DeWitt Tigers @ Corktown Bootleggers

Hampton Huskies @ Manhattan Gas Hornets

Series Preview: Time for the Huskies and Gas Hornets to nest around and play some slug at each other and the home crowd hopes for the best…..
Game #1: Manhattan up 6-1 through 5 decide to give LaTroy Hawkins some work – he faces 6 batters and hits most of the bats giving up 4 hits and a walk – no homers! But when the 6th inning was over it was now 6-4 Manhattan. Jay Powell comes in, gets out of the mess, but then repeats the poor performance in the 7th, Hampton scores 3 more and now has the lead! Craig Counsell is giving us fits – ends the game with 3 hits- on-base specialist Scott Hatteberg gets a single and double and walk. Damon Buford drives in 2. So it’s 7-6 Hampton going into the 9th but Rich Loiselle is not up to the task as Tino Martinez opens with a double. Moves to 3rd on a Hatteberg PB. Dave Hollins walks. Loiselle then whiffs the next batter and Jason Kendall (already a homer on the day[4]) fists one to RF scoring Martinez and moving Hollins to 3rd. Garrett Anderson then hits a walk-off SF and Manhattan salvage the game 8-7!
HAM 7-12-0 LP Loiselle (2-7) BS (2)
MGH 8-13-1 WP Russ Springer(2-0)
Game #2: This one was eerily similar and not. Hampton takes the big lead 7-3 into the 8th. Former Gas Hornets (and 1st round pick) Wil Cordero has a big 4 for 6 game against his former team. And that output included a 2 run homer (4) – but more on that to come. Huskies gave Kevin Tapani fits scoring 5 off him in 7 innings (3 earned). But then in the 8th, the dam burst and Manhattan plates 4 runs to tie the game! A Garrett Anderson 3 run homer (4) was the big blow to tie it up. Then we go scoreless until Cordero’s 2 run homer off Tom Martin in the top of the 12th. And Tom Gordon and Carlos Castillo hold that lead in the bottom half.
HAM 9-12-0 WP Flash Gordon (11-7) S Castillo (1)
MGH 9-12-1 LP Martin (4-5)
Game #3: LaTroy Hawkins comes out to start this one and gives up an unearned run in the 1st. Then he yields nothing else through 6. He leaves for a pinch-hitter in the 6th and it’s a good one as Matt Stairs comes up and slugs a 3 run homer (32) to cap off a 4 run 6th that propels the Gas Hornets to an easy 7-2 win. Craig Counsell again has a 3 hit game, but that was 1/2 the team’s output.
HAM 2- 6-1 LP Tim Belcher (10-13)
MGH 7-13-1 WP Hawkins (3-0)
Game #4: Matt Morris draws within 1 game of a 20 win season tossing a 5 hitter through 7 innings and giving up no runs. Anthony Telford comes on to complete the shutout. Derek Jeter (2 hits, 2 RBIs) and Dave Hollins (2 hits, homer [11], 2 RBIs) provide half the offense in a big 8-0 win.
HAM 0-5-2 LP Dennis Springer (4-9)
MGH 8-9-0 WP Morris (19-5)
Game #5: Back to the thrills! Gas Hornets grab a 3-0 lead through 5. Tim Wakefield giving up nothing. Then in the 6th with 1 out Jeremy Burnitz hits a towering pop up in front of home plate. Benito Santiago moves under it, but it floating around the stratosphere and by the time it comes down, he drops it – and Burnitz is standing on 2nd with a big grin. Cordero then singles him home but is cut down at 2nd trying for 2. B.J. Surhoff then leads off the 7th with a homer (9) making it 3-2 Gas Hornets. 2 outs and PHitter Greg Vaughn singles. And Craig Counsell comes up, hitless so far – WHAT? – and doubles scoring Vaughn to tie the game. Oh boy, a late come from behind tie game again.

We move to the 9th, Surhoff leads off with a single. John Wetteland is called on. Damon Buford reaches on a FC. Buford takes off and they nail him at 2nd – oops – Ray Durham drops the ball and Damon. is safe! Pivotal! The current batter is then asked to give up his spot and Al Martin comes into PH but he bloops out, 2 down. Eric Young into PH and he loops one to RF driving in Buford and the Huskies grab the lead 4-3. And they are in great shape as they bring in Ron Blazier (era 6.00) to close it out! Jason Kendall (just in because of a double switch) leads off hits a game-tying homer (5)! Durham, trying to redeem himself for his error in the top half, follows with a triple! Derek Jeter can’t move him. Then Lenny Harris flies out to LF – to Wil Cordero. Durham tags, the throw, he’s safe and the Gas Hornets again snatch victory from defeat! [And they manage in spite of 4 errors.]
HAM 4-9-1 LP Blazier (1-2) BS (3)
MGH 5-9-4 WP Wetteland (3-1)

Game #6: A big 30 hit adventure split evenly. Wil Cordero gets 3, Eric Young 2, Kurt Abbott 2 – but no Hampton homers. Big guns in this one – Tino Martinez, 4 hits, 2 of them homers (35) and 4 RBIs! 4 Gas Hornets had 2 hits each.

So Hampton scores first – 4 big runs in the 2nd, but with a single run in the 2nd, the 4 runs in the 3rd for Manhattan put them up 5-4. Then 6-4 in the 5th. The best the Huskies could do after that was come within 1 in the 7th, but Manhattan got it back in their half and hang on to win 7-5.
HAM 5-15-0 LP Tom Gordon (11-8)
MGH 7-15-1 WP Sterling Hitchcock (4-2) S Russ Springer (4)

Series Summary: Lots of close games – lots of hits and runs – and a shutout – but Manhattan is fortunate to win 5 of 6. And as August closes, the Manhattan dugout gets crowded as rosters expand for next week. And the Gas Hornets travel to Steel City in a battle of 1st (SCS) and 2nd (MGH).
