- Severn visits Virginia Gm.1 SEV - 4-2 W-Hoffman (1-0) L-Nelson (0-1) Pettitte opens for the Sluggers against the Express's Zambrano. Both pitch well and leave tied at 2 all. Pat Burrell's 2-run single in the 11th is the game winner. Gm.2 SEV - 7-3 W-Webb (1-0) L-McClung (0-1) Severn pounds out 12 hits. Hall goes deep in a 2-4, 2 RBI performance and A-Rod does the same. Vlady is 2-4 with his 2nd homer in 2 games for the Sluggers. Gm.3 VIR - 8-5 W-Garcia (1-0) L-Olsen (0-1) Virginia puts up a 6 spot in the 3rd and goes on to win their first game of the year. Markakis goes yard for the Sluggers in his first plate appearnace of the year. Gm.4 SEV - 12 - 9 W-Hoffman (2-0) L-Yates (0-1) Severn explodes!! 23 hits in 10 innings. A 3-run 10th for the Express is the difference. A-Rod 4-6; Miggy Cabrera 4-5, 3 RBI, HR; Morneau 5-6, 2 RBI. Sluggers keep it close with only 10 hits. Thome and Cameron leave the yard. Gm.5 SEV - 12 - 10 W-Cormier (1-0) L-Marcum (0-1) Another high scoring game. Severn goes up 7-1 with a 5-run 3rd, 4 of those on a Grand Salami by Bill Hall...but VIR comes right back with 7 in the 3rd to take an 8-7 lead. But the Express just can't be stopped. They seal it with a 3 run 6th highlighted by Morneau's blast into the cheap seats. Once again Cabrera and Morneau do it for the Express as they combine to post 5-9, 5 runs, 5 RBI stats as each homered. Four Sluggers cleared the fence including Vlady with his 3rd of the year. It's going to be a long year for the Sluggers. With no pitching to speak of they will have to rely on offense to win games. |

Ann Arbor
- Midland at Ann Arbor Game 1 Ann Arbor wins 3-1 In retrospect, it was almost predictable. Not for any logical reasons, mind you, but based on a variety of factors completely independent of talent, who was pitching, or projected records you just had to figure that the unlikely would prevail over the raw numbers, or the probabilities if you will. Such was the case in Ann Arbor as the Bluebirds played their inaugural MWBL game before what can only be described as a frenzied and wildly optimistic sellout crowd that filled the cozy confines of Wrigley to the brim. Jason Marquis took the mound for the Bluebirds and promptly got into trouble by giving up a pair of basehits but it was Mitch Maier firing a rope to Rob Mackowiak at third base that cut down the streaking Brian Roberts as he tried to take the extra base. Marquis wiggled out of that first inning untouched, gave up an RBI triple to Murton in the second, and was lights out from that point on as he fired a nifty 5 hit complete game fanning 6 and walking 1. The Bluebird offense, not projected to score many runs this year, got a big boost from Eric Munson as he dialed long distance in the second inning to put the Bluebirds up 2-1. In the bottom of the 8th, Jose Reyes took D. Reyes downtown for a solo shot giving Ann Arbor all the insurance they would need as the Bluebirds put the Mudhens down 1-2-3 in the 9th making a winner of Jason Marquis and laying claim to first place in the N.L. East, albeit for only a single day. In a season that promises more growing pains than wins, Ann Arbor celebrates their opening day triumph in style, yet knowing the high point of 2007 is likely right now. | Garden City @ Tempe - Josh Johnson threw a no hitter in the last game and prevented the sweep and Pedro from getting his 200th win. It was a weird no hitter. He walked 4 batters in the 1st inn and was loosing until the 4th. The game was tied 1-1 until the 7th. Johnson finished with 7 walks and only 6 SO. Manny was the offensive MVP of the series batting .500 and slugging .833. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Toad Hollow & Los Angeles - The Riots bats broke out with thunder during their opening series of the 2007 season against Toad Hollow. Despite suffering a couple key injuries, the Riots went 5-0 for the series and batted .318, hit 14 home runs and scored 52 runs - with a team ERA of 2.80. In all, the Riots' series MVP was Scott Rolen, who batted .350, hit 3 home runs, and had 12 RBI in the 5-game set. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
