Scottsdale X-Men
Weekly Preview:
Scottsdale has 2 home games this week against Columbus and Lakeland with a goal for the remainder of the season simply to remain competitive.
Game #1:
Two of the leagues struggling teams Columbus and Scottsdale meet up at the Xavier Center. A phrase I thought I would never utter, “Jacob Markstrom registers a shutout for the X-Men”. No, that’s not a misprint. Jacob Markstrom turned away 29 Brew Jacket shots to complete the shut out for Scottsdale. Nordstrom, Stepan, and Dubinsky provided the scoring punch for the X-Men in their 3-0 triumph.
Game #2:
Now this is the Jacob Markstrom we’ve all know to come and l…well we’ve all come to know. The Lakeland Flying Tigers came into Scottsdale looking for blood and got it in the form of a 5-4 victory over the X-Men. Spezza, Parise, and Domi each provided a goal and a total of 8 points between them for Lakeland. Milan Lucic provided a goal and 2 assists, and Derek Stepan came up with a goal and an assist for Scottsdale, but it was not enough. Jacob Markstrom returned to his dismal self allowing 5 goals on 27 shots.
Weekly Summary:
The X-Men remained competitive, but that means going .500 at home with 2 standings points over 2 home games. Nothing to write home about.

Jagr Mullets
Weekly Preview:
Home games against first place California and last place Alamo.
Game #1: What happens when two of the best goalies in the league (Holtby and Bishop) square off? A bloodbath, of course!Jagr scores 3 unaswered goals to go up 3-1 after 1, but then California puts up 3 unanswered in the 2nd to take a 4-3 lead. Jagr makes it interesting by pulling the goalie and scoring late, but ultimately falls 6-5.

Ovechkin and Hagelin both pot two.

Hampton Blizzard
Weekly Preview:
Hampton plays host to two Central Division teams this week – leading Minneapolis and 3rd place Lansing.
Game #1: Game 1 was a game in which sneaky Minneapolis lulled the Blizzard to sleep and came back from a 2-0 deficit to tie it and send it into a fruitless overtime and an even more fruitless (for Hampton) shootout with the Deep Freeze scoring at will and the home team … Not. Minneapolis sends Hampton to its 7th overtime shootout loss 3-2.
It was a very sleepy game from the get-go with both teams managing a total of 12 shots in the scoreless and penalty-less 1st period. The teams showed a bit of life in the 2nd period when Patric Hornqvist beat the snot out of senior citizen Shane Doan and promptly was given the game misconduct for abuse of the elderly.
Hampton responded by picking up the offensive pace and shelled Minnespolis keeper Henrik Lundqvist with 18 shots but managed to find the back of the net just once on a bullet from the blueline by Tyler Myers who was assisted by Andrew Shaw and Mikael Backlund. Hampton added another goal just 15 seconds into the 3rd on a power play
when Jamie McGinn tipped Mattias Ekholm’s drive from the point past Lundqvist. It was the 23rd of the year for the overachieving Coyote forward.
Minnie drew within one goal five minutes into the period on a rebound off Pavel Datsyuk’s wrist shot that went straight to Mr. Boyle for the easy goal against helpless Antii Raanta. It was Boyle’s 8th of the year. At 13:33 a backbreaking breakway by Hoffman brought the two teams even 2-2. For Hoffman, it was #15 on the year.
The shootout featured some nice sniping by Patrick Sharp and Datsyuk to beat Raanta while Backlund and Andre Burakovsky continued the shootout impotence for Hampton getting blanked and giving Hampton just a single point on the day.
F-ing shootouts.
Game #2: A seesaw battle with streaky offense and defensive lapses on both sides that ended with Aaron Ekblad scoring the game-winning goal at 13 minutes of the 3rd period as Hampton took it 5-4 over Lansing.
The Hampton coaching staff could only assume that Hampton’s defencemen were so preoccupied with trying to score – they accounted for 4 of the 5 Blizzard goals – that they couldn’t do crap to stop the Capitals from peppering Antii Raanta with 36 shots in the game.
Simeon Varlamov was equally busy facing 41 shots, but finished on the losing end thanks to what appeared to be contagious crappy defence.
Scoring for Lansing were Little with two (#9 and #10), Backstrom (17), and Steen (7).
Hampton got its goals from Nielsen (11), Ekholm (10), Demers (7) and two by Ekblad (16).
Weekly Summary:
Hampton continues to have a tough time when anyone other than Brian Elliott is net and with him resting manages to get a split and continues with its run of accursed shootout failures against two tough teams.

