Corktown  Bootleggers @ Fort Worth Panthers
Summary: The AL’s two best hitting teams squared off when the Bootleggers came to visit the Panthers in Ft. Worth.
The Panthers take the series 5 games to 2. Lots of offense in this one. For the series FWP hit .311 with 16 doubles, 2 triples (both occurred in the first game by McGriff), and 2
home runs. CBL hit .265 with 13 doubles, 1 triple, and 7 home runs (3 hit in game 7).
The Panther’s ERA was 3.71 while the Bootleggers was 4.62 – 5.47 if you take out Cook’s CG shutout in game 5.
Next week Corktown hosts the suddenly hot California Quakes while Ft. Worth continues their home stand against Portland.

 

Manhattan  Gas Hornets @ Sugar Land Skeeters
Preview
First place Manhattan (35-23) visits last-place Sugar Land (18-44), hoping to beat up on the cellar team.
Game #1:
Manhattan starts strong with a 6-2 win in 11, aided by an unassisted triple play by Chico Walker.
Game #2:
Manhattan wins again, 6-4.
Game #3:
Sugar Land wins, 3-2 in 11. Starters Stewart and Alvarez pitch well but don’t factor in the decision.
Game #4:
Seven strong for Langston as Sugar Land wins, 4-3
Game #5:
Sugar Land wins again, 6-5, behind two solo HR by Alou.
Game #6:
Tapani pitches seven strong as Sugar Land wins their fourth straight by one run, 2-1.
Game #7:
Butch Henry finishes the series by scattering 10 hits in just falling short of a CG Shutout. He also doubles ina run. Sugar Land wins its fifth straight, 2-0.
Summary:
Big surprise as the Skeeters pull off a surprising 5-2 series win. Daulton scores four runs and drives in seven.

Janesville  Juggernauts @ Portland  Mavericks
Preview
Juggernauts and the Mavs hover in the bottom-ish of the NW West, but yet, still within striking distance by the end of the year.
Game #1:
Portland gets 3 in the 3rd, and never relinquishes the lead, winning 7-2.
Game #2:
Both Cormier and Swindell are on their mark, but Portland escapes with the 2-1 win.
Game #3:
Trombley and Flemming both pitch brilliantly again, but Tombley’s first hit of the game, to Will Clark in the 7th inning is all Portland needs, giving Trombley the heartbreaking 2-hit loss 1-0.
Game #4:
A wild and wooly affair sees the ‘Nauts get the win in the 14th! 5-4 Janesville.
Game #5:
Janesville wins again as Eldred gets the 3-hit shutout. 1-0.
Game #6:
Portland scores in every inning as everything goes right for the Mavericks, and wrong from Janesville. 18-0 is the final as Portland out hits the ‘Nauts 21-2. Bruce Ruffin gives up and astounding 11 earned runs in relief.
Game #7:
Portland gets the 1 run win after an improbably Lance Johnson homerun 3-2.
Summary:
Portland gets the series win 5-2, and stands just one game back of .500 after being 11 games under not too long ago. Janesville drops to 31-39.

Both ‘pens are leaky, but STO pulls it out with a late two-run HR by Robby Thompson. STO also had yhree other bombs.

THompson is the hero again, with a three-run single for the difference. Wickander is the winner in relief of Astacio, who left in the third with an injury. He’ll miss 23 games.

HR: STO–Hrbek

Mussina and Whitehurst traded zeroes for 10 innings, but Mussina lasted one more to get the win when Hrbek hit a two-out walk-off 11th inning solo shot. Whitehurst only gave up four hits and deserved a better fate.

Chicago built an early 3-0 lead but STO chipped away until a 4-run 6th inning blew it open.

Valdosta travels to Michigan for 7 games. Michigan is battling for 2nd place in the NL East.
Game #1:

Michigan scores 2 in the 5th to take the lead, and they cling to the lead and win. Bernie Williams goes 4 for 4. Deshaies wins his 7th game for Michigan. Guthrie picks up his 7th save. Osborne drops to 7-4.

Game #2:

Valdosta 3 Michigan 2

Valdosta breaks a 2-2 tie in the 9th inning. Scott Cooper hits a pinch hit double. Earlier, Steve Sax hits a homer. Boever goes to 5-0 in relief. The loss goes to Plesac, 2-3.

