Game #6:  Melido Perez had his second strong game of the series as he threw a complete game 4 hitter in the Long Beach 2-1 win. He had a shutout until Kirt Manwaring led off the 9th with a HR. Dwight Smith had 3 hits to lead the Titans offense.
Game #7:  Ed Sprague hit a grand slam as Long Beach’s offense came alive in the 8-2 win. He ended up 3-4 with 5 RBI. Jose Mesa pitched into the 9th to pick up his first win of the season.
Series Summary:  In a rematch from last years playoffs, Long Beach took 5 of the 7 games.
Mexico City Chihuahuas @ Detroit Stars
Series Summary:  The Chihuahuas come out ankle biting & the Stars feel the pain as the Chihuahuas take all 7 games.
Janesville Juggernauts @ Stockton Wings
Series Preview:  Janesville comes to Stockton for 5 games

Stockton’s home opener sees them raise the 1992 American League Pennant in a pregame ceremony

Game #1:  STO 9 – JJG 1

WP: Drabek
LP: Armstrong

HR: STO–Hrbek, Thompson, Grissom

Janesville got the scoring started, but got swamped, in part, by Stockton’s four-run 4th inning. Marquis Grissom had two RBI for Stockton.

Game #2:  STO 6 – JJG 0

WP: Mussina (CG)
LP: Hammond

HR: STO–Larkin

Mussina was dominant and ran with a bi early lead. Barry Larkin and Darren Lewis had all the RBI, with three apiece.

Game #3:  STO 7 – JJG 6

WP: Rueter
LP: Leibrandt
SV: Melendez

HR: STO–L. Walker

STO jumped out to a 7-0 lead but had to hold on with the winning runs on in the 9th when the bullpen sprung a leak in the 8th and 9th innings.

Game #4:  JJG 7 – STO 2

WP: Eldred (CG)
LP: Erickson

HR: STO–Destrade

JJG scored four in the 1st inning and turned it over to Cal Eldred, whose only blemish was an Orestes Destrade teo-run HR. Bobby Bonilla and B.J. Surhoff had three hits each and Mark Lemke had two RBI for JJG.

Game #5:  STO 4 – JJG 0

WP: Astacio (CG)
LP: Ruffin

HR: none

Pedro Astacio went all the way and struck out 11.

Series Summary:  Stockton takes the series 4 games to 1
Michigan Marauders @ Blarney Drive Bandits
Series Preview:  Two Michigan teams sqaure off for a 5-game set.
Game #1:  DeShaies and Wells are near mirror images allowing 4 runs over 6 innings. Bandits up 4-2 heading into the 6th where the Marauders put the pedal down and score 2-1-1-1 to leave the opening day fans disappointed. Chris Hoiles goes off on a 3-4 2 RBI 1 Double 2 Homer day. Hoiles would be known as the “Der Kommisier of Klout” be the end of the series.

MM 7 BDB 5

W – DeShaies (1)
L – Lilliquist (1)
S – Henneman (3)

Game #2:  Guzman pitches well enough for the win but Michigan’s pen was pillaged for 7 runs over the last 2 innings. Don “On” Slaught drills a pinch-hit 2 run dinger to send Black to the showers.

MM 3 BDB 11

W – Jones (1)
L – Guzman (1)
S – None

Game #3:  Each team plated single runs multiple times until the bottom of the 6th. With the score 3-2 in favor of the Marauders, Tanana hangs a curve to Bordick with the bases juiced and Mike deposited into the 2nd row, Holy Cow! The slam sucked the wind out the Michigan dugout. Eddie Murray 4-4 3r 2rbi double 2 HRs.

MM 4 BDB 7

W – Gibson (2)
L – Tanana (1)
S – Lilliquist (1)

Game #4:  The Big Unit goes the distance on 4 hits and kept the ball in the park. Mike Morgan tosses 6 innings of 3 run ball. Bandits scattered 10 hits, threatened often, and pulled out a squeaker.

