Detroit Stars @ Montreal Dreamers
Series Preview:  A couple of sub 500 teams squares off.
Game #1:  Despite 7 errors, it was a low scoring game. 2-1 Dreamers
Series Summary:  Montreal takes 3 out of 5. 7 errors in game one lead to a low scoring game … The next two games were a Kent festival as he collected 6 rbi’s. MTL took game 4 6-1 without a single extra bases hit.
Germantown Grays @ Blarney Drive Bandits
Series Preview:  NL East leading Grays’ take on the NL West’s bottom feeders.
Game #1:  Kevin Appier goes 7 full allowing just 3 hits and 1 run while Mike Williams is smoked for 9 runs over 5 innings. Grays explode in the 3rd with a crooked 7 spot and tack on a few more in the middle innings for a nice 10-1 lead heading into the 8th. Mike Bordick’s Grand Slam in the 8th and Kevin Seitzer’s 2-run job in the 9th got the Bandit fans to their feet a few times but never got within 4. Albie Lopez relieved Appier, faced 6 batters, and all 6 batters got hits – ouch! Tony Tarasco pulled something on the basepaths and will be out 5 days.

GG 11 BDB 7

W – Appier (6)
L – Williams (4)
S – None

Game #2:  Chuck Finley struggled in the 1st allowing 3 runs but that’s all Germantown would allow. Those 3 ended up being plenty as Tim Belcher goes the distance for Blarney tossing a 7 hit shutout.

GG 0 BDB 3

W – Belcher (3)
L – Finley (6)
S – None

Game #3:  Germantown triples up Blarney by scoring 4 in the 5th and 7th innings. DeJesus kept his record perfect with help from Caminiti (3-4 2 rbi) and Thomas (2 rbi).

GG 9 BDB 3

W – DeJesus (3)
L – Weathers (8)
S – None

Game #4:  John Smoltz got knocked around a bit late in the game after his offense got him a nice 6-1 lead. Blarney plates 4 in the 8th to make this a tight one but come up just short. Top 5 Grays hitters all drive in single runs.

GG 6 BDB 5

W – Smoltz (8)
L – Leftwich (10)
S – Fetters (14)

Game #5:  Randy Johnson continued his strong pitching but too bad the Bandit offense let him down yet again. Scheid goes 7.1 allowing just 1 run to turn over a 1 run lead to the pen, and they hold it. Alomar with a 2-4 1 HR day helped secure the Germantown W.

GG 2 BDB 1

W – Scheid (3)
L – Johnson (8)
S – Fetters (15)

Series Summary:  Germantown takes the series 4-1.
Sugar Land Skeeters @ Missouri Black Bears
Series Preview:  The top two teams in the NL Central meet up in this series. Missouri not likely to catch Sugar Land in the division race, but hoping not to cede ground in the wildcard race.
Game #1:  The Black Bears come out strong in this one. Homers from Bichette, Gonzalez and Galarraga lead the offense to a 6-3 win over Saberhagen. Ben McDonald with another quality start, giving up 3 ER in 6 innings.

WP: McDonald (10-3)
LP: Saberhagen (11-3)
S: Wetteland (16)

Game #2:  The tide turns (and will continue to) with Game 2. Moises Alou hits two home runs, and the Skeeters ride a complete game performance from Wilson Alvarez to a 7-2 victory.

WP: Alvarez (11-5)
LP: Rogers (4-4)

Game #3:  Game 3 is pretty much a mirror of Game 2, as the Skeeters ride a quality start from Marvin Freeman and a 4-hit game from Griffey Jr. to a 7-3 win.

WP: Freeman (10-3)
LP: Zane Smith (8-7)
S: Mercedes (4)

Game #4:  The Black Bears look to even the series with the ancient Charlie Hough taking the mound in a rare spot start. He shows his age, however, giving up 4 ER in 6.1 innings. Meanwhile, the youngster Butch Henry pitches a gem, going seven innings with 2 ERs. Alou goes 5-5 in this one, continuing his hot hitting. Final is 6-2 Skeeters.

WP: Henry (10-2)
LP: Hough (1-1)
S: Deleon (5)

Game #5:  Missouri is looking to salvage something out of the series after Sugar Land has taken three in a row. But, it was not in the cards. This game was a close one, ending up 2-1 for the Skeeters. Ontiveros gets tossed from the game after only 3 innings. But the Black Bears can’t get to the Skeeters bullpen. Sugar Land is paced by Gibson’s 4-hit game.

WP: Nelson (3-0)
LP: Banks (6-8)
S: Hudek (11)

Series Summary:  If there was any doubt about it, it is gone….Sugar Land is the dominant team in the NL Central. Missouri is hoping that this 4-1 drubbing is not going to hurt their wildcard chances.

Series Summary:  The over cocky Expos tried to big dick the juggernauts. They had to avoid injuries and it didnt work out as the visiting Janesville squad came into town took our women and kicked our asses. The Juggs win the series 3-2
Flossmoor Flying Squirrels @ Corktown Bootleggers
Series Summary:  Flossmoor takes 4 of 5, but every game was very close including two extra inning games taken by the Flying Squirrels (one went 15 innings).

Game #4:  Palacios threw 6 strong innings in the 4-1 Long Beach win. Lindman & Maldonado keyed the offense with 2 hits and a RBI each.
Game #5:  Finally a pitchers duel. Navarro threw a 5 hit shutout in beating Martinez 1-0. Dunston provided the only run with a solo HR in the 2nd.
Series Summary:  Long Beach won 3 of the 5 games against Steel City.
California Quakes @ Portland Mavericks
Series Preview:  The 70-win 10-loss California Quakes, shake their way to Portland riding an amazing TWENTY-THREE game winning streak. Just how special is the reason California is putting together? Well… they are 23 games in front of second place AL West Portland, which but other measure would be putting together a nice season with their 47-33 record. Not too shabby in a division with the Quakes.

