Santa Rosa Beach Bums @ Hampton Huskies
Series Preview:  The Steroid Smackdown continues with Ken Caminiti and Company heading east to Hampton to create some more room between teams in the near claustrophobically tight NL East.
Game #1:  Kind of a cat-and-mouse type game with Santa Rosa scooting ahead early with a 4-0 lead by the 6th with Kevin Appier pitching brilliantly and then the brilliance faded and a bottom of the 9th run on a single by BJ Surhoff tied it 4-4 … only to have the Beach Bums knock around the dregs of the Hampton bullpen in their 3-run 10th to end it 7-4.

Ah well … a nice try by the boys to come back against Ape-man.

Reggie Sanders and Greg Gagne each had three hits for Santa Rosa with Sanders (3) and Devon White (2) lofting balls out of the park. White actually did the bulk of the extra inning damage with his blast coming off Tim (the Unfortunate) Fortugno … who I had never really had heard of before this season (and will promptly forget afterwards). White’s homer was especially nice since he did that so rarely last season with Hampton.

Jose (the Hammer) Hernandez continued his walloping antics with his 4th of the season as part of a 3/4 performance where he missed hitting for the cycle by that ever elusive triple.

Rick Aguilera recovered from blowing his first save of the season in the 9th to hold on in the 10th and swap the save for a win.

Game #2:  A well-pitched game on both sides was marred by some big innings as the teams swapped 3-run frames mid-game with Santa Rosa tacking on a few more at the start and end to down Hampton 6-4.

Santa Rosa’s middle of the order did all the damage with the 3-4-5-6 hitters going a combined 7/14 with five runs scored and six RBIs. Reggie Sanders led the scoring with three runs while Tony Tarasco did the bulk of the driving with three RBIs on a bases clearing double off the wall in the 6th.

Mike Stanley got the lone extra base hit – a double – for Hampton and he also scored and drove in a run in the Hampton 4th.

John Smoltz remained perfect at 3-0 while Orel Hershiser fell for the first time in the year to drop to 2-1. Smoltz was great for most of the game but wild in the 4th where he walked four of the six batters he walked in the game.

Jeff Montgomery’s perfect 9th earned him his first save of the season.

Game #3:  William Vanlandingham allowed just one unearned run in eight innings to help Santa Rosa to their third straight win limiting Hampton to just 4 hits as they triumphed easily 5-1.

Ken Caminiti (4) and Tony Tarasco (1) homered for the winners.

No one homered for the wieners.

A wee bit of trouble in the bottom of the 9th (bases loaded with two outs) forced Santa Rosa to call on closer Rick Aguilera and he fanned pinch hitter Mark Lewis to end it and get his 5th save.

Game #4:  Way more scoring than in the 2019 Super Bowl in this game … a vicious bloodletting for pitchers on both sides.

The Bums opened with three runs in the first – the Huskies countered with two of their own.

The Bums added another couple of runs in the 2nd to make it 5-2, but Hampton came back with 5! to make it 7-5 Huskies. Neither Chuck Finley of the Bums nor Tom Gordon of the Huskies saw the end of the 2nd inning.

Rich Delucia bamboozled the Bums in the 3rd to hold them scoreless while Hampton manhandled Tim Crabtree for another to runs to make it 9-5.

Whipping Boy and crappy reliever Tim Fortugno spotted the Bums to another couple of runs to make it 9-7 in the 4th, but the Huskies gutted Bums’ reliever Mike James for a three spot to make it 12-7 and then another 2 off Doug Wengert the next inning to make it 14-7.

Rick (Cy) White then took the mound in long relief for Hampton and was unhittable for three innings … unfortunately he pitched for 4 … and in the 8th the Bums scored three times to narrow the lead to 14-10.

Santa Rosa took advantage of Doug Bochtler in the 9th getting a run on three hits off him and having the tying run at the plate when Paul Assenmacher came in and actually didn’t blow the game but notched a strikeout to end it 14-11.

