Series Preview: | California visits Ft. Worth to start the 1993 season. The Quakes project to be the AL’s team in the World Series while the Panther will probably have to fight for a wild card spot. |
Game #1: | Willie McGee started the 1993 season off right for the Panthers by beating out an infield single in the bottom of the first. He would later score the first run on an error by shortstop John Valentin. RBI singles by Gary Sheffield and Joe Orsulak completed the scoring as Ft. Worth led 3-0 after the first inning. Fred McGriff would hit a solo home run in the 5th. Panther starter Kevin Brown was hoping for an opening day complete game, but allowing the Quakes to get within 3 runs in the 8th ended that quest. The Panthers pen put out the fire and Ft. Worth took game one.

Game #2: | Singles by John Valentin and Paul Molitor give California its first lead of the season after three innings in game 2. However, for the 2nd day in a row Fred McGriff hits a homer – tying the game at 2 in the bottom of the 4th, “*He lets one go … MCGRIFF goes out and gets it … long ball … down the left field line curving … curving … is it or isn’t it? … the ump signals … home run! an opposite field two-run blow. So MCGRIFF has his 2nd homer of the season … an oppo taco” The Panther’s would go ahead in the 5th on a solo home run by Wally Joyner, but Ft. Worth closer, Steve Bedrosian blows his first save of the year with 2 outs in the 9th on a double by Tony Phillips. Second Baseman, Delino DeShields wins the game in the bottom of the 9th with a two-out RBI double.FINAL SCORE: PANTHERS 4, QUAKES 3 |
Game #3: | Pitching was strong for both clubs. The only run coming on a RBI-single by Roberto Kelly as the Panthers win their 3rd straight to open the season.

Game #4: | After surprisingly starting the season 0-3 California came out strong in game 4 pounding out 15 hits routing the Panthers.

Game #5: | Game 4 looked like a pitching duel compared to game 5. The Quakes destroyed the Panthers with a 22-hit attack scoring 12 runs the final 3 innings.

Game #6: | With both starting pitchers locked into a pitcher’s duel the two teams ended 9 innings tied at 1. Then Fred McGriff stepped to the plate with a runner on and no outs in the bottom of the 10th, “Now he throws to first … and JOYNER gets back … not his best move now GORDON is back on the rubber … the pitch … and a long drive to right … it’s all over! he buried it! … he buried it! … a two-run shot … A walk-off win for the Panthers!”

Game #7: | Fred McGriff put the icing on the cake for the 1993 opening series with 3 homers and 6 RBI’s in the finale. Donovan Osborne pitches a complete game although he tires in the 9th allowing 3 home runs, but he had 9 run cushion starting the inning so there was no need for concern.

Game #5: | Steve Trachsel gives up 1 hit through 9 innings for his Bootleggers debut. The rookie was one bright spot for Corktown in week 1. Scott Erickson went down with an injury in the 2nd and the Wings had to piece together innings the reminder of the game.

Game #1: | The Stars score 2 in the top of the first and it’ll be all they need as they cruise to a first game win 3-0. Both pitchers go the distance but Eldred is on the losing end of this one! |
Game #2: | The Juggernauts bats wake up as they take game two 9-4. Danny Tartabull smashes two home runs in the winning effort, and Plunk gets a rare three inning save for his first of the season. |
Game #3: | This time it’s the Stars’ turn to bat, as they rap out 14 hits in a winning effort, taking game three 9-0 for the 2nd shutout of the series. Detroit gets 4 homers from 4 different players. |
Game #4: | The first extra inning affair, Plunk blows his first save opportunity of the season and Detroit takes game four 7-5. |
Game #5: | A slug fest for the Juggernauts, they make up for lost time by getting 19 hits and winning game five walking away 16-3. Cormier goes the distance in his first win of the season, and Danny Tartabull again raps out two homers for a hot start of the season. |
Game #6: | A much more tame affair this time, as the Stars come through and guarantee a series win taking game six 4-1. Eldred takes the tough loss as his run support so far is nil, while Leiter goes to 2-0 on the young season. |
Game #7: | Despite being outhit 18-12 by the Stars, Janesville wins the last game of the series 7-4. Ruffin gets the win for the Juggernauts, going 2-0 in the series. |
