Long Beach Titans @ Manhattan Gas Hornets
Series Preview
Long Beach Titans cross the country to face the NL East leading Manhattan Gas Hornets for a 5 game set.
Game #1:
Scoring started in the 2nd with a Joyner solo HR (11) and ended with his 2 run shot in the 8th (12) as the Gas Hornets take the opener 5-1 behind 2 hit pitching from Garrelts (W 15-1). One of the 2 hits was a solo HR from Magadan (9) in the 8th. Oliveras (1-4) takes the loss. McClure the save (19).
Game #2:
Gas Hornets continue to outscore the Titans plating 6 runs to support Clary (8-3) in a 6-2 win. Wilson and Magadan contribute 2 hits each but it wasn’t enough as Downs moves to 0-9 with the loss. Manhattan homers from Yount (19) and Jacoby (8).
Game #3:
Anomoly of the year maybe. Tom Gordon takes another loss (3-18) for a guy who’s a 14 grade starter (with a W). The final score was 4-1. But here’s the rub – the Titans took a 1-0 lead in the 2nd on a Chet Lemon HR (6). Then in the 3rd the Titans commit a couple of errors when they should have gotten out of the inning and the Gas Hornets score 4 run – ALL unearned. And that’s the final. Gordon not only has a dismal record, but of the 80 runs he’s allowed this year, 23 of them are UNEARNED.Ballard goes 7 innings, 3 hits and 8 ks for the win (12-5), Henke the save (19).
Game #4:
After a day off, the series resumed with the tightest game of the week. Titans score REAL early as Bragg leads off with a solo shot (8) off Reuschel. Gas Hornets claw back to tie the game in the 4th scoring one off Viola. Game goes to the 8th still tied when McReynolds drives one across with a double and Henke comes on to close out the game in the 9th (S 20).
WP Reuschel (15-3) /LP Ward (8-5)
Game #5:
Mike Scott was 1 out away from pitching back to back shutouts when Mel Hall takes him out of the park (11) for a 2 out solo shot. Scott does end up tossing 2 consecutive 3 hitters tough and the Gas Hornets win the finale 4-1. Single run in the 1st and then a 3 run bases loaded double by Dave Anderson in the 7th iced the cake. Scott moves to 12-9 with the win, Robinson drops to 4-16.
Series Summary
Manhattan sweeps the 5 games and then loads the dugout for September. 2 guys will get a lot of time playing in September but they expect to be in the running for roster spots next year (barring crazy trades of course over the off-season – that never happens).

Cedar Park Bears @ Detroit Stars

WGE 1 VAL 0
Game #4:
Turn about is fair play as Valdosta as ace Candiotti (16-4) wins 1-0 vs Hanson. Teh young power righty Hanson season ended at an amazing 9-7 with a 1.99 era in 140 innings pitched.
Game #5:
Calderon hit a game winning two run hoemr off walk makign Ted Power the winner in a spot start, WGE 4 VAL 2
Series Summary
Valdosta does take the series 3 to 2 but probably wanted a bit more.  Winnipegs young pitchers Glavine, Moyer, Hanson and Benes have done a great job this year for the Goldeyes who should improve over last years record win total. .500 should come in 1990

Janesville Juggernauts @ Montana Cutthroats
Series Preview
A battle of 4th place American League teams as Janesville and Montana meet up in Big Sky Country.
Game #1:
Lots happens with the bases loaded. Bobby Bonilla gives Janesville a seemingly insurmountable lead with a grand slam in the 5th. But Montana pulls it out with a bases loaded clearing double from Tom Herr with 2 outs in the 9th.
FINAL – MCT 7 JJG 6
Game #2:
Montana gets early lead as Mark Parent’s single with the bases loaded clears the bases thanks to help with an error. Janesville climbs back with a two run HR from Bobby Bonilla. But Les Lancaster shuts the door on Janesville’s come back attempts to save game for Bill Krueger in his first appearance of the season.
FINAL – MCT 7 JJG 6
Game #3:
Again, bases loaded situations hurt the defense. Danny Tartabull singles in two with the bases loaded in the top of the 3rd to give Janesville a 2-1 lead only to see Albert Belle hit a grand slam in the bottom of the 3rd to put Montana up 5-2. Belle adds another two run shot in the 8th as Montana runs away.
FINAL – MCT 9 JJG 2
Game #4:
Unlike the first three games, not much doubt about this one.  Janesville starter Bob Welch throws a complete game 3-hit gem to lead them to a win. The bats for Janesville do the job as well getting 6 runs on 10 hits.
FINAL – JJG 6 MCT 0
Game #5:
Janesville and Montana trade runs in the 3rd but Montana takes the lead in the 5th for good on Gallagher’s infield single and then pile on two more in the inning for a 4-1 lead. Pitchers dominate the rest of the way as the two teams trade single runs.
FINAL – MCT 5 JJG 2
Series Summary
Montana takes the series 4 games to 1.
