Summary
Chi beats up on Det 4-1; Det also puts Big MO Vaughn on the DL

Missouri  Black Bears @ Sugar   Land Skeeters
Preview
First-place Sugar Land hosts division rival Missouri for a seven-game set.
Game #1:
Randy Bush goes 3-3 with a HR and 3 RBI, Dave Hollins hits a 3-run bomb, and Joe Hesketh pitches eight scoreless as Sugar Land shuts out the Bears, 7-0.
Game #2:
Kevin Tapani keeps the Bears shutout again for eight innings, but the bullpen coughs up a run. Biggio with three hits, 10-1 Skeeters.
Game #3:
Hollins hits another HR and the Skeeters maul the Black Bears, 13-2. Tommy Greene injured and bullpen works hard for Skeeters.
Game #4:
Missouri comes from behind against the Skeeters’ ace, Mark Langston. Skeeters leave 11 on (13 hits, 4 walks). Sierra and Matt WIlliams (10) hit HRs. Biggio with 4 hits. 4-3 Bears.
Game #5:
Hesketh struggles this time, but Missouri can’t hold a 6-3 lead as the Skeeters pile it on, 11-7. Junior goes 3-5 with 2 HR (10) including a Salami and 7 RBI.  Buechele, Bush, and Bell (my own killer B’s!) also hit homers.
Game #6:
Tapani struggles as well, and Missouri holds on this time for a 7-4 win. Bielecki gets the win without striking anyone out. Not much for the highlights. Bonds with 2 Sac Flies.
Game #7:
Emergency starter Mercker (he had four in ’91; why didn’t he get a split grade??) goes eight strong, allowing a run on two hits with ten Ks. Again, no highlights, unless you count Pasqua getting hit twice. Skeeters win, 6-1.
Summary
Tommy Greene injured for 13 games. . please put him on the 15-day DL. With that change we’ll be set. (I already added a player) Sugar Land wins five of seven. Griffey had 12 RBI but only eight hits.

Stockton  Wings @ Fort Worth  Panthers
Preview
Coming into this series Ft. Worth was closer to their opponent – Stockton (5.5 games) than they were to AL East division leader California (11 games)On the league leader boards the Wings are 6th in AVG at .245, second best in homers with 62, and 3rd in slugging. For the Panthers they are first in AVG at .265, 4th in home runs with 47, 4th in runs scored per game, 2nd in slugging, 4th in stolen bases with 42, 2nd in OBP and second in ERA at 2.93
Game #1:
Mussina dominates for the Wings while every offensive player for Stockton gets a hit.
Final Score: Wings 5, Panthers 1
Game #2:
Stockton’s offense was clicking early in game two as they built a 4-2 lead, but McGriff ties the game for Ft. Worth with a 2 run homer in the 3rd then Deshields puts the Panthers ahead for good with a 2 run homer in the 4th.
Final Score: Panthers 6, Wings 5
Game #3:
Brown was wild and hittable for the Panthers as he walked 6 and allowed 7 hits in only 5 innings of work. Despite a three homer attack in a come back attempt Stockton holds on.
Final Score: Wings 8, Panthers 6
Game #4:
Both pitchers managed to keep wiggling out of trouble as the both walked 5. The difference proved to be a solo home run by Calderon for Ft. Worth.
Final Score: Panthers 2, Wings 1
Game #5:
Ft. Worth wins the game in the bottom of the 9th on a throwing error by Schooler, “* D. DESHIELDS facing M. SCHOOLER, B 9th, No Outs, Runner on 1st, Tied 3-3 They’re holding MILLER … but he’s well off the bag … and MILLER takes off … here’s the pitch rapped back to the mound … and he spears it! … over to first … and it gets by MCCLENDON he’s chasing it down … DESHIELDS takes a big turn … MILLER’s around third … headed for home MCCLENDON doesn’t see him … now he does … the throw … safe!”
Final Score: Panthers 4, Wings 3
Game #6:
Wegman and a trio of relievers held Stockton to 3 hits while Joyner, who would go 4-4 with a HR and Deshields provided most of the offense.
Final Score: Panthers 2, Wings 1
Game #7:
Wally Joyner leads the Panther offense going 3 for 3 with a homer and two RBI as the Panther’s take the finale. Joyner closes out the series with 9 straight hits.
Final Score: Panthers 4, Wings 3
Summary
Ft. Worth takes the series 5 games to 2. Five of the games were decided by one or two runs and each team won 1 game easily. Wally Joyner hits .560 during the series going 14 for 25 with 4 doubles, 4 home runs, and 6 RBI. Incredibly he had two games where he didn’t get a hit.

Montana  Cutthroats @ California  Quakes
Preview
3rd place Montana Cutthroats head west to take on 1st place California Quakes.
Summary
Montana outscored the Quakes 22-20 in the 7-game series–a series dominated by pitching. Montana looked very strong, taking the first three games of the series, but California squeaked by in some very close games to take the series 4-3. The AL East is going to be tough ’til the end. Montana heads south to Fort Worth while California visits its friendly neighbor (Mexico City) in its first stop on a LONG 4-series road trip.

