Harper Woods Expos @ Fort Worth Panthers

Series Preview: Start of the 2nd half.
Series Summary: Kevin Brown opens the 2nd half pitching a 2 hit CG shutout while the Panther offense rolls. Unfortunately, things return to normal as the Expos win the next 4 including two by shutout. Willie McGee gets 3 hits and Fred McGriff hits a 3 run homer as the offense wakes up again for Ft. Worth with Brown pitching as he goes 8 innings to get his second win of the series.

Harper Woods takes the series 4 games to 2.

Long Beach Titans @ Manhattan Gas Hornets

Series Preview: A couple of second-place teams meet in the Big Apple as Long Beach travels across the country to play the Gas Hornets – should be fun…
Game #1: Kevin Tapani gets another short start and makes the most of it with a 1 hitter for 5.1 innings. He’s supported with 1 run in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd as Jason Kendall has a 3 hit day (2 runs/RBIs). Then Manhattan adds 3 more in the 6th. Finally, the Titans score 1 in the 7th on a GlenAllen Hill rbi single, but that it.
LBT 1-3-1 LP Alan Benes (4-10)
MGH 6-13-0 WP Tapani (3-0)
Game #2: Game advantage shifts in game 2 as the Titans explode for 5 runs in the 4th to go from 1 back to up 6-2. Jeff King drives in 2 as does Mike Defelice. Then a 2 run PH homer by Jon Nunnally (9) in the 8th seals the deal as Long Beach win 9-4. Starter Francisco Cordova hangs around long enough for the win.
LBT 9-7-0 WP Cordova (6-4)
MGH 4-8-1 LP Sterling Hitchcock (0-2)
Game #3: Gas Hornets retake control scoring 2 in the 2nd and 4th as LaTroy Hawkins gets a rare start. He stumbles however in the 5th and exits giving up 2 runs. But that’s as close as it gets as Manhattan punches in n1 in the 7th and 3 in the 8th for an 8-2 lead. But the Titans do rough up John Wetteland in the 9th for runs capped by a Mark E. Smith ph double.
LBT 4-5-0 LP Ramon Garcia (7-7)
MGH 8-15-1 WP Anthony Telford (3-0) S Wetteland (16)
Game #4: Dave Justice bops a solo homer (23) in the 4th for the Titan’s 1st hit of Rick Reed and it was also the 1st hit of the game! Gas Hornets counter with a run of their own in the bottom half, but Jeff Kings singles in a run in the 6th for a 2-1 Long Beach lead. Tino Martinez singles in one in the bottom half to tie it and then Matt Stairs homers (21) for 2 runs a 4-2 lead. Gas Hornets get another in the 7th and Carlos Reyes and Ricardo Rincon hold on for a 5-2 Manhattan win.
LBT 2-5-0 LP Darren Holmes (1-3)
MGH 5-9-0 WP Reed (10-5) S Rincon (3)
Game #5: Down 3 games to 1, Chris Holt gets fired up and pitches a 3 hit CG victory. Gives up the 3 hits (a solo homer to Matt Stairs – 22) and a walks, run, and 3 Ks in a commanding performance.
And it goes rewarded as Dave Justice hits a 2 run homer (24) and Jeff King doubles in another run in the 3-1 Titans victory.
LBT 3-6-1 WP Holt (6-4)
MGH 1-3-1 LP Matt Morris (13-5)
Game #6: The Series finale sees Kevin Tapani again facing off with Alan Benes and it’s scoreless through 2 but then Manhattan knocks in 4 runs in the 2nd and another in the 3rd. Ray Durham gets 3 hits and 2 RBIs and Jason Kendall homers (2) for 1. Tino Martinez gets 3 singles (but whiffs with the bases loaded in the 3rd – could have been more runs). Tapani goes 5 and again gives up no runs. In relief, Tim Wakefield gives up a solo homer to Wade Boggs (3), but that was all for the Titans.
LBT 1-7-1 LP Benes (4-11)
MGH 5-10-2 WP Tapani (4-0)
Series Summary: Gas Hornets manage a 4-2 series win and get some innings in for a few little-used pitchers. Kevin Tapani gets 2 short starts, goes 10.1 innings, 5 hits and ZERO runs for 2 wins. The bad news of the week is Deion Sanders will miss next week after suffering a 6-day injury. But he does have a seat on the plane and will be in the dugout for the series at Blarney Drive.

