Blarney Drive Bandits @ Winnipeg Goldeyes
Series Preview:  The final Wild card was at stake. But it should be much of a series as Blarney only need to win 1 game to reach .500 on the season and lock up the 2nd Wild Card. Last years champion Winnipeg disappointed all year but if they could sweep all 7 games then they would reach 81-81 and be in the playoffs.
Game #1:  Weathers started for Blaney and he did not have it as Winnipeg hit him for 4 runs as Buhner homered and Glavine was solid and Beck got the save. WPG 6 BDB 3 W-Glavine 10-12 S-Beck 35 L-Weathers (2-3)
Game #2:  Hanson was solid for BDB allowing just 3 runs btu Candiotti was better allowing 1 run in 8 and Beck got his 36 save. WPG 3 BDB 1 W-Candiotti(8-12) S-Beck(36) L-Hanson(15-6)
Game #3:  Winnipeg ace Benes wins his 17th allowing just 3 runs and handing the game to Rojos for the save as Beck was done. WPG 6 BDB 3 W-Benes(17-7) S-Rojas(2) L-Bautista(5-8)
Game #4:  Blarney ace Randy Johnson finally stopped the nightmare and threw a 9 strikeout 5 hitter.Schilling was a solid 2 in 8.1 but just not enough as Murray scored 2 runs. BDB 3 WPG 0 W-Johnson(16-15) L-Schilling(13-12) Blarney clinches!
Game #5:  Glavine got ejected in the 2nd inning for Winnipeg but the Winnipeg pen was great going 8 innings allowing just 2 runs. Inky’s great game for Blarney a triple short of the cycle was not enough. WPG 4 BDB 2 WPG 4 BDB W-Rojas(7-8) S-Beck(37) L-Harris
Game #6:  Candiotti was great again for Winnipeg as the 13 starter lowered his era to 4.14 and improved his record to 9-12. Winnipeg 4 BDB 1 W-Candiotti (9-12) S-Beck 38, L-Weathers (2-4)
Game #7:  The final game of the year and Winnipeg goes with Benes and Blarney sends out Hanson. Both started left with the game tied 2-2. Lofton plays hero in the 9th as his hit gives Winnipeg the walk off win. W-Rojas(8-8) L-Dipoto (5-3)
Series Summary:  Wow Winnipeg almost does the impossible winning 6 of 7 ending with 80 wins, but Blarney goes to the playoffs with a 81-81 record. The big unit was the hero could he shock the world in the playoffs. After a disappointing season by Winnipegs pitchers they almost preformed a miracle at the end.
Pitcher of the Week:Tom Candiotti 2-0 2 runs in 16 innings just 12 hits and 4 walks vs 8 strikeout. Other is Randy Johnson for BDB with a 4 walk 5 hit 9 strikeout win.
Germantown Grays @ Steel City Sluggers
Series Summary:  Steel City drops 5 of 7 to close out the season and finish 67-95. At least we avoid losing 100; finishing with the #7 draft slot will give us our best draft position in many years. Unfortunately after A-Rod there are a bunch of good but not great guys. C’est la vie.

California Quakes @ Portland Mavericks
Series Preview:  League leading California Quacks, (I KID I KID), the Quakes, bring their 119-38 record to Portland. Portland, while not being mathematically eliminated yet, sit 5 losses in back of Flossmoor, and 2 losses back of the Fort Worth Panthers. The Panthers visit last place Corktown, while Portland faces the leagues best team. Floosmoor visits 49-105 Janesville.

So yeah, it isn’t over for Portland yet, but the fat lady is warming up her vocals in the background.

