Portland Mavericks @ Mexico City Chihuahuas
Series Summary:  Portland takes the series in Mexico City.
Janesville Juggernauts @ Fort Worth Panthers
Series Summary:  Janesville wins the series 3 games to 2.   Potential Player of the week Pudge Rodriguez hit .562 with 3 homers and 2 steals for the series.
Hampton Huskies @ Blarney Drive Bandits
Series Preview:  NL East’s wnd place Huskies take on an underachieving lot in the Bandits.
Game #1:  Jeff Juden pitched 5+ solid innings to improve to 3-0 on the season. Jack McDowell pitched pretty well but two long balls by Klesko and a timely double from Mike Bordick did him in.

HH 3 BDB 4

W – Jeff Juden (3)
L – Jack McDowell (7)
S – Lee Smith (8)

Game #2:  Bobby Jones was outstanding in a 2-hit effort. It would have been a gem but for the 6 walks he allowed. The bottom half of the Huskie order did the damage today collecting 5 RBI.

HH 6 BDB 1

W – Bobby Jones (6)
L – Mike Williams (3)
S – None

Game #3:  On paper the Doug Drabek vs. Tim Belcher heavily leaned Hampton’s way but this was was a nail-biter all the way. The teams pounded out 20 hits but stranded 18 of them. In the end the Bandits couldn’t quite catch the Huskies and fall by a single run. Mickey Tettleton;s 2 run homer was huge.

HH 3 BDB 2

W – Doug Drabek (10)
L – Tim Belcher (14)
S – Doug Jones (14)

Game #4:  Another game where the Huskies had a huge hurler advantage bu Jason Bere struggled all day to throw strikes, piling up 9 walks. The walk-fest kept fueling the Bandit’s 11 hit attack and it all ended up being way too much for visitors. Jody Reed just his 2nd homer of the season, a 3-run job, to start Blarney’s scoring in the 1st.

HH 3 BDB 8

W – David Weathers (2)
L – Jason Bere (6)
S – None

Game #5:  Tied 2 games apiece, the series decider brings Randy Johnson to the bump for Blarney. Tom Gordon has his work cut out for him but battles all day and leaves down just one run in the 8th. Hampton scratches out 1 in the 8th to tie the game and send it to extras. Ricky Henderson singled and stole 2nd to start the bottom of the 10th and Yorkis Perez followed that up with a wild pitch; no outs and a runner on 3rd made it easy for the Bandits to take the final game 3-2.

HH 2 BDB 3

W – Lee Smith (1)
L – Yorkis Perez (2)
S – None

Series Summary:  Blarney takes a close series 3-2.
Flossmoor Flying Squirrels @ Montreal Dreamers
Series Summary:  The Squirrels took the series 3-2
Tennessee Crackers @ Missouri Black Bears
Series Preview:  Missouri was looking to increase its lead in the wildcard standings with a solid Tennessee team coming into town. The Bears knew it would be a hard-fought series.
Game #1:  Game 1 saw another fine pitching performance from Ben McDonald, as he picks up his 9th win with 7 innings of 1-run ball. Bichette and Matt Williams supply the offense, both hitting homers, and the Black Bears take the first game 5-1.

WP: McDonald (9-3)
LP: Rijo (6-5)

Game #2:  Game #2 was a back-and-forth affair, but Missouri manages to pull out another victory in a 5-3 final. Bichette hits another home run. Otis Nixon has 2 hits and an RBI for Tennessee.

WP: Bedrosian (3-2)
LP: Carrasco (2-3)
S: Wetteland (14)

Game #3:  Missouri is feeling pretty confident going into Game 3 having taken the first two of the series. Tennessee jumps right on them with 2 runs in the first off of Kenny Rogers. But, Missouri slowly works its way back and ends up winning 6-4. Bonds and Matt Williams hit homers, while Canseco and Phillips do the same for Tennessee. In the end, the Black Bears pitching holds out a little better.

