Fort Worth Panthers @ Castle Rock Hounds
Series Preview: An excellent Fort Worth team comes into Castle Rock looking to pad its West division lead against the mediocre Basset Hounds.
Game #1: We have a NO HITTER! Hideo Nomo goes the full 9 innings, giving up 0 hits and only one walk. One other player reached on an error. Total domination by Nomo, with 8 strikeouts. What a way to start the series. Willie Banks picks up the loss for Castle Rock. Edgar Martinez is the offensive star with 4 hits, including a home run.

WP: Nomo (7-3) – (No hitter)
LP: Banks (1-3)

Game #2: The second game looks to be a more even matchup with Rogers facing off against Kevin Brown. But, Fort Worth races out to a 4-0 lead through 4 innings. In fact, it is not until the bottom of the 5th that Castle Rock scratches a hit together. They went nearly 14 innings without a hit! Castle Rock finally scores a meaningless run in the 9th to make it a 4-1 game.

WP: Brown (8-2)
LP: Rogers (5-5)

Game #3: Hounds are looking to bounce back in Game 3, and they do by finally breaking through offensively. The Hounds get to Pat Rapp early and often, sending him on his way after 2.2 innings and 7 earned runs. Snow is the offensive hero for Castle Rock, with 5 RBI on 3 hits. Pettitte gets a quality start with 3 earned over 6 innings. Fort Worth loses Clark for 5 games as well.

WP: Pettitte (6-4)
LP: Rapp (5-3)

Game #4: A matchup of Grade 3 pitchers in this one with Lima vs. Bautista. It ends up being a close one, but Fort Worth edges out Castle Rock 7-6 by putting up a run in the top of the 7th that the Hounds can’t match. Edgar Martinez is the hero again, with 4 RBI on 2 hits, including a grand slam in the third. Fort Worth is guaranteed the series win.

WP: Jackson (3-1)
LP: Plunk (1-3)
S: Henneman (14)

Game #5: Castle Rock looking to salvage some dignity in the series finale, but they can’t. They can’t figure out Bob Tewksbury, and go down with another shutout (bookends for Games 1 and 5). The Hounds can only manage 3 hits, while Fort Worth does just enough to make it a 3-0 victory. Tewksbury goes to 9-0 on the season, which is remarkable!

WP: Tewksbury (9-0)
LP: Rekar (5-6)

Series Summary: An easily predictable 4-1 beatdown by Fort Worth over the Hounds in Castle Rock. Brighter days ahead we hope.
Michigan Mauraders @ Hampton Huskies
Series Preview: Underachieving Michigan (27-33) head east to Hampton (27-33) to face the non-achieving Huskies in a 5-game set.
Game #1: A case of either everyone wanted this game or no one did as Chris Hoiles drove in Vinny Castilla in the 2nd inning with a double off Doug Drabek to account for all of the runs in this game as Michigan opened the series with a 1-0 win.

Castilla actually had two of his team’s amazing five hits in a supporting role for the surprisingly brilliant Charles Nagy who scattered six hits and a walk while K-ing 10!!!!

Doug Drabek took the hard luck loss for the impotent Huskies while allowing just the run in eight innings of work. Drabek gave up five hits and three walks and struck out four in a wasted good appearance where we expect pretty much nothing from the guy.

BJ Surhoff had two hits for Hampton.

Game #2: Michigan scored twice in the first inning and then never looked back as they coasted to a 12-3 win in a 19-hit attack against Arthur Rhodes and Company.

The visitors had five players with 3 hits in the game – Bernie Williams, Brady Anderson, Jim Edmonds, Scot Brosius and Chris Hoiles. Edmonds (13) and Brosius (4) homered for Michigan with both coming at the expense of Joe Borowski who was thrown to the wolves in late-inning mop-up duty for Hampton.

Brosius and Edmonds (my favorite player from the 90s for those of you keeping score at home) each had three RBIs. Scott Sanderson tossed six innings to get the win and move to 1-2 and allowed just three hits and a couple of walks.

Tom Gordon had his first real rough outing in middle relief for Hampton allowing four runs (thee earned) on six hits in two innings while Rhodes in a starting role gave up four runs on nine hits in five innings.

Speedsters SJ Surhoff and Mike Stanley began a trend for Hampton in the series hitting triples for most of their team’s offense in the game.

Game #3: Mark Lewis drilled Jeff Parrett’s offering into the right field corner allowing Brian McRae to race home from 1st base for a walkoff 10th inning 3-2 win for the Hampton Huskies.

