1984 DIVISION SERIES

 Cedar Park vs. Chicago –

Game One – Orel Hershiser goes 5 innings, gives up 5 earned runs – but Chicago comes out on top.
Chicago’s hitting went crazy. 18 Hits, 15 runs. Kent Hrbek goes 4 for 5 with a HR and 4 RBI’s
Chet Lemon goes 3 for 5, with 5 RBI’s. FINAL SCORE – Chicago tops Cedar Park 15 to 9.

Game Two – Chicago get sout to a 3-0 lead after 1 inning of play on a George Foster 3-run HR. Frank Viola holds down the fort going 6.2 innings.  Chicago’s bullpen takes over and holds Cedar Park to 1 run. FINAL SCORE – Chicago 5 – Cedar Park 1.

Game Three – On the road for game #3 Chicago scores 4 runs in the middle three innings to take game #3.
Von Hayesgoes 3 for 3, Jay Howell goes 6.2 innings giving up 7 hits and 6 walks, but only 1 earned run.
Chicago’s bullpen holds down the Bears in the final 2.1 innings. FINAL SCORE – Chicago 4 – Cedar Park 1.

Forth Worth vs. Old Mill –

Soto out-duels Dravecky in the opener as the two teams combine for only 8 hits. Perconte doubles home Rose in the third for the only run. FWP 1, OML 0.

Old Mill jumps ahead scoring 2 runs in the top of the first in game 2, but the Panthers scored 3 times in the 6th on singles by Jones and Hernandez holding on to win going up 2 games to none as the series moves to Old Mill. FWP 4, OML 2.
Ft. Worth ready for games 3 and 4.

The series moves to Old Mill with Fort Worth up 2 game to none.

Game 3 – Rick Camp vs Salome Barajos. The score would remain scoreless until the top of the 3rd when Roy Smalley hits a HR to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead. The Legends finally got on the board in the 4th on a wild pitch that would score Tabler. Steve Thompson would then hit a 2 RBI double to put the Legends up 3-1. Old Mill would get another in the 5th on an RBI double by Wohlford for a 4-1 lead. Top 7 – Smalley gets a 1 out single. Milt Thompson would walk and then be followed by an RBI double by pinch hitter George Vukovich to cut the Legend lead to 4-2. The score would get tied on an 2 RBI single from Jack Perconte. With 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th Dwight Evans would draw a walk. That would be followed by an RBI double from Winfield that gave the Legends a 5-4 victory.

Game 4 – Juan Berenguer vs Dave Dravecky. Dave Dravecky would pitch 5 innings of 1 hit ball as the Legends jumped out to a 10-0 lead after 5. The Legends would add 3 more over the next 3 innings en route to a 13-0 victory. Offensive stars were Jim Wohlford, Steve Thompson and Bob Boone, who combined for 9 RBIs.

Old Mill is ready for Game 5 at Fort Worth. Jim Gott will get the start.

Panthers get the scoring started in the bottom of the first when Parrish delivers a 2-out 2 rbi single. Rivers then doubles home Washington in the bottom of the 2nd to give Ft. Worth a 3 to nothing advantage with their Ace on the mound. Soto held the Legends’ hitters in check until the top of the 7th when Wohlford singled home Tabler, who had doubled with two outs. In the top of the 8th Winfield triples home Barrett. Next much to the home crowd’s dismay Evans hit a 2-run jimmy jack to put Old Mill on top, 4 to 3. The Panthers quickly came back when Durham singled and stole 2nd base to start the 8th and scoring on a Parrish single. In the top of the 9th Rayford doubled for Old Mill, but the two out rally magic didn’t re-appear for the Legends. In the bottom of the 9th with two outs and a runner on 2nd Hernandez delivered the big hit as he so often does in big games, “The pitch … there’s a drive to right center … it might be … it could be … it is!it’s all over! … holy cow, did HERNANDEZ ever cream that ball … Keith trots around the bases he loves a trip downtown … ” Ft. Worth makes it to the ALCS. FWP 6, OML 4
 
Hollywood vs. Western Mass  –

Game 1Ryan vs Mahler
Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls welcome to the Sanctuary home of the N L West Champion Western Mass Seahawks!! Please direct your attention to CF as long time Seahawks insider Ashley Whitacre and GM Heather Whitacre raise the Division Championship flag. Crowd goes crazy and start the well known Seahawk attack call. After a stirring rendition of the National Anthem, by Marshall Hall, the crowd settles in for the first pitch. Now to throw out the first pitch, please welcome Seattle Seahawk legend Steve Largent. Tonight’s starters will be Rick Mahler for the visiting Vampires and Nolan Ryan for your Seahawks.
Both teams go easily in the 1st. Ryan blows away the Vamps with some high heat in the 2nd. Leading off the 2nd Kingman slams a single to LF, now batting Reggie Jackson. Mahler checks the runer and delivers, Reggie swings. It is high, it is deep, it is GONE!!!!! A two run blast into the upper nesting area in RF bleachers. Both teams swap runs in the 4th. After 4 3-1 Seahawks. Ryan starts the 6th facing Tony Armas, Nolan has 10 strikeouts at this point getting Tony once with a 95 MPH heater. Ryan goes to the well once to often, Tony unloads a no doubter that landed on the roof of the Seahawks Hall of Fame in CF, estimated at 530 FT. Out comes Whitacre and will go to his pen. Sutter comes in to quell the uprising. The Seahawks tack on 3 against the Vampires pen. Hernandez comes in for the 8th and promptly gives up a solo shot to Eddie Murray. Seahawks go quietly in the bottom of the inning. Headed to the 9th 6-3 Seahawks. Searage comes in to close it out but makes it interesting as he yields a hit and walk.