For Santa Rosa … Ken Caminiti had a monster day going 5/6 with three runs scored and seven RBIs on the strength of a double and homers #5 and #6. Reggie Sanders (4) also homered and drove in three with Greg Gagne going a humble 3/5 with three runs scored.

For Hampton … leadoff hitter Mark Lewis was 4/6 with a homer (#1) and five RBIs and Mickey Tettleton was 2/4 with homer #5 and four RBIs.

Game #5:  Much more of a pitchers’ duel than game four … Jeff Juden handled the Beach Bums nicely scattering three hits and three walks as the Huskies salvaged another win 3-1.

Paul Assenmacher got his 2nd save in as many days and Brian McRae was 2/3 with a run and an RBI and a potentially game-saving diving catch on a blooper by Devon White late in the game with two runners in scoring position for Santa Rosa.

Series Summary:  Two wins out of five against another very tough team. Not like we have any choice in the matter but we will take it I guess. Bloody hell …
Harper Woods Expos @ Castle Rock Hounds
Series Preview:  Castle Rock has its first home series ever after starting the season with 15 straight on the road. The management finally gets to see what kind of team we have. But, the schedule is not favorable as the 1st place Expos ride into town lead by a murderer’s row of Larkin, Davis, Walker and Mattingly.
Game #1:  It is a battle of mid-90’s Orioles hurlers as Mike Mussina is on the bump for Harper Woods and is facing off against Ben McDonald, who is good in limited inning this year. McDonald wins this duel of former teammates. JT Snow leads the way for Castle Rock with two hits, including a homer. McDonald, Ruffin, Plunk and Henke combine to keep the Expos to only 1 run. It is a game that will go down in Castle Rock franchise history. Final score, Castle Rock 3, Harper Woods 1

WP: McDonald (3-0)
LP: Mussina (1-2)
S: Henke (4)

Game #2:  Riding the momentum of the Game 1 victory, Castle Rock has its ace on the mound, Kenny Rogers, to face David West. It is a pitcher’s duel through 7 innings, as it is tied 1-1. But Harper Woods manages to plate single runs in the 8th and 9th innings, and Castle Rock does not have the answer. The score is flipped in Game 2, Harper Woods 3, Castle Rock 1.

WP: West (2-1)
LP: Rogers (2-2)
S: Maddux (1)

Game #3:  Mark Leiter faces off against Pettitte in the rookie’s home debut. The first ever Castle Rock draft pick, Andy does not disappoint, tossing 8 innings and only giving up one run. But Leiter matches him pitch for pitch. It is tied 1-1 going into the 9th and the Hounds bring in their ace reliever, Henke. Tom proceeds to give up two runs to Harper Woods. Castle Rock gets one back in the bottom of the 9th, and has a runner at 3rd, but Leiter throws the CG and closes them out.

WP: Leiter (3-0)
LP: Henke (0-1)

Game #4:  We are now in the back of the Castle Rock rotation, and it’s getting ugly. The Expos explode for 13 runs on 21 hits. Larkin has two homers, and Davis, Walker and Hayes each add one. The Hounds only escape the shutout through a Luis Gonzalez solo shot. Final score 13-1.

WP: Astacio (1-0)
LP: Batista (1-2)

Game #5:  Castle Rock is hoping to salvage a win to take 2 in the series. But, alas, it was not to be. Rekar vs. Erickson in the series finale. They are neck and neck through 6 innings. But, the Expos pick up 2 in the 7th and one in the 8th, and the Hounds can’t match them. Could be a long season for the expansion franchise…Final Score, Expos-7, Hounds-4

WP: Erickson (2-1)
LP: Rekar (2-2)
S: Monteleone (1)

Series Summary:  A disappointing first home series for the expansion franchise. It started out with a W in the opener, and proceeded to lose four in a row. Castle Rock just couldn’t get the bats going, especially Bonds, who is supposed to be the engine. He goes 3-18 on the series. His bat will be necessary if the Hounds want to compete.
California Quakes @ Mexico City Chihuahuas
Series Summary:  California wins the series.
Steel City Sluggers @ Blarney Drive Bandits
Series Preview:  Skeeters (9-6) take on Bandits (9-5).
Game #1:  Both starters go 8 innings and the Bandits lead 2-1 heading into the 9th. Bottalico gets the first 2 outs easily but Timmons stings him with a solot shot sending to extras. Pavlas struggled in his 3rd inning of work and Blarney takes game 1.

