Chicago Mobsters @ Corktown Bootleggers
Series Summary:  Chicago squeaks by 4 out of 5 games to take the series 4 games to 1.
Steel City Sluggers @ Blarney Drive Bandits
Series Preview:  Sluggers take on a Bandit squad limping from an 8 game losing streak.
Game #1:  Both starters are smacked around but Wells allowed many more extra base hits and the run total showed it. Grace, Hudler (pinch hit homer) and Strawberry (pinch hit triple) all drive in 2 runs for the Sluggers. Bandit’s Jones has a nice 4-5 day and Hansen goes 3-3 in the loss.

SCS 8 BDB 5

W – Leskanic (2)
L – Wells (6)
S – Habyan (5)

Game #2:  Gardner was dealing as he allows just 4 hits in a complete game effort. Sean Berry with the big hit today, a 3-run dinger.

SCS 5 BDB 1

W – Gardner (7)
L – Belcher (16)
S – None

Game #3:  Smiley goes the distance for the 2nd day in a row for Steel City. He scatters 7 hits and 2 walks to even his record on the year. Rusty Greer has a big pinch hit RBI late as the Slugger manager keeps pulling the right guy for the job.

SCS 3 BDB 0

W – Smiley (7)
L – Weathers (10)
S – None

Game #4:  The Sluggers double up the Bandits in hits, 18-9. All 5 Bandit pitchers were touched up today as Steel City was an equal opportunity abuser. Even Swindell got in on the action with a 2-run double.

SCS 12 BDB 5

W – Swindell (5)
L – Leftwich (12)
S – None

Game #5:  A dozen losses in a row brings Randy Johnson to the hill, could he stop the bleeding? Pete Harnisch had a lot to say about that as he spins a dazzling 1-hitter. While he walked 6 the Bandits kept hitting it at people all day. Run support for Johnson will drop from its already paltry 2.4/game after this sad Bandit output.

SCS 1 BDB 0

W – Harnisch (6)
L – Johnson (10)
S – None

Series Summary:  Bandits are shut out twice and score 1-run once on their way to getting swept for the 2nd week in a row.
Detroit Stars @ Janesville Juggernauts
Series Preview:  A battle of last place teams!
Game #1:  DETROIT 4 JANESVILLE 0
Game #2:  DETROIT 7 JANESVILLE 6
Game #3:  JANESVILLE 8 DETROIT 5
Game #4:  JANESVILLE 8 DETROIT 5

