2019 PROPOSALS

Proposal #1: Bonus Baby
Proposal Reason: During the Draft (Starting in 2021) MWBL Franchise Owners will have the right to designate one (1) minor league Un-Carded Player as their “Bonus Baby”.

  • Bonus Babies will be given a 4 Year Minor League contract.
  • Bonus Babies may not be traded as a Minor League / Un-Carded Player.
  • Franchises may only have one (1) Bonus Baby on their roster at any time.

This spot is occupied for four (4) years, or until they become a Carded player.

Once again the Bonus Baby label must be given to the player as he is drafted as an Un-Carded Player.

Any Franchise that leaves the league the new owner has the option to keep the “Bonus Baby” contract, revert to a three (3) year Un-Carded Minor League Prospect or cut the Bonus Baby player altogether.

Proposal #2: Lottery Pick Repeat Rule
Proposal Reason: No team winning a lottery pick (i.e. first 3 picks in first round) may participate in the lottery draft the following year. If a team is ineligible due to this rule, all teams in the ineligible team’s league will move up one position in assigning the lottery balls. A franchise that has changed ownership is exempted from this rule.

Reason: There are few reasons to avoid tanking in the MWBL, as it is the quickest way to a rebuild and there is no need to put butts in the seats. This rule will give slightly less reward for a determined tanking project, which may give the team less incentive to lose in Year 2 and help the competitive balance. Additionally, it will allow more teams into the lottery process that might otherwise not be involved, creating more excitement around the lottery. For a team truly in a long-term rebuild, they will be again eligible for the lottery in Year 3.

Proposal #3: Expand Trading back to August 31st in League Manager
Proposal Reason: While MLB moved their trade deadline back to July 31st and we split the difference with August 15th, players are being waived outright in MLB now and we can’t respond accordingly. We play 1 month ahead of MLB’s real schedule so we should have the opportunity to make decisions based on those waives as far forward as we can. 2 weeks can make a big difference.