WP: Zane Smith (8-6)
LP: Jim Abbott (8-4)
S: Wetteland (15)

Game #4:  Tennessee finally breaks through in this one, and ekes out a 3-2 victory by putting one run across in the top of the 9th. A close game throughout. Missouri is hurt when its starter, Mark Portugal, is pulled before he even throws a pitch and is lost for 10 days. A cobbled together bullpen manages its best, but can’t hold off Tennessee. Lance Johnson and Weiss have 3 hits a piece.

WP: Ken Ryan (2-0)
LP: Henke (1-1)
S: Todd Jones (14)

Game #5:  The series finale would prove to be another real squeaker. Missouri holds on to win 2-1. Strong starts from Danny Jackson (Tennessee) and Willie Banks (Missouri), and it was decided in the bullpen. Missouri wins on a walk-off single from Andujar Cedeno.

WP: Henke (2-1)
LP:Rijo (6-5)

Series Summary:  Although it was a 4-1 series win for Missouri, these were two very evenly matched teams, with no blowouts in the series. Missouri strengthened its position on top of the wild-card standings before heading to Division leader SLC next week.
Long Beach Titans @ Winnipeg Goldeyes
Series Preview:  First place Long Beach visits 3rd place Winnipeg but were only 2 games up.
Game #1:  Winnipegs’s Jay Buhner has a massive game going 3 for 4 with a double and two homers and 5 rbis. Smith and Nilsson homered for Long Beach but it wasn’t enough as Winnipeg wins 7-6 on a 8th inning 2 run pinch hit double by Javy Lopez off Mesa. W-Groom(1-2) S-Beck(7) L-Mesa(3-3)
Game #2:  Hamiltons only mistake was allowing a Buhner 2 run homer but he wins it as Justice drives in 2 and Candiotti gives up 3. LBT 3 WGE 2 W-Hamiton(8-3) Candiotti(2-7)
Game #3:  West was great allowing just 1 run as Buhner had the game off.Roper didn’t have it and took his first loss, LBT 6 WGE 1 W-West(7-5) L-Roper(5-1)
Game #4:  Lofton triples and Homers and Buhner after his game off hit another homer! WGE 6 LBT 3 W-Glavine(9-7) S-Beck(8) L-Palacios 5-6
Game #5:  BUHNER again 3 for 5 with a homer and 5 rbis! Winnipeg blows out Long beach 13-2. W-Schilling (7-6) L-Martinez(7-6)
Series Summary:  Winnipeg wins the series 3-2 and cuts Long Beaches lead to 1 game. Buhner was amazing extending his home run streak to 5 games. Buhner goes 9 for 17 .529 with 5 homers and 12 rbis in four games and he has to have a shot at player of the week. Schilling allowed just 2 hits but both were homers, and West was 1 in 7+ for LBT but neither seems good enough for pitcher of the week.
Germantown Grays @ Steel City Sluggers
Series Summary:  Germantown takes 4 of 5.

Series Preview:  Harper Woods heads to Corktown as they try and continue to hold off the defending champions Mexico City.

Series Summary:  The Bootleggers surprise the home crowd and win the series 3-2.
Detroit Stars @ Chicago Demolition

Game #1:  Raul Mondesi has 2 Doubles & 3 RBI’s as the Stars hold off the Demolition.

Final Score: Detroit 8 – Chicago 7

Win: Greg W. Harris 5-5 (6.54)
Loss: Bob Scanlan 3-3 (6.56)

Game #2:  This game had more offense than you can imagine. Both teams put up 10+ Runs, but it was the Stars who prevailed. Derrick Bell was 6 for 6 with a Home Run & 3 RBI’s. Mo Vaughn had 3 Hits in 4 trips with a Home Run & 4 RBI’s. Bo Jackson had a Grand Slam for Chicago.

Final Score: Chicago 10 – Detroit 6

Win: Bobby Ayala 2-1 (2.51)
Loss: Ed Plantenberg 1-1 (5.14)

Game #4:  Jeffery Hammonds & Bo Jackson had 3 RBI’s each, Chicago kept the double digit offense rolling & Pat Kelly had 4 Hits & 2 RBI’s as the Demolition again take care of the Stars.