Hollywood Vampires @ Castle Rock Hounds

Series Preview: Last place Hollywood visiting the second place Hounds, who are looking to make a move in the wildcard race.
Game #1: Game 1 is a back-and-forth affair, with the two teams knotted at 3-3 going into the bottom of the 8th. Telgheder pitched well for Hollywood and Mark Clark got a no-decision for the Hounds after pitching 7 strong. In the bottom of the 8th, though, Castle Rock pulls ahead with a 3-run pinch-hit homer from Sean Berry. The final is 6-3, Castle Rock.

WP: Dreifort (5-1)
LP: Telgheder (4-5)
S: Benitez (18)

Game #2: Chris Carpenter getting the spot start vs. Julio Santana (also a 3) in this one. He has been absolutely destroyed in his four previous starts. Let’s see how he does. Of course, both pitchers are fantastic, neither ceding a run until Hollywood plates one in the top of the 8th with a two-out RBI single from Deivi Cruz. But, Darren Bragg ties it up in the bottom of the 8th with a solo shot. Walbeck delivers an RBI single in the top of the 9th to make it 2-1, Hollywood. With two outs, Butler reaches on a single and steals second. Huskey strikes out, but Walbeck drops the third strike, and he reaches! That brings up Bonds with two outs, runners on the corners…bottom of the 9th….he strikes out to end the game. The final is 2-1, Hollywood. Santana throws a CG to win it.

WP: Santana (4-11)
LP: Carpenter (1-3)

Game #3: Castle Rock’s ace, Pettitte, gets the start in this one, facing a fellow lefty in Steve Avery. After not delivering in the bottom of the 9th in the last game, Bonds starts the scoring with a solo shot in the 1st and Castle Rock adds two more runs. But, that is all they would get for the game, going scoreless after the first. But, Pettitte and Benitez combine to give up just 2 runs, and the Hounds take it 3-2. The Hounds bats have been very quiet thus far against subpar Vampire pitchers, but have done enough to take 2 out of 3.

WP: Pettitte (14-3)
LP: Avery (2-14)
S: Benitez (19)

Game #4: Kenny Rogers getting the spot start in this one (darn you IP minimums). Haynes for Hollywood has the grade advantage (8 vs. 4). Bonds hits a solo homer in the bottom of the 3rd to take a 1-0 lead. And, amazingly, that is the only run that either team would hit. The final is 1-0, Castle Rock, as Rogers gets a CG shutout.

WP: Rogers (2-3)
LP: Haynes (1-8)

Game #5: Dickson is itchy and downgraded to a 2 for this one for Castle Rock. Hollywood takes advantage, plating two runs in the first. But, the Castle Rock bats wake up and score 4 in the bottom half. The game goes back and forth, with Hollywood not letting up. They make it 5-5 in the 6th, but Castle Rock answers to take a 1-run lead in the bottom of the 6th. And, the Hounds bullpen does the rest of the work to keep it that way. Despite getting 16 hits and 3 walks, Hollywood can’t get the win.

WP: Rich Rodriguez (1-0)
LP: Telgheder (4-6)
S: Benitez (20)

Game #6: Clark vs. Foulke in the finale. Bonds gets his third homer of the series to stake Castle Rock to an early 2-0 lead in the 3rd. Barry adds another to make it 5-1 in the 7th. Each team scores several runs after that, but it’s never in doubt. The final is 9-4, Castle Rock.

WP: Clark (9-2)
LP: Foulke (2-8)

Series Summary: Castle Rock takes 5 out of 6 vs. Hollywood, making a strong move in the wildcard race. The bats don’t too much against the vampire staff, but they did enough. Merry Christmas to all!

Smoltz who gave up only 2 runs in his two starts held off the Marauders for over 9 innings before being relieved. Caminiti capped the game in the 12th with a walk-off GRAND SLAM. Santiago and Rodriguez held off the Marauders to set up Caminiti’s heroics. It’s a split.
