1989 AMERICAN LEAGUE DIVISION SERIES #2
Chicago Demolition @ Detroit Stars
Preview: American League West Champions the Detroit Stars will take on the American League East Wild Card Winner the Chicago Demolition in a 5 game Division Series Match up.
Game #1: Roger Clemens (16-9 3.22) vs. (23-6 2.38)
This one turns out to be a instant classic made for ESPN. Both pitchers are throwing bullets & mowing down the opposition. It’s scoreless through 7 innings. In the bottom of the 8th, Clemens gives up a solo shot with two outs to Stars big man Dave Parker. Gubicza heads out for the 9th allowing only 4 hits & 1 walk thus far. Gibicza goes the distance, and the Stars prevail in what is surely one of the best pitched Division Series games ever.
Final Score: Detroit 1 – Chicago 0
Game #2: Dave Stieb (16-5 2.78) vs. Jose DeLeon (21-6 2.30)
This isn’t the close one that game #1 was, but it was scoreless for one team.
Stieb throws 6 scoreless innings & a cast of characters from the Chicago bullpen (Six of them) throw the final 3 innings scoreless. Chicago gets 2 RBI’s from Kal Daniels & single RBI’s from Wade Boggs, Darryl Strawberry & Mike Scioscia.
Final Score: Chicago 5 – Detroit 0
Game #3: Ed Whitson (19-10 2.98) vs. Orel Hershiser (13-13 3.26)
Chicago gets 2 run in the 1st, 3rd & 4th along with a solo run in the 7th. Eric Davis 2-Run Home Run was big for the Demolition but the 3 errors that the Stars made were their downfall.
Final Score: Chicago 7 – Detroit 3
Game #4: Mike Bielecki (18-12 2.71) vs. Doug Drabek (20-7 2.52)
A 1 to 1 tie after 6 innings has another nice pitchers duel going for both clubs. Chicago gets 1 in the 7th and then a 2 run blast (HR) for Darryl Strawberry in the 8th closes the door on the Stars season.
Final Score: Chicago 4 – Detroit 1
Summary: Chicago takes the series 3 games to 1, with Detroit scoring only 5 runs in the series. American League Wild Card Chicago will now take on the American League West Wild Card Winner Mexico City Chihuahuas in the American League Championship Series.
