1991 NATIONAL LEAGUE DIVISION SERIES #1

Winnipeg GoldeyesWinnipeg @ Sugar Land Skeeters

Preview: National League East Champions the Sugar Land Skeeters (110-52) take on National League Wild Card #2 Seed Winnipeg Goldeyes (93-69) in a 5 game Division Series Match up.  Looks like a blowout on paper but Winnipeg won six of the ten regular season match ups. Both teams come in with injuries.

Game #1: Tom Glavine (20-8 2.35) vs. Mark Langston (24-9 2.17)

Langston’s control suffers both in and out of the zone as he walks three and allows two homers as he is pinch-hit for after four shaky innings, allowing seven runs. The big blow was by a lefty, Robin Ventura, who hit a three-run bomb in the fourth. Downing and Milligan also homer as Winnipeg wins, 9-5. Glavine himself is shaky, allowing 9 hits in 6 innings but gets the win.

Final Score: Winnipeg 9 – Sugar Land 5

Game #2: Tom Candiotti (19-9 2.06) vs. Kevin Tapani (18-17 2.29)

Another Cy Young candidate, Tom Candiotti (19-9, 2.06) starts game two for the Goldeyes against Kevin Tapani, among the league leaders in losses AND wins (18-17 but a stellar 2.29 ERA, weird season).

Steve Sax walks with one out in the first but is thrown out stealing by Biggio. Barberie, playing SS due to injuries, doubles and scores on a throwing error by veteran 2b Doran on a ball hit by Ventura (him again!). It stays that way until the bottom of the fifth as Tapani gets out of trouble time and again, allowing two hits and three walks over five.

In the fifth, Jay Bell stretches a double to a triple with one out. Cromartie bats for Tapani and singles Bell in.

Bottom seven, one out: Bell singles, and moves to second on a wild pitch. With two out Randy Bush singles Bell in for the 2-1 lead. Cotto pinch runs and steals second. Devon White walks and Flanagan relieves Candiotti. Griffey singles in Cotto to make it 3-1.

Top nine, one out: veteran Dewey Evans get a pinch-hit double and veteran George Bell hits a pinch-hit double. Roberts runs for Bell and scores on Lonnie Smith’s two-out single to tie it.

Bottom of the ninth, tied 3-3: Carl Willis in to relieve Flanagan. Scott Cooper pinch-hits and stretches a double to a triple. Pasqua is intentionally walked and Devon White walks to load them up. Marvin Freeman comes in and Griffey hits a walk-off single for the 4-3 win.
Lucky to get the split! Sugar Land ready for the next games at Winnipeg.

Final Score: Sugar Land 4 – Winnipeg 3

Game #3: Mark Langston (24-9 2.17) vs. Andy Benes (17-9 2.79)

Benes was great and Steve Sax drove in both runs.

Final Score: Winnipeg 2 – Sugar Land 1

Game #4: Kevin Tapani (18-17 2.29) vs. Tom Glavine (20-8 2.35)

Glavine was not good as Winnipeg gave up 6 early and could only muster 5 runs. as Sugar land evened the series 2-2.

Game #5: Tom Candiotti (19-9 2.06) vs. Tommy Greene (17-7 2.97)
