Steel City Sluggers @ Manhattan Gas Hornets
Series Preview
Opening day and the bunting is out on the railings throughout the Gas Hornets stadiums as the last season NL Division winners square off for 5 game series to start the 1989 season. Steel City had the  upper hand last year 6-4 in their 10 games, how will it be this year? A buzz is in the house ….
Game #1: Saberhagen gets the nod for Steel City and Ballard gets the nod for Manhattan – Cy Young winner Rick Reuschel will make his 1989 debut in game 2 (blisters).Petralli quickly gets Steel City on the board with a solo shot (1) in the first. Gas Hornets get it right back in the bottom half on an O’Neill double – Joyner was held at 3rd. On the next play Joyner is cut down at the plate trying to score on a Dawson grounder – might be key.Top of the 8th – still 1-1 – and Esasky goes deep off Reardon for 2 run HR (1) and a 3-1 lead. Plesac comes in and mows down the Gas Hornets in
order in the 9th for the save.FINAL 3 -1 Steel City, WP Saberhagen (1-0). S Plesac (1), LP Reardon (0-1)
Game #2:
Magrane vs. Reuschel and the Gas Hornets score first with a run in the 1st. Grace and Sandberg bag ribbies in the 3rd to gain a 2-1 lead that last only until the bottom half when Manhattan ties it up. In the 6th Nick Esasky pounds his 2nd HR of the season (solo) and the Sluggers regain the lead. But in the bottom half, the Gas Hornets plate 3 (a Dawson 2 run double the key blow) and it’s 5-3 for the home team. Reuschel, McWilliams, Righetti and Smith make that stand.FINAL 5-3 Manhattan. WP Reuschel (1-0), S Smith (1), LP Magrane (0-1)
Game #3: Tim Belcher vs. Jimmy Key – Key takes a 1-0 lead and into the 5th before giving up a single to Thon and a 2 run HR (1) to Dave Henderson.
Down 2-1, the Gas Hornets retaliate with a 4 spot in the bottom half including a 3 run bomb by O’Neill (1). Steel City comes back with 2 in the 6th on a 2 run shot from Esasky. – 3 game, 3 HRs! On a pace for 162!Manhattan gets those 2 back in the 6th and an insurance run in the 7th for an 8-4 lead. Good thing because the Sluggers put together a charge
that results in 3 runs. It started with a Thon solo HR (1). Finally it ended when Smith came (with no outs and 2 in and 2 on). He gave up a hit allowing the 3rd run, but then got the Sluggers out. And again got them out in the 9th for the save.FINAL 8-7 Manhattan WP Key (1-0), S Smith (2), LP Belcher (0-1)

O’Neill 5 Rbis in the game.

Game #4: Dennis Martinez vs. Tim Leary – 1st inning scoring from Steel City, 2 runs, Manhattan 1. Steel City’s scoring included an rbi double from Sandberg. Well, the home team scores 1 in the 3rd and 2 in the 4th and felt pretty good about the game … until Steel City put up 4 spots in the 6th AND 7th to blow the game open 10-4. Gas Hornet bullpen was pretty gassed from the previous 2 games and Steel City took full advantage. Included in the onslaught was a solo shot by Sandberg (1) and a 3 run HR (2) from Dickie Thon.Did I mention that Sandberg hit a triple in the 3rd? He was later tagged out in a rundown when he tried scoring on a grounder.BUT in the 4 run 7th it started when Sandberg singled . THE CYCLE!Up 10-4 Steel City went on cruise control (or in football they call it prevent defense, which often translates to “prevent a win.”). Manhattan scores 3 in the 8th and they put on a rally in the 9th that falls short as they only score 1 and lose by 2.

FINAL Steel City 10-8 WP Martinez (1-0), S Plesac (2) LP Leary (0-1)

Fisk goes 2 for 4 with 3 Rbis.

Game #5: Series finale features Pascual Perez against Mike Jeffcoat (making his Manhattan debut). Gas Hornets get 1 in the 4th and Jeffcoat is enjoying
a no-no as the 5th starts but a single to Esasky ends that and then a 2 run HR to Thon (3) ends that. Thon and Esasky each have 3 HRs already.
But that is all the Steel City scoring. But Pascaul keeps going getting stronger and stronger and leaves for a pinch hitter in the 8th still up 2-1. Orosco takes over and gets the Gas
Bees in order in the 8th. But in the 9th it’s a different story. Sax leads off with a double. Joyner bounces a slow one to Thon that moves
Sax to 3rd, 1 out. O’Neill up, Sax on third, Infield drawn in …Orosco looks at third … the pitch … grounded to short … THON dives and he’s got it! … spins…fires to first … safe! … the throw’s off the bag … SAX scores … tie ballgame! … and they give O’NEILL the hit. Orosco is lifted for Burns, Dawson comes up and doubles scoring O’Neill and it’s all over.FINAL 3-2 Manhattan WP Reardon (1-1), LP Orosco (0-1), BS 1
Series Summary
Good series with Manhattan squeaking through with a 3-2 series win. Pitching looks a bit more suspect than last year as they team has chosen SO FAR to lay low. But who knows what the upcoming weeks will hold.Manhattan hosts Sugar Lland next week, Steel City hosts Germantown.