Game #3:

Michigan 6 Valdosta 3

Joe Orsulak goes 4 for 4 with 2 RBIs for Michigan. Charles Nagy throws a solid 7 innings, and picks up the win. He is now 9-3. Shane Reynolds drops to 2-3.

Game #4:

Michigan 3 Valdosta 2

Once again, like games 1 and 2, there is a 3-2 score. Chris Hoiles hits a 2 run homer. Scott Kamieniecki gets the win, 7-4. Guthrie picks up his 9th save. Matt Moore drops to 1-9.

Game #5:

Michigan 6 Valdosta 2

Bernie Williams with a big pinch hit single, which scores 2 runs. Steve Sax hits his 3rd homer for Valdosta. Gaetti goes 2 for 2.

Matt Young gets the win in relief. Burba drops to 2-9.

Game #6:

Valdosta 3 Michigan 1

Donovan Osborne with a dominating 7 innings for Valdosta. He goes to 8-4. John Franco earns his 7th save. Deshaies drops to 7-4. Bernie Williams scores the only run for Michigan as he hits a pinch homer.

Game #7:

Valdosta 2 Michigan 1

Trevor Wilson with a tremendous start for the Bombers. He throws a complete game with one unearned runs. Easley with a RBI for Michigan. In the 8th inning, it was big, Clark with a 2 run homer for Valdosta to win the game. Trevor Wilson goes to 3-5. The loss goes to Gullickson – 3-6.

Summary:
Valdosta gets 2 well pitched games in 6 and 7 to make the series close. Michigan wins 4 of 7 from Valdosta.

Preview
Winnipeg in a dead-heat for the NL East lead with Grays and Sluggers look to fatten up on the NL West bottom-feeder Bandits.

Candiotti (4-3) vs. Le’ Big Unit (3-8)

Eddie Murray goes deep and Johnson tosses 8 solid innings to win a squeaker. Lee Smith picks up save #7.

Game #2:

Winnpieg 2 Blarney Drive 5

Jackson (2-3) vs. Stottlemyre (0-7)

Stottlemyre gets the monkey off his back for win #1 and Smith gets his 8th save. Murray continues his his hot hitting with 2 doubles.

Game #3:

Winnipeg 4 Blarney Drive 7

Kile (1-1) vs. Wells (4-6)

Kile allows 5 over the 4th, 5th and 6th for no chance at a W. Wells goes deep into the game for the victory. Goldeneyes plate 2 in the 8th to make it tight but the Bandits match.

What is going on!? Bandits lead the series 3-0!!

Game #4:

Winnipeg 10 Blarney Drive 2

Schilling (7-4) vs. Black (2-4)

Deveraux hits back-to-back jacks to end his game and drive in 5. This was an ol’ fashion beat down as the Goldeneyes tally 14 safeties. Schilling snags his 8th W.

Game #5:

Winnipeg 2 Blarney Drive 7

Glavine (4-4) vs. Hanson (3-8)

Deveraux drills one deep in his first AB to make it 3 round-trippers in a row. That was the last fastball he saw in the series. With Winnipeg up 2-1 in the bottom of the 7th, the Bandits unleash the hounds and score 6. Glavine seemed to just hit a wall. Hanson gets his 4th win of the season and Seitzer drives in 2.

Game #6:

Winnipeg 5 Blarney Drive 1

Candiotti (4-4) vs. Johnson (4-9)

Deveraux with a RBI and Vizquel drives in 2 to help Candiotti topple Johnson. Mel Rojas secures stops a late threat for his 5th save.

Game #7:

Winnipeg 2 Blarney Drive 1

Benes vs. Stottlemyre (1-7)

Benes leaves after 1 pitch with a sore shoulder and Stottlemyre gets no love again. Todd sports a 3.61 ERA on the season and falls to 1-8. Winnipeg scores single runs in the 3rd and 5th and Blarney Drive the 4th. Power gets an emergency start W and Rojas save #6.

Summary:
Irish Village rocked and the Guinness flowed heavy as the Bandits steal a series from Winnipeg 4-3.
