Steel City Sluggers @ Manhattan Gas Hornets
Series Preview:  Couple of teams who were good and now aren’t – and going nowhere.
Game #1:  Dave Stewart 2 hitter is the story in game as Manhattan takes opener 4-0. Mark Grace gets both hits. Dave Magadan 2 hits, 2 rbis.
Game #2:  Sluggers get 2 in 1st and 1 in the 2nd but Hipolito Pichardo settles in. Tim Raines (12) homers in 2nd. But then the Gas Hornets begin to chip away and score singles runs in the 5th, 6th, and 7th. And then get the game winner in the 9th and give the home crowd a 4-3 win. Mark Davis takes the loss (0-1).
Game #3:  Doug Brocail and Orel Hershiser battle in this one. Gas Hornets get on the board 1st in the 3rd and Ryan Sandberg’s SF ties it in the 4th. Then Dave Hollins cracks a solo shot (9) in the 7th to get the Sluggers up 2-1. Then with 2 outs and 2 on in the 7th, Hershiser smacks a 2 run double (his 2nd hit of the game) and the Gas Hornets take the lead and Hershiser makes it stick.
Game #4:  After a day off Steel City decides it’s their time. Even after falling behind 1-0 in the 1st, they score 3 times in the 5th including a solo homer (9) from Sean Berry, a SF from Tim Raines and Greg Swindell’s rbi single. Then in the 9th Lenny Webster’s SF makes it 4-1 Steel City. But not so fast … Bottom of the 9th Luis Polonia drives in 1 (2 for the game) and Tino Martinez’s PH bases loaded single ties it up. Mike Stanton keeps his head down after the blown save. But no so fast (again) … Top of the 11th, Greg Harris in his 4th inning of relief, finds some control issues and then he makes a throwing error and allows 2 unearned runs. Mark Davis keeps the Gas Hornets scoreless in the bottom half of the 11th and the Sluggers get their 1st win of the series, 6-4. Davis the win. Harris the loss.
Game #5:  Manhattan commits a few errors in the 1st and the Sluggers take advantage and score 5 times (all unearned). Jaime Navarro is able to hold off the Hornets to win the game. Joe Girardi drives in 2 with a double. Sean Berry homers (10) in the 8th to pour it on and Steel City takes the finale 7-3.
Series Summary:  Gas Hornets manage a 3-2 series win and with these teams playing each other its competitive. Next week the Sluggers will host a real team – Missouri, while the Gas Hornets head to Michigan for another round of the 3rd/4th place challenge.
Sugar Land Skeeters @ Michigan Marauders
Series Preview:  Second place Sugar Land comes to Michigan to take on the Marauders. The Skeeters look to be in line for a wild card spot.
Game #1:  Sugar Land 11 Michigan 1
Mark Langston pitches a strong 6.1 innings against his former team. Jim Deshaies takes the loss. Ken Griffey hits 2 homers and has RBIs to lead the Skeeters to the victory. Langston goes to 14-3. Darren Daulton tacks on a homer for Sugar Land.

The Marauders tie up the series. Tanana throws 8 innings and gives up 1 run. Don Slaught knocks in 3 runs.
Game #3:  Michigan 8 Sugar Land 4
Hoiles, Brett, Burnitz, and Devereaux hit homers for Michigan. Scott Sanderson notches the win. Saberhagen loses his 3rd game. Griffey and Merced hit homers for the Skeeters.
Game #4:  Sugar Land 7 Michigan 6
Devon White with a tie breaking homer, and also has a triple as he knocks in 3 runs to lead the way for the Skeeters. Ripken hits a homer for Michigan. Larry Andersen with the win in relief.
Game #5:  Sugar Land 7 Michigan 5
Danny Jackson wins his 11th game for the Skeeters. Griffey and Daulton hit homers. It’s Griffey’s 30th homer. Gaetti hits a homer for the Marauders.
Game #6:  Michigan 9 Sugar Land 4
Langston drops to 14-4. Hoiles hits his 24th homer. Gaetti and Ripken add homers. Gaetti and Ripken each have 3 RBIs. Jim Deshaies wins his 6th game.
Game #7:  With the series tied 3 to 3, Sugar Land wins game 6 easily.
Sugar Land 7 Michigan 3

Winnipeg Goldeyes @ Germantown Grays
Series Preview:  Germantown is in the midst of a long home stand. They host The Winnipeg Goldeyes for a 7 game set.
Game #1:  Grays start off the scoring with a 2-run Hemond shot in the second. PH McGwire ties it with his own 2-run shot in the 6th followed by a Vizquel RBI single. The Grays come right back in the bottom half, Alomar bangs a leadoff single and Thomas brings him all the way around with a double. One out later Litton bangs the wall for a double chasing Glavine and producing the go ahead run, 4-3. Later in the inning McGwire muff a throw for the insurance run. Goldeyes Manwaring 2-3. Grays Alomar 2-4 R, Thomas 2-2 R RBI 2W, and Litton 2-3 R RBI 2b. Aguilera, Miranda, and Fetters pitched 2.1 innings of scoreless relief setting up Montgomery’s 35th save. Germantown 6-3.