SLS 2 BDB 3

W – Service (1)
L – Pavlas (1)
S – None

Game #2:  This one was all Bandits as the struck both early and late. Green, Reed, Bordick and Fletcher all tally 2 RBIs.

SLS 3 BDB 10

W – Wells (2)
L – Alvarez (2)
S – None

Game #3:  Parent hits a solo shot in the 2nd innings and that’s all the scoring today. Blarney collects 9 hits to the Skeeters 2 but it just wasn’t meant to be as Langston was too much.

SLS 1 BDB 0

W – Langston (2)
L – Hampton (2)
S – None

Game #4:  Blarney never threatened as the Skeeters win easily. Griffey has a nice 4-5 3 RBI day and Timmons drives in 2.

SLS 6 BDB 1

W – Mimbs (1)
L – Hanson (2)
S – None

Game #5:  Saberhagen vs. spot starter Williams sees both pitchers last 6 innings. 4-3 heading into the 7th the Bandits tag Nelson for a pair to seal the series win. Fletcher with 3 big ribbies today lead the Bandit attack.

SLS 4 BDB 6

W – Karchner (1)
L – Nelson (1)
S – Bottalico (5)

Series Summary:  Blarney wins the series 3-2.
Chicago Demolition @ Fort Worth Panthers
Series Summary:  The Panther’s offense blows up the Demolition winning all 5 games by a combined score of 52 to 16
Winnipeg Goldeyes @ Manhattan Gas Hornets
Series Preview:  Manhattan’s home opener this week after a successful 15 game opening season road trip (7-8! that is considered a very successful week). However, to accomplish that they team did a LOT of hitting (we have no pitchers) and it really tired out a bunch of guys – and Polonia got injured and will miss the home opening series. Needless to say, we will still be gunning for the Goldeyes (or Goldilocks) from Winnipeg. They are just hoping to escape the frozen tundra – well, we will see about that.
Game #1:  Goldeyes give up a run in the first on a Tino Martinez rbi single, but that was all the Tom Glavine (W 3-1) and company gave up. Jay Buhner (5), Brett Barbarie (1) and Carl Everett (1) each homered in the 12 hit, 5 run attack as Winnipeg takes the opener 5-1. Dave Veres gets the save (4).
Game #2:  Gas Hornets again score 1st, in the 1st but the Goldeyes tie it in the 3rd and plate 2 more in the 4th for a 3-1 lead – a lead they never relinquised in a 4-2 win. Kenny Lofton had a double, 2 singles and a walk – and stolen base and an rbi. He and Omar Vizquel (2 hits) provide a dynamic 1-2 punch at the top of the lineup. Curt Schilling (W 2-0) goes 6, 6 hits, 1 run. Tino Martinez homers (9) for Manhattan and gets 3 hits as his season is off to a great start. Steve Reed (6) gets the save. Final 4-2 Winnipeg.
Game #3:  This game belonged to Jim Abbott (W 3-0) as he pitches 8, 3 hits, 7 Ks, no runs. He leaves with a runner on in the 9th by Steve Reed keeps it scoreless (S 7) as Winnipeg wins again, 2-0. Shawn Boskie did well gving up just 2 runs (1 earned) but he got no support and took the loss (1-3). Kenny Lofton triples and scores 1.
Game #4:  The Goldeyes must not have liked the Goldilocks reference and take it out on Allen Watson (L 2-2) in game 4. They knock him around for 11 hits, 5 walks and 6 runs in 6.1 innings. Omar Vizquel again does a great job leading off – 2 hits, 2 walks, 2 runs, rbi. And he had lots of help as Winnipeg gets 14 hits in the 7-1 win. However, it was Tom Candiotti who really shined – 8 innings, 6 hits, 1 run.
