, scoring 3 goals in a little over 8 minutes before the Racs ice it with an empty net goal and a 5-3 win. Both teams score on their only PP opportunity of the night, with D. Moore, Jack Johnson and Connor McDavid netting 3 star selections post game.
Lakeland Flying Tigers @ Bucks County Racoons After a scoreless 42 minutes Lakeland scores twice in 4 minute span to take a 2-0 lead. Marcuss Johanson scores on the PP with 29 seconds left in the middle period, but the onslaught never comes as Bucks County only musters 8 shots in the 3rd period and Lakeland skates off with a 2-1 victory. Martin Jones garners 1st start of the game after shopping 29 or 30 shots, while Hartmann and Duschene round out the 3 stars with a goal apiece.
Weekly Summary: A middle of the pack team plays two other middle of the pack teams even, gathering 2 of 4 points. There were multiple fights in both games, which may indicate a sense of frustration seeping in on the Raccoons as the win one, lose one, ot lose one march continues.

Alamo Defenders  Alamo hosts two good teams, which include Long Beach and Corktown
Long Beach Ice Dogs @ Alamo Defenders  Alamo blows a 3-2 lead. With 2:53 left, Long Beach starts a 3 goal run, which includes an empty netter. Lindholm scores the game winning goal.

Long Beach 5 Alamo 3

Corktown Suds @ Alamo Defenders  Alamo starts off well and scores 2 goals in the 1st period. Wheeler scores his 5th and 6th. In the 2nd, Panik scores for Corktown. In the 3rd, Marchand scores his 14th to put Alamo up 3-1. Monahan scores late for Corktown, but Alamo is able to hold the Suds off.

Alamo 3 Corktown 2

 California Regulators
Wausau Lumberjacks @ California Regulators  California takes it 4-1.
Jagr Mullets @ California Regulators  California cuts the Mullets, 4-3.
Weekly Summary:  California attempts to climb out of the hole, takes 2 of 2 home games.

Jagr Mullets Two homes games against New Jersey and Toledo. Half of the Jagr team has been traded away this week, so it was going to be a bittersweet pair of games knowing that some of our franchise anchors would be wearing new jerseys (no pun intended) next week.
New Jersey Grizzlies @ Jagr Mullets With his recent buy-out, these two games are Matt Murray’s last hurrah on Mullet ice.

He did not disappoint in this one, putting together his finest game in a Mullet sweater. He shuts out NJ 4-0. The recently traded Marc-Eduoard Vlasic scores his 3rd goal of the year, while also traded Phil “Hot Dog” Kessel scores his 5th unassisted. Justin Braun (also traded) adds an assist.

Toledo Walleye @ Jagr Mullets The lamp was lit many times in this one — but Matt Murray is just good enough to pull off the 5-4 victory in his swan song.

Toledo scores twice in the first to take a 2-0 lead, but Jagr pours in 5 unaswered goals to stun the Walleyes. Toledo scores two in the 3rd to make it interesting, but Murray denies them the tie-breaker.

As far as friends soon departed, Phil Kessel scores not one but two goals in the 2nd (and adds an assist in the 3rd)… Keith Yandle adds two assists.

Patrik Laine has a huge game, scoring his 9th and 10th. Nazem Kadri puts his 17th goal of the season in and adds a helper. Justin Schultz and Taylor Hall both provide two assists.

Weekly Summary: Jagr made some aggressive moves this week, freeing up a ton of cap space by trading Phil Kessel, Marc-Eduoard Vlasic, Justin Braun, Keith Yandle, Boone Jenner, and others — then bought out expected franchise goalie Matt Murray.

Even with the moves, Jagr’s roster appears strong enough to hang around the periphery of the playoff hunt this year. But the moves clearly were a sign that Jagr is serious about loading up for next year and avoiding a similar horrendous start to next seaosn.
