1973 WORLD SERIES WRITE UPS
Hollywood welcomes the Old Mill Legends and Legends they are. For Hollywood to
upset the favorite Legends, they must get on the board early and score often.
After most the year with Bill North 1st in the lineup, they are changing their
strategy and hope to put the pressure on with power hitting Boog Powell leading
off..
GAME 1: Jim Palmer v. Bill Singer.
1st Inning:
Top: With 1-out, Amos Otis sneaks a single through on the right side. Singer
puts the pressure on himself when he walks the next batter, Darrell Evens. He
then settles in to get McCovey on a popup and Grubb on strikes.
Bottom: The lineup change works in Hollywood's favor as their leadoff hitter,
Boog Powell walks. With the infield back, Bill North lays down a sacrifice bunt.
But Palmer gets out of it with a strikeout of Johnson and a popup by Torre.
2nd Inning:
Top: Don Money singles to lead off the inning and moves to 2nd on a Sanguillen
groundout. However, Roberts and Palmer are caught looking to end the inning.
Bottom: 1-2-3
3rd Inning:
Top: Evans triples with 2-outs, but McCovey strands him.
Bottom: Russell walks to lead off, but Singer cant get the bunt down to move him
over. However, he does move to 2nd on a FC, but is stranded by North.
4th Inning:
Top: Sanguillen doubles with 2-outs. Roberts is intentionally walked for Palmer,
who strikes out to end the inning
Bottom: 1-2-3
5th Inning:
Top: Singer's first 1-2-3 inning
Bottom: Garry Maddox reaches on a Don Money error to lead off the inning.
However that s erased when Sanguillen throws him out trying to steal! Of course,
Johnny Bench then doubles which has Hollywood management kicking themselves!
Bench's double is the first Hollywood hit of the game. Palmer gets Russell and
Singer easily to end the threat.
6th Inning:
Top: With 1-out, Grubb singles to right. However, Singer gets 2 fly balls from
Money and Sanguillen to end the inning.
Bottom: Boog Powell singles to lead off the inning. Again, Palmer gets out of
the inning with any surprises.
7th Inning:
Top: 1-2-3
Bottom: 1-2-3
8th Inning:
Top: With 1-out, Darrell Evans delivers the blow that could most likely be the
game. He drills a solo shot to straight away center to give Old Mill a 1-0 lead.
Then McCovey follows with his own to right-center for a 2-0 lead. Hrabrosky
comes in and gives up a single, but gets out of the inning
Bottom: 1-2-3
9th Inning:
Top: Roberts singles with 1-out, but is stranded.
Bottom: Never say die Hollywood gets a single from Bill North to lead off the
9th. This time he steals 2nd successfully on the broken hit-and-run play with
Davey Johnson. Johnson then bounces to 2nd which moves North to 3rd. Torre then
flies out to right field. Palmer then gets Pete Rose to line to center field to
end the game as he pitches a complete game 3-hit shutout to put Old Mill up 1-0
Old Mill up 1 game to 0
GAME 2: Steve Rogers v. Andy Messersmith.
With the makeshift lineup not helping in game 1, Hollywood goes back to a more
traditional lineup for game 2.
1st Inning:
Top: With 1-out, Otis and Evans single to put runners at 1st and 2nd. However
Messersmith locks in and gets out of the inning without a problem.
Bottom: After a brief rain delay (actually ate lunch), play resumed. Hunt leads
off and reaches on a Roberts’s error. However, Rogers strands Hunt at 3rd.
2nd Inning:
Top: Money leads off with a single and steals second. Sanguillen then singles
him to 3rd. With the infield in, Roberts pops out to first. In a key at bat,
Rogers draws the 3-2 walk to load the bases for the top of the order. Monday,
grounds out to Russell which scores the first run of the game. Old Mill leads
1-0
Bottom: 1-2-3
3rd Inning:
Top: McCovey reaches on a 1-out single, but is stranded
Bottom: 1-2-3
4th Inning:
Top: 1-2-3
Bottom: North walks to lead it off and steals 2nd. When Powell grounds to
Roberts, North (who moved to 3rd on a Johnson ground out) tries to come home and
is thrown out!
