Game #1: | Pitchers duel in game one as Greg Maddux and Chris Bosio square off. Squirrels strike first on a Ron Karkovice solo shot in the third. Dogs answer with a run in the 6th.
It’s 1-1 to the bottom of the 8th when Ron Gant blasts a two run homer off Bosio to give Flossmoor the lead. Gregg Olson shuts the door 1-2-3 in the 9th for the win. Final FFS 3 MCC 1 |
Game #2: | Flossmoor strikes early with two in the first. Sierra walks to lead it off, then a hit and run with Puckett puts runners on the corners. Jeff Bagwell walks to load em up and Dawson and Travis Fryman follow with sac flies. 2-0 FFS after one.
A disastrous turn for Mexico City in the 2nd and future Hall of Famers Tony Gwynn and Ozzie Smith collide and are lost for the rest of the series. Meanwhile Flossmoor plates two more to make it 4-0 after two innings. Squirrels add two more in the 6th to lead it 6-0. That was plenty for David Cone who pitches 8+ and allows just a solo homer in the 9th. Flossmoor wins it 6-1 |
Game #3: | Once again it’s the home side getting on the board early. This time Kirby Puckett goes deep in the first with a runner aboard.
Eddie Taubensee adds to the lead with a solo shot in the 4th to make it 3-0 Flossmoor. Harold Baines goes yard in the 6th to make it 4-0. And then Puckett hits his second of the game, this time a solo shot in the 7th. Meanwhile Jimmy Key was on his game and tosses the complete game shutout. Final FFS 5 Mexico City 0 |
Game #4: | Mexico City strikes first with a couple of runs in the top of the 2nd inning. It could have been a lot more but Kirk McCaskill induces a double play with the bases loaded to get out of the jam.
Two more in the 3rd for Mexico City and McCaskill is lifted for Hitchcock who gets another bases loaded double play to end the inning. 4-0 Taco Dogs. Flossmoor gets a run in the bottom of the third on a Gant double but Mexico City busts it open in the 6th with four more runs. Squirrels wave the white flag and pull the regulars. Mexico City adds two more on solo blasts and wins it easily 10-1 |
Game #5: | Two in the first off El Sid for Flossmoor as Sierra leads of the game with a dinger and Ron Gant follows with a double and comes home on TRavis Fryman’s two out single.
In the third Gant reaches, steals second, and scores on a Puckett single. 3-0 FFS Taco Dogs answer with two in the top of the 4th to cut the lead to one. Dean Palmer adds an insurance run with a solo homer in the 6th to make it 4-2. Gant chases Fernandez with a solo blast of his own in the 7th. Todd Worrell, Norm Charlton, and Gregg Olson lock it down for Greg Hibbard and the Squirrels hang on to win it 5-2. |
Game #6: | Back to back two out hits by Kirby Puckett and Bagwell plate a run in the first for Flossmoor. Harold Baines goes deep in the second to make it 2-0 FFS.
Mexico City gets one in the 4th as billion time gold glover Greg Maddux throws away a come backer with two outs to allow a run to score. Squirrels get the run back in the 6th on Baines second homer of the game. Greg Maddux goes 8 innings, fans 11 batters and Olson gets em 1-2-3 in the 9th for his third save of the series. Game #7: | Dean Palmer opens the scoring in the 2nd with a solo homer but Gladden answers with one of his own in the 3rd.
Back to back doubles to lead off the 4th by Kevin Mitchell and Mattingly give the Taco Dogs the lead. MCC plates another run in the 6th after an error opens things up. More injuries woes for Mexico City after Kevin Mitchell is hit with a pitch in the 7th and is lost for 23 days. But they score another run to lead it 4-1. Flossmoor gets a run in the 9th and brings the winning run to the plate, but Russell gets Baines to bounce out to end it. Final: Mexico City 4 Flossmoor 2 |
Series Summary: | Flossmoor takes the series five games to two and the teams flip places in the division as the Squirrels have come all the way back from last place to lead the AL West by a game and a half heading into the final series of the season.
Mexico City has two games in hand however so a tie remains a strong possibility. |

Game #1: | After Raines led off the game with a HR, Guzman settled down and gave up just 5 hits while striking out 11 over 8 innings in the Titans 4-1 win. OIiver had the key hit when he broke a 1-1 with a 2 run 2B in the 6th. |
Game #2: | Steel City again took an early lead and was up 2-1 in the bottom of the 7th when Reimer gave Long Beach the lead with a 2 run 2B. Oliver followed with a hit scoring Reimer giving the Titans a 4-2 lead. Steel City cut the lead to 1 in the 8th but Farr came in and closed out the game for his 30th save in the 4-3 win. |
Game #3: | This time Long Beach took the early lead when Gonzales led off the bottom of the 1st with a HR. Steel City got single runs in the 2nd, 4th & 8th and won 3-1. Liebrandt pitched 6 strong innings and Vaughn led the offense with a HR and 2 RBI. |
Game #4: | This game went 15 innings. Sandberg knocked in Raines with the go ahead run and Eichhorn closed out the Sluggers 2-1 win. Both teams had multiple opportunities to score in extra innings but couldn’t get a hit until Sandberg came through. |
Game #5: | Martinez threw a 2-hit shutout against his old team as Long Beach won 6-0. He started the scoring in the 2nd when he singled in a run. Baerga capped it with a 2 run HR in the 8th. |
Game #6: | Steel City took a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the 6th when Long Beach tied it on a 3 run HR by Oliver. They got 2 more in the 7th on a Grebeck SF and a Baerga HR and won 5-4. After Steel City scored a run and had the tying run on in the 8th, Henke came in and retired the last 4 hitters to pick up the save. |
Game #7: | Grebeck broke a 1-1 tie in the 5th with a run scoring 3B and Long Beach won 2-1. After Perez pitched 5 strong innings the Titan bullpen threw 4 innings of hit-less ball to close out the win. |
Series Summary: | Long Beach won 5 of the 7 games to clinch a wild card. |
