Summary:
Chicago only gets 3 of the 7 but that alone felt like a moral victory for them.

Summary:
Long Beach has been struggling at home all season. In the first game of this series, they fell behind 5-0 and decided to see if the road manager could do a better job. He took over and led the home team to a 7 game sweep of the series.

 

Winnipeg  Goldeyes  @ Steel City  Sluggers
Preview
Division rivals square off with playoff implications.
Game #1:
Steel City 3-1. Leibrandt just too strong, allowing only 2 hits through 7.
Game #2:
Steel City 9-3. Neither starter makes it through 5; Carlton Fisk goes 4-4 with two doubles and two RBI.
Game #3:
3-2 Winnepeg. Candiotti and Nolan Ryan have an excellent duel, but Winnepeg breaks the 2-2 tie in the 9th to win it.
Game #4:
Steel City 4-3. Dennis Martinez outpitches Curt Schilling; Andre Dawson and Milt Thompson go deep.
Game #5:
Steel City 6-4. Darryl Kile gets shelled for 6 earned runs in 1.1 innings and Ron Darling cruises to an easy victory. Sandberg adds a 3 run blast.
Game #6:
Winnepeg 4-1. Leibrandt doesn’t have it this time, and the Sluggers can only manage 4 hits.
Game #7:
Steel City 6-1. Bruce Hurst craftily navigates 5.2 innings while Danny Jackson is not so fortunate. Gilkey goes 3-3 with 2 RBI and Matt Nokes hits a solo HR.
Summary:
A 5-2 homestand against Winnepeg moves Steel City into 2nd place – but still well behind Germantown’s 2nd best record in the league.

Preview
Missouri Black Bears come to town to face the Germantown Grays. Both teams are in the hunt for the playoffs as the season approaches the stretch run.
Game #1:
Black Bears maul the Grays in the middle innings. Bears Offerman 2-4 2R 3b W Sb, O’Brien 2-5 3RBI R, Reboulet 2-5, Van Slyke 2-4 3R W 2Sb, and Bichette 4-5 3RBI. Wiliams provided 2.1 IP of scoreless relief. Grays Gagne 2-2 2RBI. Assenmacher and Barton pitched 3.1 innings of scoreless relief.
Bears 9-3.
Game #2:
Grays score two in the 7th and again in the 8th. Bears Gross 6IP 1R 2H 2W 3K. Grays Caminiti 2-4 RBI 2R HR. Aguilera, Hernandez and Montgomery pitched 3IP of scoreless relief.
Grays 5-3
Game #3:
Grays score two in the 7th and 3 in the 8th. Grays Thomas 3-4 3RBI R 2b Sb. Guzman 6IP 1R 1H 1W 5K. Barton, Aguilera, Hernandez and Assenmacher pitched 3IP of scoreless relief.
Grays 5-1.
Game #4:
Grays score 3 in the 1st and hold on. Bears Gonzalez 2-4 RBI R HR. Grays McRae 2-3 RBI R 2b. Finley 6.1IP 1R 5H 2W 8K.

Game #5:
Bears score 3 in the 1st. Grays Thomas 2-4 4RBI 2b. Morgan 6IP 2ER 1H 4W 3K. Hernandez, Fetters and Montgomery pitched 3IP of scoreless relief.

Summary:
Grays again get timely hitting and pitching to take 4 of 5.

 

Portland  Mavericks @ Flossmoor  Flying Squirrels
Preview
Portland vs Flossmoor
Game #1:
Maddux with a solid outing and gets some decent run support. The Squirrels bullpen makes things interesting but eventually they shut the door for a 7-4 win.
Game #2:
Cone has a tough start to the game allowing 2 runs in the first, but Flossmoor bounces back with four in the fourth thanks to some walks and errors. Cone settles down for 7 strong innings and the pen does the rest.
FFS wins 6-3
Game #3:
Back and forth game heads to extras at five apiece. In the 10th Flossmoor gets Bagwell to second with two outs, Palmer grounds it to the left side for what looks like the final out but the throw to first gets past Bream and Bags scores the winning run.
FFS 6-5 winners.
Game #4:
Strong starting performance for Portland who shuts down the Flossmoor offense to just one run. McCaskill pitches well but allows 2 runs and that’s all it takes.
Portland wins 2-1
Game #5:
A five run 9th for Portland is the difference in a 7-6 game.
Game #6:
Flossmoor gets five in the 2nd to chase the starter Castillo. A three run 6th for the Mavs make it a one run game but its all Maddux the rest of the way.
FFS wins 5-4.
Game #7:
Cone vs Hill in the finale is a pitchers duel. Mavs scrape one across in the 5th and make it stand up, throwing out the tying run in the 8th at the plate. Both pitchers go the distance.
Summary:
FFS takes the series four games to three but really could have had at least five if not six games. That’s the way it has gone this year for them.
