Harper Woods Expos @ Castle Rock Hounds

Series Preview: In what looks like it will be a battle of two very good teams, the Harper Woods Expos come into Castle Rock for a series.
Game #1: The Expos hop all over Cal Eldred early and often, winning this one by a 10-2 score. Pedro Astacio was fantastic, as he moves his record to 8-0 with a 2.59 ERA (pretty impressive for an 8 Grade). Expos put together 16 hits, including three each from Larry Walker and Rafael Bournigal.

WP: Astacio (8-0)
LP: Eldred (0-3)

Game #2: A great pitching match in this one, as it is Pettitte vs. Mussina. Harper Woods strikes first with a Hayes homer and an RBI triple from Mike Robertson in the 2nd. Hayes hits a second in the seventh to chase Pettitte, down 6-0 (3 were unearned). Mussina is virtually unhittable, giving up just two hits in 8 innings. The final is 6-0. An inauspicious start to the series for the home club.

WP: Mussina (8-3)
LP: Pettitte (9-2)

Game #3: Hermanson pitches a real nice game for Castle Rock, but Benitez blows it for him in the 9th, walking 4 guys and giving up 3 runs. The Expos bullpen outdid Castle Rock, pitching 3.1 of scoreless ball. The final is 6-4, Harper Woods.

WP: Grace (4-0)
LP: Benitez (2-3)
S: Eckersley (8)

Game #4: Castle Rock hoping to win three in a row just to salvage a split. But, Harper Woods has other ideas, as they jump all over Jason Dickson, plating 7 runs before he is tossed in the 5th for beaning Robertson. The Expos just pile on from there, scoring 16 runs. Grissom and Walker hit homers and have 5 and 4 RBI, respectively. The Final is 16-5. Colorado gets 13 hits but leaves 9 men on base.

WP: Wright (5-4)
LP: Dickson (4-5)

Game #5: Forget a series tie, Castle Rock is now just trying to salvage some dignity by winning a game or two. The Hounds bat finally awaken, as they take a 9-1 lead after four innings, with a homer from Clayton and doubles from Bonds and Dye. Mark Clark is cruising for Castle Rock, giving up just two earned runs through 7.1 IP. The Hounds bullpen does the rest and we have a 10-2 final.

WP: Clark (6-2)
LP: Mercker (5-4)

Game #6: A glimmer of hope for a two-win series as we head to Game 6. Eldred is still tired from Game 1, so we have a bullpen day in Castle Rock….never a good sign. But, the Hounds bullpen is up to the challenge, at least to start. It is a 4-4 game after 6, as Larry Walker hits a three-run bomb to tie things up for Harper Woods. But, Fernando Tatis sac flies Bonds in the bottom of the 7th, and the Hounds take a 5-4 lead. But, the happiness was short-lived, as Walker hits his second 3-run homer of the game to give the Expos a 7-5 lead! In the top of the 9th, with two outs, Walker comes up with two men on, and hits ANOTHER 3-RUN HOMER, his third of the game! Walker ends the day going 3-5 with 3 home runs and 9 RBI. The Expos pen gets it done again, throwing 3 innings of scoreless ball. Meanwhile, the top two relievers for Castle Rock, Dreifort and Benitez, combine to give up 6 earned runs in 3 IP (all Walker homers). The final is 10-5, Expos.

WP: Bailes (3-0)
LP: Dreifort (2-1)

Series Summary: The series is a couple of blown saves away from being a split. But, in the end, Harper Woods takes 5 out of 6 from Castle Rock in this one.