Long Beach Titans @ Clovis Cougars
Series Preview
Opening day, when hope springs eternal!
Game #1:
Clovis 5 Long Beach 2Cougars right-hander Scott Bankhead draws the opening assignment and tosses 8 strong innings for the Cougars. Bankhead gives up only 1 run along with 4 hits while striking out 5. Bankhead also drove in the first run for the Cougars who plated 3 in the second to provide the margin of victory before adding single runs in the 3rd and 4th. Mel Hall belted a homer for Long Beach.
Game #2:
LB 2 CLC 1Tom “Flash” Gordon bests John Smiley in a close, well played contest. Gordon went 7 for the victory while Smiley took the hard luck loss despite 10 strikeouts. Lemon doubled with one out in the 8th and scored when Noboa singled him home to give the Titans the lead and chase Smiley.
Game #3:
CLC 8 LB 3Long Beach scored a pair in the first on a Incaviglia double but Clovis countered with a 4 spot in the opening frame to give McCaskill a lead he would never relinquish. Inky would knock in another run for the Titans in the 5th but Clovis hung another 4 on the scoreboard in the 7th to seal it. Jeff Robinson not only took the loss for Long Beach but was tossed in the 5th after complaining a bit to loudly about the tight strike zone.
Game #4:
CLC 5 LB 1The Cougars built a 5-0 lead by the 4th inning and cruised to the easy victory behind the strong arm of Ken Howell who has moved  into the rotation and proved today that he belongs. Howell was not spectacular, just steady, which is all Clovis will ask of him this season. Glenn Wilson homered for the Titan’s only run.
Game #5: CLC 2 LB 0The Clovis defense, and Rickey Henderson in particular, made a winner of Bud Black who was masterful pitching into the 8th before Lamp and Myers took over to seal it for Clovis. The Titans were robbed on three occasions by Cougar leather; first was Dan Gladden who went up over the fence to rob Chet Lemon in the 5th. Then in the 7th with the tying run at third and the go ahead at 2nd Rex Hudler fisted a little flare into right that Jim Gantner turned into an over the shoulder catch and then a game saver when he turned and fired to Reed at 2nd to double off
Incaviglia who clearly thought the ball would drop. In the 8th with Clovis up now 2-0 Oliver lead off with a double for the Titans and Lemon hit a screamer down the left field line, Henderson cut it off and launched a perfect throw to keep Oliver stuck at third. with runners now at 1st and 3rd, Vaughn walked in a pinch hitting role to load the bases with one out. Weiss came up as a pinch hitter in the pitchers spot and drove one deep to left that Henderson corralled at the track and then unleashed a laser beam of a throw to hold Oliver for the second time. Titan’s manager Buck Miller was livid that Oliver had not challenged Henderson’s much maligned arm and sent instructions out to not let it happen again. The writing was on the wall for Black who was clearly gassed and the call went out for Dennis Lamp to put out the fire with the bases now jammed with only one out. Braggs hit one out to the back peddling and very busy Henderson who snagged the ball for the second out and fired over the cutoff man to nail Oliver at the plate for a double play and to end the inning. Myer’s picked up for Lamp in the ninth to earn the save with three quick outs.
Game #6: CLC 4 LB 3 (10 innings)Clovis was hanging on to a 2-1 lead behind Bankhead in the 8th when Boston homered to tie it. Magadan followed with a base hit, incaviglia was hit by pitch, Hall followed with a FC eliminating Inky and sending Magadan to 3rd. Wilson’s ground out scored Magadan and gave the Titan’s the 3-2 lead. In the 9th the speedy Lenny Harris got to 3rd for the Titan’s with 1 out when Ward drove one deep to right that Gladden ran down and then nailed Harris at home trying to score for the inning ending double play. Then with 2 gone in the ninth who should come to the plate but Gladden who lined a double into the gap in right, Gantner followed with a sharp grounder to Harris for what should have been the game but he fired right past Wilson at 1st and Gladden scampered home to tie it. In the 10th Harvey struck out the side for Clovis to give them a chance to win it. Henderson led off with a single, and stole second, Reed was walked intentionally, Barfield struck out, and Murray topped a perfect double play ball to Harris who booted it to load the bases and give Jeff Hamilton the chance to be a hero which is exactly what he did when he drilled a McCullers fastball into right to send Henderson home with the game winner.
Game #7:
CLC 7 LB 4In a rematch of game two Smiley got the best of Tom Gordon with 6.2 strong enough innings. Clovis scored a pair in the 2nd, added 1 in the 5th, and broke it open with 4 in the 6th off of Mark Eichhorn. Weiss hit a pinch homer for the Titan’s first run. Long Beach added 3 in the 7th to chase Smiley but the strong Clovis ‘pen shut the door the rest of the way out.
Series Summary
In the opening series of the season Clovis takes 5 of 6 against a rebuilding Long Beach team.Henderson was the clear star for the Cougars reaching base an impressive 19 times over the 7 games and scoring 9 times. Henderson piled up 4 doubles, one homer, 6 steals, and 4 RBI not to mention some VERY impressive defense, particularly game 5 when he just took over in the 8th with a pair of very good catches and 3 ncredible
throws, the last to nail a runner at the plate and end the inning and the threat in effect saving the game.