Alamo Defenders
Weekly Preview:
Lakeland comes to Alamo for one, then Alamo ventures out for 3 on the road.

It’s his 5th goal of the season.Alamo gets aggressive in the 3rd period, and finally score with 3:55 to go and ties the game. But, Lakeland responds quickly with an Oshie goal with 3:22 to go. Alamo pulls Greiss, but can’t score.Lakeland 2 Alamo 1

2. Boedker 2 G (SXM)

But Lakeland closes the gap in the last minute and a half on a Seabrook shorthanded goal.Kane gets his 2nd goal of the game (PP) early in the 2nd and the Rangers pull ahead 4-2, but another Lakeland goal, Spezza (PP) cuts it to 4-3.

With Lakeland down by one they pull Jones but the strategy backfires when Kane intercepts the puck and flicks it down ice into the empty net for the hat trick and a 5-3 Ranger win.

Stars (all Rangers)
1. Kane – 3 goals
2. Klingberg 1 goal, 2 Points
3. Benn 3 assists

Game #3: Ripon from the Pacific division comes to Madison Round Garden their late game heroics pull out a close one as the Rangers again fail to hold a lead – big lead.Kane (PP) and Benn score 1st period goals. Then just over a minute into the 2nd, Donskoi tallies to make it 3-0 on the Rangers 2nd PP goal of the game.BUT remember, Bathgate has porous defense – so the Rockets weren’t worried, yet anyway. So what happens? Good night NURSE – Nurse gets his 1st goal of the season (PP) early in the 2nd. Duchense scores near the mid point of the period.

Down 3-2 entering the 3rd, the Rockets tie on Versteeg’s goal at the halfway point and then Hall redirects one past Rinne with a 1:11 left to got to get the go ahead goal, the game winner and complete the comeback in the 4-3 Rockets win.

Minneapolis Deep Freeze
Weekly Preview:
After making some trades and strategic adjustments, Minneapolis has moved up to the top of the Central division. They’ll look to stay there with a divisional matchup on the road in Chicago and an inter-conference matchup at home against the Indiana Sycamores.
Game #1: Minneapolis Deep Freeze (3) @ Chicago Cosa Nostra (4)

Minneapolis arrives in Chicago and much to their surprise the local mafia has kidnapped the Cosa Nostra coaching staff.

Chicago gets off to a good start playing for their missing coaches. Barely 1 minute into the game, Krug set up Copp (9) in front of the net and Chicago was off to an early 1-0 lead. Minneapolis eventually remembered how to get the puck out of their own end, and managed to tie it up with 12:40 left in the first when Datsyuk fed Eriksson (25) for a
hard slap shot from the point that beat Condon on the glove side. The first period would end with the score still tied at 1 and 57 seconds remaining on a powerplay for Chicago.

Minneapolis killed off the rest of that powerplay and then another after Hoffman took 2 minutes for roughing, but Chicago would still strike next. Richards was bumped off the puck while carrying it out of the Deep Freeze zone, creating a 2-1 coming back at Lundqvist. Knonwall got the puck over to Baertschi (8) who put it on the top shelf where mom hides the cookies. Two minutes later with Boyle in the box for holding, Chicago would make it 3-1 with a powerplay goal from Duclair (16). With under 1 minute left in the second period and Minneapolis just wanting to get into the locker room to regroup, Pastrnak (3) got around Bartkowski and extended the Cosa Nostra lead to 4-1.

Minneapolis coach Larry Murphy rips into his team during the intermission for their sloppy defensive play. Four minutes into the third period, the Deep Freeze cut the lead to 2 when Boyle carried the puck all the way up the ice and gave it to Pesce (3) who beat Condon to get Lundqvist the rare goaltender assist. Minneapolis would strike again on their next shot only 52 seconds later when Hoffman (15) got loose in front and beat Condon high on the glove side with 15:07 remaining. Through 15 minutes, a powerplay, and some 4-on-4 time, Minneapolis has mounted 19 shots in the 3rd period but still trails by one. They will get 1 final chance to even the score as Gudas takes a penalty for
cross-checking to put Chicago down a man with 1:54 left to play. Minneapolis pulls Lundqvist with about 1 minute left but just can’t get the goal that they needed and Chicago holds on to with 4-3 in a Central division upset. Condon earns a much deserved 1st star with his 45 saves to steal the win.