MM 2 BDB 3

W – Johnson (2)
L – Morgan (2)
S – None

Game #5:  Rafael Palmeiro crushes a 2-run shot in the 1st. Rickey Henderson matches that in the 5th. Hoiles (7-14 3 doubles and 3 HRs) enters the game in the 8th as a pinch-hitter. Randy Myers decides gas would be a good way to start the at bat, to bad Chris agreed, and Hoiles drills home run #4 for the series. Shoulda freaking walked him.

MM 3 BDB 3

W – Kamieniecki (1)
L – Myers (1)
S – Henneman (5)

Series Summary:  Bandits take the series 3-2 and are happy to see the Marauders pack up their rocket launchers.
Germantown Grays @ Steel City Sluggers
Series Summary:  As expected, Germantown puts a beat-down on Steel City, taking 5-7 — including an 18-2 drubbing in the 6th game.
Valdosta Bombers @ Sugar Land Skeeters
Series Preview:  Valdosta visits division rival Sugar Land.
Game #1:  Sugar Land gets off to a 2-0 lead and holds on for a 2-1 win. Tapani (1-0) over Moore (1-1), McElroy with a rare LOOGY save.
Game #2:  Close game until Valdosta gets a 2-spot in the 8th. Karros 2-run shot is the big offense for the Bombers. Rookie Steve Karsay (0-1) pitches well but Jamie Moyer (2-0) is too tough and Roger Mason retires all 8 batters to get it to closer Willis who gets his 3rd save in a 5-2 win.
Game #3:  Wilson Alvarez is injured (7 days) in warm-ups and Joel Johnston ends up “starting” the game and is just ok. Valdosta gets four doubles in its nine hits and wins 3-1. Brantley(2-0) gets the win and Willis yet another save (4).
Game #4:  Tommy Greene pitches five shutout innings as Sugar Land takes an early lead on Griffey, Jr.’s 2-run shot. Greene can’t continue due to injury (5 days) and starter Langston is called upon in middle relief. Carpenter and Poole (vs, 1) finish up the 4-1 SLS win.
Game #5:  This time Willis blows the save and Sugar Land gets a walk-off 2-run single from Pagliarulo. Nelson gets the relief win in the 3-2 SLS victory.
Game #6:  Sugar Land scores early and often as Moore (1-2) is hammered. Minor and Mason also struggle in relief. Karsay gets the win with 5 shutout innings, McElroy a 15 BF save. Bell has 4 hits. Daulton has a crazy line 2-3-2-3 with 4 walks and a HR. Gibson is 3-3-3-2 with a HR. Every SLS starter either scores or drives in a run.
Game #7:  Moyer and Langston match zeroes through seven. Valdosta goes to their pen but Langston soldiers on. It eventually goes 11 with White singling in Alou, who had stolen second after a one-out single, for the only run. Langston goes the distance, facing 41 batters and throwing about 145 pitches. This prompts an article in Baseball Prospectus by Rany Jazayerli inventing Pitcher Abuse Points.
Series Summary:  Sugar Land takes five of seven.
Chicago Demolition @ Fort Worth Panthers
Series Summary:  Panther’s take the series 5 games to 2.
Flossmoor Flying Squirrels @ Portland Mavericks
Series Preview:  Flossmoor and Portland both have aspirations in the AL. Flossmoor the more flashy team by far. Can the workmanlike attitude of Portland compete? Only time will tell.
Game #1:  Steve Avery 1-0 2.84 POR vs David Cone 1-0 1.17 (FLO)

Portland starts out sloppy at home, giving up runs on errors and a WP. David Cone pitches a gem giving up just 1 run through 8 innings on 4 hits. Portland made it close over Cone left the game after a 2-run HR by Zeile, but fall just short as Squirrels get the 4-3 win. Bagwell gets his first HR for Flossmoor.