5th Inning:
Top: 1-2-3
Bottom: 1-2-3
6th Inning:
Top: 1-2-3
Bottom: Rogers keeps his no-hitter in tact going 1-2-3
7th Inning:
Top: Marshall comes in and gives up a 2-out single to Rogers, but stalls the
Legends
Bottom: No hitter still stands as Rogers cruises 1-2-3
8th Inning:
Top: McCovey gets the Legends an insurance run with a solo shot.
Bottom: With 2-outs, Russell walks. With the hit-and-run on, Mota hits it off a
diving Roberts' glove and runners are at the corners. The crowd begins to BOOO
as the hometown scorekeeper gives Roberts an error, rather than the first
Hollywood hit of the game. Still with 2-outs, Mota steals second on a broken
hit-and-run. With runners at 2nd and 3rd, Hunt grounds it to short where Money
can't get it out of his glove in time and is charged an error! Russell scores
the first Hollywood run in the series and runners are at the corners. Torre runs
for Hunt and steals 2nd base when North swings through the pitch. North then
flies out to DEEP right for the third out. Hollywood trails 2-1 but still has no
hits.
9th Inning:
Top: 1-2-3
Bottom: With only 1-out from a complete game no hitter, Rogers is pulled after
walking Pete Rose. Doug Bird comes in to get Bench and Old Mill wins 2-1 behind
a combined no-hitter of Steve Rogers and Doug Bird.
Old Mill up 2-0
Hollywood's inability to get anything going is their downfall as they head to
Old Mill, hoping to win 2 of 3.
Not much details from games 3, 4, & 5…..
Hollywood is STUNNED after losing 2 home games in games 1 and 2 that they were
able to pull out 2 of 3 in Old Mill. I was so nervous that I did not type the
recap as I went (like I usually do). I saved the recaps and wrote it afterwards.
Actually forgot about the DH. Good thing it worked out for me :-)
Game 6: Steve Rogers v. Mel Stottlemyer
In what was the BEST game of the series, Hollywood faces their demon in the game
6 (possible) clincher at Old Mill. They will face Steve Rogers again, who no hit
them in game 2.
Both pitchers cruise until the 4th inning. With 2 outs, Garry Maddox steps to
the plate...The pitch ... hit deep ... it's going .going... it goes! ... Over
the left field wall and the Vampires lead 1-0!
Stottlemyer continues his domination until the 7th inning when Johnny Grubb
steps up. The pitch ... lined hard to right ... toward the gap ...ROSE ... cuts
it off on the bounce GRUBB has to hold at first and the tying run is on. Grubb
moves to 2nd on a ground out and third on a past ball. Then, with Sanguillen up,
Stottlemyer hurts his own cause. GRUBB takes his lead at third ... here he comes
... rapped back to the mound. STOTTLEMYRE grabs it ... throws to first ... and
he fires it right by POWELL. GRUBB scores easily ... tie ballgame! ... and
SANGUILLEN takes second on the play as the ball is returned to the infield ...
that'll be an error on STOTTLEMYRE.
Hollywood sends up Dick Dietz to pinch hit in the bottom half, hoping to get the
run back. Dietz walks on 4 pitches. With the hit-and-run on, Bill North knocks
pinch runner Danny Thompson to 3rd base. With 2-outs, Rogers does himself in
when he hits Boog Powell on a 3-0 count to load the bases. Then, not composing
himself, he walks Davey Johnson to give Hollywood the lead at 2-1!
3-outs from tying the series at 3 a piece, The "Mad Hungarian" takes the mound
to face McCovey, Grubb and Money. McCovey goes down on strikes! 2-outs away from
a tie....Grubb then steps to the plate. The pitch ... cut on ... and it's lined
to center field ... base hit ... North’s in and it skips by him ... he's after
it ... and GRUBB is in to second standing score that a double. Hraboski is
pulled for closer Mike Marshall. Money steps in. And now the pitch ... it's a
shot to left center ... way back ... NORTH jumps...it's off the wall ... MADDOX
grabs the ball ... throws it in ... GRUBB scores ... tie game! Money then steals
3rd on the 1st pitch which catches everyone off guard. The lead run is at 3rd.