Game #2: Indiana Sycamores (4) @ Minneapolis Deep Freeze (7)

Minneapolis thought they caught a break early in this one when Indiana’s Weber took a 5 minute major for elbowing, but it was Indiana who would get a shorthanded goal from Bergeron (13). Despite 9 shots on the powerplay, Minneapolis gets nothing to show for it and Indiana strikes again. Read (1) gets his first goal of the year and Indiana leads 2-0 with 12:38 left in the opening period. Indiana would hold onto their lead and go into the first intermission leading 2-0.

The second period gets off to an exciting start as McQuaid and Markov each take 2 minutes for roughing each other up. Minneapolis dominates the play during the 4-on-4 but still comes up with nothing. Pominville (2) would finally get Minneapolis on the board 4 minutes into the period with a one-timer from the slot set up by Huberdeau. One minute later, the Deep Freeze tie the game when Luongo gives up a juicy rebound and Schenn (11) bangs it home. The tie would not last long though, as Jagr (18) gets a rebound of his own and beats Lundqvist to make it 3-2 with  11:42 left in the second. With 2 minutes to go in the period Luongo makes a big save on a shot from Schenn, but gives up another rebound and Sharp (12) made him pay for it again to tie the game at 3. Once again Indiana answered quickly, with Jagr (19) getting his second of the game
with 42 seconds left in the period. Coach Larry Murphy is upset with Lundqvist’s performance in the past 2 games (4 goals on 31 shots against Chicago and 4 goals on 23 shots so far tonight) and decides to make a change, bringing in Michal Neuvirth to finish the game.

Minneapolis continues to keep the game interesting, as Datsyuk (8) ties it at 4 just over a minute into the third period. About 5 minutes into the period, Boyle (8) blasts a shot from the point that beats Luongo to give Minneapolis their first lead of the game. Minneapolis catches a lucky break and is able to extend the lead to 2 when Sharp knocked
Bergeron off the puck and Schmidt (4) carried it in alone from the red line and beat Luongo on the rare breakaway for the defenseman. Minneapolis leads 6-4 with 6:50 remaining. Three minutes later, the Deep Freeze would strike again as Datsyuk (9) beautifully redirected Boyle’s shot for his 2nd of the game to make it 7-4. Seidenberg would take a late penalty for Minneapolis but Indiana was unable to capitalize and Minneapolis holds on to win 7-4 courtesy of 4 goals in the third period.

It seems visiting teams are being sent the the penalty box almost twice as often as the home team.Minny’s Brassard score the 1st goal of the game his 17th and them the penalty parade starts and the Nor’Westers score 5 in a row Tatar (17th), Eakin (6th), Helm (4th), Saad (17th) and Smith (6) for an easy home victory.
Game #3:

Indiana Sycamores
Weekly Preview:
Two huuuge home games against division rivals – and a roadie against Chicago (Stray couldn’t play it, and asked me to do the honors)
Game #1: Thunder Bay (3) @ Indiana (5)

The hockey gods must have been displeased with Thunder Bay – the Nor’Westers dominated the opening period, outshooting Indiana 8-4 and out-chancing them 4-1..but thanks to two deflections and one leaky goal, three of the Sycamores’ first 4 shots slammed home. An early second-period goal by Toews appeared to put the rout on – but TB stormed back with 2 in the period to make it 4-3 after two.

Thunder Bay pressured, but backup Reto Berra stood tall, and finally Willie Mitchell, of all people (I told you the hockey gods were in a mood) sealed the deal for the Sycamores.

#1 star: Toews, 2G
#2 Barkov 1+2 each for TB

#3: Eberle 1+2 each for TB

Mason was shaky for the Nor’Westerners, with only 15 saves on 20 shots.

Really, TB outplayed Indiana and new bench boss ‘Badger Bob’ Johnson was relieved to get out of there with 2 points.

Game #2: IND(2) @ CHI(1)

Seeking to keep Bobby Lu and Berra eligible down the stretch, the Sycamores turned to 3rd-stringer Eddie Lack on the road against the struggling Casa Nostra. In the end, he was brilliant, stopping 25 of 26 shots for Indiana.

CHI took the lead late in the second, but Indy’s Raffl quickly tied it in the 3rd. It looked like we were headed to OT – where the Sycamores go to doe (league leading 9 extra-time losses) – when Bergeron saves the day! His goal at 17:06 is the difference as the Sycamores hang on for a much-needed 2-1 win.

#1 star: Raffl
#2 star: Bergeron
#3 Lack (25 sv)

Honestly, a pretty boring game but we’ll take the W!