Game 2 – J Niekro vs McWilliams
Again Mr October gets the Seahawks on the board with an RBI single in the 1st.Bottom of 2nd Hubbie Brooks digs in after a Kearney walk. McWilliams with the 0-2 delivery Brooks crushes it to deep CF Murphy tracking it back to the wall GONE!! Seahwks up 3-0. McWilliams then settles down to get the side. Niekro is almost perfect through 5 only allowing a two out single to Armas in the 2nd. Randolph leads off the 5th with a double, he then crosses home after two ground outs. Top of the 6th Richards PH for McWilliams, he is very deliberate in the box trying to slow the pace of Niekro, Joe unhappy with the ploy buzzes the tower and here we go. Richards not very happy grounds weakly to SS. Rickey singles to extend the inning, as he takes his lead he lets Niekro know “I am going and you can’t stop me.” Niekro gets Guerrero on a grounder to the mound.As Niekro leaves the field he quips back at Rickey. Horton on to pitch the 6th for the Vampires. Reggie unloads again to deep CF, back goes Murphy, leaps and oh what a catch, Reggie needs to file a police report cuz he’s been robbed.Next batter Larry Parrish is almost beaned as Horton is sick of the home run barrage. Larry digs back in, Horton sets and throws, and Larry connects a blast to LF Hendu does not even move long gone and hard to find. As Parrish slowly trots around the bases he is heard yelling at Horton ” that is my BIg Bang theory.” After six 5-0 Seahawks. After an uneventful 7th we head to the 8th. Armas leads off with a single followed by a Pena single. Now batting for Templeton Steve Braun. Out comes Whitacre and in comes Willie Hernandez. he promptly walks Braun to loadem up. Steve Henderson in to hit for Horton. He plates Armas with a SF to RF. 5-1. Here comes Rickey, Hernandez brushes him back with a high fastball and gets the Rickey stare. Hernadez yells in to Rickey ” steal that you ?><L” And here we go both benches empty. After everything is sorted out back to baseball. Hernandez facing Gantner, line shot to RC and to the wall, two runs score 5-3 Seahawks. Here comes Whitacre and he wants Searage. Dale digs in to face the lefty, Dale hammers it to dead CF back goes Murphy, over his head and one hops the wall, Gantner scores and Murphy stands at second. 5-4 Seahawks. Murray is walked intetionally bringing up Guerrero. Searage loses him and they are loaded.Searage now to face Armas and Seahawks broadcaster Kevin “the Mouth” Whitacre cannot believe he is leaving Searage in. ” You have Sutter and Sisk down there where are they?” Searage delivers and Armas lines one to LF, Jackson plays it on the hop and two runs score 6-5 Vampires. Searage gets Pena to gorund to SS to end it. Lucas in for the Vampires, after he K’s Kingman Reggie works a BB. As Reggie gets to 1B he is pretty stunned to see Mumphrye coming in to PR for him. Parrish pops out bringing up Kearney. Teufel is sent up instead, he lines one just inside the line at 3B. Mumphrey around second and hits 3rd under full steam. He is headed home and just slides past the tag to tie it at 6-6. Brooks flies out to end it. Searage retires the Vampires with the old Garlic ball in the 9th. Lozardo to PH for Searage and gets on via the walk. He is promptly picked off first. Randolph then singles, go figure. He is erased on a FC by Ward. Up comes Dwayne Murphy . Lucas delivers and so does Murphy as he splits the defense in RC to plate Ward with the winning run.

Game 3 – Denny vs Andujar
Again who else Mr October gets the scoring going. Andujar sets and delivers, Reggie hammers it to deep RF, Armas will turn and only admire it. Denny sets the Vampires down 1-2-3, after two 1-0 Seahawks. Both pitchers settle in and hold both teams down through the 5th. After one out the Seahawks regular season HR leader steps in. Dwayne unloads with a solo shot to CF 2-0 Seahawks. Guerrero triples with one out in the bottom of the inning, up steps Dale Murphy. action in the pen as Denny sets to deliver. swing and a pop up. Randolph squeezes it for out number two. Denny then gets Armas on combacker to end the inning. After 6 2-0 Seahawks.Seahawks go easily in top of the 7th. Murphy leads off the 7th with a walk and in comes Sutter, hegets Willard on flyout to LF. Gantner then doubles to make it 2nd and 3rd one out. Braun in to PH for Templeton and Sutter gets him on a shallow fly to Cf, both runners hold. Now batting for Andujar, Wayne Krenchiki. Sutter one out away from escaping the mess. Murphy dancing down the line, Sutter gets the signal and delivers, Krenchicki lines one to RC over goes Murphy and it is by him to the wall. Both runs score and we are tied. “That ball looked playable, Murphy took a bad route to that one. Henderson flies out to end it. It stays tied after the 9th, this is headed to extra innings. Both pens keep trading goos eggs till the 16th. Hernandez going into his fourth inning faces Murphy to lead it off. Dale grounds to 2B one out. Tony Armas now digs in, Hernandez seems to be a little weary. He pears in and delivers, Tony swings and launches it to deep CF, Murphy just head for the dugout. Long gone and not coming back anytime soon. Vampires win the marathon.

