Manhattan Gas Hornets @ Hampton Huskies
Series Preview: Fighting for a more comfortable spot in the cellar the Hampton Huskies host the Manhattan Gas Hornets in a minor NL East squabble.
Game #1: Jim Eisenreich went 4 for 4 doubled, homered and drove in four runs as a one-man wrecking crew to lift Hampton past Manhattan 6-4.
Eisenreich’s 7th of the year made it over the left field wall by an inch or two in the bottom of the 7th with one out and two on against LaTroy Hawkins spoiling his team’s 4-3 lead.
Alex Cole had three hits in four at bats to lead the visitors offense including an RBI triple in the 5th inning against Hampton starter Tom Gordon.
Paul Assenmacher tossed a perfect 9th for his 7th save.
Game #2: Another day and another 6-4 win for Hampton over Manhattan only Jim Eisenreich didn’t even have an at bat in this game.
Once again, the Huskies came from behind and in this case it was a four-run 5th inning against Brian Anderson that made the difference as Hampton went into the inning down 4-2.
BJ Surhoff smacked his 8th homer of the year as part of Hampton’s big inning with Al Martin on board to out the Huskies ahead after they tied the game when a passed ball by Tucker allowed Henry Rodriguez and Eric Young to race home. F-ugly but we will take it. Martin was the only Hampton hitter to register two hits – a single and a triple. Surhoff also walked twice.
Tino Martinez got the Gas Hornets on the board first with an RBI doubel in the 1st inning and then in the 3rd inning he and Wil Cordero combined to bring in three runs to give Manhattan a temporary 4-0 lead.
TJ Mathews tossed a scoreless 9th for the save and soon to be free agent Doug Drabek improved to 3-4 after allowing all four runs on six hits over five innings. He also walked two and fanned four.
Anderson fell to 2-9 after allowing six runs (four earned) on eight hits in six innings.
Game #3: Sterling Hitchcock was sterling, tossing a three-hitter as the Hornets shut out Hampton 6-0.
Hitchcock was great giving up just two singles and a double – all to BJ Surhoff – against the drowsy Hampton lineup. He struck out six and walked four but was never in any trouble.
Arthur Rhodes (2-5) and Hitchcock (6-6) were battling it out with the score tied 0-0 in the 5th before the Hornets exploded for four runs as they strung together six hits in the inning including RBI singles by Dave Martinez, Luis Polonia, Steve Decker and Wil Cordero.
Tino Martinez collected his 24th homer of the season off Jason Christensen in the top of the 9th adding insult to injury.
Game #4: Speaking of insults and injuries, the Hampton Huskies cruised into the 7th inning up 2-1 over the Hornets then went apeshit at the plate and turned it into a 14-1 rout.
Hampton had 19 hits in the game to Manhattan’s 4 and of course the Hornets had two players (Mike Cameron and Wil Cordero) collide and get knocked out for a few days.
Mike Stanley led the way for Hampton going 3/5 with three runs scored, six RBIs and just missed hitting for the cycle by a triple after clobbering a Hipolito Pichardo pitch deep into the left field bleachers with the bases full. It was Stanley’s 6th homer of the year. Mark Lewis (3) also homered and had three hits and drove in two runs. Jim Eisenreich also had three hits including two doubles and a walk. Brian McRae also had three hits including a double and he scored once and drove another in. Mid-game sub Dave Hollins didn’t fare too badly after coming in for Jose Oquendo. The veteran infielder was 2/2 with a run scored and three RBIs.
Orel Hershiser (13-4) won easily allowing one run on three hits through seven innings.
Hornets’ starter Shawn Boskie (7-8) got tagged with the loss, but it was reliever Pichardo who had the gruesome pitching line of 1.1 IP, 7 H, 8 R, 7 ER, 3 BB, 2 K, 1 HR (Stanley grand slam).
Game #5: Luis Polonia doubled and tripled and scored what proved to be the winning run as the offenses toook a vacation after the 5th inning and Manhattan hung on to win 3-2.
Allen Watson was very solid in a start for Manhattan, allowing just a pair of runs over seven innings with BJ Surhoff’s 5th inning homer the only extra base hit. Watson struck out four and walked two.
Bob Patterson threw two shutout innings to pick up his 11th save of the season.
Matt Stairs and David Bell also each had two hits for the winners. Stairs’s hits included a double while Bell’s singles drove in one run. Each also scored once.
Series Summary: Hampton narrowly wins the series 3-2 and tightens the race for the cellar a little bit. Ooooo the suspense.