Valdosta  Bombers @ Manhattan  Gas Hornets
Preview
Valdosta comes to Manhattan for a short 7 game series (OK not so short). Valdosta is currently in 2nd in the AL East – but with a losing record. Everyone is waiting for Sugar Land to exert itself. Manhattan frankly is lousy – but on paper, the pitching staffs of these two teams don’t look too different, but the Bombers definitelyhave a bullpen edge. Could be an exciting series (or an offensively boring series).
Game #1:
Bob Welch in 1991 is not the Welch of 1990. But he does last longer that Bob Walk of Valdosta in this game. Unfortunately for the home team, Walk got the win – and he even got a walk that produced an rbi. In fact, the 3 run 6th for Valdosta was not as the result of any BOMBS, but it was the result of several of Welch’s 7  (SEVEN) walks. Nixon (2 hits), Treadway and Van Slyke each had 2 walks in the game.
VAL 5-11-1 WP Walk (4-4) S Brantley (6)
MGH 3-7-0 LP Welch (1-5)
Game #2:
OK – was this stellar pitching or pathetic hitting. Probably a combination of both. Two CG performances, Young of MGH gives up 3 hits (and 7 walks) and Browning of VAL gives up 5 hits (and 5 walks). The lone run of the game came about as a result of an error by Kurt Stillwell as Valdosta wins game 2.
VAL 1-3-0 WP Browning (5-4)
MGH 0-5-1 LP Young (0-4)
Game #3:
Another 1 run game as the two teams again fail to produce much offense. But there is a bomb in this one as Sid Bream hits a solo homer (7) and it was a game winner. Wilson (VAL) and Stewart (MGH) were brilliant (or the batters were lacking). Treadway gets 3 hits. The game featured ONLY SIX WALKS (3 for each team).
VAL 2-9-0 WP Wilson (1-0) S Brantley (7)
MGH 1-4-0 LP Stewart (2-6)
Game #4:
Gas Hornets actually hit 2 homers in this came – Tino hits his first Manhattan homer in the 2nd to tie the game and Chris Gwynn hits his 1st (a 2 run shot) in the 5th to win the game. Valdosta managed 9 hits (2 from Nixon and Van Slyke) and FIVE walks, but managed only 1 run!
VAL 1-9-0 LP B.Smith (5-5)
MGH 3-6-0 WP Gardiner (2-8) S Patterson (2)
Game #5: 19 runs and 35 hits in this game – where did that come from. And the Gas Hornets actually win it. But they do blow an 8-2 lead and actually have to score a run in the 9th to win it, 10-9! Manhattan gets 5 in the 1st including a 3 run C.Martinez homer (2). But after getting an 8-2 lead through 6, Manhattan tried to give Leary some time on the mound. He got it – 6 batters, but only 1 was an out. 4 hits, 1 walk and 5 runs – including 2 homers BOTH TO VAN SLYKE in the SAME INNING (2,3). He ends up with 4 hits and 3 rbis. That 5 run inning got the Bombers to within 1 run (8-7 MGH). Gas Hornets got some insurance in their half, but Valdosta scores 2 in the 9th (Doug Jones can’t shut them down). But Santiago is able to come though in the bottom of the 9th to drive in the game winner in a very intense game – blowout, miraculous comeback, and then redemption.
VAL 9-20-1 LP Burba (2-1)
MGH 10-15-0 WP Jones (3-2) BS Jones (2) Wow 2 wins for the home team!
Game #6:
Valdosta gets up quickly with a Treadway 2 run shot (1)in the 1st (Nixon leads off and gets on, Treaway blast). They add a 3rd run in the 3rd. Manhattan gets 1 back in the 4th another in the 6th. Going to the 9th, Bombers hold a 3-2 lead, and Manhattan feels they still have a chance. Well Arthur Rhodes goes well in the 8th, but in the 9th he gives up a 3 run jack (7) to Wes Chamberlain and that sunk the Gas guys. Walk gives up 5 hits and 4 walks in the 5.2 innings but gets the win.
VAL 6-8-0 Walk (5-4)
MGH 2-6-1 LP Welch (1-6)
Game #7:
The only drama in this game was how long could Browning go before giving up a hit. A pinch-hit double by Jacoby in the 7th was the only Gas Hornet hit in the game. Browning – 9 ip, 1 hit, 1 walk, 3 ks, NO RUNS!  Treadway 3 hits, rbi, Finley 2 hits, rbi, Olson 2 hits, rbi. 4 run 4th was more than enough.
VAL 5-12-0 WP Browning (6-4)
MGH 0-1-1 LP Leary (0-1)
Summary
Browning might end up as pitcher of the week. Two starts, 2 CGs, 6 hits total, 6 walks, 7Ks and NO RUNS – and 2 wins. Valdosta gets 5 wins – Manhattan gets TWO!!!! Yeah!!!! Bombers stay on the road going to Michigan and there record is now at .500 at 30-30. Gas Hornets go on the road to Sugar Land, it should pad the Skeeters record.

Game #7:
Flossmoor really needs this one if they want to stay close in the AL West, and leave no doubt that they are in it to win it with a 7-0 win. Maddux and Edwards combine for the Floosmoor shutout.
Summary
Flossmoor drops one more back of Portland to currently stand 3 games back. Portland’s losing record at home have fans wondering if the manager is hitting too much Microbrew before the games, but they still stand on top of the division.