Game #2:  Rodger Pavlik 1-0 3.86 (POR) Greg Maddux 1-1 1.59 (FLO)
Fryman hits the first pitch out of the park for the Flying Squirrels (3), before many of the Portland fans have time to sit down with their beer. Portland strikes back with back-to-back doubles by Wilkins and Clark. 2-1 Portland after one.
Portland breaks it open in the 7th inning with a 3-run HR by Joe Carter (1). 5-1 after 7.
BUT, after Flossmoor gets one run back in the 8th inning, Benzinger blasts a monster GRAND SALAMI to give send the Squirrels flying into the lead 6-5.
In the bottom of the 8th, Will Clark gets a single RBI to tie it up. Portland then loads the bases with one out. Jeff Conine then hits it DEEP DEEP DEEP to right, but Puckett picks it clean! One runs scores on the sac fly though. 7-6 after 8.
With one out in the 9th, Flossmoor loads the bases yet again. What a game sports fans! Gant gets a sac fly to tie it up 7-7.
In the bottom of the 9th, Portland gets two on before Rick Wilkens sends one deep into the night sky, over the right field fence, and off the Multnomah Athletic Club in right field. The Portland fans dance in the streets on their way into bars. No one shows up for work in Portland on Friday morning.
Game #3:  Ken Hill 0-0 11.57 (POR) Greg Hibbard 0-2 14.54 (FLO)
Wow, should be a lot of runs in this one with the bad starts the two pitchers have.
Portland strikes first with a two-run shot by Zeile in the 2nd, his third of the year. Bagwell answers back for Flossmoor with a solo shot (2), and a 2-run double by Pendleton gives the Squirrels the lead. Flossmoor gets one more on an error for a bit 4-run inning and a 4-2 lead.
That one big inning was all Flossmoor needed as they coast to the 6-2 win.
Game #4:  Aaron Sele 1-0 0.00 (POR) vs Jose Rijo 2-0 2.51 (FLO)
Pitching duel until the bottom of the 8th when Portland gets one on a RBI single by Lance Johnson. And that was all she wrote as both teams sprinkle just six hits total.
Game #5:  Dave Fleming 1-0 1.35 (POR) vs David Cone 2-0 1.15 (FLO)
Benzinger starts things off for Flossmoor with a 2-run HR. (2). A two-run double by Blauser answers back for Portland. 3-2 Portland after 3. A back and forth affair has the game tied after 7. 5-5. In the 8th, Hatcher can’t get the bat on a suicide squeeze for the Squirrely ones, and Palmer is DOA.
But Flossmoor scores another in the 9th off yet another Portland miscue to take the lead 6-5. Knoblauch doubles to lead of the 9th for Portland as the crowd buzzes (or is buzzed, one of those). Blauser walks, and Wilkins, the game 2 hero steps up… and strikes out. Stocker pinch hits for Portland… and hits into a game ending double play. Ouch.
Game #6:  Steve Avery 1-1 3.29 (POR) vs Greg Maddux 1-1 3.00 (FLO)
Steve Avery pitches a brilliant 1-hitter for Portland and Lance Johnson somehow manages to get thrown out THREE times without even trying to steal!
Game #7:  Rodger Pavlik 1-0 2.70 (POR) vs Jimmy Key 1-0 1.59 (FLO)
Mean Dean Palmer rips a two-run shot for Flossmoor in the first, and FFS had two more runs for a big 4-0 lead before Portland even steps to the plate. Portland can’t answer and Squirrels get the 6-3 win.
Series Summary:  Flossmoor moves into a tie with Portland on top the AL West with the 4-3 series win, and it will be a monumental task to try to knock them off the perch if they get there. Portland heads to California next, and the Squirrels head to Detroit. Portland wins both games vs the hated Greg Maddux, so it wasn’t all bad.
Corktown Bootleggers @ California Quakes
Series Summary:  California takes 6 of 7 from Corktown, and suffers another injury to a key player, Jeff Fassero. It’s been a shaky start for the Quakes