Michigan Mauraders @ Hampton Huskies
Series Preview:  A fairly even matchup this week after the debacle of the one previous, Hampton (45-45) hosts Michigan (45-45) for a five-game set.
Game #1:  Al Martin doubled in the bottom of the 9th with two outs to drive in Domingo Cedeno for 3-2 Hampton win.
Scott Brosius had a couple of hits for Michigan with Martin getting three for Hampton to go with two RBIs.
HAMPTON 3 – MICHIGAN 2
W-D.Jones (BS4, 2-4)
L-Plesac (2-4)
HR-none
Game #2:  Michigan hitters pummel the Hampton pitchers mercilessly for 16 hits as they romp to an 8-0 win.
Dave Clark was a slick 4/5 in the game with only a triple in the way of hitting for the cycle. He scored twice and drove in three in the game and was one of three Marauders to beat the snot out of a pitch by Hampton starter Bobby Jones.
No matter, Michigan hitters did not play favorites in the game scoring five times on five hits and a walk in five innings off Jones, following that up with two runs on five hits off starter-turned-reliever Jason Bere, and then the grand finale of one run on five hits against Arthur Rhodes.
Rafael Palmeiro and his star-studded band of pharmacists added three hits with two RBIs for Michigan. Scott Kamieniecki allowed just two hits in six innings of very good starting pitching.
Dave Hollins wasted two hits for Hampton.
MICHIGAN 8 – HAMPTON 0
W-Kamieniecki (6-6)
L-B.Jones (6-9)
HR-MIC: B.Anderson (7), R.Palmeiro (17), D.Clark (5)
Game #3:  The Michigan Marauders bullpen collapsed in the bottom of the 8th allowing five runs as Hampton swung back into the saddle in the series with a 9-5 victory.
BJ Surhoff led the fireworks for Hampton by bashing a three-run shot off Rob Murphy which drove in two runs that got tagged to Dan Plesac. Surhoff had three hits on the day and drove in four runs.
Mickey Morandini had two triples for the Huskies and Bret Boone paced the Marauders with three doubles and two runs scored.
The atrocious Hampton defence committed four errors in the game.
HAMPTON 9 – MICHIGAN 5
W-Borland (BS2, 2-0)
L-Plesac (2-5)
HR-MIC: Brunansky (4); HAM: Surhoff (4)
Game #4:  Michigan’s turn to beat the living snot out of a bullpen as they broke open a 7-7 tie with six runs off the putrid relief corps of the Huskies to emerge with a 13-7 victory.
The two teams combined for 33 hits in the pitcher unfriendly contest with Michigan on top 18-15 including three-hit performances by Cal Ripken Jr. (all singles) and Dave Clark (two singles and a homer). Bernie Williams smacked a three-run shot off Hampton starter Doug Drabek in the 4th to give Michigan a temporary 4-2 lead.
Mickey Morandini was 3/3 and Chris Gomez was 3/5 for Hampton.
The Hampton shitty defence accounted for four more errors in this game which resulted in four unearned runs prompting the manager and general manager to simultaneously blurt out “For Fuck’s Sake … ” in post-game interviews.
Third-baseman Dave Hollins (who did not commit an error) was hurt for 14 days after witnessing the fielding horror show and falling on his sword.
MICHIGAN 13 – HAMPTON 7
W-Wickman (BS7, 3-2)
L-Borland (2-1)
HR-MIC: B.Williams (7), Clark (6); HAM: H.Rodriguez (7), Gomez (3), E.Young (6)
Game #5:  Scott Sanderson thoroughly dominated the Huskies in this game as the Michigan Marauders held off a late charge to squeak out a 3-2 win.
Sanderson ran out of gas late in the game but got all but one of the outs, allowing two runs on seven hits with one walk and two strikeouts.
The Huskies were fortunate to even stay close long enough to make it a game as starter Orel Hershiser was constantly in trouble thanks to allowing 11 hits and four walks in just over six innings.
Scott Brosius and Brian Anderson each had three hits for the winners. Jim Eisenreich had two for the losers.
MICHIGAN 3 – HAMPTON 2
W-Sanderson (8-5)
Sv-Wickman (24)
L-Hershiser (3-2)
HR-none
Series Summary:  Michigan takes three of five with Hampton’s dismal defence committing four errors in a game twice in the series … small wonder the team is tied for the league worst fielding percentage and had committed the league-leading 99 errors in just 95 games.   Hampton’s field manager was quoted as saying “I’ve seen better uses of leather in my S&M home videos.”
Portland Mavericks @ Harper Woods Expos

