A costly error for Flossmoor opens the door for a three run fourth by Portland with Clark and Carter doing the damage.
Squirrels get two in the bottom of the inning thanks to a Portland error and its 6-3 after four innings.
In the fifth a Kevin Maas double scores a pair and closes the gap to 6-5, and then Bagwell brings Maas home with two outs to tie it at six.
But Portland comes right back with a two run homer for Carter to re-take the lead.
A leadoff double by Fryman and a single by Bagwell get the Squirrels back within a run after eight.
In the ninth Flossmoor gets the tying run to second with two outs but Baines flys out to end it. Mavs hold on to win it 8-7.
Game #2: Scoreless to the bottom of the 4th when Puckett leads off with a walk and then on a hit and run Ron Gant puts one into the corner for a double to score Kirby. But that’s all the home team gets as Lance Johnson throws out Gant on Bagwell’s fly ball to left. 1-0 after four.
In the bottom of the sixth Teufel leads it off with a solo shot to make it 2-0 Flossmoor. Bichette then singles, steals second, and comes home on a pass ball to make it 3-0.
Boddicker gives way with one out in the 9th to Osuna who shuts the door for the win. Boddicker picks up his 10th win of the season (10-5) with 8.1 shutout innings scattering 7 hits. Avery the tough luck loser falls to 8-7.
Game #3: In the bottom of the first the Squirrels load the bases with two outs and Hough hits Bagwell to force in a run. That was the 17th HBP for Bags. 1-0 FFS.
In the 5th Morandini walks to start it off and comes home on a Bernie Williams double. Bernie moves to third on a wild pitch and comes home on Gant’s sac fly. Baines then follows with a homer to make it 4-0 FFS after five.
Mavs on the board in the sixth with a run on a Wilkins hit but strand a pair.
In the top of the 8th a bad throw lets Polonia on to lead off the inning and then Blauser hits a pop up in foul territory where Karkovice and Bagwell collide. Karko lost for 20 days and Bags out for one. Then Blauser reaches on an error to chase Cone. A fielders choice puts runners at 2nd and 3rd with one out. Flossmoor walks Carter to set up the double play with Zeile up…and Slocumb gets the grounder to get out of the jam.
Plantier leads off the ninth with a homer for Portland and then the Mavs load the bases and with two outs Will Clark clears them. All off the Squirrels closer Olson.
Pena comes in to close it out for a demoralizing loss for Flossmoor.

Missouri  Black Bears @ Manhattan  Gas Hornets
Preview
Missouri Black Bears at Manhattan Gas Hornets – rivals over the past few years, this year they are playing for bottom honors. But promises to maybe be a good series for the fans…
Game #1:
Jimmy Key pretty much dusts off his former teammates – especially after a 2 run HR (12) from Sierra followed by a 3 run homer (14) from Juan Gone in the 1st (1st five batters!). Rogers gives up 4 n the 9th to make it look like a game (Yount 3 run HR (4) part of that mix). Lind also homers for Missouri (4) – a 2 run shot.
MBB 10-18-1 WP Key (4-11) did I mention 18 hits!
MGH 6-11-1 LP Harris (2-8)
Gas Hornet highlight – 3 OUTFIELD assists tossing out Black Bears at the plate (game could easily have been worse).
Game #2:
Black Bears only get 4 run in the 1st in this game (no homers). Then up 5-1 going to bottom of 7th when home team gets 3 – but 4 run Missouri 8th ices the game (Righetti throwing gasoline, 4 hits and walk gives up 3 of those).
Juan Gone gets 3 hits, 3 rbis, Galarraga gets 2 hits, 2 rbis.
MBB 9-13-1 WP Portugal (3-6)
MGH 4- 7-1 LP Petry (3-7)
Game #3:
Matt D. (Williams) drives in 3 as Missouri takes a 5-1 lead after 2. Gas Hornets chips away with single runs in the 5th and 7th and then with bases loaded an 1 out in 9th Abner hits a bases clearing walk-off 3 run double for the comeback win (and some cheer for the home team).
MBB 5- 7-0 LP K.Patterson (0-2) BS Fajardo (1)
MGH 6-12-1 WP B.Patterson (2-3)
Patterson has it covered all over.
Game #4:
Gas Hornets get the 1st lead in this one with a run in the first. But Missouri charges back with 3 in the 2nd including a 2 run Galarraga HR (4). Manhattan gets 3 back in the 3rd on Muelens Baltimore Special (2). Black Bears tie it up in 4th but Gas Hornets score 2 in the 8th to win. Righetti left the gasoline at home and pitched 2 innings, 1 hit ball.
MBB 4-10-1 LP K.Patterson (0-3)
MGH 6- 9-0 WP Righetti (2-4)
Game #5:
Well after dropping 2 straight to those pesky (but weak) Gas Hornets, the Black Bears regrouped behind Ken Gross and won 6-0. Keyed by Bonds 2 run HR (6) and Williams HR (17) an Jose Lind with 3 rbis, it was a cake walk.
MBB 6-11-0 WP Gross (4-2) S Gott (16)
MGH 0- 7-1 LP Stewart (2-13)
Game #6:
Greg Harris survives the 1st inning this time around – in fact he pitches a CG giving up 4 hits and 1 run – Bonds HR (7) in the 8th. But the homer tied the game as Burkett was also tossing a gem. Meulens drives in a run in the 6th (1 of only 2 hits given up by Burkett). 8th inning, Orosoco in, Meulens drives in his 2nd run – created by Dale Sveum’s 2nd error of the game. Harris made the 2-1 lead stand up.
MBB 1-4-2 LP Orosco (1-1)
MGH 2-4-1 WP G.Harris (3-8)
Game #7:
Through 4 1/2 innings it was thought this might be the Juan Gone game as he had knocked 2 solo homers (15, 16) and they were sandwiched around a Lind 2 run double and Sveum rbi single in the 4th. But with the series knotted at 3-3, the Gas Hornets were going to give it their best and had the score standing a 5-4 in the bottom of the 8th with the bases loaded and 1 out, but a 1-2-3 DP ended that threat and essentially the game.
MBB 5-11-0 WP Key (5-11) S Gott (17)
MGH 4-11-1 LP Petry (3-8)
Summary
Black Bears, the better team, took the series 4-3. Both teams have ways to go, but the Bears look to be getting there sooner. Missouri travels to Michigan next week, Manhattan goes to Valdosta to get thumped.
