Chicago
@ Bethesda
-
The Mobsters visited the Bandicoots online using Joinme and it was
expected that there would be no shortage of road kill as Bethesda
was definitely outgunned and outclassed in the series. Every once in a while though no matter how careful you are someone gets hit by lightning. In this case, it was the Mobsters wearing the stainless steel underwear as much as random chance could ever account for anyway cuz skill had nothing to do with this. Game One - The teams swapped a pair of runs in the 4th, but it was Luke Hochevar outdueling Josh Beckett as Bethesda squeaked past Chicago 3-2. BJ Upton did the damage for Chicago, smacking his 19th homer of the year. Hochevar (6-19) pitched 7 strong innings and allowed six hits with no walks and five strikeouts as he desperately tried to avoid dropping his 20th game of the season. Beckett gave up all the runs for his team - one unearned resulting from a Derek Jeter error - and was just OK as he dropped to 15-9 on the year. Drew Storen struck out four and walked one in two innings of bacon-saving baseball to earn his 15th save of the year. Game Two - Chicago came out pissed and laid a butt-kicking to the Banidcoots, hitting three triples in the process - two by Jerk Deter ... I mean Derek Jeter as they pummelled Bethesda 10-3. Jeter was 3/5 with 3 RBIs and Denard Span was 3/5 with a double, a triple and 5 RBIs ... I'm guessing one of his better nights of production this season. CC Sabathia (16-7) got the win with six pretty nice innings of 4-hit ball. He gave up one run while walking one and fanning six as Chicago showed off that they actually had a bullpen. Jordan Pacheco and Travis Snider each homered for the first time this season for Bethesda. Brandon Morrow lasted just 3.2 innings allowing five runs of seven hits and two walks. He struck out four. Aaron Laffey got a little excited on the mound for Bethesda after allowing four runs to score. Laffey tossed a wild pitch and clonked Gaby Sanchez and Sean (Human Target) Rodriguez before mercifully being tossed from the game. Game Three - Bethesda beat up Francisco Liriano and Matt Thornton just enough in the first three innings to give them the cushion needed to carry the game to victory as they hung on to win 8-6. Expecting a homer on almost every pitch with Brian Matusz on the mound, the Oriole sometimes major leaguer and now reclamation project gave up five runs in six innings on three homers, of course - Andrew McCutchen (19), Vernon Wells (25), Hector Sanchez (1) - and earned his first win of the season to bring him to 1-9. Liriano couldn't make it out of the 2nd inning. He gave up six runs on eight hits including a 3-run homer to Casper Wells (7). His replacement, Thornton, fared little better giving up a couple of runs on four hits before going down to a 4-day injury. Drew Storen got his 16th save of the season in this one. Game Four - The Mobsters get pissed off yet again at losing and bludgeon Brett Myers and the 'coots as the series evened up with an 8-5 Chicagoan victory. Andrew McCutchen (20) homered for the second straight game and Fausto Carmona was left in for the duration despite allowing five runs on 11 hits 9 - walking none and striking out 11!!!! - to improve to 7-6. Myers (10-16) took one for the team as he went the distance and gave up 12 hits, three walks and four strikeouts. Josh Thole (4) and Mark Teahen (4) each homered pretty harmlessly for Bethesda. Game Five - Another squeaker and another game where Luke Hochevar refused to be dragged kicking and screaming to his 20th victory as he pitched a completed game and hung on for 5-4 come-from-behind Bethesda win. It started out looking like it was going to be a long night as Hoch (7-19) gave up four runs to Chicago in the first inning, but he settled down quite nicely allowing only six hits in total with three walks and two strikeouts. Derrek Lee did the damage for Chicago with a double and two RBIs. Mark Teahen (5) blasted his second homer of the season (a three-run shot off Brad Lincoln in the 4th) and Jon Jay hit his 11th for Bethesda. Jordan Pacheco was 3/4 with an RBI for Bethesda. Lincoln (3-2) went five, giving up all of the runs on 10 hits and no walks. He K-ed six. Game Six - Another Bethesda win - another pissed off Chicago squad. Bethesda got to Chicago starter Felix Hernandez as well as they could but couldn't string any of their 10 hits together which made it kind of unfortunate given that on the other side of the field, the Mobsters were busy bashing around Marco Estrada (4-3) and Aaron Laffey. Chicago scored three unearned runs on a trio of errors by Bethesda's Josh Thole, Diory Hernandez and Jon Jay. The Mobsters had 15 hits in the contest with only Jim Thome's double going for extra bases. Chipper Jones had three hits and drove in two for Chicago and Sean Rodriguez had three hits and two runs scored. Bethesda scored its lone run on John Mayberry's double play ball in the 1st inning. King Felix edged closer to another 20-win season with the seven inning performance and is now 19-7. |

Hollywood
@
Coconut Creek
-
Four 1-run games finished at 2 wins apiece. Hollywood wins a game 5-0. Coconut Creek wins a game 5-2. Series ends up in a 3-3 split. The Crushers manage to beat Kershaw despite having only 4 hits after 8 innings. Of course, all 4 hits were solo homers. Gotta uphold the Crusher name! Jered Weaver is the dominant Hollywood player. He hurled a complete game 1-hit shutout. Alex Gonzalez is the dominant Crusher player. He hits 4 homers and has 7 RBI in the series. |
| Severn @ Pittsburgh - No News out of Pittsburgh. |
|
Southbend @
Detroit
- Southbend goes into Detroit and sweeps the series. Detroit just
couldn't get any offense going as they only scored 4 runs in the series.
Niese has a big series winning 2 games, giving up only 1 run in his 1st start and tossing a shutout in his second start. Morse, Wigginton, and Joyce are hitting stars for Southbend. |

