Long Beach Titans @ Germantown Grays
Preview
A series of the haves (Long Beach 26-13) and the have not’s (Germantown 17-24).
Game #1:
Viola (5-1) gives up 3 hits on the way to a 4-1 Titan victory. Fielders smacks 2 homers early collecting 3RBIs
Game #2:
Boyd (7-0) stymies the Grays only giving up 1 run through 6 innings on the way to a Titan 4-2 win. Weiss banged a go ahead 2-out 3-run double in the 7th further frustrating Aguilera’s miserable year and ruining Smoltz’s 2-hit gem that was a no-hitter until the 7th. Grays Griffey was 2-2 with a double upping his average to .444.
Game #3:
Grays win one as Finley gives up 1 hit and 2 walks over 8 innings in a 1-0 victory. Felix Jose banged in the only run in the 5th inning.
Game #4:
Grays pop a 4 spot in the 3rd, but the Titans come back with a 5 spot in the 5th only to be followed by a Grays 3 spot in the 6th. That’s how it would end, 7-5 Grays. Grays Martinez was 4-4 with 4 RBIs and a double. Titans Justice and Weiss both banged out a pair of hits collecting 2 RBIs apiece.
Game #5:
Grays bats are working early again scoring 5 in the 1st. Grays Gagne went 2-4 with a double homer and 4 RBIs. Titans Ripken was 3-5 with 3RBIs and a homer. Grays win 8-3
Game #6:
Grays Smoltz’s again is superb until late giving up his 2 runs in the 8th on a Fielder homer. The Grays respond with 2 in the bottom half on a McRae 2-run double to preserve the 3-2 victory.
Game #7:
Boyd (8-0) avoids a Titan disastrous series with a complete game 5 hit shutout. Finley (5-4) was not shabby either going 6 and allowing 0 earned runs.  Billy Ripken had a couple hits and RBIs with a double.
Summary
Grays showing a little promise at Long Beaches expense. Alomar (.189) and Aguilera (6.05) still struggling mightily.

Game #5:

Chicago Demolition @ California Quakes
Preview
2nd place California Quakes host 1st place Chicago Demolition.
Game #1: Stieb v. RyanTwo former teammates meet up to open a big series between the Demolition and the Quakes. Neither was spectacular. Ryan gave up 3 ER in 6 IP and Steib 4 ER in 6.2 IP. This game was decided by the offenses and bullpens. The Demolition relied on the long-ball, with Kal Daniels, Darrel Strawberry, and Eric Davis (all Dodgers …) hitting home runs but plating only 4 runs between them. The Quakes didn’t hit a HR, but relied on a lot of hits in one inning—the 7th—scoring 4 runs to take a 6-3
lead.CHI – 4

CAL – 6

W – Klink (1-1)

L – Stieb (5-2)

S – Frey (6)

Game #2:
Stewart v. EdwardsCalifornia got on the board first in this one, with RBI coming from newly acquired Lonnie Smith and John Olerud in the bottom of the 3rd inning. That’s all Edwards would need as he pitched his best game of the season: 7 IP, 1 H, 0 R.CHI – 0

CAL – 3

W – Edwards (3-3)

L – Stewart (3-3)

S – Frey (7)

Game #3: Drabek v. FarrChicago jumped out to a huge lead, 7-1 by the top of the 3rd. The Quakes promptly remove Farr after giving up 7 runs (6 earned) in 2.1 innings, and began to replace several starters to ensure the bench received adequate playing time. This proved wise. While the Quakes offense never gave up, it was not able to erase this early deficit. In all, the damage was done by the back end of the Demolition offense, with the 5-8 batters doing nearly all of the damage: Boggs 2-5, 2 RBI; Scioscia 2-3, 2 RBI; Guillen 2-5, 2 RBI; Larkin 2-5, 3 RBI. Drabek was awful, going 4.2 innings while giving up 10 hits and 6 runs … but not as awful as Farr.CHI – 10

CAL – 6

W – Olin (2-0)

L – Farr (4-4)

S – Eckersley (9)

Game #4: Clemens v. GardnerEasily the best game of the series. Both offenses were evenly matched: Demolition with 10 hits and 2 HRs, Quakes with 10 hits and 3 doubles. This one was a seesaw battle that wouldn’t be resolved until 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th inning. The Quakes jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st, but the Demolition eliminated the deficit with a 4-run 4th and a 1-run 6th. Tied 5-5 in the bottom of the 6th, the Quakes promptly jumped ahead with a Whitaker RBI. The Demolition bounced back in the 8th with an Eric Davis 2-run HR, giving the Demolition a 7-6 lead. California answered back in the bottom of the 9th. Canseco stuck out for the first out. It’s been that kind of year for him. Jefferies singles to right and steals 2nd to put the tying run in scoring position. Borders, pinch hitting for Sasser, grounds out and fails to move Jefferies over. With 2 outs, Lou Whitaker doubles home Jefferies to tie the game. With a runner on 2nd, Olerud pinch hits for Terry Steinbach, and knocks a game winning dribbler up the middle; Whitaker comes around to score the winning run in grand fashion.CHI – 7

CAL – 8

W – Harvey (1-1)

L – Howell (0-3)