Montgomery steps to the plate with 1-out, trying to bring Money in. Checks third
... the pitch ... lazy fly to center ... but he'll have to hurry ... NORTH
squeezes it ... MONEY tags they're waving him home ... here comes the throw ...
and he's ... safe at the plate! Old Mill leads 3-2!
Now it's Old Mill 3-outs from a World Series Championship! Doug Bird will have
to go through the top of the order, North, Torre and Rose. North locks in. The
pitch from BIRD ... hit in the air to center ... RIVERS roams over ... he's
there reaches back ... and makes the catch ... for the first out. 2-OUTS AWAY!
Bird then faces Joe Torre. The pitch ... and TORRE has hit it ... deep left
center ... it has serious distance will it hit off the wall? ... no! It’s long
gone! ... A home run for TORRE! THE FANS ARE GOING CRAZY AS Joe trots around the
bases ... he loves a trip downtown ... he's going NUTS!! TIE GAME!!!
The game moves in to the 11th! With 2-outs in the top of the 11th, Marshall
faces Montgomery. Here's the pitch ... swung on ... hit toward MADDOX in deep
left ... he's running back it's off the wall ... MADDOX is chasing it down ...
MONTGOMERY is digging ... he's around second he's heading for third ... here's
the throw from MADDOX ... safe!... Pinch Hitter Ron Blomberg steps up.
MONTGOMERY steps off third ... the pitch ... high ... and it gets by BENCH!
Montgomery’s headed home ... he'll score! OLD MILL Leads 4-3 on a WILD PITCH!!
Bottom of the 11th. The fans just won’t go. They want more late inning heroics.
The rest is (nearly) straight script. SOSA brings it home ... healthy cut by
HUNT ... but all he hits is air ... he's out on strikes...he's disgusted with
himself ... he had his pitch to hit ... but he just didn't make it happen ONE
DOWN! AGAIN 2-OUTS from the WORLD SERIES VICTORY! The pitch ... just off the
plate ... and he issues a free pass to Bill North. Trying to get into scoring
position...NORTH two full strides off first ... here's the delivery ... swung on
... strike! NORTH is off to the races...MITTERWALD with the quick release ...
tags him ... out at second! WOW!! HOLLYWOOD TRADES IN A HUGE RUNNER. THE FANS
START TO EXIT THE STADIUM LIKE "THE BAD NEWS BEARS IN BREAKING TRAINING" 1-OUT
from a WORLD SERIES victory!!! Now the pitch ... it's a shot to left center ...
that's a base hit ... TORRE rounds first RIVERS takes it on the long bounce ...
the throw to second ... and TORRE holds with a single the tying run is on. THE
FANS BEGIN TO PAUSE AT THE GATES!!!!
Pete Rose steps up to the plate. IN a surprising move, TORRE takes off ... it's
roped hard to right ... into the corner ... Grubb’s after it Toree's digging ...
he's around third ... coming down the line ... he'll score ... The throw in to
second ... not in time! ... And Rose's in standing with a double! TIE
BALLGAME!!! SOSA is pulled from the game and Jim Rooker is brought in to end the
threat and make it a 12th inning. Boog POWELL faces ROOKER..... ROSE edges a bit
more off second ... ROOKER comes to him ... swung on ... base hit down the line
to right ... GRUBB gallops for it ... he has it ... Rose’s around
third...they're waving ROSE in.. Here comes the throw home...here's the play at
the plate ... and he's ... SAFE!! HOLLYWOOD WINS HOLLYWOOD WINS!!! THE FANS ARE
GOING NUTS AND IT FEELS LIKE A CALIFORNIA EARTHQUAKE!!!
HOLLYWOOD 5 OLD MILL 4 IN 11 INNINGS!
Hollywood fans are excited and nervous as they enter the turnstiles to fill the
stadium for game 7. With Fire Marshall's on hand, Fault Line Park goes over
their approved capacity to the tune 60,124 fans. Hollywood was stunned in game 1
& 2 at home when they recorded only 2 hits off of Old Mill's star pitchers Jim
Palmer and Steve Rogers. They went down 3-1 in the series only to fight back to
even the series in dramatic fashion in game 6.