Tijuana @
Virginia
- The news of Vlad Guerrero's trade did not set well with the
other Virginia players. Vlad was "Mr. Slugger." He was the face of
Virginia. He was the man Commissioner Stray Corrado coveted but
could never acquire. And now he is gone. As some would say, he has
gone to the dark side. With tears in his eyes, Vlad hugged his
longtime coach, and friend, Slug Morgan. They shook hands, nodded
and Vlad turned and walked out of the clubhouse for the last time.
Met by press and asked how he felt, Vlad slowly shook his lowered
head and muttered, "I will always be a Slugger. My heart will remain
in Virginia" Club officials have verified that Guerrero has
requested that should he ever be considered for the Hall of Fame, he
wants to go in as a Virginia Slugger where he played for 16 years.
As for the series...without Vlad the Sluggers beat-up on the Bottle Rockets...go figure. Gm.1 VIR 6-1 J.Danks tossed a 4-hitter over 8.2 and Stanton, Santana, and LaPorta provided the runs. Gm.2 VIR 7-1 T.Cahill scatters 8 hits over 8.1 Santana and Loney combine for 7 hits and 4 RBI. Gm.3 VIR 4-3 Z.Greinke stymies VIR bats but S.Romo,in relief, gives up walk-off RBI single to M.Bourn. Gm.4 VIR 4-2 J.de la Rosa wins his first start getting help from J.Loney's 2 hits and 2 RBI. Gm.5 TIJ 4-1 OK,...back to reality. C.Beltran and B.Butler go deep for all the runs Ogando needs. Romo doesn't blow this one. Gm.6 TIJ 7-2 T.Lilly holds VIR to 5 hits. M.Young goes 3-4 with 2 RBI. Must admit it was really strange playing without Guerrero in at least one of the games. |
| Yonge Street @ Dallas - The Stalkers score 11 runs in the first and second games before Dallas wins 3 of the last 4 to split the series. James Shields throws a 1 hit complete game shutout in the fith game striking out 10. |
| Elyria @ Fremont - Fremont wins its first series since early April, taking down Elyria 4 games to 2. |
|
West Coast @
Manhattan
- Manhattan only wins 2 out of 6 from the Swing. Swing 6-1 Swing 6-4 Swing 5-0 Swing 5-2 Manhattan 15-0 Manhattan 6-0 |
| Long Beach @ Camarillo - Long Beach rallied from behind on the final game to avoid being swept. Camarillo takes the series 5 to 1. |
| Motor City @ Jersey - Jersey takes the series 5-1. |
| Clovis @ Iron City - Three extra inning games, two blown saves by Iron City closer Francisco Cordero make the Yinzer faithful nervous, but they manage to win 4 of 6 from Clovis. That should, if the math is correct, give Owensboro a three-game lead heading into a big series between the two NL East rivals next week. |
| Valdosta @ Sacramento - Sacramento bats come out of their Tempe-induced slump against Valdosta, consistently scoring between 6 and 9 runs in each game, sufficient enough to take the series 6 games to none. With Camarillo on a roll, Sacramento needed the wins, but it didn't come without a cost--Pujols, Youkillis, Molina, and Giambi are all injured into next series. |
| Tempe @ Roseville - Jeff and I had a good time playing online this morning and I highly recommend it if you can spare two hours. The home run leaders for each team went deep a couple times. Beltre is now up to 42 and Carlos Lee now has 26. Potenital hall of famer and recent acquisition Vladamir Guerrero made his impact going 3 for 7 as a pinch hitter. Tempe ended up winning 5 of 6 in the series, but it was a lot tighter than the standings show |

Owensboro @ Bay State
- Owensboro visited Baystate and had a party. Baystate is just
focused on making it through the year while Owensboro is in the
thick of the race. Owensboro does need to Get Dunn and Olivo more
atbats or they will be lost. Baystate is happy to report no player
or pitcher will have less than 50% of his real life use. Game 1) Chen improves to 9-10 as Hairston and Olivo add 3 hits each in a 6-3 Owensboro win. Game 2) Wang for Baystate outpitched Hamels, but sadly the Minuteman closer Bass gave up 2 in the 9th to lose the game as Napoli got a huge double. Owensboro 3 Baystate 2 Game 3) Collemeter went down for 2 weeks but Mota and Ayala did great and got big homers from Hairston and Jones. Owensboro 7 Baystate 1 Game 4) Vazquez nearly no hit Baystate allowing only 2 hits in the end. Dunn hit the big 3 run homer! Owensboro 6 Baystate 0 Game 5) Baystate nearly no hit again as Wells pitched a 1 hitter (Shoppach homer) in 7 innings. He got 2 Soriano homers, a Berkman homer... Owensboro 7 Baystate 2 Game 6) Chen evens his record at 10-10 with a complete game 5 hitter. Berkman hit two homers for the boro but interestingly Guyer hit 2 homers for Baystate. Owensboro 8 Baystate 2 Wow ugly series for Baystate. The one chance to win ended in a blown save by Bass. The good news for Owensboro is that with this 6 game sweep they are making a strong playoff run. Management in an effort to forget the nightmare series announced that, Labbats is providing free beer on the flight to Tempe and will expect every player to get stinking drunk.Any player who does not blow a blood alcohol level above 0.12 will not be allowed on the team bus to the hotel in Tempe and will have to walk to the hotel, sober enough to remember the six game sweep at home. |
