Preview
Valdosta is in third place playign around .400 ball. Winnipeg is int hird palce playing just under .600. Winnipeg was hoping to have a good series.
Game #1:
Benes pitched great and downing drove in 4 in a 6-1 Winnipeg win,.
Game #2:
Heart breaker for the home team as Valdosta wins in a comeback for Flannigan then takes it in 16 innings! Val 8 Wpg 6 Finley and Bream homered for Vald.
Game #3:
McGuire homers and Candiotti wins his 15th as the Goldeyes win a nail biter 4-3 as thier Winnipeg closer allows 2 runs to score int he 9th,.
Game #4:
Glavine pitched one of the BEST games of the year allowing just 1 hit and 1 walk in a 9 inning shutout. Wpg 2 Val 0
Game #5:
Once again Valdosta wins a in extra innings 2-1.
Summary
Winnipeg loses both extra innings games but does manage to win the series 3-2

 

Sugar  Land Skeeters @ Clovis  Cougars

Sugar Land at Clovis
Summary
Skeeters suck the blood out of Clovis outscoring them 47-4 in the five gamer for the crushing sweep. Game scores of 15-0. 11-2, 10-0, 3-1, and 8-1. But it wasn’t that close as Skeeters outplayed and outperformed the defending champs. Orlando Merced had the outstanding performance in game one with 4 runs 5 hits and 6 RBI with a homer and a double. Langston came within two outs of a no hitter before Hamilton singled in the ninth.

 

Long Beach  Titans @ Manhattan  Gas  Hornets
Preview
NL cellar dwellers go after each other as Long Beach goes cross country to play the Manhattan Gas Hornets. Long Beach has a 2-1 ration in the wins column as the series starts, 50-25, lets see if that trend continues.
Game #1:
Gas Hornets dominate this one for 8 innings with a 8-5 lead going into the 9th. But Righetti and Jones can’t keep it intact as Long Beach scores 4 in the 9th to steal the game. Along the way Grebeck hits a 2 run homer (4), Bearga gets 3 hits and Justice, Vaughn and Pecota each score twice.. Smith and Ward pitch 4.1 innings of shutout baseball.

Franky V makes quick work of this game going 8 innings giving up 5 hits and no runs. Klink keeps the Gas Hornets scoreless. Meanwhile Brooks (5) and Reimer (15) hit solo shots and Fielder hits a 2 run shot (33) to seal the deal for the Titans.

Shutout baseball continues, but this time it’s the Gas Hornets Matt Young who tosses a 5 hit CG shutout, fanning 8. McReynolds and Stillwell chip in 2 hits as part of the Manhattan attack that scoresthree runs off Long Beach starter Jaime Navarro.

Game #4:
After a day off to think things over, the Titans roar back for an 8-1 victory in game 4. Vaughn has a great game going 3 for 5, 2 rbis, 3 runs and 2 homers (16,17). Justice hits a solo shot (10) and Doug Dascenzo gets his 1st homer of the year – a 3 run Baltimore Special in the 8th. Tomlin pitches 6.1 for win – 2 hits and Ward, Smith and Swan blank the home team down the stretch.

Game #5:
Greg Harris gets a CG – and a win, rare for him on both accounts. He scatters 9 hits (3 of them to Dascenzo) and only gives up 1 run. Dave Hansen gets a 2 run single in the 1st and that was enough. The Gas Hornets did get one more in the 4th to wipe out the 1 run (Baerga rbi single) in the top half.

Summary
Manhattan feels like they won this series although they dropped 3 of 5 to the superior Long Beach squad (sort of). Titans go home knowing they are the better cellar dweller.

 

Missouri  Black Bears @ Michigan  Marauders
Preview
The Michigan manager is pinch-hitting for the Missouri manager in this series. It’s a good competitive series as usual.
Game #1:
Missouri 6 Michigan 3
Ripken hits a 3 run homer for Michigan, but it’s not enough. Missouri hits 4 homers – Sierra hits 2, O’Brien hits 1, and Matt Williams hits the other. Bielecki gets the win and Gott earns the save.
Game #2:
Michigan 7 Missouri 5 (11)
Dale Murphy hits the game winning 2 run homer in the 11th inning. Gaetti with 4 hits and Palmeiro with 3 hits and 3 RBIs. Dan Plesac earns the win in relief. Bonds and Williams hit homers for Missouri.
Game #3:
Missouri 2 Michigan 1
Bonds and Lind with the RBIs for Missouri. Burkett gets the win and goes to 7-13. Ripken hits a homer for Michigan.
Game #4:
Michigan 2 Missouri 1
Michigan scores one in the 8th and 9th innings to win the game. Juan Samuel with a big pinch hit single for Michigan. Sierra hits a homer for Missouri. Henneman with his 20th save.
Game #5:
Missouri 2 Michigan 1 (10)
3rd straight 2-1 game. Darrin Jackson with a pinch hit homer in the 9th for Michigan to tie the game. But, Missouri comes back in the 10th inning with a Sierra triple. Patterson with the win in relief.
Game #6:
Michigan 7 Missouri 2
Chris Hoiles with 2 homers and 3 RBIs to lead the way. Mark Guthrie earns his 1st win of the season. O’Brien hits a homer for Missouri.
Game #7:
Michigan 5 Missouri 2
Barfield with a homer. Key play is a Don Slaught pinch hit single to knock in 2 runs. Jose Lind with 3 hits for the Black Bears
Summary
Michigan scratches out a narrow 4-3 victory in this series.

