California Quakes @ Mexico City Chihuahuas
Series Summary:  Mexico city wins one at home against World Series favorite California.
Corktown Bootleggers @ Detroit Stars
Series Summary:  Corktown beats up on Detroit 4 games to 1.
Sugar Land Skeeters @ Hampton Huskies
Series Preview:  High-flying Sugar Land visits walk-happy, ball bobbling, lack of power Hampton for five games.
Game #1:  Good God – we won. Hampton beats around Bret Saberhagen as they win easily 9-3. No errors and two home runs (Mike Stanley and Henry Rodriguez) … with both being big surprises. And while we at it Hampton pitching miraculously walks just one. Kirk Gibson, Ken Griffey (more homers than the entire Hampton team) and Jim Thome homered for Sugar Land.
Game #2:  Five walks, one error and no homers is the usual recipe for disaster for Hampton and this game proves no different as the home team settles into a more comfortable and expected performance with Sugar Land munching them up 7-2. Ken Griffey homered for Sugar Land and drove in three runs to give him a paltry 121 RBIs on the season. How one team managed to land Gibson, Alou, Griffey, Thome not to mention the steady parade of double-digit starting pitchers makes me wonder how the Skeeters managed to bamboozle the rest of the league.
Game #3:  Hampton is fringed to death as even the once-a-week players on Sugar Land can pop it out of the park better than anyone playing for the Huskies … Jose Oliva knocks out two and Zambrano gets one as the Skeeters coast to a 12-6 win. Mickey Tettleton popped one out in a wasted effort. The big victory for Hampton was knocking out Marvin Freeman for two weeks with a fastball upside the head from otherwise totally useless starter Arthur Rhodes. Big thanks goes out to Scott Bankhead for tanking in the 5th and 6th inning and making a close game anything butt. This fool got four outs but gave up five runs on five hits and a walk.
Game #4:  Easily my favorite game of the series as pretty much every aspect of the game for Hampton was downright atrocious. “Ace” Doug Drabek walks three in the first inning including one with the bases loaded and it just got better from there. Drabek lasted into the 4th inning when the score was still reasonable but left after allowing Kirk Gibson’s fly ball to right field ended in a head-on collision between Eric Young and Devon White. The Jamaican took the brunt of the collision and was knocked out for 12 days … likely will mean now not being able to get in enough plate appearances to stick with the team through to next year.

ARGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! How a guy who played 100 games out of 110 gets a 12 game injury is another issue I guess.

Anyway … back to our regularly scheduled programming.

By the time the dust settled, Hampton had committed five errors and the Skeeters had won 12-2 without hitting a single homer. Hampton relievers Toby Borland and Mike Remlinger became household names in Hampton (like toilet paper and plunger) by giving up a combined seven runs in the final two innings. Nice.

Moises Alou was 2/3 with four runs scored and Bob Hamelin was 2/4 with four RBIs including two RBIs on bases loaded walks.

Mike Remlinger gets special distinction for his performance where in one inning he not only loaded the bases and walked in Hamelin, but also hit Jim Thome and some guy named Rivera to bring in another couple of runs. that’s highlight reel stuff!

Game #5:  The Huskies hit seven doubles in the game including four off starter Steve Ontiveros in their 3-run 3rd inning, but that was all she wrote for the Huskies as the Skeeters pounded them once again 9-5. Ken Griffey and Darren Daulton homered for the winners. Nothing left the park for the losers. Griffey added another three RBIs to his already ridiculous season but barely kept his average up with the 2/5 performance (currently sits at .342). On the bright side, the lop-sided game allowed Orel Hershiser to log some badly needed innings.
Series Summary:  Sugar Land made easy work of the Huskies with the biggest blow being the 12-day injury to Devon White in a meaningless game.

Picture an atomic F-bomb as the most appropriate summary to the series.

