Long Beach Titans @ Cincinnati Outlaws
Series Preview: Two teams hoping to make the .500 mark collide in Cincinnati. Will this be as even as it appears with the standings?
Game #1: No is the answer to the Series Preview question…

LBT 5-8-1, CIN 1-7-0
Carlos Baerga’s second inning single drove in the game winner and his homer in the eighth blew the game open. Dennis Martinez allowed a single run over six innings to set the Titans up for the win.

Game #2: LBT 10-15-1, CIN 2-4-0
The Titans blew the game open with seven runs on nine hits in the top of the first inning to turn this into a laugher quickly. David Justice had a pair of homers and had five hits that drove in four runs.
Game #3: LBT 2-4-0, CIN 3-11-2
Chipper Jones delivered a two out single to right in the bottom of the ninth to give Cincinnati a walk-off win. It was the ONLY time in the series that the Outlaws led in the entire series…
Game #4: LBT 6-13-0, CIN 3-7-0
Cecil Fielder’s three-run homer in the top of the second proved to be enough in the 6-3 win. Glenallen Hill doubled and homer for the winners.
Game #5: LBT 7-10-0, CIN 3-4-0
Charlie O’Brien’s second hit of the day was a critical one, delivering a two-run shot in the seventh to provide the winning margin. Cincinnati battled back in the bottom of the ninth, as Mark Whitten’s three-run homer extinguished the shutout.
Series Summary: The box score should summarize it nicely:
LBT 30-50-2, CIN 12-33-2

Stockton Wings @ Blarney Drive Bandits
Series Preview: NL West contest featuring Stockton (13-32) vs. Bandits (30-14).
Game #1: Juan Acevedo could manage just 1 out before leaving with an injury. The Wings pen seemed a bit out of sorts with the early call and struggled all day. Randy Johnson pitched great allowing just 3 hits and striking out 9. Bordick goes 3-4 w/ 2 RBI, a rare day where he leads the offense.

SW2 BDB 6

W – Johnson (8-1)
L – Ryan (0-1)

Game #2: A 1-1 game heading into the bottom of 6 until Shawn Green drills a 3-run pinch hit bomb. Sirotka and Wells both pitched good games, just one lucky swing makes the difference. Wings out paced the Bandits 8-5 in the hits department.

SW 1 BDB 4

W – Wells (7-3)
L – Sirotka (0-4)
S – DiPoto (1)

Game #3: Both Schmidt and Hampton both hit like rented Mules as the score stood 6-5 after 3 full. Bullpens held things scoreless for a few until Stockton adds 2 in the 6th. They would add 1 more in the 9th to lead by 2 until Lou Whitaker hits the juggular with a Grand Slam in the bottom of the 9th for a walk-off winner. Wings pitchers struggled all day to find the strike zone (11 walks) keeping the Bandits offense embers glowing and it ended up burning them badly.

W – Service (2-0)
L – Wohlers (0-1)

Manhattan Gas Hornets @ Santa Rosa Beach Bums
Series Preview: Series has Santa Rosa Beach facing off with Manhattan
Series Summary: Santa Rosa Beach takes 4 of 5.
Valdosta Bombers @ Hampton Huskies
Series Preview: The apparently rebuilding Hampton Huskies play host to the Valdosta Bombers for a five-game set in chilly but slowly warming up Hampton.
Game #1: A close game with the score 3-2 headed into the bottom of the 7th is blown wide open when the Huskies capitalize on a Brent Gates’ error and score four unearned runs en route to a 9-2 win.

Brian McRae had three hits and scored a couple of runs while one-dimensional Mickey Tettleton clobbered his 9th of the year with a couple aboard in the 4th for Hampton. Arthur Rhodes gave up 10 hits over six innings somehow managing to survive with only two runs allowed.

The Bombers outhit the Huskies 13-11 in the game (all singles) but couldn’t move runners once they were in position to score ending two innings with the bases loaded and no runners coming home. The stranded 13 baserunners in the game.

Steve Finley started a trend for the Bombers with his 8th steal and ever-popular baggy pants Manny Ramirez had three hits in the game.

Game #2: A f-ugly game for pitchers as the teams traded punches continuously but sloppy defence by the Bombers once again was their Achilles Heel as they fell 11-7 to Hampton.

Two errors by shortstop Ricky Gutierrez and one by centrefielder Steve Finley translated into six runs in the 5th and 3 in the 6th for Hampton with six of the nine runs being of the unearned variety.

Howard Johnson (3) hit the lone homer for Hampton with Mike Stanley adding two hits and two RBIs.

The Bombers lived up to their name today smashing four homers off starter Jeff Juden including two by Mike Blowers (#12 and #13). Eric Karros (10) and Greg Colbrunn (3) also homered for Valdosta. Blowers had three hits and three RBIs to lead Valdosta.

Steve Finley stole his 9th.

Game #3: The Valdosta Bombers disembowelled Hampton starter Jack McDowell racking up 11 hits against the ChiSox righty in less than six innings in a 11-3 laugher.

Only Manny Ramirez (6) homered for Valdosta but he also had three hits, scored three times and drove in four runs in the game. Orlando Miller was 3/5 with two RBIs in a supporting role and, of course, Steve Finley stole his 10th base of the year.

SJ Surhoff had three hits and drove in two for a rare bright spot for the Huskies.

Shane Reynolds improved to 3-4 on the season with six pretty solid innings in which he gave up two runs on seven hits while striking out five and walking just one.

Errors by McDowell and Chris Gomez led to four unearned runs for Valdosta in the game.

Game #4: A solid performance by Jamie Moyer plus three flawless innings by the Valdosta relief corps translated into a 4-2 win for the visitors as the Bombers evened the series.

Manny Ramirez and Brent Gates each had a couple of hits for Valdosta and once again Steve Finley stole a base.

The Huskies did nothing much at all at the plate with Chris Gomez generating all the offence with a two-run homer off Moyer. It was Gomez’s 4th.

Miraculously no unearned runs in this game.

Game #5: A 9-0 romp for Hampton ends the series but a costly one as its arguably best hitter BJ Surhoff is injured for 9 days.

Mark Lewis had three hits to lead Hampton and Eric Young had his 3rd triple of the series. Bobby Jones tossed eight shutout innings for Hampton allowing only four hits but was sloppy with five walks against six Ks. Tom Gordon continued to enjoy his shift to the bullpen tossing a scoreless albeit meaningless 9th.

Steve Finley finally didn’t steal a base but he did commit his second error of the series.

Series Summary: Hampton’s “rebuilding” takes a step forward with a 3-2 win over Valdosta.
