California  Quakes @ Portland  Mavericks
Preview
The Califorina (sic) Quakes head up the coast to Portland where we love to say… it is OK to visit, but please don’t stay! The Quakes are shaking up the league with a 55-17 record. Portland sits at 43-29, the lowest wins of any division leader. Will the Quakes give Portland fans have foamy beer, or will it be the Mavs who get an upset series win? LET’S PLAY BALL!
Game #1: Nolan Ryan 7-2 1.34 for Cal vs Mike Moore 7-5 4.60 Por Ryan coming to Portland in the limelight of his brilliant career. Even Portland fans like Nolan, with literally a whole binder of Nolan Ryan baseball cards stuck in someone’s attic. 😉
T1 Quakes load up the bases with one out vs Moore, but Knoblauch starts a key DP for the Mavs.
B1 Knoblauch greets Ryan to Portland with a leadoff triple, and then scores on a SF. Will ‘The Thrill’ then spanks of triple of his own, but gets nailed at the plate of a 7-7-2 DP. 1-0 PDX after one.
T3 Quakes load the bases with no outs as Moore racks up five walks already. Uh oh. Johnson singles in one run, and then Pendleton doubles in two as the Quakes start to break it open. Moore loads the bases again on a walk before accidentally throwing the ball over the plate and getting a K. After a SF for the Quakes, the lead 4-1.
T5 O’Neill hits a solo HR for California, extending the lead to 5-1.
T6 Moore already facing is 30th batter for Portland thanks to 7 hits and 8 walks by the Quakes. Portland fans just watch Ryan roll from here… and then Nokes adds a two run HR in the 9th for the Quakes. Just because.
B9 Ryan denies fans a change to given him an ovation by not coming out for the 9th inning. Yeah, we’d do that… it is Nolan freaking Ryan. Farr comes on to close out the Mavs and the Quakes get the 7-1 win.
Quakes 7-9-0 Portland 1-3-0. Ryan moves to 8-2 with the 2-hit win.
Game #2: Greg Harris 4-3 2.51 CAL vs Ken Hill 7-3 3.71 POR
T2 Johnson triples to lead it off for the Quakers, and then Pendleton gets the S RBI.
T4 Pendleton gets a solo HR for Cal. 2-0.
T5 Sweet Lou doubles for Quacks, and then Canseco says ditto. 3-zippo Cali. But no… the Quakes are not done in the 5th adding another on and error. 4-0.
B5 Johnson rips a triple scoring Alomar JR to get Portland on the board. Polonia then rolls the 8 with a runner on third vs the A to get another back. 4-2 Quakes after 5.
T7 Quakes buy some insurance with a FC RBI.
T8 Pendleton hits a solo HR for CAL… and then CAL adds two more to break it break it open like the San Andreas fault. 8-2 Quakes.
Game #3: Tom Gordon 6-2 2.94 vs Frank Castillo 3-0 2.45
B1 Polonia leads off with a double for Portland, but gets nailed by Phillips in RF on a single by Blauser. Ouch. But wait… Ziele smacks a big 3-run homer with 2-outs to give Portland their first lead of the series.
T2 Damn those Quakes… O’Neill sticks a dagger in Portland’s hopes with a two run homer.
T4 Quakes tie it up with a solo HR by Johnson.
T5 Cali does what it usually does, extends the lead. 5-3 Cali.
T7 Johnson gets a 2-run shot for the Quakes! Oh the anarchy. 7-4.
B9 Magadan gets injured grabbing a foul ball in the stands. Rumor is a Portland fan might have taken a swing… but hey… no replay in 1991. Fan gets free beer.So the California Quakes take the first three. Thank GOD this is only a 5 game series.
Game #4: Brett Saberhagen 8-2 1.73 vs Greg Swindell 7-3 3.16
B1 Mavericks lead! Mavericks lead! A two-out double by Carter puts one on the board.
T4 Canseco. Enough said. Ka-boom-shaka-laka. Quakes tie it 1-1. Canseco is on pace for 50 HRs I think. Z
T5 More Quacking going on… Smith gets a double RBI. Ditto Quintana. More assorted fireworks as Quakes score 4 in the inning and appear to put another one in the bag. I would call them shoplifters… but they are paying with cold hard awesomeness. It is no fluke; this team is something to behold.
T6 Quakes score again without flexing a muscle. 6-1.
B7 Portland loads the bases and Saberhagen gets yanked. Felipe Hernandez fearing the dreading 5-run HR. Portland actually managers to score 2, cutting the lead to 3.
B9 Portland gets one more but Cali gets the 7-4 win. Mercy!
Game #5: Pete Harnisch 9-2 3.71 CAL vs Charlie Hough 5-6 4.26 POR
A starters in four of five games? Are you F*c3ing kidding me? Let me tell you how this is going to go down. Hough walks a lot. Quacks hit 2 homers and 3 doubles and win 8-1.T2 Quakes get two runners on and Uribe gets ejected! For fear.
B2 Portland gets TWO… somehow… someway. I wasn’t watching. Or remembering.
B3 a triple RBI by Aldrete scores Clark. 3-0 Portland. Could it be?
T4 Whitaker says no so fast Portland with a solo shot into a red solo cup.
B5 SF RBI Portland scores again 4-1.
B6 Portland again… this time a 2-out double by the Knobber. 6-1 Portland. PUT AWAY THEM BROOMS CALI!
B8 Portland puts it away with two more capped by a 2-out double by Knoblauch. Portland wins Portland wins! 8-4
Summary
The Quacks shake Portland up with an 8.4 earthquake. It would have been worse had it not been for the Russian judge. Portland licks its wound. Quakes  are now 59-18, while Portland drops back to 44-33. Quakes #1 in the league in pitching, HRs, and walks at the very least. You have a heck of a team George… enjoy it. 66’s

