Valdosta Bombers @ Manhattan Gas Hornets
Series Preview
Valdosta Bombers (33-20, 2nd Place AL E, 1 GB) at Manhattan Gas Hornets (33-18, 1st Place ALE). Feeling the explosive heat of the Bombers, the Gas Hornets went out and reworked their rotation (at the expense of a very favorite player – so what’s new?)! Will it pay off. Rotation and bullpen have been retooled (as well as a few other pieces) the last couple of weeks as the reality of another pennant looms. What have I done? …
Game #1:
Part of the Scott duo, Scottie Garrelts gets the start in his first game in the Manhattan pinstripes and he responds with a 3 hit, 1 run performance over 7.1 innings. The Gas Hornets put up a 3 spot in the 1st – Dawson’s 10th HR, and Garrelts, McClure (new guy) and Henke (S7 – another recent addition) made it stand in a 3-1 victory.  Robinsion pitched well (if he could erase the opening frame) but took the loss (6-3). Garrelts is now 7-0 on the season.
Game #2:
Long time Gas Hornet ace Rick Reuschel (OK, this is his 2nd year, but that LONG) got the node in game 2, goes 7 innings gives up 4 hits and 2 runs and wins a 6-2 victory to run his record to 7-1. He was up 4-0 before giving up a solo shot to Heep (5) in the 6th, and up 6-1 before yielding another run in the 7th. Dawson again goes yard (11) and gets another 3 rbis in this game.
Game #3:
Manhattan scores 2 in the 1st, another in the 3rd and makes it work again behind the stellar pitching of recent acquistion Fernando Valenzuela (W 5-1) as they win 3-1. Fernando goes 6 innings, 4 hits, 1 run, bullpen again gives up nothing (Jones, Worrell, McClure and Henke – S8). All of them newbies. Oquendo goes 1 for 1 and walks 3 times in the game (all from Valenzueal. Browning pitches well, 6.2 ip, 4 hits, 3 runs.
Game #4:
The other half of the Scott duo, Mike, gets the start in this game.  Last year he closed out the Gas Hornets season in the playoffs, then he gets 2 new uniforms. Gas Hornets like him. In his first Manhattan start he gives up a 2 run HR to Heep (6) in the 4th that tied the game, but then shut the Bombers down. His team retook the lead in the 5th, padded it in the 6th and won the game 5-2. Yount hit a HR (6), which was the game winner. WP Scott (4-6), S Henke (9), again.  LP Candiotti (8-1) suffers his first loss giving up 7 hits and 5 runs in 6 innings.
Game #5:

Bryn Smith vs. Jeff Ballard (on the MGH roster at the start of the season). Neither starter figured in the decision but both pitched well. Smith goes 6 innings, 6 hits, 2 runs, 4 Ks – gave up 1 in the 1st and 1 in the 2nd – the first inning run was a HR by Kevin McReynolds (3) also a new comer). The 2nd inning run was a HR by Mark Carreon (1), also a newcomer.

GAME ODDITY – Bombers score 2 runs in the first without an RBI or any errors. How? Redus singles, goes to 3rd on H&R single by Fletcher. He
then scores on a WP. 1 Run. Davis then singles, Fletcher goes to 3rd. Downing up, bounces into DP, run scores. 2 runs, no errors, no rbis,
there you have it.

OH the game outcome… After Smith (6 ip) and Ballard (8 ip) leave, the bullpens do some great stuff sending the game into extra innings. Game
finally ends on a McReynolds single in the 12th (3 hit of the game and 2nd rbi) with the infield drawn in. FINAL MGH 3, Val 2. WP Doug Jones (1-0), LP John Franco (1-4)

Game #6:
Robinson vs. Garrelts rematch. Garrelts wins this one too (8-0) going 8 innings, 2 hits, 0 runs. Henke pitches the 9th (2 walks, 2 Ks) for the save (10). Robinson again pitches great – 7.2 innings, 4 hits, 2 run – but Jacoby hit a solo shot (3) in the 2nd, and another run in the 8th seal the deal. FINAL MGH 2 Val 0. Robinson falls to 6-4 with the loss.
Game #7:
Terry vs. Reuschel in game 7 and Manhattan wins another shutout.  This time 1-0 – and the 1 run was driven in in the 5th on a Reuschel single. Each team manages 6 hits – Reuschel gives up all 6 in 6.2 innings, bullpen again stifles the Bombers with Henke picking up save 11. Terry gives up 5 hits in 6 innings and 1 run, but picks up the tough loss (3-4).
Series Summary
Pitching was the key for Manhattan in this series as they sweep the 7 games. Offense about par for the course, so they will need the pitching to carry them. Bombers dug themselves a hole, but the season is still young, so nobody is counting them out (or anyone for that matter).
