Michigan  Marauders @  Manhattan  Gas Hornets
Preview
NL East – tightly bunched at the top with the Gas Hornets holding a 1 game lead over Missouri and 2 games over Michigan. This week the Maruaders come to the Big Apple in hopes of making a move as the All-Star break approaches.Turns out to be a long series – not because of 7 games, but two extra inning affairs – one almost the length of two games!
Game #1: Nagy vs. Reed and Reed continues to pitch amazingly strong. Nagy does very well himself – giving up an rbi single to Schofield in the 2nd. With the Gas Hornets up 1-0 in the 9th, they turn it over to their strength – the bullpen – but Doug Jones has been on a weird spot lately and he gives up a lead-off double to Borders. Jackson singles him to 3rd. Webster flies out, but not deep enough. Randolph then grounds out and the tying run scores. Blown Save #5!
BUT ….
The Maruaders manage 4 hits over the next 8 innings (yes, it goes into the 17th). The Gas Hornets only manage 3. Tanana tosses 4.2 innings (3 hits, 3 walks), Edens tosses 4.1 (3 hits, 3 walks). Bottom of the 17th Bob Patterson leads off against Tanana (pitchers are hitting – not much left). He fans. Polonia then singles. Alicea rips one
deep to right that has extra bases all over it and Polonia comes all the way around to score the winning run. 2-1 in 17 innings.MIC 1-3-0 LP Tanana (1-3) 17 innings
MGH 2-11-0 WP Patterson (1-1)
Game #2:
Kamienecki vs. Welch – Both teams needs some rest in the bullpen, Welch goes 7 strong giving up 4 hits and a run. 1 of the hits was a 5th inning solo homer from Borders (2). Manhattan up 3-1 in the 7th when the score 2 more on a 2 run Schofield double (3 hits in the game). Welch leaves and Michigan takes advantage and scores 2 in the
8th to cut it to 5-3. Brady Anderson connected for a solo shot (9) as part of that rally. But Greg Harris is able to get the Gas Hornets through the 9th for the save.
MIC 3- 9-2 LP Kamieniecki (7-6)
MGH 5-10-0 WP Welch (6-2) S Harris (3)
Game #3:
Wickman vs. Stewart – Gas Hornets score in 1st, 3rd, 2 in the 4th and another in the 6th. Kelly 3 hits, Magadan 3 hits and 3 rbis pace the attack. But Dave Stewart goes 7 innings giving up 4 hits and no runs as Gas Hornets cruise to 5-0 victory.
MIC 0- 5-0 LP Wickman (2-2)
MGH 5-12-2 WP Stewart (6-6)
Game #4: DeShaies vs. Morris – in the 1st of two straight 4-3 games, the Marauders take a 2-0 lead in the 2nd when Palmeiro walks and Webster follows with a triple. Ripken drives him home on a ground out. Amaro homers (2) in the bottom half to cut it to 2-1. Gas Hornets tie it in the 4th but Palmeiro breaks that up with a solo homer (9) in the 7th.  Henneman in for the 8th and Tino Martinez connects for a 2 run shot (7) to reverse the lead and give the Gas Hornets the win as Jones is able to convert the save in the 9th.
Again Morris strong (no decision) but gives up only 3 hits.
MIC 3-3-0 LP Henneman (2-4) BS (3)
MGH 4-9-0 WP Gott (6-4) S D.Jones (15)
Game #5: Gullickson vs. Hershiser – both guys do well, but both are gone long before this one finishes, 6 innings of FREE BASEBALL. Gas Hornets take a 3-1 lead into the 6th but they rally for 2 when Ripken draws the 1 out walk. Orsulak doubles him to 3rd. Hoiles pops out but Palmeiro walks to load them up. Jackson then stays with the pitch
and drives it into RF for a 2 run single and it’s tied. STAYS THAT WAY A LONG TIME. 8 straight scoreless innings. Powell comes on in the 15th after Henneman was lifted for pinch-hitter and 1st batter Benito Santiago greets him with a walk-off homer (8) to end the game.
MIC 3- 7-0 LP Powell (0-1) 15 innings
MGH 4-12-2 WP D.Jones (3-2)
Game #6: Nagy vs. Reed – rematch from game 1, this time it only goes 9 innings – but it had the earmarks of maybe going longer. Gas Hornets get on the board with 1 in the 4th. Reed holds them in check through 8 but gets a bit tired in the 8th. With 1 out, Slaught PHs for Nagy and singles (Webster into run). Anderson can’t get out of the way
of a Reed pitch, runners at 1st and 2nd. Palmeiro pops out, looking good, but Bernie Williams says no – and he singles to CF, Yount makes a good play keeping it to 1 run and the game is tied! BUT not for long – Bottom half Guthrie comes in and gives up 3 runs, 2 earned on 2 hits and Powell gives up 2 walks, a hit and run – but an Easley error and a Powell error spell doom as Gas Hornets score 4.
MIC 1-7-2 LP Guthrie (1-3)
MGH 5-9-0 WP Reed (5-2)
Game #7: Kamieniecki vs. Welch – sweep is in the air especially when Gas Hornets get 1 in the 1st, 2nd and 2 in the 3rd. Livingstone gets 4 hits in the game. Sweep is still in the air even after Welch gives up a 3 run homer (1) to Orsulak in the 6th. Gas Hornets get 1 more in the 6th and it’s 5-3 going to the 9th. Greg Harris on the mound and he fans Jackson. Brunansky then walks. Randolph walks and Doug Jones comes in. Webster up, Samuel running at 1st and Webster drives one down the line past Tino, the other Martinez (Dave) gets it near the corner and is able to hold Samuel at 3rd but one run scores, 5-4 Manhattan. Brady Anderson up, he bounces one up the middle driving in both runners for a 6-5 lead! Another DJ blown save. Bottom half, Guthrie still on the mound gets Huson for the 1st out. Then Livingstone gets his 4th hit (infield single). Young comes in to face Tino – he singles to RF, runners now on 1st and 2nd, 1 out, crowd coming back to life. Walker comes into PR at 2nd (why he didn’t come in earlier
only Schindel knows). Dave Martinez up and he flies out with no advancement. Yount up, Powell sets, the throw to the plate – strike and Borders comes up throwing hard down to 2nd and he PICKS OFF WALKER to end the game!! And spoil the chance for a sweep (or was that Jones).
MIC 6- 8-1 WP Guthrie (2-3) S Powell (1)
MGH 5-11-1 LP D.Jones (3-3) BS (6)
Summary:
So Gas Hornets take 6 of 7 in a wild series. – Almost 9 games worth of pitching. All-Star break and it’s on for the 2nd half. Michigan stays on the road going to Sugarland while Manhattan stays at home and hosts Valdosta.