Game #5:
Brown v. RyanAn anemic Quakes offense (3 hits, 1 run) falls to a less anemic Demolition offense (7 hits, 3 runs). Eric Davis was the star in this one with 2 hits, including a solo HR, and 2 runs scored. Kevin D. Brown earns his first win of the season (career?).CHI – 3

CAL – 1

W – Brown (1-0)

L – Ryan (6-3)

S – Howell (3)

Game #6:
Stieb v. EdwardsJefferies’ solo HR (his 1st of the year) and RBI double in the 1st and 3rd gave the Quakes the lead they would need to take down the Demolition. Jefferies finished 3-4 with 2 RBI, while Edwards had his 2nd best night of the year pitching 7 innings of 1-run ball and bringing his ERA down to 3.79.CHI – 1

CAL – 3

W – Edwards (4-3)

L – Stieb (5-3)

S – Frey (8)

Game #7:
Stewart v. FarrFarr pitches his first shut out while Stewart gets the tough-luck loss. The game came down to the bottom of the 9th. California had just one hit going into the 9th when Paul O’Neill walks, advances on a Whitaker ground-out, and moves to 3rd on a Mackey Sasser single. With 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th,  the Wizard of Oz smacks an RBI single to bring home the winning run.CHI – 0

CAL – 1

W – Farr (5-4)

L – Stewart (3-4

Summary
California shocks the Demolition by taking 5 of 7 against the division leader. Two of these wins were 2-out walk-off wins, so the series very easily could have gone the other way.

Clovis Cougars @ Manhattan Gas Hornets
Preview
Clovis Cougars – a good power house team in the strong NL West (but currently holding down 3rd place with a record of 26-19) come to Manhattan (24-17), currently in 1st in the NL East – but struggling of late. Cougars have feasted on NL East meat this year (9-1) and hope to brighten their chances in the West. Gas Hornets seek to right the ship before big trip to the face the Sluggers next week (but no one is looking ahead!!).
Game #1:
Rick Reuschel (L 0-1) makes his first start of the year (coming off 2 great years, but early season stiffness has kept him on the farm working on strengthening). All looked well for him until a Russell error in the 4th lead to 4 unearned runs (5 run in total). Righetti didn’t help, giving up 3 in 1.2  innings and the Cougars pounced mightily on the Gas Hornets 9-3. Harris 3 hits, 2 rbis. R.Henderson a 3 run HR (11), Murray a HR (7) and Greenwell a 2  run shot (5). Wells (W 5-3) goes 8 strong innings, 5 hits, 3 runs. Santiago the lone bright spot for Manhattan with 2 hits (triple and HR [3]) and 2 rbis.
Game #2:
Harris again has good day, 3 hits, Greenwell joins him in the 3 hit club and Clovis scores 2 in the 1st and 2 in the 4th. McReynolds gets 1 back with  lead-off HR (4) in the 2nd. Gas Hornets tie it with 3 runs in 6th including a Yount 2 run HR (4). Starter Randy Johnson and Tim Leary leave, each with ND.  End of 9 still tied 4-4. Bottom of the 12th, York on the mound, 1 out, Huson PHs and singles. Dawson then steps in an doubles, Huson scores, game over.  Manhattan the 5-4 winner in 12.
WP D.Smith (2-0), LP York (0-1)
Game #3:
Murray hits a 2 run HR (8) in the 1st – Gas Hornets liked it better when Eddie would lean into pitches for a hit batter – this HR thing has to stop. Welch settles in however after the 1st, goes 6 more innings and gives up nothing else. [He faces 27 batter in 7 innings and record NO (zero, 0, zip, nada)  strikeouts] He leaves after 7 but when his teams scores 1 in the 4th and 3 in the 6th, he comes out the winner (7-2), especially when D.Jones goes 2  scoreless innings for the save 3). McCaskill goes 5.1 innings, 5 hits, 4 runs, 4 walks and gets the loss (4-4).
Game #4: Little bit up and down, definite nail-biter. Henderson opens the game with HR (12) – now there’s a novelty. Gas Hornets equal and pass that in the 2nd  with 3 runs (including a Dawson lead-off HR [5]. Another in the 3rd makes it 4-1 Manhattan. 6th inning, Henderson hits another solo shot (13) and Harris  drives in 2 to tie the game 4-4. Bottom 7th, 2 outs PH Felder singles. Crawford comes in, Sax doubles one past a diving Henderson, Felder scores, 5-4 Gas  Hornets. Righetti (2-0, BS #1) gets the win after giving up the lead. Henke gets the save (3) pitching 2 perfect innings to earn it. Black gets the loss (6-3).
Game #5:
Smiley (7 ip) and Greg Harris (6.2) duke it out and both do well. All scoring over by the end of 4. Barfield opens the scoring with a solo shot in the 2nd  (10). A James rbi single and a Thon error lead to single Gas Hornet runs in the 3rd and 4th and that was the game as the starters and bullpens kept  everyone scoreless after that. Smiley got the tough loss (1-1) giving up 6 hits, 2 runs (1 earned) and 3 Ks in 7 innings. Harris got the win (2-4), 4 hits, 1  run. D.Jones got the save (4) – 2 innings, 1 hit, 2 walks, some excitement along the way.
Summary
Gas Hornets prevail 4-1 in a tough fought series in which four of the games easily could have gone the other way (which could have been a Cougar sweep).Clovis home to face Germantown, Manhattan goes to Steel City.
