Steel City Sluggers @ Hampton Huskies

Series Preview: Two teams get into the elevator, one hitting the button for the penthouse and the other pushing all the buttons but ultimately winding up heading towards the basement as plummeting Hampton hosts division leader Steel City.
Game #1: The Sluggers bash out 17 hits in a romp over the Hampton sandlot team in a 14-1 romp that featured 5 unearned runs scoring on four Huskies’ errors.
Crusty Rear was 4/5 with four runs scored and three RBIs for the winners and launched his 14th homer of the season in the 1st inning off sadsack starter Paul Menhart. Shawon Dunston added three hits with two runs and an RBI and catcher Dan Wilson also got into the act with a couple of singles and two RBIs.
New faces Robbie Beckett and Dennis Springer did OK out of the pen tossing a combined 2-1/3 innings of shutout ball, but Chuck McElroy was hit around like a pinata for two innings and allowed six runs on five hits and just for shits and giggles tossed in a couple of walks. What a bag of crap.
Wil Cordero (yay!) had two hits in four trips as the lone bright spot for Hampton.
FINAL: Steel City 14, Hampton 1
W-Finley (6-2) L-Menhart (0-1)
HR-SCS: Greer (14)
Game #2: A much closer game but with the same outcome with Shawon Dunston driving in three runs in a 5-1 Steel City win.
Ben McDonald tossed seven shutout innings in which he scattered six hits with Darren Daulton having two hits and driving in a run in support.
The Youngs (Kevin and Eric) each had two hits for Hampton – all doubles – with Kevin driving in the lone Huskies’ run.
FINAL: Steel City 5, Hampton 1
W-McDonald (5-3) L-Park (3-9)
HR-none
Game #3: Steel City pitchers Joey Hamilton and Reggie Harris were flambeed as Jeromy Burnitz awoke briefly to launch a grand slam and drive in five runs in a 15-3 laugher win for Hampton.
Al Martin went 2/3 scoring three runs with a double, homer, and two walks, and drove in four runs for Hampton as they provided way more than enough run support for Tom Gordon who allowed just a run on two hits over five innings.
FINAL: Hampton 15, Steel City 3
W-Gordon (6-2) L-Hamilton (5-4)
Hr-HAM: Martin (6), Burn1tz (10)
Game #4: Hampton catcher Jody Red smacked a 3-run line drive over the right-field wall off Kevin Appier in the bottom of the 7th but it was just too little, too late as the visiting Sluggers hung on to take it 4-3.
Kevin Orie and Dan Wilson were standouts with two hits apiece from out of the armpit of the Steel City batting order while Tony Gwynn drove in two and scored one with a single and a walk. Wilson had the only extra-base hit for Steel City with an RBI double off Tim Belcher in the 4th inning.
FINAL: Steel City 4, Hampton 3
W-Appier (9-2) Sv-Stanton (5) L-Belcher (9-5)
HR-HAM: Reed (8)
Game #5: A wild game that once again featured a cruddy defensive display by the Hampton Huskies as they came back from a 7-0 deficit to tie it in the 5th inning only to have Paul Menhart come in a crap the bed as the Sluggers prevailed 10-7.
Tony Gwynn led the parade for Steel City with three hits and two runs scored with the bottom of the Sluggers’ order coming through again as Mickey Morandini and Kevin Orie each drove in a couple of runs.
Rusty Greer and Darren Daulton each had two hits.
Amazingly with 10 runs and 13 hits, none of the Steel City hits were of the extra-base variety.
In contrast, it seemed like all of Hamptons were as their 10 hits included 3 doubles (K.Young, Andrews, Cordero), two triples (K Young, Cordero), and two homers (EYoung, Burnitz).
Mehart allowed the final three runs for Steel City over three innings out of the pen in which he gave up four hits and three walks.
Newly acquired Dennis Springer pitched one for the record books in his first start for Hampton as he gave up seven runs (five earned) on nine hits in 1 inning. Nice.
FINAL: Steel City 10, Hampton 7
W-Wohlers (2-0) Sv-Osuna (15) L-Menhart (0-2)
HR-HAM: E.Young (3), Burnitz (11)
Series Summary: Steel City takes four of five with two of their wins being in close games, but in any event, losing a series was (for a change) not frustrating.

Final Score: Chicago 5 – Harper Woods 3

Win: Roger Clemens 10-5 (1.83)
Loss: Mike Mussina 9-5 (2.83)
Save: Billy Wagner #11

Game #5: Five players with lone RBI put a 5 spot on the board for the Demolition. Harper Woods Pinch Hitter Todd Helton has a Home Run, but that’s all the Expos can deliver as Chicago hands Pedro Astacio his first loss on the season.

Final Score: Chicago 5 – Harper Woods 1

Win: Todd Stottlemyre 6-4 (4.42)
Loss: Pedro Astacio 9-1 (2.83)

Series Summary: Harper Woods falls a little in the standings as the Demolition take 4 of 5 from the 1st place Expos.
