2nd place Michigan ventures west to tangle with the Cougars of Clovis.
Game #1:
Knudsen pitches like Randy Johnson and Johnson pitches like Mark Knudsen, resulting in a 3-1 Michigan win.
Game #2:
Nagy keeps the good vibe going despite his lowly ‘3’ starter grade in shutting down the Cougars 4-1.
Game #3:
Marauders Jackson and Ripken go deep to support Mark Langston’s well pitched 4 hit CG shutout, 5-0.
Game #4:
Michigan wins 4th in a row, 5-4 as Jackson and Murphy go deep to give Gullickson the win.
Game #5:
Clovis spared from the embarrassment of a sweep at home by taking the last game 2-0. Reed drove home a pair in the 8th, both starters, Wells and Higuera, were superb but neither figured in the final result.
Summary
Clovis beaten badly by Michigan outscored 17-8. Next week Michigan continues its road trip with a journey to the bright lights and big city of Manhattan while Clovis tries to regroup before a trip to the always tough Steel City.

Janesville loses a heart breaker, as Mitch Williams gives up two runs in the top of the ninth to give Chicago a 2-1 victory.
Game #2:
Chicago’s big bats come to life as the rap out 18 hits winning the game 10-1.
Game #3:
Janesville commits five errors and gives up five unearned runs losing game three 12-6.
Game #4:
Barnes is masterful for Chicago, going the distance in a one hit 6-0 victory.
Game #5:
The final game of the series is again all Chicago, as their starting five prove too much for Janesville. Another fantastic pitching performance, as Stieb goes the distance in yet another one hit 9-0 victory.
Summary
Janesville bats go silent, and a great pitching performance by Chicago is the story behind their 5-0 series win. Chicago visits the Fort Worth Panthers next week while Janesville hits the road against the Cedar Park Bears.

Detroit put up a five-spot in the 2nd inning, and then held on for the win. Parker had 4 hits and 3 RBI for Detroit.

Stockton scored in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th, and 7th. Walker had three RBI and Lavalliere and Oester had 2 each for the Wings. Parker’s bases-loaded double in the 7th made it interesting.

Stockton jumped out to a 3-0 lead but saw two different pitchers give up three bases loaded walks in the 2nd inning to tie it. Detroit jumped out to a 6-3 lead on a Parker RBI double in the 4th and RBI hits by Parker and Franco in the 6th. Stockton tied it on RBI hits by Walker and Thompson in the 8th. The bullpens took over until the 15th when Walker won it with a walk-off single.
Summary
Stockton takes the series 3 games to 2.Larry Walker had 3 HRs and 9 RBI for the WingsDave Parker had 10 RBI for Detroit

 

California Quakes @ Montana Cutthroats

California visits Montana for a battle of the 2nd and 3rd place teams looking to get a playoff berth this season.
Game #1:
Lonnie Smith Grand Slam gives California a 5-0 lead. They hold for dear life as Montana gets to within one and fall short.

Ellis Burks gets 3 doubles as Montana holds California to 6 hits in win.

Kelly Downs throws 3-hit CG shutout as he outduels Rich Delucia. Montana scores only run in 7th. Stubbs walks, steals second, and then scores on Alvin Davis RBI single.

Gregg Jefferies and Brian Downing lead California to a 7-4 come from behind win.

Nolan Ryan and two relievers combine for the shutout win. Glenn Davis homers for the victors.

Game #6:
Ramon Martinez is virtually un-hittable. He goes distance with 2 runs on only 1 hit. Strikes out 11 and walks only 1. His only blemish was a walk to Maas followed by 2-run HR by Borders.

Brian Downing and Pat Borders hit homeruns to lead California to the series win.
FINAL – CAL 5 MCT 2
Summary
Another close series between these two evenly matched teams. However, California seems to be just a bit deeper of a team. They take the series 4 games to 3 and extend their lead over the 3rd place Cutthroats.