The Quakes are second in the league in fielding percentage, second in ERA, and first in batting average. Portland managers second spot in average, but both teams trail the bombastic Sugar Land Skeeters in runs per game behind their 161 home runs.

Game #1:  California jumps out to a 4-0 lead in the 4thing inning, and Portland can’t really challenge, though they tried to make it interesting.
Kevin Mitchell is 3-4 with double and HR for Cali as they increase their streak to 24 straight.
CAL 5 POR 3
Game #2:  California held just a one run lead going into the 7th inning, but exploded for 4 runs to put the game out of reach. Twenty fifth straight win for Quakes.
CAL 7 POR 2
Game #3:  Portland scores two runs in the first inning for their first lead of the series, but California gets one back in the second. In the 5th inning, the wheels come off for Cali’s Alex Fernandez, as he gives up 5 runs for a rare black mark on his stellar season.

As the outs ticked away, it became clear that that California’s epic 25-game earthquake against the MWWL, was finally over. Amidst the clouds of dust and debris, the celebrating Portland fans demanded a curtain call… FOR THE QUAKES. They obliged, lining up in front of the dugout tipping their hats to the crowd, and their fans surely watching on their fuzzy 1994 televisions. The Mavericks walked down the line shaking the Quakes hands, and in the background, ushers quickly carted dozens and dozens of large silver kegs onto the field. What perfect timing for after game BEERFEST NIGHT! After the players had their first pours, fans were allowed onto the field to join in the festivities. After the kegs started to run low, but order of the Portland mayor, nearby bars were ordered to cart their kegs to the stadium. (We give our mayor that power… he points, and beer, flannel-clad beer-bellied men with beards so large last weeks breakfast is still hiding somewhere within appear. It isn’t a bad super power to have).
POR 8 CAL 2

Game #4:  So how would the teams recover from the festivities the night before? Apparently, one team was more accustomed to partying, as Portland’s Aaron Sele shut out the Quakes in route to the 7-0 win.

An un-named California player was actually found passed out on top the Jantzen Lady hung on the left field wall (https://www.providenceparkpdx.com/node/210)
POR 7 CAL 0

Game #5:  Unbeaten 9-0 Jeff Fassero for the Quakes vs the Roger Pavlik, who entered the game giving up more than an earned run PER INNING. Quacks jump out the lead as expected, but Portland’s offense answers back with 3 runs in the 4th and 5th innings to take a one run lead. At that point, users started lining up beer kegs on the roof of the Quakes dugout… and apparently the triggered drunkfest flashbacks as the team just wanted to pack up and get out of town. Portland adds one more run for the 2-run win.
POR 8 CAL 6
Series Summary:  California’s 25 game win streak ends, and it gets it first series loss in what must be a very very long time. Congratulations on the amazing streak George… the only long streak I can remember off the top of my head was a 19 game *losing* streak I had 4-5 years ago in a cards and dice league. =)

Winnipeg Goldeyes @ Valdosta Bombers
Series Summary:  The Goldeyes easily win 4 of 5 from a struggling Bombers squad.
Michigan Mauraders @ Manhattan Gas Hornets
Series Preview:  Former rivals Michigan and Manhattan meet up with the Maurders clinging to an outside shot at a Wild Card and the Gas Hornets going nowhere except maybe spoilers.
Game #1:  Mauraders spoil Andy Ashby’s 4 hit CG workout when Chris Hoiles drives in the winning run on a SF in the 8th. Earlier Dave Clark hit a 3 run PH homer (4) in the 7th to tie the game.
Final 5-4 Michigan. Gas Hornets rack up 11 hits in the losing effort including a Tino Martinez blast (10). WP Dave Plesac (2-3), S Bob Wickman (20)
Game #2:  This time the Mauraders get the double digit hit (10) and the 4 runs, but Scott Kamieniecki (W 5-5) only gives up 3 hits and 1 run in 7.1 and his reliever core keeps it that way. Homeruns from Cal Ripken (13) and a 3 run blast from Rafael Palmeiro (16) provide the offense in the 4-1 Michigan win.
Game #3:  Gas Hornets jump on Jack Morris (L 4-6) for 5 hits a walk and 5 runs in the 1st. Felix Fermin hits a 2 run double in the outburts. Starter Brian Anderson goes 6 giving up 10 hits and 3 runs but leaves when HBP – but it was enough for the W (7-5). Gas Hornets go on to win 7-4. Scott Brosius homers (4) in the losing effort.
Game #4:  A 2-1 Michigan first inning gets things off to a fast start – but Bill Wegman (W 6-7) and Allen Watson (L 3-10) settle down after that – even with Manhattan tying it in the 3rd. But in the 7th the Mauraders plate the go ahead and winning run on a Vinnie Castilla double. Final 3-2 Michigan.
Game #5:  That result, 3-2 became a popular amount as the Michigan rallies from a 2-1 deficit after 3 plating the tying run in the 7th and the winning run in the 8th off hard luck loser Terry Mulholland (4-12). Scott Sanderson hung in there long enough to get the win (7-4) and Rob Murphy and Bob Wickman (S 23) preserved the 3-2 win.
Series Summary:  Michigan advances their cause for Wild Card hopes (slim) by taking the series 4-1, but it was a closer series than that outcome indicates. Michigan is home next week to in a must win battle against Missouri, Manhattan hosts another struggling team, Valdosta.
Hampton Huskies @ Tennessee Crackers
Series Summary:  The Crackers have a big week & take 4 of 5 from the Huskies.  Three of those four wins were in extra innings.
