Clovis Cougars @ Manhattan  Gas Hornets
Series Preview
The Clovis Cougars (22-23) visit the big Apple for a 5 game set with the Manhattan Gas Hornets. The GHornets waking up to the reality that they might actually have a playoff chance this year have bolstered their bullpen, rotation and backstop areas and hope this will help make the post season a 3 year adventure.Clovis boasts a very solid rotation that should be creating a lot of problems and winning them a lot of games.NOTE: Bad blood, is there still some bad blood between these teams, seems like Eddie Murray was always stirring things up …
Game #1:
Randy Johnson wins the #1 Star award here (if it were hockey), tossing a 5 hit shutout over 7.1 innings for his first win (1-2). He was followed by Cougars bullpen strength – David Wells who fanned 3 in his 1.2 innings a saving relief (S 3). And Eddie Murray hit a SF in the 6th for the only run in a 1-0 Clovis victory. Jeffcoat (0-1) took the loss, he’s had little run support this year.
Game #2:
Gas Hornets break out the whopping sticks in this one with a 17 hit attack – 11 off starter (and loser 3-4) Ken Howell. The 17 hit attack included only 1 homer, Dawson (7) – and that was a PH solo shot. Game was tied 5-5 in the 6th, but a 3 run 6th and 4 run 8th put it out of touch. Jones made his first Gas Hornet appearance.
Game #3:
Close game as Black and new Gas Hornet Valenzuela took shutouts into the 6th. Fernando kept his, but Black gave up 3 runs including a 2 run Jacoby double. Clovis gets one back in the 7th, but that was it – Henke gets his 1st Manhattan save (S 5) as Gas Hornets win 3-1. WP Valenzuela (3-1), LP Black (4-4).
Game #4:
Tim Leary keeps the Gas Hornet pitching dominance going tossing 7 innings of 5 hit, 1 run ball, fanning 7. He received support in the form of a 2 run Dawson HR (8) and Tim Jones (double, triple, rbi).
Final score was 4-1 Gas Hornets.
WP Leary (5-2), S Righetti (2), LP Bankhead (2-4)
Game #5: Series finale features another strong pitchers’ duel. Smiley goes 7 innings, 6 hits for the Cougars – but he gives up 2 runs including Dawson’s 3rd homer of the series (9) – a solo shot. Joyner provided an rbi single for the other run. This was all the offense Manhattan could generate – however, it was enough. Ballard goes 8 inning, 2 hits no runs. He gives way to Henke in the 9th who ends up giving up a walk that ended up in a run scored when Robin Yount dropped the 3rd out on a routine fly to CF. Ernie says that’s the kind of thing that will cause Manager Bill Schindel gray hairs – boy is that the truth. However, Henke got the next batter to end the game. Final 2-1 Manhattan.WP Ballard (4-3), S Henke (6), LP Smiley (4-5)
Series Summary
Manhattan takes the series 4 games to 1. Clovis score just 1 run in 4 of the 5 games (winning 1 of them 1-0).Next week the Gas Hornets go on the road to face NL West leader Steel City, the heat is turning on early …

Long Beach Titans @ Germantown Grays
Series Preview
Two long time rivals in the National League West.
Series Summary
Finley (2-0) 13.1IP 2R 5H and Smoltz (1-0) 14IP 3R 6H as Germantown takes the series

Winnipeg Goldeyes @ Sugar Land Skeeters
Series Summary
Winnipeg takes four of five from Sugar Land, losing only on a walk-off HR by recently promoted Lombardozzi.

Janesville Juggernauts @ Fort Worth Panthers
Series Summary
Ft. Worth sweeps, but 4 of the games were close.

Chicago Demolition @ California Quakes
Series Preview
Division rivals California and Chicago face off in the first of several key series.
Series Summary
Chicago pummels California, taking 5 of 7 games. Canseco’s 11-game injury didn’t help, but I don’t know that it was the deciding factor. Most of the games were decided by 1-2 runs, but the losses leave California 6 games back only a quarter of the way through the season.

The Bears rallied again in the bottom of the 7th scoring 4 runs by taking advantage of another error by the Wings. Only one run was earned.

(W) Boddicker 4-3, 3.36 /(L) Leiter 3-3, 8.38
Game #5:
Kent Hrbek (12) hit a 2-run HR in the 6th to give the Wings a 2-1 lead. The Bears relied on team speed in the 9th to tie it as Puckett singled, stole a base and scored on Will Clark’s double. In the 10th, Polonia singled, stole 2d and Dwight Evans singled to score the winning run and the Bears pulled out another close one from Stockton.
Final: Cedar Park 3 – Stockton 2 (10 inn)

Montana Cutthroats @ Traverse  City Tigers
Series Preview
Two struggling teams go at it from opposite divisions in the Montana Cutthroats & Traverse City Tigers. Last year was a different story,
in which I believe the winning Tigers had their way with Montana.
Game #1:
Dennis Cook strong in 8-inning performance, allowing only 2 runs, for HR’s. Les Lancaster picks up Save #8.Cotto & Bichette with HR’s for T.C.
MONTANA 3, TRAVERSE CITY 2
Game #2:
Walk-off base hit for Bob Boone in the 10th. Dante Bichette hit 2nd HR in two days. Les Lancaster for Montana gets blown save & lost, as
John Wettleland wins with 3 Innings of relief, 2 K’s.
TRAVERSE CITY 4, MONTANA 3 (10 Inn)
Game #3:
Greg Maddux looked more like Maddux we know, and not the Maddux we have seen early in this 1989 season; He still allowed 3 walks, but pitched effective with 2 runs allowed in 8 innings. He picks up win #2 (Improving to 2-5, 4.37 ERA).Mike Flanagan falls to 1-8 already.Dante Bichette hits his 3rd HR of the series (matching his real-life totals in 1989 already), Greg Brock hits HR#7, as he leads the Tigers in long-balls this season.TRAVERSE CITY 4, MONTANA 2
Game #4:
It was all Ramon Martinez in this one, going the distance, allowing only 4 hits in this shutout performance of the Tigers.
Brian Harper hits his 4th HR of the season for Montana, as he goes 2-for-5 with 2 RBI.
MONTANA 4, TRAVERSE CITY 0
Game #5:
All the scoring in this game came in the 3rd inning, as both teams left a combined 17 men on base, for a low score.Les Lancaster picks up his 9th Save, Clay Parker improves to 4-3 (3.23 ERA), while Andy Hawkins, although 0-3, has a season ERA of 3.00.
MONTANA 2, TRAVERSE CITY 1
Series Summary
Cutthroats with an edge over T.C., 3-2