Game #5:  Manhattan was giving up or going to the let the brooms come out against them so in the series finale Brian Anderson tosses a 3 hitter for 7 innings and Bob Patterson and Mark Acre give up none in the final 2. Winnipeg was able to plate a one run in the 7th, unearned on a Scott Livingstone error.
HOWEVER – as good as the Gas Hornets pitching was – it was out done by Andy Benes (W 2-1) as he goes 6.2 innings, 7 hits, 8Ks and NO RUNS. Steve Reed again was called on to finish and he goes 2.1 innings facing 6 batters (he inherited 2 runners but got one of those DPs), fanned 4 and gave up NO HITS, NO RUNS as Winnipeg wins the finale 1-0 for the SWEEP! Ugh.
Series Summary:  The Goldeye just had too much pitching and enough hitting (Loften/Vizquel or Vizquel/Lofton is a tough way to have to defend) to sweep the series. Maybe next week we’ll get our 1st home win of the season.
Montreal Dreamers @ Portland Mavericks
Series Preview:  The 3-12 Montreal Dreamers visit the 7-8 Portland Mavericks.
Game #1:  Montreal comes out of the gate not looking like a 3-12 team. They outhit Portland 18-8 and Joey Cora has a 4-5 performance in easy win.
MON 11 POR 4
Game #2:  The Dreamer’s Darling pitches a complete game shutout, and Jose Offerman adds is own 4-5 performance, as Dreamers get another easy win.
MON 6 POR 0
Game #3:  Dreamers again shutout Portland, this time Jacome with the shutout for the Expos.
MON 2 POR 0
Game #4:  Portland gets a run on the board in the third… just to avoid their 3rd straight shutout, but Montreal cruises again.
MON 6 POR 1
Game #5:  The Dreamers’ Parris pitches the third shutout of the series, in a brilliant one hitter. Montreal only gets two hits… but managers to score 4 runs due to a Dave Segui 3 run HR.
MON 4 POR 0
Series Summary:  WOW. The Dreamers are awake and day dreaming of a playoff spot. They sweep Portland to get to 8-12, as Portland slips to 7-13. Dreamers on a 6-game winning streak.
Valdosta Bombers @ Long Beach Titans
Game #1:  Maldonado hit a 3 run HR in the 1st and Long Beach went on to a 5-0 win. Martinez gave up 4 hits in 8 scoreless innings to pick up the win.
Game #2:  This game was 1-1 in the bottom of the 8th until Justice singled in 2 runs to give Long Beach a 3-1 lead. When Mesa came in to pitch the 9th the home fans felt like the win was in the bag. But he gave up a game tying hit to Blowers and Sierra followed with a single knocking in Blowers with the go ahead run. It wasn’t looking good for the home team when there were 2 outs and a runner on but PH Samuel hit a 2 run HR to give the Titans a walk off 5-4 win.
Game #3:  This game was de ja vu all over again. It was tied 1-1 going into the bottom of the 9th. This time there was 1 out and a man on when PH Samuel hit a 2 run HR to give Long Beach a walk off win. This time 3-1.
Game #4:  Long Beach jumped out to a 6-2 lead but Valdosta came back and cut it to 6-5 with the tying run on base but Mesa came in to shut down the rally and pick up his 5th save in the 6-5 win.
Game #5:  The last game of the series was a slugfest as Valdosta won 9-7. Blowers had a HR and 5 RBI to lead the Bombers offense. After Quantrill gave up 7 runs in 4 1/3, the bullpen shut out the Titans over the final 4 2/3.
Series Summary:  Long Beach won 4 of the 5 very close games
