1997 PLAYER / PITCHER OF THE WEEK #9
New Hampshire Nighthawks @ Castle Rock Hounds
|Series Preview:||While this is a matchup between two second-place teams, Castle Rock comes in with a much stronger record (29-17) than New Hampshire (19-26). We shall see how it plays out. During election madness, the Hounds fans are looking for a fun diversion as the Nighthawks come to town.|
|Game #1:|| New Hampshire strikes first with a Lee Stevens RBI single to score Offerman. But, Rick Helling is off his game in the bottom of the first, as he walks five guys (oh those W’s) and gives up five runs before he is pulled with two outs. It is 5-1 after one inning. Meanwhile, Castle Rock is trying to squeeze some innings out of Grade 3, Chris Carpenter. They manage to get 6 IP, but he leaves the game only up 8-6. A Lawton home run puts the Nighthawks within 1 run. What was once an 8-1 lead is now 8-7! But, Armando Benitez comes in to hold off New Hampshire in the 9th, despite a lead-off walk to Damon. The final is 8-7, Castle Rock. Walks really did in NH, as the Hounds collected 9 free passes.
WP: Carpenter (1-0)
|Game #2:|| It’s another W on the mound for New Hampshire in Saunders, who is facing off against Dustin Hermanson. It’s a pitcher’s duel, as neither team scores until New Hampshire breaks through with a 2-out RBI single from Offerman in the top of the 7th. (unearned). Meanwhile, Saunders is cruising through the Hounds lineup. He gets a CG shut out, and the final is 1-0. Did NOT see that coming!
WP: Saunders (4-4)
|Game #3:|| Person vs. Mark Clark in this one. Person cruises through 7 IP, only allowing one run. Clark matches him, giving up only 1 earned run (3 overall) in 8 IP. But, the Nighthawks bullpen lets Person down, as Reyes and Bottalico aren’t able to hold a two-run lead. Castle Rock scores on an error in the bottom of the 9th to take it.
WP: Benitez (2-1)
|Game #4:|| Coming off that late-inning comeback, the Hounds are feeling good, and their ace, Pettitte, is on the mound. Castle Rock jumps all over Sele, plating 6 before he is pulled with two outs in the second, down 6-0. But, New Hampshire keeps clawing away, and it is 7-4 in the 9th, with the tying run at the plate. But, again, Benitez comes in to calm things down, and the score stays 7-4, Castle Rock. The Hounds are guaranteed at least a series split with two games left to go.
WP: Pettitte (8-1)
|Game #5:||New Hampshire has the pitching advantage in this one as Reuter (11) faces off against Dickson (7). Stevens gets the Nighthawks on the board with a solo homer in the top of the 1st. But Sean Berry returns the favor in the 2nd for Castle Rock, and Dye adds another solo in the 3rd, and then Bonds adds a sac fly, and Snow hits a homer to make it 4-1. Stevens is a one-man wrecking crew for New Hampshire, as he hits another solo shot in the 4th. And, the Nighthawks score 2 in the 6th to tie it up 4-4. Hounds manage to load the bases with only one out in the bottom of the 7th. But, Bonds strikes out, and Snow lines out to quell the threat. Hounds can’t plate a runner in scoring position in the 9th, and we head to extra innings. But, in the bottom of the 10th, Easley reaches on an error, steals second, gets bunted over to 3rd, and scores on a Clayton infield roller. The Final is 5-4, Castle Rock, and they have the 4-1 series lead.|
|Game #6:|| Castle Rock looking for an impressive 5-1 series win, while New Hampshire is hoping to salvage a victory in the finale. It’s a rematch of Game 1 with Carpenter facing Helling. In another year, this is probably a good matchup, but neither pitcher had a great 1997. Of course, now that I say that, it looks like a pitchers duel. The teams swap runs in the 4th and 5th, and we are tied 1-1. then the floodgates open, as Stevens (the real hero this series) hits a grand slam to make it 7-1, New Hampshire. Castle Rock starts to quietly chip away at the lead though, with 1 in the 6th, 1 in the 7th, and 2 in the 8th. But, Borowski holds on to get the save for New Hampshire, and the final is 7-5.
WP: Helling (3-5)