Bill Pulsipher (Michigan) and Jeff Juden (Hampton) were equally solid for their teams in a starting role giving up two runs apiece in six innings, but did not factor in the decision.

Hampton opened the scoring with two runs in the first inning courtesy of an RBI groundout by Jose Hernandez and an RBI single by Tony Clark.

Michigan got back a run in the 4th on a single by Bernie Williams and tied it in the 7th when Vinny Castilla drilled a ball through a drawn in infield to score Jim Edmonds from 3rd.

Game #4: Hampton’s five-run 5th inning ruined a great start by Mike Morgan and the Huskies went on to win 7-4 as their offense finally woke up.

The Huskies’ Eric Young and Chris Gomez each tripled in the game with Young’s clearing the bases in the big 5th inning.

Orel Hershiser (8-4) got the W for Hampton but pitched five lousy innings in which he allowed four runs on 10 hits and a walk. Morgan, for his part, allowed all five runs in five innings on six hits walking one and fanning six. Rich Delucia picked up his 4th save of the year with a scoreless 8th and 9th inning.

Cal Ripken (4) homered for Michigan.

Game #5: All Hampton as they cruised to a 6-0 win with Jose Hernandez hitting their team’s only homer of the series.
Series Summary: Hampton takes 3 of 5 over Michigan

Stockton Wings @ Steel City Sluggers
Series Summary: Steel City bats come alive and the Sluggers blow out Stockton in the first four games, only to drop the final game 1-0. Baseball is a funny game.
Blarney Drive Bandits @ Santa Rosa Beach Bums
Series Preview: Santa Rosa Beach hosts the powerful and league leading Blarney Drive for a five game set. The Bums have brought up a prolifera of strong arms, but still don’t match those of the Bandits. Hoping the Bums don’t get bushwhacked and can steal the series.
Game #1: The Bandits start off with Williams (1-2, 3.90) on the mound versus Bums Lopez (0-0, 2.35). In the 2nd after a Nunnally single Myers went deep to right, 2-0. In the 4th the Bandits Green goes deep with Murray aboard, tie game. Goose eggs until the 10th. Bandits Whitaker drew a walk to lead off the inning, Klesko singled and Murray singled bringing Whitaker home and Klesko to third, 3-2 no outs. Greenwell then singled, 4-2. Green then singled filling the bases.
Blarney Drive 6 12 2 WP: Bottalico; HR: Green; HBP: Walton.
Santa Rosa Beach 3 6 0 LP: Montgomery; 2b: Gagne; HR: Myers; SF: Alomar; Sb: Hudler.
Game #2: After taking a tight first game of the series the Bandits will test the Bums meddle with Randy Johnson (10-1, 1.43) on the mound versus the Bums ace Appier (7-3, 3.72). In the 1st Alomar walked and was eliminated by a Caminiti DP. However, Thomas followed with a single and came all the way around on a Sanders 2-out double. In the 4th, again, Green goes deep to tie it up, de ja vu. In the 5th Bandits Fletcher drew a walk, adavanced and scored on a Henderson 2-out single, followed by a Seitzer 2-run homer, 4-1. Bandits add a couple more in the 8th to solidify the victory.
Blarney Drive 8 10 0 WP: Johnson; 2b: Henderson, Seitzer; HR: Seitzer, Green; SH: Johnson.
Santa Rosa Beach 4 6 0 LP: Appier; 2b: Caminiti, Thomas, Sanders.
Game #3: Things not looking good for the home team as the Bandits send Wells (7-3, 4.17) to the mound to face Bums Smoltz (8-1, 3.80). In the 3rd Bordick doubled, reached third on a WP and scored on a Gagne error. And that would be it.
Blarney Drive 1 5 0 WP: Wells; 2b: Seitzer, Bordick; SH: Wells; Sb: Walton.
Santa Rosa Beach 0 7 2 LP: Smoltz; 2b: Gagne; Sb: White, Tarasco.
Game #4: With the series already in hand the Bandits send Hampton (4-3, 4.29) to the mound against Bums Vandlandingham (5-4, 5.28). Bandits fill the bases after the first at bats of the game. But Vanlandingham holds. In the 2nd, MacFarlane and Gagne scratched out singles and Vanlandingham doubled down the line scoring both. Bandits Whitaker answers in their next at bat with a solo shot, 2-1 Bums. In the 4th White doubled, advanced to third and scored on a Seitzer error. Gagne doubled to make it 4-1. In the 6th Bandits Murray doubled followed by a Greenwell homer, 4-3 Bums. In the bottom half MacFarlane reached on a Murray error and Gagne went deep, 6-3. On the side, in the 7th Alomar’s BA dipped below .230 on a ground out. With 2-out in the 8th, Bandits Greenwell singled and Green tripled, 6-4. Bandits were looking to steal the game in the 9th with two on and 2-out and Klesco up. But didn’t.
Blarney Drive 4 9 2 LP: Hampton; 2b: Murray; 3b: Green; HR: Whitaker, Greenwell. HBP: Whitaker.
Santa Rosa Beach 6 11 0 WP: Vanlandinham; 2b: White; Gagne, Vanlandingham; HR: Gagne; H: Ricci, Castillo, Gohr, Thomas; S: Aguilera.
Game #5: The Bandits call on Hanson (7-2, 4.36) and the Bums try to salvage the series as best they can by bringing back Appier (7-4, 3.94) on short rest. Caminiti singled and Thomas walked in the 1st before Nunnally banged an RBI single. In the 3rd, Reed walked and Henderson tripled him home, tie game. Bums fill the bases in the bottom half and Nunnally dribbled an RBI grounder. Then White dribbled an infield hit, before Macfarlane’s 2-run double to chase Hanson, 5-1.
Blarney Drive 1 6 2 LP: Hanson; 2b: Mayne; 3b: Henderson; SH: Hanson.
Santa Rosa Beach 9 11 0 WP: Appier; 2b: Alomar, MacFarlane; 3b: Sanders; HR: Gagne.
Series Summary: The Bandits charged into Santa Rosa Beach trying to steal a series and almost did. But the Bums pulled it together and won the latter two. The middle game ended 1-0 with no earned runs scored so what looked like a disastrous series for the Bums turned out to be a very close series.
Detroit Stars @ Corktown Bootleggers