Michigan  Marauders @ Manhattan  Gas Hornets
Preview
Michigan invades Manhattan – both teams not in the big hunt, Michigan maybe entertains wildcard hopes. Manhattan gave up 20 runs last week – in ONE GAME! These teams were in competition in previous years, but ….
Game #1:
Dan Petry was in rare form going 9, giving up 8 hits and 2 runs. He was well supported via Shawn Abner (3 for 4, HR(1), 2 doubles and 2 rbis) as Gas Hornets take the opener 6-2. Samuel gets 3 hits in the loss, Murphy (6) goes yard for the 2 runs.
MIC 2-8-1 LP Nagy (4-6)
MGH 6-11-0 WP Petry (2-3)
Game #2:
Pitching, Pitching, Pitching!! (or poor hitting, poor hitting, poor hitting). We’ll go with the 1st, it’s a positive. Milacki goes 7 innings giving up 3 hits, fanning 8 and no runs. Welch does him 2 better going 9 with 4 hits and no runs. Game ends 0-0 after 9, so it’ FREE baseball. Free baseball only last until the bottom of the 10th as Tim Crews gives up a walk, a hit, and a 2 out rbi single from Felder as Gas Hornets take it 1-0.
MIC 0-5-0 LP Crews (0-1)
MGH 1-7-2 WP Patterson (1-1)
Game #3:
Michigan takes early lead, Jackson HR (11) in the 1st and DeShaies rbi single in the 2nd make it 2-0. Manhattan gets 1 back in the 5th but then erupt for 4 in the 6th and they exploit a Cal Ripken error for 4 unearned runs. Crews blows the save and takes the loss. Felder and Huson get 2 rbis.
MIC 2-8-1 LP Burke (3-4), BS (3)
MGH 5-8-1 WP Harris (2-6), S Patterson (3)
Game #4: Gas Hornets take 3 straight, stop the presses – fans come out in droves for game 4 – and again, it’s FREE BASEBALL as game goes 11 innings. Mauraders open the game with 4 in the 1st keyed by a Brunansky Baltimore Special (5). after a Gas Hornet 1 run 2nd, Michigan gets it back in the 3rd. Tino Martinez, who got the rbi in the 2nd then hits a Baltimore Special (2) of his own in the 4th and it’s 5-4 Michigan. Yount drives in the tying run in the 7th and it’s into extras! This time the fans get 2 extra innings, but they go home deflated as Palmeiro explodes for a 2 run shot (13) in the 11th to win it for  the Mauraders.
MIC 7-13-2 WP Guetterman (2-2), S Henneman (14)
MGH 5-5-0 LP D.Jones (3-3)
Game #5:
Michigan now has a groove on and they carry it into game 5. Borders homers (5) in the 2nd but Manhattan gets it back in the 4th. Tight pitching continues as Gullickson and Ashby battle – but with the game still 1-1 in the 8th, Ashby runs out of steam and Ripken takes him over the wall (13) for a 2 run shot. Burke keeps the score at 3-1 for the save.
MIC 3-9-0 WP Gullickson (7-7) S Burke (2)
MGH 1-6-0 LP Ashby (1-3)
Game #6:
Things are reverting back to normal for the 1991 Gas Hornets. Hoiles drives in 1 in the 1st for the visitors, but the Gas Hornets awaken and plate 3 in the 2nd. Then the Maurades get a Brunansky solo HR (6) in the 4th, but the Gas Hornets double that in their half. Each team adds one more run but Rhodes and Patterson keep the Gas Hornets on top.
MIC 3-10-1 LP Nagy (4-7)
MGH 6-7-3 WP Petry (3-3) S Patterson (4)
Petry wins his 2nd game of the series!!
Game #7:
Mauraders definitely not thrilled with results so Milacki tries toss a no-hitter. He gets close giving up his 1st hit in the 6th, his 2nd in the 8th. Bob Welch broke up the no-hitter. However, he had walked 5 by then and an error kept things interesting as he worked out of lots of jams. But he leaves in the 8th giving up NO runs. Crews kept it that way. Meanwhile, Hoiles gets 3 hits, Ripken hits a solo HR (14) and the 10 Maurader hits and 3 walks produce 4 runs of support.
MIC 4-10-1 WP Milacki (4-8)
MGH 0-2-0 LP Welch (1-9)
Summary

DESHIELDS rounds third … they’re waving DESHIELDS in here comes the throw home here’s the play at the plate … and he’s … out!…just missed getting in. Oh, those, DEMOLITION … they have cut off the winning run and the aggressive baserunning does not pay off DEMOLITION 4,  PANTHERS 4” In the 10th inning Boggs put Chicago back into the lead with his 25th double of the year, but Fred McGriff would tie the game again in the bottom of the 10th for the Panthers with his 11th homer of the year. Willie McGee has the walk off winner in the bottom of the 9th, “TIMLIN delivers … poked to left center … base hit … that could be trouble LARKIN and CUYLER converge … and it’s through … it’s all over! … CUYLER doesn’t even bother FERMIN scores. And that’s it! … the PANTHERS have won it!”.

Game #2:
Alomar triples leading off again, and Jose drives him in again, and then Caminiti hits a 2-run bomb in the second. DeLeon and two relievers (Frohwirth with the save, #20) hold on for a 3-2 Germantown win and an end to the Skeeter streak.
