Germantown Grays @ Manhattan Gas Hornets
Series Preview:  Germantown brings their powerhouse team to Manhattan to face a very poor team. However, other than the game 1 blowout it was a very tough fought and close series (in spite of the results). AND NO-HITTER alert!
Game #1:  Gas Hornets take a 2-0 lead in the 2nd on 2 run Tino Martinez homer (9), but the the Grays take command. Roberto Alomar cracks a 3 run shot (14), Reggie Sanders smacks the 2 run homer (14) and the Grays smash out 13 hits enroute to a 9-3 win.
GER 9-13-0 WP Terry Mulholland (7-5)
MGH 3- 7-1 LP Brian Bohanan (2-6)
Game #2:  Series begins to heat up. Mike Macfarlane (Spanky) gets an rbi single in the 3rd. Ron Darling is hanging tough though but gives up another rbi single in the 5th, this time to Greg Gagne. John Smoltz is pitching brilliantly but in the 8th he gives up an rbi single to promising prospect Matt Stairs. Jeff Montgomery is then summoned and he closes down Manhattan for a 5 out save as Germantown takes game 2.
GER 2-9-0 WP Smolt (10-9) S Montgomery (31)
MGH 1-6-0 LP Darling (5-7)
Game #3:  Anybody notice that Kevin Appier is 13-1? And near impossible to beat. Well the Gas Hornets are taking direct aim in this game to get Appier his 2nd loss. And Dave Stewart is elected to go up against him and he gives it a great performance. In the 4th he gives up his 1st hit, a single to Frank Thomas. Mike Macfarlane then walks and Reggie Sanders follows with an rbi single. BUT Stewart holds them to the 1 run. And he keeps it that through 8. Then in the 9th, with score still 1-0 Grays, Brian McRae reaches on an error by Felix Fermin. Greg Gagne walks and Caminit singles to LF scoring McRae, Gagne to 3rd. Appier to plate, and he bats and whiffs. Stewart is pulled and Brian Anderson comes in. Chad Curtis greats him with a 2 run double for a 4-0 Germantown lead. The next batter is retired to so it’s on to the bottom of the 9th.
Appier still on the mound. He gets John Vanderwal to whiff, Luis Alicea to pop out and the fans Matt Stairs to end the game.
BUT – those three outs preserved the NO-HITTER he was working on. So in spite of valiant attempts, Manhattan can’t beat Appier – and Appier knew we were coming so he NO-HITS us!! He gave up 3 walks with the 30 batters he faced.

GER 4-7-0 WP Appier (14-1) – NO-HITTER
MGH 0-0-1 LP Stewart (4-6)
Game #4:  After a day of rest, the Gas Hornets finally get a hit when Chad Kreuter singles in the 1st then he scores when Kevin Reimer follows with a double. Kreuter then launches a 2 run homer (9) in the 4th. Germantown takes advantage of the lousy Manhattan defense (3 errors in the game) and score 2 runs in the 5th – rbis from Frank Thomas (double and 2 hits) and Mike MacFarlane (Spanky) who doubled right after Thomas for the 2nd run.
Gas Hornets Hipolito Pichardo however was going strong. He shrugs off the 2 unearned runs and stays to the end (don’t trust the bullpen) and keeps the Grays scoreless the rest of the way as Manhattan gets the surprising win, 3-2.
GER 2-10-0 LP Miranda (6-3)
MGH 3- 5-3 WP Pichardo (3-9)
Game #5:  Series finale and it looks like Chuck Finley wants to join the Kevin Appier no-hitter club. Orel Hershiser is looking like that as well as he goes through the 1st three innings giving up no hits, bu then Reggie Sanders connects for a solo shot (15) and the first hit of the game! Finley presses on.
Bottom of the 7th, he gives up his first (and only) hit when Dave Martinez touches one off (2) to tie the game, 1-1. Hershiser stays in, we like his bat, but in the 8th he gives up rbi singles to Sanders and Frank Thomas. Finley gives way to Jeff Montgomery in the 8th and he gets a 6 out save as Germantown wins 3-1. The Martinez homer was the only hit for the Gas Hornets – which means in 2 games of this series the Gas Hornets could only manage 1 hit!
Series Summary:  Not surprising outcome, 4-1 Grays. But the games (except #1 were close) and Kevin Appier continues his dominance and adds to it with a NO-HITTER.
Steel City Sluggers @ Long Beach Titans
Series Summary:  In a series between the 2 worst teams in the NL West, Long Beach wins 5 of 7. 3 games ended with walk-off HRs by Justice (2) and Smith.
Mexico City Chihuahuas @ Portland Mavericks
Series Preview:  AL West leading Mexico City Chihuahuas visit Portland Mavericks. Mexico City has an 8 game lead over the Flossmoor Flying Squirrels. Meanwhile, the Mavs are fighting for a AL wildcard spot, currently 4.5 up on Fort Worth Panthers.
Game #1:  Mex 5 Port 2
Game #2:  Port 2 Mex 1
Game #3:  Mex 5 Port 3
Game #4:  Pavlik takes a no-hitter into the 9th inning for Portland before Jefferies breaks it with a single.
Port 6 Mex 0
Game #5:  Mex 9 Port 3
Game #6:  Port 4 Mex 3
Game #7:  Port 8 Mex 0