Corktown 8-1
Series Summary: Detroit wins the series 4-1.
DeWitt Tigers @ Chicago Demolition
Series Preview: Chicago host the new kid on the block as the DeWitt Tigers roll into the Windy City for a 5 Game Set.
Game #1: Zane Smith is solid for Dewitt going 8 Innings, but Mel Rojas blows the lead in the 9th & the Demolition squeak by with a 1-Run victory.

Final Score: Chicago 3 – DeWitt 2

Win: Todd Stottlemyre 5-6 (2.89)
Loss: Mel Rojas 0-3 (5.40)

Game #2: DeWitt was mad & infuego. Matt Williams Homers & has 4 RBI’s. Dewitt Destroys the Demolition.

Final Score: DeWitt 8 – Chicago 0

Win: Bill Swift 3-3 (4.5)
Loss: Pedro Martinez 4-6 (3.46)

Game #3: Chicago couldn’t even see the Knuckler, let alone hit it. 3 Hits total for Chicago as Tim Wakefield dominates them. Sammy Sosa scores the lone run of the game on a Dante Bichette Single.

Final Score: DeWitt 1 – Chicago 0

Win: Tim Wakfield 8-4 (2.75)
Loss: Roger Clemens 3-8 (5.17)

Game #4: Matt Williams goes off, with 2 Home Runs & 7 RBI’s. Dante Bichette also Homers & knocks in 4 RBI’s. This was ugly from the start & only got worse for Chicago.

Final Score: DeWitt 18 – Chicago 1

Win: Mark Portugal 4-8 (5.07)
Loss: Bobby Witt 3-8 (4.92)

Game #5: Do you want Dramatics in a ball game? This one had it. Tied at 5 each after 9 full Innings of play, it went to the 10th. DeWitt scores 5 runs in the top & looks like they have this one in the bag. Chicago gets bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th with no one out. They score 1, and then a 2nd run on a Double Play. So two outs, down by 3 the Mobsters get a Single & score one more. Followed by another single, putting runners at 1st and 3rd. Dan Wilson steps in and pulls the trigger on a Mel Rojas slider for a 3-Run Game Winning Walk Off Home Run.

Final Score: Chicago 11 – DeWitt 10 (10 Innings)

Win: Jeff Suppan 1-6 (8.54)
Loss: Mel Rojas 0-4 (6.89)

Series Summary: Asked who is his favorite player Chicago manager Stray Corrado with out a doubt or hesitation said “Mel Rojas – Our whole team is buying beers for him at the airport bar as we speak”.

DeWitt wins the series 3 games to 2, but Chicago is feeling like they won it after the comeback in extra Innings in Game #5.