Game 4 – Candelaria vs Sutcliffe
Seahawks score one in the 1st and one in the 3rd and head into the bottom half up 2-0. Hendu leads off with a walk and Pedro ties it up. big bomb to LC, estimated 498 FT. Vampires add two more on rbi singles from henderson and Gurrero in the 4th, 4-2 Vampires. Bottom 6th Henderson walks and takes off, safe SB Rickey. Murphy unloads a two run shot, followed by a solo shot from Armas. 7-2 vampires. Rickey leads off the 8th with a MONSTER shot to LF, capping a 4-4 night with two SB. After the game Rickey did not have much to say but ” Rickey being Rickey, best leadoff man in da game.” Vampires suck the life out of the Seahawks and even the series at 2-2. headed back to Western Mass.

Game 5 – Mahler vs Ryan
rematch of Game 1 starters to decide the series. Bottom of 2nd Kingman gets the Seahawks on the board with a solo shot. Top of the 4th After a Murphy walk Armas steps in. Ryan delivers and armas connects. Long drive to RC back goes Ward, turns and leaps, he comes down with a glove full of dead homer. Murray reaches on a error by Brooks moving Murphy to 3rd. Willard hits a SF to Rf to plate Murphy and we are tied 1-1. Gantner then reaches on Brook’s 2nd error of the inning. Templeton singles home Murphy and vampires lead 2-1. Mahler pops out to end it. Heade to bottom fo 4th Vampires 2-1. Dwayne Murphy grounds out to start the frame. Up steps Kingman, Mahler sets and fires, Kingman unloads his 2nd blast to tie it at 2-2. we stay tied headed to the bottom of the 6th. after two qiuck outs King Kong strides to the plate. “Mahler has had no luck with big Dave tonight he might consider walking him” joked Vampires radio voice Nap Lajoie. Mahler runs the count full and delivers the payoff pitch. Kingman strides into it and mashes a long drive to LCF. Henderson can only watch it disappear into the Upper deck of the Cliff dwellers above the bleachers. estimated at 558 FT. Seahawks lead 3-2. Ryan retires the side in the 7th and leaves to a standing ovation, as Hernandez and Searage are throwing in the pen. Hernandez retires the side in the 8th as does Rucker for the Vampires. we head to the 9th 3-2 Seahawks. Ray Searage heads for the mound to the A/C D/C classic Back in Black. Willard leads it off for the Vampires, Searage gets him to gorund to 2B, one out. jim Gantner steps in and searge gets him swinging, two outs. Steve Henderson to PH for Templeton. Searage runs the count full, heres the payoff pitch, strike three swinging, Seahawks win 3-2.

 Lauderdale vs. Clem –

Game 3 – Between the Breakers and the Killer Zees pitted Mason against Wilcox. The Breakers score 2 to open the game. Stone leads off with a single followed by a walk to Matthews, Davis promptly singles in Stone. Young gets the sac fly and 4 batters in Wilcox is reeling. After a walk to Gross the bullpen was stirring, but the pitchers best friend showed up off the bat of Morgan, yes the double play. Wilcox from that point on allows only 2 hits and 5 walks going 7 innings. The Zees come though with 2 in the bottom of the 3rd to tie the game. Pryor leads off with a BB after a Oester out Wilcox singles followed by RBI singles from Wynne and Engle> Mason would go 8 allowing only 2 more hits and 3 more walks. We move to the Bottom of the 10th where Castillo walks Oester with one out, pinch hitting for the pitcher was Bergman who ripped one down the 1st base line for the walk off triple. Breakers 2 runs 4 hits 0 errors
Zees 3 runs 6 hits 1 error

Game 4 – Zees score 1 on an RBI single by Hill in the 3rd, then 2 more in the 5th on a 2 run homer by Balboni. Cowley goes 7 giving up 4 hits 5BB and striking out 4. Stanton comes on in the 8th and is greeted by a Davis homer followed by a PH single from Stone and a double by Gross. Scherrer comes in gets one out then walks the next to load the bases. On comes Odell Jones who walks one then gets the double-play ball to end the threat. The Zees get an insurance run in the 8th and the bullpen closes the series out in the 9th, Pitching got us here and we hope it continues though out the rest of the playoffs!
