Will they meet again in the Post Season? Corktown will likely have to win a tough series against the AL West runner up who already has 100 wins. |
Hampton Huskies @ Manhattan Gas Hornets | |
---|---|
Series Preview: | Two teams in a bitter struggle for 3rd place – Hampton is winning it easily – and 4th place – Gas Hornets are a shoo-in. In other words, these two teams are fighting for the best off-season tee times. |
Game #1: | Mike Maddox (W 3-0) throws a 4 hitter over 8 innings and the Huskies hit 4 solo homers to win the game 4-2. |
Game #2: | Gas Hornets lead 2-0, the Hampton ties it 2-2 in the 5. Huskies score 1 in the 9th, Manhattan ties it in the bottom half. Huskies score 2 in the 10th and that was it! Doug Bochtler the win (6-4), Jeff Juden the save (2). |
Game #3: | Gas Hornets get 4 in the 2nd and somehow their pitching holds on! Alan Watson (10-13) the win, Bob Patterson the save (22). Tim Van Egmond takes the loss (3-4). Mike Stanley (13) homers for the Huskies lone run in the 5-1 MGH win. |
Game #4: | Huskies rebound – but mainly because the Gas Hornets bullpen sucks! The Martinezes each drive in 2 for the Gas Hornets in building a 5-0 lead through 5, but then the bullpen comes in and Hampton gets 1 in the 6th and 4 to tie it in the 8th including a Kevin Stocker 2 run homer (3). Then the pitching settles for Manhattan – and it settled for the Huskies for a longer period and finally the Gas Hornets found their gas – as inflaming up the Huskies bats and Hampton pounces for 3 runs in the 11th – Alvin Morman (L 2-5) gives up 2 walks and 3 hits!). Paul Assenmacher goes the final 2 (of the 6) scoreless relief innings for the Huskies and gets the W (3-3). Final 8-5. |
Game #5: | Double Header day – game 1: 4-3 Gas Hornets after 1. 10-4 Huskies after 6, 7, and 8. Then 11-4 in the 9th before Manhattan pounces in the bottom half for 4 more runs – but they fall 3 short in losing 11-8. Al Martin (10th, plus 3 RBIs), Mickey Tettleton (15th, 2 RBIs) and seldom-used Kevin Young (twice, 9, 10, 4 RBIs) were the homers! Tim Belcher gets the win (13-9) |
Game #6: | The second game saw Mike Maddox (L 3-1) try for his 2nd win of the series, but he was weak (1) and it showed – 13 hits, 8 runs in 4.2 innings. And the Gas Hornets bullpen was able to keep the lead in a 9-4 nightcap and series finale. Brian McCrae hit his 20th and 3 Gas Hornets went deep. Bob Patterson got his 23rd save when he comes in in the 9th with the score 9-4 and the bases loaded and he gets the final out. The Final is 9-4 Manhattan. Craig Shipley gets beaned by Paul Assenmacher and his season is over! |
Series Summary: | Hampton’s better bullpen was enough to earn them the 4-2 series win. But, wait, there’s more – the teams go right back to Hampton for 5 more!!! |
Stockton Wings @ Winnipeg Goldeyes | |

Series Preview: | Winnipeg has gotten real hot at the end of the year. Our division is rebuilding so we locked up the playoffs weeks ago. |

Game #6: | game 2 of Doubleheader 6-2 Winnipeg in a bullpen game. |
Series Summary: | ugly Winnipeg sweep of Stockton. Pitcher of the week A Benes 9 inning, 5-hit, 1 BB, 9 strikeouts. |
Cincinnati Outlaws @ Valdosta Bombers | |
---|---|
Series Preview: | Cincinnati visits Valdosta with the Bombers in a position to clinch the division. |
Series Summary: | Outlaws hit 5 HR’s in the game 1 victory but the Bombers got back on course and swept the final 5 games. |
Santa Rosa Beach Bums @ Steel City Sluggers | |
---|---|
Series Preview: | The huge matchup of NL East teams, with Steel City holding a slim division lead on Santa Rosa. |
Series Summary: | Things start off great for SCS, winning the first two 6-1 and 4-2. But then we drop the next two 5-4 and 10-7 to even it up. What’s next? A double-header?! SRB wins the first game 8-7 (13) – never good to have deep extra innings in the first game of a doubleheader. But Steel City is able to get a strong 8 innings from Juan Guzman to win the last game 2-1, walking it off in the 9th.
So the teams split 3-3; what I’d expect from two very evenly matched teams. |
