Portland Mavericks @ Chicago Demolition
Series Preview: Portland who is about 20+ games behind the Demolition in the win column comes into the Windy City for a 6 game series.
Game #1: Chicago gets out to an early lead and holds on. Dan Wilson is the man for Chicago by going 4 for 4 with a Home Run & 2 RBI’s.

Final Score: Chicago 7 – Portland 2

Win: Pedro Martinez 9-7 (3.93)
Loss: Bob Wells 4-3 (3.18)

Game #2: Charles Johnson has 3 RBI’s for Chicago & Tony Phillips along with Edgar Renteria both chip in with 2 RBI’s as Chicago takes the second game of the series.

Final Score: Chicago 8 – Portland 5

Win: Todd Stottlemyre 6-11 (4.22)
Loss: Mike Sirotka 0-1 (19.29)
Save: Mike Timlin #18

Game #3: 3 Runs early & 3 Runs late help Chicago in this one. Cecil Fielder has 4 Hits including 2 solo Home Runs. Juan Guzman was dominant allowing only 1 Hit & throwing a Complete Game Shutout.

Final Score: Chicago 7 – Portland 0

Win: Juan Guzman 14-1 (2.12)
Loss: Frank Rodriguez 5-11 (4.41)

Game #4: Eric Davis led the way with 3 Hits & 1 RBI as Chicago squeaks by in this one. Bobby Witt threw a great game going 8 Inning of 1 Run ball.

Final Score: Chicago 2 – Portland 1

Win: Bobby Witt 5-2 (5.13)
Loss: Roger Pavlik 2-6 (5.40)
Save: Mike Timlin #19

Game #5: 3 Runs in the 1st and 4 Runs in the 6th are more than is needed for Roger Clemens. Eric Davis goes off with 4 more Hits.

Final Score: Chicago 7 – Portland 1

Win: Roger Clemens 10-8 (5.06)
Loss: Albie Lopez 2-3 (7.85)

Game #6: It’s a good thing the next day in the schedule is a day off as this one went 14 Innings. Deadlocked at 1 each after 9 it was exciting in extras including Portland turning a Triple Play with 2 on & none out for Chicago in the 13th Inning. That killed a nice rally. But a Walk-Off Home Run by Jeff Cirillo in the 14th ended it.

Final Score: Chicago 2 – Portland 1 (14 Innings)

Win: Mark Wohlers 4-3 (5.35)
Loss: Scott Service 0-5 (6.34)

Series Summary: Chicago got lucky with a couple of 2-1 Wins & walk away with a Series Sweep of the Mavericks.
Fort Worth Panthers @ Detroit Stars
Series Summary: Teams split series.
New Hampshire Nighthawks @ Castle Rock Hounds
Series Preview: A pair of teams sitting in third place in their divisions face off in Castle Rock, visions of future seasons in their heads.
Game #1: New Hampshire blows this one open with three in the 6th and four in the 7th. Belcher pitches a gem for the Nighthawks, giving up just one run across 7 IP. Damon gets 4 hits as well for a 10-1 Nighthawks victory.

WP: Belcher (9-7)
LP: Small (2-2)

Game #2: New Hampshire jumps all over Castle Rock pitching again, knocking Kenny Rogers around for 6 runs. The Hounds can’t get much going, and fall again, this time by a 6-3 margin.

WP: Worrell (4-12)
LP: Rogers (5-10)
S: Risley (7)

Game #3: As they have so many times this season, the Hounds ask Andy Pettitte to stop the bleeding. He does just enough to get the victory for the Hounds, as they pull out a 4-3 win. Inexplicably, New Hampshire tries a squeeze play in the 9th with nobody out and a runner on 3rd. It would have tied the game if successful, but it wasn’t. It got the Hounds out of the jam.
WP: Pettitte (10-5)
LP: Rueter (5-10)
S: Adams (12)
Game #4: The Hounds tie up the series by putting together an offensive onslaught, and just enough pitching to get by with the W. Although the Nighthawks cobble together 15 hits, they leave a bunch of players on base, and the Hounds pull out the 10-7 victory.

WP: Miranda (3-11)
LP: Sele (4-8)

Game #5: The pivotal Game 5 is a battle of crappy pitchers, as Parris faces off against Wojciechowski. The Hounds keep Wojo on the mound too long, as New Hampshire takes the 4-2 lead going into the 8th. The floodgates open that inning as the Nighthawks score 5 more off of the Castle Rock pen. 9-3 is the final, and the Nighthawks are guaranteed at least a split.