Game #2:  Alomar breaks up the DOUBLE NO-HITTER in the bottom of the 7th with a no out single. MacFarlane answers one out later with an RBI double. Grays give up Appier’s NO-HITTER for a PH after Candiotti walks two batters in the 8th. PH Horn steps in, Goldeyes intentionally walk him to fill the bases with one out and pull Candiotti. Novoa the reliefer then walks in the insurance run. Grays Appier 8IP 0R 0H 2W 6K. Montgomery save 36. Germantown 3-0.
Game #3:  Goldeyes plate one in the 1st on a Lofton single and Buhner 2-out double. Grays waste no time getting it back as Curtis bangs one off the wall advances to third on a balk and Vizquel reaches an infield grounder but cannot make a play. Goldeyes retake lead in 5th on leadoff doubles by Vizquel and Manwaring. Goldeyes Lofton 2-4 R Sb. Benes 7IP 1R 5H 1W 4K. Beck 2 shutout innings and his 27th save. Grays Curtis 2-3 R 2-2b. Smoltz 5IP 2R 4H 1W 3K. Castillo, Hernandez, Aguilera and Assenmacher 4 innings of scoreless relief. Winnipeg 2-1.
Game #4:  Gagne’s 3-run homer in the 2nd give the Grays a comfortable lead. Goldeyes get a crooked number in the 6th to make it interesting, 4-2. But Gagne bloops an RBI single in the bottom half. Goldeyes Lofton 2-4 R and Roberts 2-4 R. Grays MacFarlane 2-4 2R 2RBI 2b HR, Sanders 2-4 2R 2b, and Gagne 2-4 R 4RBI HR. Miranda 6IP 0ER 6H 1W 7K. Fetters, Assenmacher, and Mulholland pitched 3 innings of scoreless relief. Germantown 7-2.
Game #5:  Grays Liriano leads off with a double in the 1st and Thomas bangs an RBI single. Goldeyes Jones ties the game in the 3rd with a triple. PH Segui breaks the game open with a 3-run homer in the 6th. But Horn retorts with a 3-run shot in the 7th. In the 9th with the score 4-4 Goldeyes Rod Beck Grade 20 goes head to head with Grays Montgomery Grade 20. With 2-out in the 10th Curtis walks, McRae singles to make it fist and second. Caminiti bangs an RBI single for the win. Goldeyes Kile 6IP 2R 5H 2W 3K. Grays Alomar 2-5 2b and Caminiti 2-2 R RBI 2b IBB. Finley 5IP 1R 2H 2W 4K. Hernandez, Fetters, and Montgomery cloe out the game with 3.1 scoreless innings. Grays 5-4 10 innings.
Game #6:  Thomas starts off the scoring with a solo shot in the 1st, Grays 1-0. Goldeyes finally get to Appier on a 2-run 2-out double by Ventura in the 5th. Sanders takes Appier off the hook with a solo shot in the 6th. Grays leave Hernandez in too long as Buhner crushes a 2-run homer in the 8th. Goldeyes Glavine 7.1IP 2R 9H 1W 3K. Grays Sanders 3-4 R RBI HR and Mack 2-3 2b. Appier 5IP 2R 5H 4W 4K. Winnipeg 4-2.
Game #7:  Gagne bangs a single with two on to open the scoring in the 2nd. With 1-out and bases loaded in the 3rd MacFarlane lifts a sac fly, 2-0. Sanders bangs a solo shot in the 4th for a comfortable lead. Goldeyes plate two in the 5th, 3-2. In the bottom half Curtis singles, Alomar doubles and Thomas bangs a 2-run double to chase Candiotti. Goldeyes won’t go away. Vizquel doubles and Manwaring gets an RBI single in the 6th, 6-3. Goldeyes Shaw and Rojas provided 3 innings of scoreless relief. Grays Alomar 2-4 R 2-2b. Aguilera and Montgomery finished the game for hold 10and save 37.
Series Summary:  Grays take the series 5 games to 2. Pitching honors go to Grays Appier 13IP 2R 5H 6W 10K. Hitting to Grays Alomar 10-26 4R RBI 4-2b 3W 2Sb.
Missouri Black Bears @ Valdosta Bombers
Series Preview:  1st place Missouri pays a visit to the last place Bombers in Valdosta.
Game #1:  Missouri 9-0. Kenny Rogers tossed 8 innings of shutout ball and Matt Williams hit a pair of HR’s as the Black Bears win.
Game #2:  Missouri 8-5. John Franco was soooo bad today. He blew the save by allowing 4 straight HR’s in Charlie Brown-like fashion. Bonds and Piazza both had 2 HR’s in the contest.
Game #3:  Missouri 3-1. Scott Fletcher hit a big 3-run HR that proved to be the game winner. Steven Foster collected his 10th save for game winning John Burkett (11-5).
Game #4:  Valdosta 7-6. Bombers blew another lead but were saved when light hitting Ricky Gutierrez hit a walk off HR.
Game #5:  Missouri 11-3. Mark Portugal tossed 6 shutout innings for his 14th victory.
Game #6:  Missouri 4-1. Kenny Rogers wins again and was backed up by back to back HR’s from Scott Fletcher and Barry Bonds in the 1st off of loser Pat Hentgen (6-12).
Game #7:  Valdosta 6-3. A rare win for Charlie Hough (4-14) as he was helped by a big 3-run shot by Steve Finley in the 7th. Carl Willis picked up his 13th save.
Series Summary:  Black Bears take 5 of 7 to stay in 1st. Bombers continue to vie for the worst record in the league.