Flossmoor Flying Squirrels @ Mexico City Chihuahuas
Series Summary: Flossmoor wins 3/4 at Mexico City w/one rain out.
Portland Mavericks @ California Quakes
Series Summary: Portland heads south on I-5 to visit (and pummel) the California Quakes. Portland wins 4 of 5.
Long Beach Titans @ Manhattan Gas Hornets
Series Preview: Long Beach comes to the Big Apple in a hunt for the post season – Manhattan playing for respectability (no pitching to go with their potent offense).
Game #1: Gas Hornets get 3 in the 4th to come back from early 2-0 Long Beach lead. Then add a needed insurance run in the 7th as Titans PH Dave Nilsson drives in 1 in the 9th, but it wasn’t enough.
LBT 3-10-0 LP Dennis Martinez (6-5)
MGH 4-10-0 WP Sterling Hitchcock (3-4) S Hipolito Pichardo (2)
Game #2: Titans rebound from game 1 with 14 hits and 2 homers and a BIG 4 hitter tossed by Hamilton (8 ip, 1 walk, no RUNS) as Long Beach takes game 2 6-0.
LBT 6-14-0 WP Joey Hamilton (6-4)
MGH 0- 4-0 LP Terry Mulholland (0-9)
HRs: LBT – David Justice (11), Cecil Fielder (11)
Game #3: We go to extra innings before the Gas Hornets pull out this one. Titans get 2 in the 2nd and 6th, Manhattan gets 2 in the 3rd and 5. Then 5 scoreless innings ensue. Then with 2 outs in the bottom of the 12th Tino Martinez cracks his 21st in the walk-off homer variety. Glenallen Hill gets 2 hits and scores twice. Danny Darwin goes 1 for 1 with 2 rbis and Cecil Fielder hits another homer.
LBT 4- 7-0 LP Blas Minor (0-2) 12 innings
MGH 5-10-0 WP Mark Acre (3-0)
HRs: LBT – Fielder (12); MGH – Martinez (21)
Game #4: The second 6-0 shutout occurs but this time the win belongs to Shawn Boskie and the Gas Hornets. But this game for Boskie was nearly perfect. A lead-off single to Wade Boggs was the only Titans hit and a walk to PHitter Steve Scarsone in the 6th was the only other runner to reach base. Tino Martinez drives in 2 with 2 hits and a homer and Craig Shipley gets 2 singles and drives in 3.
LBT 0- 1-1 LP Chris Hammond (8-2)
MGH 6-11-0 WP Boskie (6-5)
HR: MGH – Martinez (22)
Game #5: Going for a big series win, Manhattan charges back from a 2-0 deficit by plating 2 in the 7th. But that only tied it up and we go to more free baseball. But the free baseball only last 1 inning as Long Beach erupts for 2 in the 10th. Nelson Liriano leads off with a double. Dave Nilsson grounds him to 3rd. Jose Mesa fans and the Gas Hornets and Chris Haney think they might have escaped. But they choose to give Carlos Baerga the IW. OK – walk Baerga to face Wade Boggs. He hits one over Mike Devereaux’s head scoring both Liriano and Baerga with a big double. That was enough for the win.
LBT 4- 7-2 WP Mesa (3-1) 10 innings
MGH 2-10-0 LP Haney
Series Summary: Manhattan gets typical offense and a bit better pitching this week to come up with a 3-2 series win. They stay home to host former rival Michigan. Long Beach goes home to host Winnipeg.
Cincinnati Outlaws @ Valdosta Bombers
Series Preview: Cincinnati at Valdosta. I had the series written up, didn’t save it and a power surge later…no writeup this week.
Series Summary: Cincinnati takes the series 3-2 as the Bombers pen blew a pair of 9th inning leads.
Sugar Land Skeeters @ Winnipeg Goldeyes
Series Preview: Battle of first place teams in the NL.
Game #1: Buhner homers and Glavines was great Winnipeg 6-1.
Game #2: Winnipeg wins 4-3 in extras.
Game #3: Timmons homers Saberhagen was awesome Sugar Land wins 5-1.
Game #4: Buhner homers big mac homers Candiotti was great 4 hitter Winnipeg wins 5-0.
Game #5: Sugar Land woke up 4 homers Biggio, Davis & Parent homer as Big mac homer wasn’t enough 10-4 Sugar Land.
Series Summary: Winnipeg is pleased to have won 3 of the 5 games getting good pitching vs a great hitting team.