WP: Parris (1-2)
LP: Wojo (4-5)

Game #6: A rematch of Game 1, as the Hounds look to split the series. New Hampshire scores a single run in each of the first three innings to take the early 3-0 lead. But, Castle Rock chips away, and it is 4-3 going into the 7th. Belcher proceeds to walk in the tying run in the bottom of the 7th before being pulled. The Hounds go on to plate four more to take an 8-4 lead. But, Terry Adams implodes for Castle Rock, and the Nighthawks tie it up 8-8. It’s like the Hounds don’t want to split the series. But, instead, they pull it out in the bottom of the 9th, a Pagnozzi single scoring Ochoa with the winning run, 9-8 Hounds.

WP: Adams (5-4)
LP: Risley (1-4)

Series Summary: As would be expected, a relatively close series for two teams that are relatively close in the standings. The final is a 3-3 split.
Michigan Mauraders @ Santa Rosa Beach Bums
Series Preview: The fatigued Bums drag into the home series and face the Michigan Marauders. Both teams are vying for the venerable Wild Card spot.
Game #1: Marauders call on Radke (9-6, 3.42) to open the series against the Bums Adams (3-0, 3.13). The Marauders bang out a couple of hits in the 1st and a sacrifice fly to take an early lead, 1-0. Goose eggs until the 5th when Bums White tripled and was brought home by a Gagne single. Tie game. In the 9th Bums, Thomas doubled and Hudler brought him home.
Michigan 1 5 0 LP: Plesac 2b: Anderson 2; SF: Edmonds.
Santa Rosa Beach 2 6 1 WP: Castillo 2b: Hudler, Gagne; 3b: White.
Game #2: Marauders next call on Morgan (3-6, 9.05) and the Bums the workhorse Finley (7-7, 5.72). With 2-out in the 1st Marauders, Anderson goes deep. In the 4th Bums Thomas, Caminiti, and White singled in unison for a run. Tie game. Same inning, Greg Myers looped one over short for an RBI. With 2-out in the 6th Castilla walked and Lieberthal went deep, 3-2 Marauders. In the bottom half Alomar singled, Thomas walked and Caminiti hit an RBI single. Tie game. Marauders retake the lead in the 9th on back-to-back singles by PH Clark and Ripken.
Michigan 4 8 0 WP: Borland 2b: Edmonds, Clark, Ripken; HR: Anderson, Lieberthal; S: Parrett.
Santa Rosa Beach 3 10 1 LP: James Sb: Myers.
Game #3: Marauders trying to capitalize on the victory go to Estes (2-4, 3.80) against Bums Boskie (4-6, 5.65). Goose eggs until the 8th when Bums Caminiti and Hudler reached before a MacFarlane 2-run double. Then Estes walked Brumfield and Loretta and Perez banged a 2-run single. 4-0 just like that.
Michigan 0 4 1 LP: Estes 2b: Boone; Sb: Anderson.
Santa Rosa Beach 4 5 0 WP: Boskie 2b: MacFarlane; IBB: Brumfield.
Game #4: With that surprising outcome, the Marauders go to Gardner (5-5, 4.39) to face Bums Smoltz (11-2, 2.41). In the 1st, Marauders Castilla walked and Brosius banged him home with a double. In the 2nd Edmonds lead off with a homer, Marauders 2-0. In the 3rd Williams doubled, Palmiero walked and Castillo singled in the Marauders third run. In the bottom half Thomas singled and scored on a Caminiti double. In the 4th, Bums MacFarlane singled and waltzed around the bases on grounders culminating with a Castilla error, 3-2 Marauders. In the 5th Thomas drew a walk, advanced on a grounder and scored on a Hudler double. Tie game. In the 7th after Alomar and Thomas reach, Caminiti went yard to break the game open, Bums 6-3. In the 8th Caminiti struck again with a 2-out RBI double.
Michigan 3 7 1 LP: Gardner 2b: Brosius 2, Williams; HR: Edmonds. IBB: Ripken.
Santa Rosa Beach 7 10 1 WP: Batchelor 2b: Caminiti 2, Hudler 2, MacFarlane; HR: Caminiti. IBB: White; HBP: Thomas, MacFarlane; H: James.
Game #5: Marauders bring on ace Nagy (6-5, 2.83) to face Bums Appier (11-7, 3.50). In the 1st Marauder slugger, Lieberthal ripped a 3-run homer. Marauders add another in the 4th on a 2-out double by Anderson and continue to tee-off on the Bums best with a Palmiero RBI double, 5-0.
Michigan 9 12 1 WP: Nagy 2b: Anderson 3, Pamiero 2, Ripken 2; HR: Anderson, Lieberthal.
Santa Rosa Beach 1 5 0 LP: Appier 2b: Thomas, Brumfield; HR: Alomar.
Game #6: Marauders looking to even up the series with Radke (9-6, 3.28) against the Bums Rosado (8-1, 2.14). Bums start fast this game on a Thomas 2-run shot in the 1st. Caminiti added a 3-run shot with 2-out in the 3rd, Bums 5-0. Marauders get one back in the 5th on a Hoiles solo shot. Sanders made it a 5-run game again with his own in the bottom half. And the game turned into a softball game.
Michigan 6 11 0 LP: Radke 2b: Pamiero 3; 3b: Tucker; HR: Hoiles; HBP: Tucker.
Santa Rosa Beach 16 17 0 WP: Rosado 2b:Alomar 2, Caminiti, White, GMyers; HR: Thomas 2, Sanders, Caminiti, White; H: Villone.
Series Summary: Bums fortunate to walk away with the series victory and 4 wins.
Winnipeg Goldeyes @ Steel City Sluggers
Series Summary: Battle of first-place teams does not disappoint – Sluggers battle to a toughly earned split at home.
Blarney Drive Bandits @ Valdosta Bombers
Series Preview: Blarney Drive pays a visit to Valdosta.
Series Summary: Bombers hit the ball well and take the series 5-1.
Mexico City Chihuahuas @ Flossmoor Flying Squirrels
Series Summary: Flossmoor takes four of six from Mexico City, although the Taco Bell Dogs did get a win against Greg Maddux
Manhattan Gas Hornets @ Sugar Land Skeeters
Series Preview: Manhattan at Sugar Land (played by MGH per SLS request).