 

Stockton  Wings @ Portland  Mavericks
Preview
The Stockton Wings fly into Portland facing the first place in NL West the Mavericks. Portland hanging on to a lead of the Floosmoor Flying squirrels by the hair of their chinny chin chin. And you know Portland, beards are like beers, they are everywhere.
Game #1:
Scott Erickson 16-6 3.44 vs Wings vs Ken Hill 10-6 3.58
POR Stockton breaks it open with 4 big ones in the 2nd inning, and then add another in the 3rd. Portland crawls back with 1 in the bottom of the 3rd and then 2 in the 4th, and 1 in the 5th to close it to 5-4 Stockton. In the bottom of the 9th with two one Joe Carter sends one deep into the Portland sky with a three-run walk-off HR for the 7-5 Portland win, his 26th on the year off Dennis Eckersley.
Game #2: Jose Dejesus 8-11 4.12 Wings vs Mike Moore 10-7 4.87 POR

Dejesus and Moore have a regular pitching duel going through 9 shutout innings. Moore continues through 10 for Portland giving up just 2 hits. Dejesus gets removed with no outs in the bottom of the 10th after giving up a leadoff double to Aldrete. Cadaret comes on and picks off Aldrete!

In the 11th, Moore finally has enough and gets pulled after 10.1 innings and 3 hits, chased by a Thompson single. A pair of Portland relieves extends the game to the bottom of the 11th. In the top of the 12th Darryl Stawberry blast a shot way out of the Brewery to give the Wings the lead. Eckersley on again, would Portland
be able to launch another comeback? Nope, 1-2-3 and Stockton gets the win with a 12 inning team shutout.

Game #3: Portland scores first to take a 1 run lead in the 1st on a Will Clark double. PDX strikes again in the 3rd with a Knoblauch double followed by a Polonia triple. Polonia then scores on FC to make it 3-0 Portland. Portland adds another in the 4th. 4-0. Stockton wakes up big time in the 7th, getting it all back with 4 big
ones. 4-4. Back to back singles in the 8th by Portland’s Polonia and Clark start a rally for Portland, which managers one run. 5-4 into the 8th. In the 8th Lavalliere gets a PH solo shot for Stockton continuing the exciting series. Tettleton then goes back to back! 6-5 Stockton. A wild pitch in the 9th would add an insurance run for the Wings, but then wouldn’t need it as Eck comes on to close Portland out and get the save.
Game #4: Doug Drabek 11-9 3.32 Wings vs Charlie Hough 8-9 4.61 POR
A double RBI by Pagliarulo starts the scoring for the Wings in the second. Portland strikes back with a double RBI by Huff. Pagliarulo then blasts a solo shot in the 4th. 2-1 Wings. Huff answers back for Portland with a triple RBI, and a SAC bunt gives Portland a 3-2 lead. Thompson ties it up with a single in the 5th. Heck of a series. In the bottom of the 8th, Portland threatens with Wehner on third and Will Clark up. With the infield in Wehner tries to score… and does! 4-3 Portland in a back and forth affair. Aquino shuts down the Wings 1-2-3 in the 9th as Portland escapes with the win. Series tied 2-2.
Game #5:
Mark Gardner 2-7 4.30 vs Greg Swindell 13-5 2.62 PORT
Mike Huff with the solo shot for Portland starts the scoring. Wilkins say ditto in the 4th for PDX. 2-0. Wilkins then gets another HR, this one a 3-run variety as Portland breaks it open 5-0. Meanwhile, Swindell is pitching a gem for Portland, giving up just 3 hits, and he goes on to complete the shutout in the 5-0 Portland
win.
Summary
Very close and exciting series as Portland managers to take 3 of 5. Stockton looks better than their 57-70 record, like hurt by those dominating California Quakes and very good Fort Worth Panthers.

 

California  Quakes @ Chicago  Demolition
Preview
First place California visits last place Chicago for their final match up of the season.
Game #1: A. Fernandez v. B. Holman

Scoring started early with a leadoff HR from Brett. Down 2-0 in the top of the 2nd, California proceeded to score 5 runs to jump to an early 5-2 lead. It wouldn’t be enough, however. The Demolition scored one in the 3rd and two in the 4th to tie it up. Tied 6-6 in the 8th, Chicago’s G. Carter launched a 2-run HR to put the Demolition ahead for good.

Game #3: T. Gordon v. R. Clemens

California started the scoring in the top of the 2nd with a J. Olerud 2-run HR. Chicago followed up with one run in the bottom of the 2nd and two runs in the bottom of the 3rd to give them a 3-2 lead. Unfortunately, it was a lead that wouldn’t last long. L. Whitaker promptly launched a 2-run HR in the top of the 5th to end the scoring for the evening. R. Clemens 4-run CG just wasn’t enough this time around.

P. Harnisch v. W. Whitehurst

This time it was California with the gem, as P. Harnisch goes 9 innings of 1-run ball. With 2 RBI each, T. Pendleton and HoJo lead the Quakes to a 6-1 victory.

Chicago jumps to an early lead with a K. Daniels two out, 2 RBI single in the bottom of the 1st. Nothing would change until the 8th inning when D. Magadan singled in L. Whitaker to bring the score to 2-1 Chicago. The Demolition answered in the bottom of the inning with a O. Guillen 2 RBI single to widen the gap 4-1. The Quakes’ bats break out in the top of the 9th with a 3 runs to tie the game 4-4, and the Quakes continued the scoring in the top of the 10th to give the Quakes a 6-4 win.

Game #7: N. Ryan v. S. Scudder

N. Ryan going for win No. 280. The Quakes offense started string with 1-run innings in the 1st and 2nd, and a 2-run 5th, usually enough the secure a win for the Ryan Express. But, not this time. Ryan came undone in the bottom of the 6th, giving up 5 runs and the lead. Ryan wouldn’t give up any more runs through 8. Down 5-4 in the top of the 9th, the M. Nokes and W. Randolph each contribute RBI doubles to give Ryan and California the 6-5 lead.