Sugar Land Skeeters @ Manhattan Gas Hornets

Series Preview: Sugar Land (37-21, 1st NL Central) comes to Manhattan (35-23, 2nd NL East) for a big series. Skeeters trying to nail down the Central by the break and the Gas Hornets committing to the race, try to catch up to Steel City…..
Game #1: All scoring was done by the 5th as the Skeeters get 2 in the 1st on a Roger Cedeno homer (1) and 2 more in the 4th on a Jay Bell homer (6) – he still hurts his former team all the time. Matt Stairs, however, wants to take things into his own hands (or bat) as he slugs 2 homers (14,15) but only 1 of them was for more than 1 run – and it was only a 2 run shot in the 4th. And that was it, 4-3 Skeeters.
SLS 4-8-0 WP Bobby J. Jones (6-3) S Randy Myers (11)
MGH 3-5-0 LP Tim Wakefield (5-6)
Game #2: Gas Hornets start fast in game 2 with a two-run Dave Martinez homer (3) followed by a solo Tino Martinez shot (11) in the 1st. But that was all they could do against Jose Mercedes and the crew. However, Manny Aybar and crew did one better limiting the Skeeters to 2 runs – a Mike Stanley homer (5) and a Jim Thome rbi double.
SLS 2-6-0 LP Mercedes (6-3)
MGH 3-7-0 WP Aybar, S John Wetteland (10)
Game #3: Another very close game and again, the scoring was done early, this time by the end of 3 innings. Craig Biggio leads off the game with a solo homer (6). And Ken Griffey doubles and Moises Alou drives him home for a 2-0 lead in the top of the 1st. Rick Reed had another tough 1st inning. In the bottom half, Ray Durham gives him a bit of support with a solo homer (8). and then Jason McDonald and Tino Martinez drive in single runs in the 3rd for a 3-2 lead. From there is was all goose eggs as the Gas Hornets prevail 3-2.
SLS 2- 5-1 LP Butch Henry (2-4)
MGH 3-10-0 WP Reed (6-2) S John Wetteland (11)
Game #4: The Skeeters return to offense for game 4, but don’t start it until the 3rd (and they were already down, 1-0). Gas Hornets start Matt Morris has been great this year, but Sugar Land got to him for 8 hits, 2 walks, 2 wild pitches and 4 runs in 6 innings. Oh, and two homers. Orlando Merced nailed a 2 run shot (2) and had 2 hits and a 3rd rbi. Ken Griffey had a solo homer (19) and Moises Alou left the building (7) for 2 runs. Dave Martinez hits a solo shot (4) for the home team, but the game never seemed anywhere near as close as the final 6-3 score. Mike Remlinger tossed the 1st 5 innings for the win and gave up 3 hits a 1 run – but 6 walks, but the Gas Hornets couldn’t take advantage.
SLS 6-13-0 WP Remlinger (6-2) S Randy Myers (12)
MGH 3- 9-0 LP Morris (10-3)
Game #5: OK – now we get to some real offense. Skeeter scores 2 in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd but only lead 6-5 after 3. Down 4-0 in the 2nd, the home team plates 3 in the 2nd and 2 in the 3rd. Another in the 4th gives Sugar Land a 7-5 lead but then the Gas Hornets get 1 in the 5th and a 3 in the 6th to grab a 9-8 lead! But of course, that wasn’t going to last as the Skeeters plate 3 in the 8th (home team trying to get a few innings in for Carlos Reyes – not good against the Skeeters!!). By now Ken Griffey has homered twice (21) and driven in 3. Jay Bell (killing the Gas Hornets AGAIN) is 3 for 5, 4 RBIs, and a homer (7) and Jim Thome has unloaded (9) for 2 runs. 13 big hits for Sugar Land – 6 of them extra-base hits. So, the Skeeters take a 10-9 with that 3 spot and Eric Gunderson comes in for the 8th and sure enough, Matt Stairs connects for a 2 run homer (16) and an 11-10 lead! John Wetteland makes it stand. Bunches of offensive stars in this game.
SLS 10-13-1 LP Gunderson (0-2) BS (1)
MGH 11-15-1 WP Tom Martin (3-3) BS (3), S Wetteland (12)
Game #6: With the series standing 3-2 Manhattan, game 6 looms big. Then Jim Thome hits a 2 run homer (10) off Tim Wakefield in the 4th. However, the Gas Hornets retaliate with 3 of their own in the bottom half off of Jose Mercedes – 2 of the runs are unearned as a result of a Mike Stanley error and some passed balls – he did however manage to throw out a base runner. Then in the 7th, Moises Alou connected for a 2 run homer (8) and that put Sugar Land up 4-3. And former (at one time only bullpen star) reliever Bob Patterson and Scott Sullivan were able to shut down the Gas Hornets and keep it that way to split the series.
SLS 4-5-1 WP Jeff Nelson (2-0) S Sullivan (2)
MGH 3-6-0 LP Wakefield (5-7)
Series Summary: Series splits 3-3 and it was an interesting series with moments of big offense and lots of tight pitching. Notably absent from the Skeeter rotation was Wilson Alvarez he’s now had 2 weeks of rest while watching the games from the dugout – not even scheduled. Gas Hornets management through maybe it was due to him having the same birthday as the Manhattan owner – but probably not…