Long Beach Titans @ Tennessee Crackers
Series Summary:  Long Beach takes 3 of 5 from Tennessee.
Mexico City Chihuahuas @ Montreal Dreamers
Series Preview:  A couple of teams with similar records.
Series Summary:  4 games were one run game. Rosemere prevails 3-2.
Valdosta Bombers @ Missouri Black Bears
Series Preview:  Inter-division series, which looked like it might be an easier one for Missouri who was sitting in first place in the wildcard standings.
Game #1:  Whitehurst outduels McDonald to pick up the 3-2 win in the series opener. Steve Finley is the offensive hero with 2 RBI for Valdosta. Missouri does not even manage one extra-base hit.
WP: Whitehurst 3-0
LP: McDonald 11-4
S: Brantley 1
Game #2:  Missouri ekes out a walk-off in a 7-6 game despite giving up two unearned runs. Bonds and Piazza go deep.
WP: Wetteland 3-5
LP: Brantley 3-4
Game #3:  Jamie Moyer pitches a gem and Valdosta easily wins 5-2 over Zane Smith and Missouri. Karros and Sierra combine for two homers and all of the RBI.
WP: Moyer 7-6
LP: Smith 9-8
S: Nen 4
Game #4:  Another close one that Valdosta is able to take, 3-2. Missouri can’t get to a low-grade Cornett, only getting 1 run across 6 innings. Portugal has a strong start for Missouri, but it isn’t enough.
WP: Nen 1-3
LP: Henke 2-2
S: Brantley 2
Game #5:  Valdosta finishes off the series domination with another one-run win in the final game. Missouri got to Hentgen early with a 3-run homer in the first inning by Juan Gonzalez. But Valdosta scratched and clawed against Banks, and despite only one extra-base hit, got the 6-5 victory.
WP: Hentgen 7-10
LP: Banks 7-9
S: Brantley 3
Series Summary:  Valdosta really impressed this series. Hard to believe that this squad is currently 17 games under .500. They take 4 out of 5 and put Missouri in a tighter wildcard race.
Germantown Grays @ Sugar Land Skeeters
Series Preview:  A match-up of first place teams and future Hall-of-Famers.
Series Summary:  Sugar Land wins three of five, game 5 being on all solo homers, all three wins in their last at-bat (two walk offs).
Winnipeg Goldeyes @ Manhattan Gas Hornets
Series Preview:  Winnipeg comes to the Big Apple 3 games out and also the 2nd best Wild-Card record. They are hoping to beat up on the lowly Gas Hornets – well, offensively they are not too lowly ….
Game #1:  Down 3-1 after 3, the Goldeyes get 2 runs in the both the 7th and 8th to pull this one out of the fire. Groom (3-2) the win in relief. Bip Roberts gets 2 rbis in the game, Brett Barbarie and Kenny Lofton get 2 hits each and score 3 of the runs. Tino Martinez socks his 11th of the season in the losing effort. Final 5-4 Winnipeg
Game #2:  8 runs by the Goldeyes in the 2nd pretty much seal the deal. Robin Ventura hits a 3 run homer (16), Jay Buhner follows with a solo shot (21) and Luis Lopez triples in 3 in the inning. But not so fast, the Gas Hornets strike back with 4 in the 4th – but then they really get going scoring 10 (TEN) in the 5th. Tino Martinez gets another homer (12) and accounts for 5 of the rbis with 3 hits. Jon Vanderwal drives in 3, and Hipolito Pichardo not only gets the win in relief (2-1) but he also knocks in 2 runs with a single. Final 14-8 Manhattan.
Game #3:  Manahattan keeps the offensive racking up 11 runs on 13 hits – Tino clubs#13 andgets 3 more rbis. Luis Alicea gets 3 hits and scores 3 times. Winnipeg gets 11 hits, but leaves 9 on base. Milt Thompson homers (4) for 1 and Bret Barberie had 3 hits and 3 rbis. Tom Glavine the loss (10-9) as he got poundedfor 8 hits and runs in 3.2 innings. Brian Anderson (8-7) the win.
Game #4:  The Goldeyes get back to winning when Tom Candiotti (W 5-7) figures out Gas Hornets and limits them to 2 hits in 8 innings and shuts them out – Dave Veres finishes the job in the 9th for the save (13). Bret Barbarie continues the hot bat going 3 for 4, a run and 2 rbis and clubs a 2 run homer (6) to lead the offense in the 3-0 win.
Game #5:  Barberie goes hitless – but still gets an rbi (groundout). Mark McGwire hits a 2 run homer (5) in the a 3 run 1st. Gas Hornets match the 3 run first, but that was all the matching they could do. Kurt Manwaring goes 4 for 5 with 2 singles, a double and triple and drives in 1. Kenny Loften gets 2 singles and a walk and scores all three times he’s on. 2 run 5th was enough to win it, but a 4 run 9th put on the exclamation point in the 9-3 Winnipeg victory. Curt Schilling gets the win (9-6).
Series Summary:  Winnipeg couldn’t contain the Gas Hornets explosive offense a couple of times, other than that it was their week. Barberie was very effective: 8 for 19 with 6 rbis, 2 doubles and a homer. Tino hit 3 homers. Goldeyes win 3 of 5.
Wausau Timbers @ Flossmoor Flying Squirrels
Series Summary:  Flossmoor loses the first two games of the series, but then comes back and takes the last three quite handedly.
