Perez goes the distance and the Stars take game one 5-1.
Game #2:
A close fought affair, Detroit hangs on for a 4-2 win to lead the series 2-0.
Game #3:
The Juggernauts bullpen goes 3.1 innings and holds the Stars to one hit as Janesville wins game three 5-3.
Game #4:
Rookie Danny Neagle wins his first game of the season and Janesville ties the series up with a 7-5 win.
Game #5:
In the fourth straight 2 run game, the Stars win game five 4-2.
Game #6:
The final game of the series sees an offensive onslaught, as both teams combine for 27 hits and 23 runs, but Janesville comes out on top with a 15-8 win.

Steel City jumps on Sutcliffe early with 6 in the 1st inning. Nokes, Gilkey, and Milt Thompson hit homers for the Sluggers. Leibrandt wins his 1st game and Lilliquist records the save. Sutcliffe loses his 2nd.
Game #2:
Steel City 2 Michigan 0
Nolan Ryan spins a shutout. He strikes out 12. Mark Grace goes 4 for 4. Nagy gets a tough loss for Michigan. Ryan wins his second and Nagy loses his 2nd.

Michigan 7 Steel City 2
Jim Deshaies picks up the win and goes to 4-0. Palmeiro knocks in 2 runs. Bruce Hurst loses his 2nd game.

Dave Hollins with a homer, triple, and drives in 4 runs. Gullickson loses his 1st game. Dennis Martinez gives up 3 hits and is 2-2.

Flossmoor comes cross town in the Windy City to take on Rivals the Demolition in a 5 game set.
Game #1:
Wade Boggs gets injured after 1 At-Bat & won’t return until game 4 of the series. Junior Felix has 3 Hits, Jeff King 2 RBI’s. Wally Whitehurst (1-0 3.14) picks up his 1st win on the season. Kent Bottenfield his 1st Save. Ron Gant has 3 Hits for the Flying Squirrels.
Final Score: Chicago 6 – Flossmoor 4
Game #2:
All Flying Squirrels in this one. Ron Gant is 6 for 6, Kirby Pucket is 5 for 6 with 4 RBI’s/ Jeff Bagwell is 1 for 1 with 3 RBI’s, & then is plunked & taken off the field for the day. Dean Palmer has only 1 Hit, but that lone hit is a Grand Slam. Kirk McCaskill (1-1 4.91) is solid through 8 giving up only 2 Earned Runs.
Final Score: Flossmoor 14 – Chicago 2
Game #3:
Greg Hibbard (1-2 3.54) goes 8 Innings for the win. Kirby Puckett is 2 for 4 with 2 RBI’s. Deam Plamer chips in with 2 more RBI’s.
Final Score: Flossmoor 6 – Chicago 1
Game #4:
What can you say when Greg Maddux is on the mound. Maddux is stellar for 8 Innings, allowing 2 Hits, 3 Walks & Striking out 7 Demolition hitters along the way. Travis Fryman is 4 for 4 with an RBI.
Final Score: Flossmoor 3 – Chicago 0
Game #5:
Roger Clemens (1-2 2.15) despite a low ERA Clemens picks up his 1st Win on the season. Reggie Jefferson is 2 for 4 with 2 RBI’s. Kent Bottenfield (2nd Save) closes the door on the Flying Squirrels.
Final Score: Chicago 5 – Flossmoor 2
Summary
Chicago wins the book ends of the 5 game set, but in the middle games looked like a 5th place team. Right about where they will end up in the American League East.

 

Winnipeg  Goldeyes @ Long Beach  Titans
Preview
In an early season match up between 2 teams who look like contenders in the NL West, Long Beach hosts Winnipeg for 7 games.
Game #1:
Schilling was dominant over 8 innings, giving up just 5 hits and a run in Winnipeg’s 6-3 win. Ventura drove in 2 runs to lead the offense.
Game #2:
Pendleton hit a SF to score Gonzales in the 3rd with the only run of the game in a Long Beach 1-0 win. Tomlin pitched into the 8th and left with runners on 1st and 3rd with 1 out. Ward came in and got Roberts to line into a DP to end the threat. Farr pitched the 9th and struck out Pena to end the game.
Game #3:
Long Beach came back from a 3-1 deficit and tied in on a Pendleton 2B in the 4th. They took the lead in the 5th on a Reimer HR and that stood up as Long Beach won 4-3 even though they were outhit 12-7. The Titans bullpen threw 5 scoreless innings in the win.
Game #4:
Scioscia hit a SF to break a 3-3 tie in the 5th. From there Winnipeg shut down the Long Beach offense and won 4-3. It got interesting in the 9th when the Titans put runners on 1st and 2nd but Howell got Pendleton to fly out ending the game.
Game #5:
Gonzales hit a 2 run HR in the 7th to break a 4-4 tie and give Long Beach a 6-4 win. Winnipeg had runners on 2nd and 3rd in the 8th but Ward came in to retire Scioscia. He finished the 9th for his first save of the year.
Game #6:
Schilling and Viola had a great pitcher’s duel as neither gave up a run through 8 innings. Gonzales led off the bottom of the 9th with a HR giving Long Beach a 1-0 win.
Game #7:
Pendleton broke a 1-1 tie with an RBI 2B in the 6th. Vaughn added a 2 run HR in the 8th to make the final 4-1. The Long Beach bullpen was strong again with 4 shutout innings.
Summary
Long Beach won 5 of 7 in a very close series that featured 4 1 run games.