Game 7: Jim Palmer v. Bill Singer. In a rematch of game 1, Old Mill sends their
grade 19 pitcher to the mound.
1st Inning: Mickey River leads off the game with a single. Singer gets in to a
little more trouble after he walks Rick Monday. Then it gets even worse when he
walks Darrell Evans to load the bases with no outs for Willie McCovey. Ray
Corbin and Burt Hooten begin to get ready in the pen as Willie McCovey steps to
the plate. Hollywood's pitching coach goes to the mound to settle down Singer.
As play resumes, lets listen to the call: McCovey
steps in...the infield deep ... and the pitch comes in ... chopper back to the
mound ... SINGER up with it throws to the plate ... OUT for ONE ... the throw to
first ... DOUBLE PLAY! This puts runners at 2nd & 3rd with 2-outs,
but they must still face GRUBB. As the runners take their lead ... the pitch ...
it's hacked high and far deep into the right field corner ... could be trouble
for ROSE ... it drops both runners score ... GRUBB's stretching it ... the throw
comes in to second ... not in time! OLD MILL leads 2-0!
2nd Inning: After Palmer gets out of the first easily, Manny Sanguillen steps to
the plate. The pitch from SINGER ... and a long one ... into left field ...
MADDOX looks up ... adios! good-bye! ... arrividerci! OLD MILL leads 3-0! Being
that Hollywood had only 2 hits off Palmer in game 1, that looks to be plenty of
runs for the future Hall of Famer.
3rd Inning: With Hollywood trailing 3-0, Palmer faces the top of the order.
After getting North and Torre go down easily, Palmer faces Rose with 2-outs.
The pitch ... and he walks him ... Pete mosies down to first. That brings
up Boog Powell....The pitch ... swung on ... and it's pulled hard to right ...
that ball could go...IT GOES!! Good-bye Mr. Spalding!! POWELL's HOMERUN makes it
3-2 OLD MILL! The fans are going NUTS! Hollywood is back in the
game! Hollywood gets ANOTHER big 2-out hit!
Even though Singer settles down, he is pulled after 4 innings trailing 3-2. Al
Hrabosky comes in for Hollywood and pitches a scoreless 5th. Palmer cruises
through 5 but then he enters the 6th Inning
6th Inning: Davey Johnson leads off. Here's the delivery from Palmer ...
big swing ... hit deep to left field ... toward the gap..MONDAY got a late start
... he won't get it ... JOHNSON's trying for two ... here comes the
throw too late ... double for JOHNSON ... the tying run is now at second base!
As Palmer wipes his brow, Bench steps to the plate. The pitch ... base hit
right field ... it drops in front of GRUBB ... he has to play the
long bounce..JOHNSON holds at 3rd! Runners at the corner with no outs!
WHAT'S THIS??? The Old Mill Manager is asking Palmer for the ball????
WOW...He turns and calls on Lindy MCDANIEL. He will first face Garry
Maddux. LEGENDS playing for the double play ... the delivery from MCDANIEL
... ground ball to MCCOVEY..he charges it ... and it hits off his glove ...
JOHNSON will score ... TIE BALLGAME!!!! BENCH is safe at second ... and
MADDOX's on at first ... MCCOVEY is charged with an error. With no one out,
Bill Russell lays down a beautiful bunt which moves the runners over with
1-out. Al Hrabrosky is pullled for pinch hitter Dick Dietz. Infield drawn
in ... BENCH off third ... he wheels and deals ... way off the plate and
that'll be ball four ... and a free pass for DIETZ ... MCDANIEL is upset
with himself...his control has deserted him for the moment ... and the bases

off the lead run!!! MCDANIEL looks in against Torre. The runners take their lead

standing with a double! HOLLYWOOD LEADS 6-3!!! THE STADIUM IS ROCKING AS
HOLLYWOOD SCORES 5 OF THEIR 6 RUNS WITH 2-OUTS!
Top of the 8th Inning: After Hooton gives up a leadoff single, Hollywood,
leading 6-3, calls on closer Mike Marshall to get the last 6-outs.