Final Score: Chicago 12 – Detroit 2

Win: Todd Stottlemyre 5-6 (4.59)
Loss: Brian Williams 1-6 (4.83)

Game #5:  Bobby Witt might have pitched his bets game ever. 9 Innings, 4 Hits, 9 K’s. Randy Velarde had 3 Hits including a solo Home Run.

Final Score: Chicago 5 – Detroit 0

Win: Bobby Witt 5-4 (4.70)
Loss: Chris Nabholz 2-4 (6.16)

Series Summary:  Chicago’s offense leads them to a 3-2 series victory.
Michigan Mauraders @ Valdosta Bombers
Series Preview:  Last place Valdosta hosts Michigan for a 5 game set.
Series Summary:  Michigan takes 3 of 5.
Sugar Land Skeeters @ Manhattan Gas Hornets
Series Preview:  Its last (Manhattan) vs. a powerful 1st (Sugarland) in what used to be a divisional battle and the makeups were reversed. Time for the home team to eat humble pie?
Game #1:  Brett Saberhagen owned this one tossing a CG 3 hit shutout to run his record to 11-2. Fanned 8, walked 1. But it wasn’t an easy win as Andy Ashby was almost as strong going 7.1, 5 hits, 1 run. But in the 9th, Kirk Gibson settled it with a 2 run blast (22) and sealed a 3-0 win.
Game #2:  Not that shutouts are a goal or anything, but the Gas Hornets are racking them up against themselves as Wilson Alvarez (who shares a birthday with the Gas Hornets GM) goes the distance giving up 7 hits, fanning 9 and NO runs. Craig Biggio leads off the game with a homer (5), Lenny Webster drives in 2 and it’s 3-0 before the home team bats. Didn’t much matter with Alvarez hurling bullets. Orlando Merced (6) homered in the 2nd and all the scoring was done. 4-0 Sugarland
Game #3:  Gas Hornets score! Gas Hornets score – and 1st and in the 1st they plate 2 on a Wil Cordero double (he goes 4 for 4 in the game). But the Skeeter double that in the 2nd on Greg Pirkl grand slam (3) and Sugarland never looked back. Eddie Zambrano hits a Baltimore Special in the 5th and Marvin Freeman (9-3) cruises to the win with the final being 8-3 Skeeters. Bad news, Lenny Webster takes one on the arm and will miss at least 12 days of action.
Game #4:  Butch Henry gets the start and is staked to 2-0 lead in the 1st. Ken Griffey hits 2 bombs (42, 43) and gets 5 rbis on his 3 for 5 day. And the Skeeters amass 11 hits and 6 runs. And yet lose as the scrappy Gas Hornets get their scrap on. 3 triples (Alex Cole, Craig Shipley and Luis Polonia) help support Turner Ward and his 4 for 4 day (3 runs). Bob Patterson (5-1) picks up the win pitching a perfect 2 innings at the end. Jpse Mercedes (1-4) takes the loss in a 7-6 Manhattan win.
Game #5:  Skeeters were not happy with the last game and take it out on Terry Mulholland battering him for 8 hits, 1 walk and 8 runs in 2.1 innings. AND they smashed 4 (FOUR) homers in that span. Craig Biggio (6), Ken Griffey 2, (44 and 45 – that’s 2 2 run homer games this series), Bobby Hamelin (12). Griffey gets another 5 rbi game (again 3 for 5), Hamelin drives in 3. Eddie Zambrano didn’t homer but he goes 3 for 5 and drives in 2 – all 3 hits were singles. Steve Ontiveros goes 6 for the win (7-2), gives up 2 hits and 2 UNEARNED runs and Sugarland cruises to 14-4 win while Skeetering down Broadway.
Series Summary:  In the end, it was only sheer luck that allowed the Gas Hornets to avoid the sweep. Watch out for those Skeeters – they are monsters!!
Wausau Timbers @ California Quakes
Series Summary:  California sweeps Wausau to extent their winning streak to an amazing 23-games.