Game #3: NJ(4) @ IND(2)

Remember what I said earlier about the hockey gods? Well, I think they had seen enough of Indy getting the bounces…

Indy outshot the Grizzlies 27-12 through 2 periods, out chanced them 13-6, won 60% of the faceoffs, had their top goalie in net..and found themselves down 4-0 after two. The worst was at the end of the 2nd, when the Sycamores took three consecutive penalties – which, inevitably, led to a 5-on-3 goal that put it away for NJ.

Indy tacked on a couple of meaningless goals late, but this game was over in the second.

Kinkaid was spectacular in net for NJ, with 38 saves on 40 shots.

#1 star: Ryan (2G)
#2: Weber (1+2)
#3: Kinkaid

Weekly Summary:
Two outta three aint bad…but in the toughest division in the MWHL, those 4-pointers vs. division rivals loom large. Overall, though, I’d have to say the Sycamores deserved 4 points and that’s what they got.

Brentwood Bandits
Weekly Preview:
Brentwood continues to be a fringe playoff team, despite having two of the best players in the game with Crosby and Malkin. The trades they made to try to shore up the other lines scoring and defense have not seemed to bring the wanted results. They are giving it more time to see how it goes before looking to make more deals to either
get better, or build for the future.
Game #1: Battle of the Brothers part (? – don’t remember) as Jagr comes into Brentwood as the division leader and one of the best defensive teams in the league.Period 12:26 in Frank Vatrano continues to show that maybe he’ll be a force for this team in the future (time will tell) as he scores his 4th of the season assisted by Phaneuf (21) and Hemsky (6)Jagr scores twice to close out the first period as Pavelski, the Bandit killer, nets his 26th of the season assisted by Martinez (12) and then just over 3 minutes later Kadri score his 8th of the campaign assisted by Smith (8) and Pavelski (27)

Period 2
Malkin ties the game at 2 with his 21st of the season assisted by his linemates Parenteau (28) and Crosby (32).

On the power play Ekman-Larsson blasts his 19th passed Bishop assisted by Crosby (33) and Phaneuf (22) to give the Bandits a 3-2 lead.

Period 3
Kevin (Home Alone) Bieksa scores #4 on the PP assisted by Liles (17) and Niederreiter (13) for a 4-2 Bandit lead.

The Mullets won’t go quietly into this good night…

Abdelkader scores #17 on the PP assisted by Schultz (3) and Staal (14) to make cut the lead to one as the Bandits lead 4-3

Jagr pulls Bishop but they can’t get one past Fleury in the waning seconds as Brentwood pushes the brotherly bond aside to take one from the Division leaders Jagr Mullets by a final score of 4-3

Star 1 Pavelski 1G, 1A
Star 2 Malkin 1G
Star 3 Vatrano 1G

Notables
JAG – Bishop 30 saves
BWB – Fleury 30 saves

Game #2: Brentwood tries to get a winning streak going as Scottsdale comes to town.

Period 1- Scottsdale out-shoots Brentwood 12-9 but the period ends in a 0-0 tie.

Period 2 – Neiderreiter opens things up on the PP with #11 on the season assisted by Crosby (34) and Malkin (35). 1-0 Brentwood

Marleau makes it 2-0 with his 15th of the campaign assisted by Hainsey (12) and Vatrano (3)

Malkin gives the Bandits a 3 goal lead with his 22nd of the season assisted by Coburn (5) and Crosby (35). 3-0 Bandits.

Johansson gets the first goal for Scottsdale on the evening with his 4th assisted by Greene (6) and Cogliano (9)

Marleau nets #16 on the PP assisted by Liles (18) and Bieksa (12) to give Brentwood a solid 4-1 lead

Period 3
Fleischmann scores his 5th on the season unassisted by snagging a cross ice pass and barreling down on Markstrom and roofing the puck on a breakaway. 5-2 Brentwood leads.

Colborne keeps it close by getting his 15th of the season assisted by Stepan (22) and Josi (24). 5-3 Brentwood

That score would hold up and Brentwood wins it’s second game in a row in impressive fashion because they were out-shot 34-23 by Scottsdale, but they had Markstrom’s number and Montoya made the saves he had to make (31 of them) to give Brentwood the victory.

Star 1 – Marleau 2G
Star 2 – Malkin 1G, 1A
Star 3 – Greene 1G, 1A

Notables
SXM – None
BWB – Montoya 31 saves

Weekly Summary:
Brentwood responded to a closed door meeting from coach Tom Atkins to pull into second place in the Metro division. 8 points behind Jagr as of the writing of this article, but it’s sure to change and although it sounds like a tough road to take them over… stranger things have happened.Beat ’em Bandits!