Blarney Drive Bandits @ Long Beach Titans

Chicago Demolition @ Montreal Dreamers
Series Preview:  A couple of second place teams ready to square off.
Game #1:  It’s all Chicago as Clemens throws a one hitter in an easy 6-0 win.
Game #2:  Jackson collects 4 hits and as many rbis in another easy one. 10-1.
Game #3:  Montreal gets his first win of the series despite only 3 hits. 2-1
Game #4:  Chicago is back on the winning track behind Gallego three hits and 2 rbi. 3-2
Game #5:  Chicago scores 4 in T9 to take the series finale 8-7
Series Summary:  Chicago takes 4 out of 5
Valdosta Bombers @ Manhattan Gas Hornets
Series Preview:  Couple of last place teams – Valdosta and Manhattan meet in the Big Apple to determine who is going to vie with Blarney Stone for worst in the NL.
Game #1:  Valdosta takes the opener 3-1 behind a 3 run Ruben Sierra homer (12) in the 3rd. Wally Whitehurst (2-0) the winner gives up 7 hits in 6 innings and 1 unearned run. John Franco (15) the save. Gas Hornets won the hits game, 11-4 but couldn’t plate the runs.
Game #2:  Gas Hornets get quick revenge winning 9-4. Wil Cordero (11) and Santiago (8) both homer. Benito Santiago continues his great year (.320). Thomas Howard homers for the Bombers (2).
Game #3:  Jamie Moyer tosses a 6 hit shutout over 8 innings and John Franco comes in for the save (16) as Valdosta takes the 3rd game 3-0. Governor Jerry Brown of California makes an appearance and gets 2 singles, a triple and scores a run spurring on the offense. Thomas Howard has a 2 for 5 games with a double, run and rbi.
Game #4:  Looked like the Gas Hornets wanted back in the series when they scored 3 runs in the 1st including a 2 run Scott Livinstone single (he goes 2 for 5 with 3 rbis in the game). But the Bombers kept coming back – Jerry Brown again gets 3 hits and scores twice. Ruben Sierra drives in 2 and Thomas Howard homers in the 9th (3) to tie the game at 4-4. Game goes to the 13th when Manhattan finally finds a way to get 1 more run. Nen comes in with a runner on, relieving Jeff Brantley (L 3-3) and gives us the IW and then a PH rbi walk-off double to Felix Fermin. Steve Cooke (1-0) gets the win in deep relief.
Game #5:  5 hitter from Terry Mulholland highlights the Gas Hornets day, but the 6 hitter over 8 innings by Pat Hentgen and 1 inning relief from John Franco are even better. Mulholland gave up an rbi double to Karros IN THE 9th for the only run of the game. Valdosta takes the finale 1-0. Hentgen the W (6-10), Franco his 3rd save (17) of the series. Mulholland again suffers a tough defeat (4-13).
Series Summary:  Valdosta wins the series 3-2 and the Gas Hornets look forward to a crowded dugout next week.
Steel City Sluggers @ Winnipeg Goldeyes
Series Preview:  Winnipeg was tied for first but did not play well vs Steel City as they lose 3 of 5 at home, hurting their playoff chances.
Series Summary:  Steel city wins the series 3 to 2 at Winnipeg.
Missouri Black Bears @ Michigan Mauraders
Series Preview:  A strong Missouri team comes to Michigan.

Kenny Rogers secures his 5th win of the year. Kamieniecki gets the loss. Royce Clayton has a homer and 3 RBIs. Vinny Castilla hits a homer for Michigan.

Another disappointing game for Michigan’s starting staff. Zane Smith tosses 7 and earns his 9th win of the year. Dante Bichette goes 5 for 6 for the Black Bears.

POR 4 FWP 3
Game #5:  Portland’s aces Rodger Pavlik (just kidding) takes one for the team, giving up 18 hits and 13 runs to go with eight walks… hopefully ending his miserable season (12.10 ERA!!!!) Ouch
Every Panther gets at least one hit off him… and all except two had more than one.
FWP 13 POR 7
Series Summary:  Portland hopefully holds ground in the wild race, but faces a tough series vs the Harper Woods Expos next week.
