Winnipeg Goldeyes @ Hampton Huskies
Series Preview:  The NL West leading Winnipeg Goldeyes head east to face the bobbling, powerless but still hanging on to 2nd place in the NL East Hampton Huskies for five games.
Game #1:  Jack McDowell is the story in this game. The guitar-plucking pitcher gives up just two hits in eight innings as the home team cruised to a 7-2 win in the series opener over Winnipeg.
Devon White was the offensive standout for Hampton racking up a single and a double, scoring twice and driving in a pair of runs as the Huskies continued to display incredible warning track power with four doubles in the contest but nothing leaving the park in fair territory.
McDowell fanned seven and walked four in the contest while starting opponent Andy Benes fared not so well. He lasted just an out over four innings and gave up five runs on seven hits with two walks and five Ks.
Goldeyes’ 1st baseman Troy Neel was involved in all of his team’s scoring in the game. He hit into a groundout in the 6th inning to drive in a run for Winnipeg and also scored once after walking in the 2nd inning.
HAMPTON 7 – WINNIPEG 2
Win-McDowell (5-4)
Save-none
Loss-A.Benes (7-3)
HR-none
Game #2:  Hampton’s hideous defence reared its ugly head in Game 2 with the opportunistic Goldeyes capitalizing on four displays of ball-bobbling buffoonery which led to five unearned runs in the Winnipeg 6-3 win.
The Huskies opened the game with a rare display of power in the bottom of the 2nd inning when Eric Young lofted one into the left field stands … and here we thought the only way he could get a ball out of the park was to give one to a cabdriver. The tater gave the Huskies a temporary 1-0 lead.
The Goldeyes scored twice to take the lead 2-1 in the next inning when Young fielded a grounder at 2nd base and then made a throw to first like he was lobbing a bowling ball. The throw eluded 1st baseman Henry (ChiChi) Rodriguez and led to both Winnipeg runs.
Hampton took bad the lead in the bottom of the 5th when Rodriguez crushed a ball way over the centre field wall with two guys aboard to make it 3-2.
The Huskies were not done though … defensively, that is.
Bret Barberie, Bip Roberts and Jay Buhner all scored in the Winnipeg 6th thanks to Young and Eisenreich combining throwing errors on the same play on when a hard grounder skipped off Young’s glove and into right field and Eisenreich’s ensuing throw to try and get Roberts as he raced to 3rd wound up going into the dugout.
Winnipeg added another run in the 8th when Buhner’s chopper back to the pitcher was thrown into the Hampton dugout by reliever Mike Remlinger. Buhner scored two batters later when Kirt Manwaring blooped the ball over Rodriguez’s head and into shallow right field.
Manwaring had two of his team’s six hits in the contest and drove in a run.
WINNIPEG 6 – HAMPTON 3
Win-Roper (3-0)
Save-Veres (9)
Loss-B.Jones (5-5)
HR-HAM: E.Young (3), H.Rodriguez (3)
Game #3:  Orel Hershiser was solid in his first start of the season and Eric Young apologized for his horrid defence in the previous game by hitting a home run for the second day a row as Hampton coasted to another 7-2 win over Winnipeg.
It was Winnipeg’s turn to enjoy some FUBAR defence as their fielders committed three errors in the game which translated to four unearned runs as the two teams sought to hit the MWWL record books for unearned runs in a series.
Jay Buhner lifted his team and the ball out of the park in the 1st inning off Hershiser to give the Goldeyes a 1-0 edge.
The Huskies roared back in the 3rd inning with Young smacking a one-out a solo shot that barely cleared the left field wall and then it was double down time with Mickey Morandini smacking one off the base of the wall in right and then BJ Surhoff slicing the ball down the left field line just over the glove of Luis Lopez which scored Morandini easily and gave Hampton a 2-1 edge. Mike Stanley was up next and reached on an offline throw by Omar Vizquel and then Brian McRae’s speed came into play when he ground out to 2nd but Bret Barberie rushed the throw and pulled Troy Neel off 1st to load the bases. Chris Gomez lofted a ball to right field that allowed Surhoff to score on the sacrifice fly and make it 3-1. Devon White hit a roller to shortstop that he was able to then beat out for an infield hit and scored Stanley to make it 4-1.
Vizquel got one of those runs back in the 5th when he hit a seeing-eye single through the left side of the infield with Manwaring on 3rd base to bring the score to 4-2.
That was as close as the Goldeyes would come though as Hampton scored a run in the 6th on a double by White and two runs in the 7th with McRae driving in one with his 4th triple of the season and then coming in to score on a booted grounder by Neel.
HAMPTON 7 – WINNIPEG 2
Win-Hershiser (2-0)
Save-none
Loss-Candiotti (2-5)
HR-WIN: Buhner (11); HAM: E.Young (4)
Game #4:  The biggest hit in this game was the head-to-head outfield collision between Brian McRae and Eric Young, but otherwise the game was dominated by Hampton starter Jason Bere who allowed just three hits over eight innings as the Huskies won 6-2.
McRae proved to have the harder head since he was only lost for the day while peanut-brittle skulled Young was knocked out for five days after the the two knocked heads chasing Kirt Manwaring’s fly ball. The hit allowed Luis lopez to race home from 2nd. Manwaring subsequently scored one Vizquel’s line drive single to right with two outs.
Young’s replacement in the outfield, Al Martin, was a perfect 1/1 with two walks and an RBI on a his 6th triple of the year in the 6th inning. Domingo Cedeno was 2/3 with an RBI and two runs as well for Hampton.
HAMPTON 6 – WINNIPEG 2
Win-Bere (4-4)
Save-none
Loss-Glavine (7-5)
HR-none
Game #5:  The Huskies sent 13 men to the plate in the 5th inning, scoring nine times as the came from behind to take the final game of the series 10-2 over Curt Schilling and the Goldeyes.
The game was somewhat of an anomaly as not only did Winnipeg outhit Hampton 15-12 in the contest, but also the game featured only one error – a throwing error by Chris Gomez in the 2nd inning that led to two runs and an early 2-0 Winnipeg lead.
Save for a run allowed on a single by McRae in the 2nd inning, Schilling looked to be in pretty good control of the game heading into the 5th. A series of walks in the 3rd and 4th innings should have been a warning sign of the disaster to come.
Schilling went into the inning having allowed one run on two hits and three walks and emerged with nine runs allowed on eight hits and six walks.
Al Martin and Brian McRae each had two hits, a run scored and two RBIs for Hampton.
Kirt Manwaring continued his big series vs the Huskies with three hits in four at bats and an RBI. Omar Vizquel, Jay Buhner and Bret Barberie each had two hits in support for Winnipeg which left 13 men on base in the game.
HAMPTON 10 – WINNIPEG 3
Win-Rhodes (1-0)
Save-none
Loss-Schilling (5-5)
HR-WIN: Barberie (3)
Series Summary:  The defence was as horrible as expected, but the Huskies managed to surprise with three homers in the series. Winnipeg fell prey to some lousy luck with errors and implosions by their starters to drop four of five in the series potentially dropping them into 2nd place behind Long Beach. Hampton meanwhile continues to trail the streaking Germantown Grays.

Series Summary:  Fort Worth takes the series 3 games to 2.

Game #2:  Long Beach hit back (Samuel) to back (Justice) to back (Fielder) to back (Lindeman) HRs in the 1st and went on to a 7-4 win.
