Winnipeg  Goldeyes @ Manhattan  Gas Hornets
Preview
Winnipeg (19-12, T2 NL West) comes to Manhattan (15-16, T2 NL East).
Teams fighting to establish where they’ll be this year. Manhattan is a bit so-so, Goldeyes, well, they could be really good.
Game #1:
Gas Hornets get 1 in the 1st – Buhner ties it up in the 4th on a ground out. But the old Gas Hornet combo McReynolds and Yount get the go ahead run in the 7th. Jones is able to make it stick as Reed goes to 3-0 in his 3rd start. Low hit totals for both teams.
WGE 1-4-0 LP Candiotti (3-2)
MGH 2-5-1 WP Reed (3-0) S D.Jones (5)
Game #2:
McGwire pounds out 2 hits, both homers (7, 8) both for 2 runs including 1 in the 1st as the Goldeyes drive Pichardo to the showers in the 5th (10 hits, 6 runs). McGwires 4 rbis lead the way. Benes goes 8 strong (6 hits, 1 run).
WGE 6-12-0 WP Benes (5-1)
MGH 1- 7-1 LP Pichardo (2-2) – Benes has that look of the surprise quality pitcher for the year.
Game #3:
This game seemingly belonged to Bobby Witt as he goes the distance giving up 7 hits and no runs. Walker homers (2) in support and Santiago drives in 2.
WGE 0-7-1 LP Schilling (4-3)
MGH 5-9-0 WP Witt (2-3)
Game #5: McGwire hits a 1st inning grand slam (9) to get the Goldeyes off to a 4-0 lead. The inning was also marked by 3 Bullinger walks. He ends up walking 7. BUT Bullinger was drafted not so much for his pitching (he will get lots of fill-in starts), but for his hitting. After the 1st, he settled down and then he got 2 hits. The first an rbi single, the 2nd a 2 run homer (1) to lead the offense with 3 rbis. The Gas Hornets turned around that 4-0 1st inning deficit by scoring 3 in the 2nd and then 2 runs in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th. By the time the dust settled, the final was 10-5 Manhattan. Bullinger gives up 3 hits – 5 RUNS – 7 WALKS and wins the game.
WGE 5- 5-1 LP Glavine (1-4)
MGH 10-13-0 WP Bullinger (1-1)
Game #5: Gas Hornets score 3 in the 1st and then work the Polonia (3 hits) and Kelly (4 hits) combo throughout the game. Goldeyes score 2 in the 4th to draw to 3-2, but that was as close as it would get as Manhattan gets 1 in the 4th, 2 in 5th and 6th. Walker drives in 3. Jackson hammered for 10 hits in 5 innings to go with 3 walks and it cost them 7 runs (2 unearned on a Buhner error. He leaves game later when hit by a pitch, but will be ready for the next series.
WGE 3- 7-1 LP Jackson (1-2)
MGH 8-13-0 WP Stewart (3-4)
Summary
Manhattan surprisingly takes 4 of 5 from Winnipeg. They hope to carry on that energy next week, but face a real tough them in the Long Beach Titans. Winnipeg stays in the East to face division leader Valdosta.

Another Fryman error, his third in as many games, opens the door to a three run 8th for the Bootleggers.

Meanwhile Olivares goes the distance for a 4 hit shutout. The numbers say David Cone should be good and the Flying Squirrels offense should be able to score, but thus far the results have been much different.

CBL 5 – FFS 0

Game #4:

Harper opens the scoring in the 2nd with a solo shot for Corktown.

Flossmoor on the board in the 3rd on Taubensee’s two run shot. Squirrels add another in the 5th to make it 3-1 on Gant’s RBI single.

But Leo Gomez ties it up in the next half inning with a two run bomb and two batters later the Bootleggers take the lead.

The Flossmoor pen takes a shit in the 7th and allows two more runs.

Squirrels get two in the 8th to cut it to one but that’s all they muster as Hernandez shuts it down.