Game #1:  Portland’s Sele’s grade drops 5 points for being itchy. Not a good start for Portland and not a pitch thrown. I mean he has the flu… that’s it, he has the flu. Brian Williams is on the mound for California for his first start of the year.
Quakes rattle Sele in the first for two runs, but Portland answers back with one run in the bottom half.
In the bottom of the 2nd, Phil Plantier blast a 3 run dinner to give Portland the 4-2 lead.
Runs by the Quakes in the 3rd and 4th innings tie things up. Portland takes the lead again in the 5th with FOUR huge runs after a 2-out error by the Quakes.
Quakes never get close from there, as Portland gets the 6-run win.
POR 12 CAL 6
Game #2:  The 16-6 Pete Harnish on the mound for California. Pitching duel until the 4th when Phil Plantier blasts a three run shot (32) to open up the scoring. Meanwhile, Rich Hill is pitching a gem for Portland, getting the complete game shutout to stick a fork in his season.
POR 4 CAL 0
Game #3:  Quakes strike first in the 3rd inning with one run, but another big 3-run HR, this time by Will Clark, put’s Portland up. In the third, Quakes get one run and try to add another, but Mike Stanley is thrown out at the plate. Pavlik then chucks up a wild pitch for Portland allowing California to tie it up 3 all. Mav’s take the lead on a Zeile single in the 6th, and then another single by Johnson gives them a two-run lead.
Quakes try to get one back in the 8th, but Molitor gets thrown out at the plate for the 3rd out!
The try again in the 9th down two, getting runners on first and third with no outs. Phillips flies out to center, and then Van Slyke walks to load the bases. Olerud then singles scoring one, and strangely, the speedy Cuyler stops at third. Perranoski2 showing confidence in his offense. Stanley strikes out. The .327 hitting Molitor steps into the box with bases loaded, two outs as the fat lady yells ‘can we just get this over with!’
Molitor say ‘yes we can’ with a huge two-run single that crushes the Mavericks’s thundering hearts.
Brian Harvey and his 35 saves and .80 ERA steps to the mound for the Quakes in the 9th. Knoblauch walks, and the crowd buzzes. Blauser hits and runs and moves Knoblauch to second. Portland MVP Rick Wilkins steps in vs Harvey, .330 avg and 34 home-runs. Could he? Would he?
Nope. A weak fly out.
Will Clark, the team’s captain is next to test Harvey. Could he? Would he? NO! Clark takes a third strike that looked a foot outside. He steps a cross the plate, not saying a word, draws a line in the dirt where he thought the pitch was, drops the bat and walks away with a stare.
Game #4:  Quakes really start rocking in game 4, scoring 4 runs in the 4th to jump to the 5-0 lead, as Portland’s Steve Avery looks shaken. Portland doesn’t given in though, fighting tooth and nail with two runs in the 4th, and 1 in the 5th, and FOUR big runs in the 6th inning. Portland with the 7-5 lead in the 8th.
A double RBI by the Phillips brings the Quakes within one run, and then Van Slyke ties it up.
In the bottom of the 8th, Lance Johnson triples to lead it off as Portland fans go wild with excitement. Knoblauch then doubles Johnson in to give Portland the lead. Blauser then doubles Harvey (not his run) to give Portland the 2-run lead with no outs. Harvey shuts down the Mavs thereafter, but Portland holds on for the 9-7 win.
POR 9 CAL 7
Game #5:  Portland jumps out in the first with 2 runs, but Williams settles down. Portland still with a 2-0 lead after 5. Quakes tie it up in the 7th though. Harvey comes on the bottom of the 8th for California. ERA currently at .78. Hervey shuts Portland down through 9. Extras!
In the bottom of the 10th, Stocker singles of Harvey. Wilkins steps up… and grounds out. On to 11.
Harvey rubs his shoulder has he steps to the mound for his FOURTH inning in relief. Harvey so far has given up just 32 hits in 72 innings. 3 of just 6 earned runs have been off homers. Harvey bucks up and completes his 4th inning. On to 12.
Harvey once again crawls to the mound in the 12th, and once again, sets Portland down.
In the 13th, Canseco stirs California’s hope with a 1-out double, but the Quakes can’t get a run.
Yep, Harvey still, arm in a sling. In the bottom of the 13th, the .390 hitting Kevin Stocker (yes you read that right) comes to the plate… but hits a long fly ball to center. Nothing going for Portland. ON TO 14!
A hit and run by Frazier moves Sabo to third with 1-out for the Quakes. Womack steps to the plate… IT’S A SQUEEZE!!! Womack gets the bunt down, but right to Cox who throws Sabo out at the plate!!! R U KIDDING ME? Portland fans, a grand total of 0 who are sober, dance in that stands. Still work to be done though, two outs runners on first and second, and .355 hitting John Olerud at the plate. Cox decides to pitch around him… but Olerud steps out slaps a base hit to left scoring Frazier! Jose Canseco then blast a two-run double given the Quakes a commanding 5-2 lead. Steinbach then singles in Canseco as the wheels really come off for Portland, as half of the fans head for the exits to find nearby bars, and the rest grab their heads in disbelief. Steinbach then tries to steal second, and Wilkins not only throws him out, but Knoblauch tags him out with a body slam that clears the benches. Ah yes, Portland, misty night in October… baseball… strange things afoot at the circle K.
In the 14th, Harvey finally heads for the ER, giving way to Duane Ward and his 1.17 ERA. Ward shuts Portland down for the hard fought Quake win.
CAL 6 POR 2
Series Summary:  What an amazing way to finish the season! Portland poked the nest of California, and despite getting the 3-2 series win, the playoff teams will have to deal with the swarm. The Quakes are buzzing. The Quakes finish the season an amazing 121-41!
Portland finishes 95-59, but put up a proud fight in the last month, after facing some of the leagues best down the stretch. Best of luck to the playoff teams!
Michigan Marauders @ Sugar Land Skeeters
Series Preview:  Sugar Land is still in the hunt for a division title and needs a strong series against division rival Michigan.
Game #1:  Saberhagen pitches eight shutout innings and Daulton smacks a 2-run homer as Sugar Land wins, 5-0.
Game #2:  Ripken’s 2-run HR in the 7th (the second hit for the Marauder’s off Alvarez) gives Michigan a 2-1 lead, but Sugar land strikes back with two in the 7th and three in the eighth for a 6-3 win. Alvarez (14-7) gets the win.
Game #3:  Michigan and Sugar Land each get two in the first. Michigan gets three in the third but Sugar Land gets four, and ends up with a 12-8 win. Griffey (4-4, 4 R) gets HR number 37 and RBIs 128 and 129. Allou has 4 RBI on two doubles.
Game #4:  Michigan scores first but an all-around offensive assault for Sugar Land nets a 13-2 win. Staton hits a pinch-hit grand slam. Greene pitches 6 strong innings.
Game #5:  Mercker starts as Sabes is tired. Michigan has leads of 2-0 and 3-1 but can’t hold the furious Skeeter offense at bay. White has 3 hits and 3 RBI and a HR (10). Bell also hits his 10th HR.
Game #6:  Alvarez (15-7) allows 1 hit and no runs over 8 IP and the Skeeters’ only run is unearned after a Gaetti error. 1-0 SLS.
Game #7:  Saberhagen starts so Langston can be ready for the first playoff game but doesn’t last as Michigan takes an early 4-0 lead with all runs in the third. Unfortunately, Sugar Land gets six in the frame and Michigan never scores again. Langston gets his 20th win with four shutout innings in relief and the final is 11-4. Sugar Land gets five homers including Griffey’s 38th. Pagliarulo has 4 RBI.