 

Blarney Drive  Bandits @ Germantown  Grays
Preview
The Blarney Drive Bandits come to Germantown for an early season series. Both teams are in the middle of the pack and trying to define their season.
Game #1:
Germantown jumps out fast and coasts to victory in the opener. Bandits Weathers pitched 2.1 IP scoreless relief. Grays Thomas was 2-5 RBI R, Mack 4-4 2RBI R 2b and Finley pitched 8.2 innings of shutout ball in his first start of the season.
Grays 7-0.
Game #2:
Grays score in the 1st, but the Bandits tie it in the 3rd and that’s how it would stand until Grays Mack banged in the game winner in the 11th. Bandits Stottlemyre went 8 IP 1R on 3H & 3W w/ 4K and Murphy pitched 2 innings of scoreless relief. Grays Mack was 3-5 RBI 2-2b. Morgan pitched 7.2 IP 1R on 2H & 0W w/3K and Nied, Fetters and Hernandez pitched 3.2 innings of scoreless relief.
Grays 2-1 in 11.
Game #3:
Grays bring across 5 in the 1st and hold on. Bandits Myers and Wells pitch 8 innings of scoreless relief. Grays Jose was 2-4 R 2b. Appier pitched 5IP allowing 0R on 1H & 2W w/ 3K and Montgomery pitched 2 IP of scoreless relief for the save.
Grays 5-2.
Game #4:
Grays took a 5 run lead into the 5th and held on. Bandits Bordick was 3-5 2R 2b. Murphy and Lweis pitched 4.1IP of scoreless relief. Grays Gagne was 2-3 2RBI R HR. Smoltz pitched 6IP allowing 2R on 4H & 5W w/ 4K.
Grays 5-4.
Game #5:
2-2 after 4, but Grays add a couple more later. Grays Alomar went 2-4 RBI R. Guzman pitched 7IP allowing 0 ER on 3H & 1W w/ 3K. Aguilera and Montgomery pitched 2 innings of scoreless relief.
Grays 4-2.
Game #6:
Bandits pound Finley for 8 runs through 3 innings, but the Grays come back and tie it in the 4th. Bandits Henderson, Hamilton, Clark Murray, Bordick, Mayne and Hanson all record 2 hits. Lewis and Smith pitch 3 scoreless innings to finish. Grays Jose, Caminiti, McRae and Gagne each get 2 hits and Fetters, Hernandez, Nied and Montgomery pitch 4.2 innings of scoreless relief.
Grays 9-8.
Game #7:
The finale goes 12 with the Bandits scoring in the top. However, the Grays plate 2 in the bottom half. Bandits Seitzer was 3-5 RBI R. Stottlemyre had another fine start going 6.1IP allowing 1R on 8H & 5W w/ 6K. Smith, Myers and Murphy pitched 4.1 innings of scoreless relief. Grays Jose 2-5 2b W IBB, Mack 2-4 RBI R 2W Sb and McRae 2-5. Muhlholland went 8.1IP 1R 4H 7 1W w/5K. Nied, DiPino, Aguilera pitched 2.2 innings of scoreless relief.
Grays 3-2 in 12.
Summary
Grays sweep the series to change the outlook on the season and face last years East champs next series. Bandits Stottlemyre was the player of the series.

Fort Worth @ Stockton for a 7 game series between 1st and 2nd place in the AL East

Tettleton had three RBI, Thompson and Lewis had two hits apiece, and Mussina pitched well over six innings.

Sheffield and DeShields had two RBI each and FWP had a five-run sixth inning to put the game away.

Zane Smith was lights out, scattering three hits. Drabek went the distance as well, but got touched for two runs in the second inning.

HR: FWP–DeShhields, McGriff; STO–Hayes

Tewksbury had a no-hitter broken up with one out in the eight inning on an infield hit by Mike Lavalliere. Hayes followed with a two-run homer for STO’s only runs. FWP jumped on Oliveras early.

HR: none

Winfield’s three RBI were all Brown needed, but Sheffield and Weiss added some late-inning insurance runs. Brown scattered five hits.

HR: none

Mussina won his second game of the series without striking anyone out. Robby Thompson supplied three of the game’s four RBI.

Game #7:

FWP 4 – STO 3 (11 innings)

WP: Austin
LP: Olin

HR: FWP–Parrish; STO–Walker

FWP held the lead into the seventh inning on Parrish’s three RBI, but Eric Anthony’s two-run single in the bottom closed the gap. Larry Walker stroked a game-tying home run in the bottom of the ninth, but STO couldn’t push another run across. Roberto Kelly’s RBI single in the top of the eleventh gave FWP the lead and Mike Maddux came in to nail it down.

Summary
FWP takes the series 5 games to 2.
There were three shutouts and four Complete Games in the series Delino DeShields hit safely in every game, and had two HRs in the series Mike Mussina had (STO’s only) two wins and 13 IP with no strikeouts.

 

Manhattan  Gas Hornets @ Valdosta  Bombers
Preview
Manhattan visits sunny south Georgia.
Game #1:
Valdosta 10-3. Dave Burba (1-2) pitched into the 8th as the Bombers were on cruise control.
Game #2:
Valdosta 7-5 (11 Innings). Hornets allowed 5 unearned runs which was a killer for them.
Game #3:
Valdosta 5-4. Three Hornets errors led to another unearned run and was the difference in the contest.
Game #4:
Valdosta 1-0, Mark Gubicza pitched 8 shutout innings but Franco got the win in relief. Pagnozzi knocked in the winning run and threw out 3 would be base stealers.
Game #5:
Valdosta 1-0. Mike Moore went the distance for the shutout and Bill Doran provided the offense with a solo HR.
Game #6:
Manhattan 3-2. Bob Welch rights the ship for the Hornets with 8 strong IP. Doug Jones picked up his 2nd save of the campaign.
Game #7:
Valdosta 3-1. Donovan Osborne improved to 4-0 with a CG victory.
Summary
A very surprising series for Valdosta as they win 6 of 7. The series featured 24 SB’s and just 8 HR’s between the two clubs.
