Winnipeg had to play well vs first place Greytown to stay in the tight race. So up came three monster pinch hitters Young Lopez and Wedge. They were also going with a 4 man rotation. Would it be enough?
Game #1:
Mike Morgan was on for Germantown allowing only 1 run a Jay Buhner homer. While Benes gave up a 2 run homer to MacFarlane. Fetetrs got the save in this tight 3-1 pitching duel, Germantown 3 Winnipeg 1 W-Morgan(11-3) S-Fetters(3) L-Benes(10-5)
Game #2:
This time it was SMoltz on as he allowed just 1 run in 8 innings. Again Germantown got 2 in the second as Camineti homers and alomar was clutch. Germanton 2 Winnipeg 1 W-Smoltz(9-6) Montgomery(26) L-Candiotti(7-5)
Game #3:
Guzman was solid for Germantown 3 runs in 5.2 innings. But against glavine and the Winnipeg pen thats just too much to allow. Glavine just 2 hits and 1 run in 6 innings. Beck got the save. Winnipeg 3 Germantown 2. W-Glavine (8-6) L-Guzman(6-4) S-Beck(11)
Game #4:
Winnipeg sent their ace Schilling to face the Germantown ace Appier in a battle of A starters. Schilling allowed just 4 hits and 1 run in 7 innings. It was enough as Selkirk managed 5 runs off Appier and Hernandez. Winnipeg 5 Germantown 1 W-Schilling (12-6) L-Appier(10-6)
Game #5:
Germantown went with their 5th starter Mulholland Selkirk went back to Benes. In addition Selkirk started the the limited Lopez, and Young. It was ugly Winnipeg exploded for 12 runs. Benes was pulled after just 6 innings of 1 hit ball so K. Kile and Jackson finished the game off. Germantown managed two homers late in the blow out by Mack and Caminiti. W-Benes(11-5) L-Mulholland(6-4)
Game #6:
Suddenly an 0-2 start is a 3-2 series lead as the teams played a double header. Winnipegs pen was rested Germantown wasn’t so much as Mulholland had only went 2 innings. Germantown got a 1st inning run off Candiotti as Mack got and RBI single but the Grays did not add on as Candiotti pitched out of the jam. Morgan was cruising until the 4th when Winnipeg singled and walked him for 4 runs. The Winnipeg well rest pen did the rest. Winnipeg 4 Germantown 1 W_Candiotti(8-5) S-Rojas(14) L-Morgan(11-4)
Game #7: Winnnipeg had the result they were hoping for a 4 win series but they still had a chance in the second game of the double header. Smoltz allowed 3 runs in the first but Winnipeg ace Glavine could not make it hold up as Germantown got runs in the 3rd, 5th and 7th to tie the game. The Germantown micro pulled Smoltz after 5.1 innings and went to the pen. The game stayed 3-3 int he 12th when German town scored a run but Winnipeg scored a run on a steal attempt to tie the game 4-4. Then the bullpens continued to dominated until Germantown got a unearned run off Howell as Ventura made a tough error. Hernandez was asked to close it out but alas he fell apart under the workload as Selkirk came but with 2 runs as winnipeg used another bench card Pena to drive in the tying and winning runs. Micro stayed with the tiring Hernandez as all that was left was Frey. Winnipeg 6 Germantown 5 (14) W- Howell(4-3) L-Hernandez(2-3)
Summary:
This was a series where Winnipegs homefield advantage was huge. Every game was close and Winnipeg used alot of limited use big gun cards to stay in the race. A 5-2 win was not expected but happily taken. It wasn’t a bad series by Miller the Germantown micro but having knowledge of a double header coming up helped as Winnipeg bullpen was in better shape for the 3 games in 2 days. Player of the series was Omar Vizquel played great defense and got lots of clutch hits as he drove in 8 rbis.