The runner’s going … grounded to CIANFROCCO at third … he takes the high hop
his only play is at first … and he fires it right by SORRENTO … DESHIELDS scores easily
JOYNER running hard … he’ll try to score … he’ll make it … tie game!
and MCGRIFF takes second on the play BOOTLEGGERS 3, PANTHERS 3 And the PANTHERS have tied this game! … just listen to that crowd!”
Gary Sheffield and Dave Winfield would follow with back to back doubles to put Ft. Worth in the lead for good.
Ft. Worth wins 5-4
Game #4:  Kevin Brown struggled in this one, but thanks to another big inning survived long enough to get his 21st victory. The Panthers got 7 singles and 1 double in the 4th scoring 8 runs and they could have had more if not for an inning ending double play with the bases loaded.

Ft. Worth wins 8-5

Game #5:  Ramon Martinez and two relievers befuddled the batters of Ft. Worth while Albert Belle’s 2 run homer in the 3rd – his 35th – proved to be the difference in the game.

With the final out in the bottom of the 14th the Panther’s began celebrating https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_i3ZcC2ozw

Game #7:  Another come from behind victory for the Panthers who came from behind in every win of this series except for game 6 where they shutout the Bootleggers. The come from behind win and big scoring inning were complete when Fred McGriff stepped up with two runners on, ““MCGRIFF gives it a ride … BELLE back for it … I think it might go out … yes it does! it’s long gone! … a three-run shot to deep right DOPSON served up some cannon fodder that time … Fred trots around the bases he loves a trip downtown … he’s greeted at home plate … congratulations all around DOPSON is giving himself a lecture. So MCGRIFF hits a three-run shot … his 32nd home run … finally … the streak ends and the PANTHERS take the lead from the BOOTLEGGERS! … they now lead 5-3 listen to that crowd! … and MCGRIFF now with 136 runs batted in”

Panthers win 6-3

Series Summary: Ft. Worth closed out the 1993 regular season by winning 5 of 7 against Corktown.

He also stole 11 bases. Al Martin hit 18 homers and had 12 stolen bases. Kevin Brown led the starters going 21-9 3.07 and the Panthers always seemed to win whenever reliever Mike Jackson got into the game as he went 7-0 1.88 with 14 saves.