Tale of Two Cities as the teams split – Skeeters open up hot, Manhattan closes hot.

Game #1: Jay Bell (7) homers against his former team and Moises Alou and Ken Griffey Jr drive in single runs to give the Skeeters the 3-2 win in the opener. Mark Gubicza pitches 5.1 innings, 2 hits, 1 run and manages to be in at the right time for the win (7-10). Billy Taylor gets the save (14)
Game #2: 12 hits from the Skeeters and they turn those into 7 runs was way more than enough for Scott Aldred who goes 6.1, 2 hits, 1 run and gets the win (8-7). Orlando Merced homers (12), 2 hits, 2 RBIs and he’s joined by Ken Griffey Jr (24) who does the same thing. Final Score was an easy 7-1 win.
Game #3: Skeeters keep hitting as they pound out 15 hits and 10 runs. Orlando Merced homers again (13) – 2 more hits, and 2 more RBIs. Jim Thome went deep (20), had 2 hits and 3 RBIs. Moises Alou had 3 hits. But with all that firepower, the game was in doubt until the bottom of the 6th. Up 5-2, Hooks Foreman pulls Wilson Alvarez after 5.2 during what ended up being a 3 run 6th for Manhattan. That tied the game and earned a BS for Jeff Nelson, his 3rd. So he ends up getting the garbage win (4-3) when the Skeeters plate 5 in the 6th to run the score to the final tally of 10-5.
Game #4: Now the tide turns to Manhattan as the Gas Hornets overcome a Sugar Land 2 run first and they rack up 16 hits, 9 walks (THAT’S NINE) and 2 HBP (both to Dave Hollins) and win the game 13-4! Dave Martinez homers (6) – and it was a grand slam. Tino Martinez drives in 3 with 3 hits. Sterling Hitchcock goes the distance for the win (5-5) and Bobby J. Jones picks up the loss (5-5) – and gives up 9 hits and 5 walks in 4.2 innings – yikes.
Game #5: Gas Hornets keep up the winning ways in this one building a 6-1 lead in the 7th. Good thing because the Skeeters get 2 in the 7th and 3 in the 8th as Chris Haney (W 8-8) watches a Russ Springer throws gasoline. Jim Thome hits a 2 run homer and gets 3 hits and 3 RBIs in the game. Craig Biggio collects 4 hits and scored twice – but it’s not enough as Bob Patterson somehow quells the rallies for the save (12). Mark Gubicza suffers the loss (7-11) and Jay Bell gets dinged up in a fielding collision and will miss the series finale but will be ready for next week. Final 7-6 Manhattan.
Game #6: Terry Mulholland makes this one easy for Manhattan as he goes the distance giving up 5 hits and 1 run – a Jim Thome rbi single in the 4th. That made it 6-1 and that was the final. Gas Hornets got to Scott Aldred (L 8-8) in the 2nd for 5 runs that included some control and fielding issues. Matt Stairs hit a 1 run homer (5) just for fun and Mulholland (W 7-4) even got 2 hits, a rbi and scored 1.
Series Summary: Skeeters win the 1st 3, Gas Hornets win the last three. Some close ones and some no so close one. Either team could be scary if they had solid pitching – but they don’t.

Series Summary: Great series for the visiting team as Cal comes in and takes 5 of 6.
