Michigan Marauders @ Steel City Sluggers

Series Summary

season.

California Quakes @ Fort Worth Panthers

Series Summary

The Quakes close out the 1988 season on a positive note by taking 5 of 7
from Ft. Worth. One of the few bright spots occurred in game 3 for the
Panther’s when long time fan favorite Mario Soto won his final MWWL
start. Soto had already announced he would be retiring at the end of the
season.

Sugar Land Skeeters @ Valdosta Bombers

Series Preview

Two second division teams hook up for the final series of the year.
Bombers Don Sutton and Bruce Sutter announced their retirement effective
after the series.

Series Summary

Bombers take 6 of 7 from a struggling Skeeters squad. Bruce Sutter even
picked up his final big league win in the series.

Missouri Black Bears @ Manhattan Gas Hornets

Series Preview

Missouri Brown Bears (94-61, 2nd NL East) at Manhattan Gas Hornets
(100-55, 1st NL East). Division title at stack although the only thing
needed in the 7 game series is one Manhattan win – so the word on the
street is a lot of players may get rest.

Game #1:

Champagne is still on ice the Black Bears pull off the 5-1 victory
behind the 5 hits CG outing from Mike Krukow (7-4). 7 different Black
Bear batters got a hit apiece and 5 different guys drove in a run apiece
in the all around team support of Krukow. Leary failed to win game 20 (L
19-7).

Game #2:

Well the celebration finally can begin as Pete Smith (8-6) and Dave
Smith and Jeff Reardon (S 43) combine for a 3 hit 2-0 shutout. You could
hear the pop from anywhere in Manhattan when this one ended. Yount (2
hits) and Schofield drove in the runs. Doug Dascenzo was 1 for 3 in
stolen base attempts! Youmans the tough loss (3-6, 5 hits 6 innings).

Game #3:

Danny Cox improved to 6-3 in a 10-3 romp (single runs by the Black Bears
in the 8th and 9th made it look a bit closer than it was). 16 hit Gas
Hornet attack supported Cox (and 3 others). Interesting hitting: Jody
Davis in a rare appearance goes 2 for 4 with 3 rbis and HR (1), Kenny
Williams in his first at bat of the season goes yard (1). Yount also HR
(11).

Dewey Evan, Mark Salas and Keith Moreland each had 2 hits for the Black
Bears. Jack Morris took the loss (12-6) lasting 3.2 innings.

Game #4:

Gas Hornets improve to 3-1 for the series with a 4-1 win. All 5 runs in
the game were scored in the 3rd. Moreland (3 hits) drives in 1 with a
double. Reuschel drives in the equalizer in the bottom half, then Yount
hits a SF to get the Gas Hornets up 2-1 and then Dawson goes yard (26)
for 2 more runs.

Reuschel pitches 5 for the win (28-7), Reardon picks up save # 44.
Musselman (7-5) takes the loss.

Game #5:

Missouri had enough of the losses and took a 1-0 lead into the 7th
inning where they promptly added some insurance – about 7 runs worth.
Gas Hornet starter Doyle Alexander took the loss (1-1) but only gave up
1 run (and that one was unerned). But Price and Hudson opened up the
flood gates in the 7th as the Black Bear batters went berserk. Evans
ended up 3 for 5 with 2 rbis, Salas was 2 for 5 with 3 rbis (and HR #1).
Greenwell had 3 hits in the 13 hit attack.

Bailes gets the win (1-0) allowing 2 hits in 8 innings, Perry pitched
the 9th (gave up a hit.

Game #6:

See-saw contest. 3 Black Bear runs in the 3rd were answered by 4 in the
bottom half. Black Bears tie in the 4th, Gas Hornets retake the lead 5-4
with a run in the 5th. Missouri calls and raises one in the 7th on a 2
run Pecota HR (1). It’s now 6-5 Missouri. That lasted until the bottom
half of the 7th when the Gas Hornets tied it up. For the 2nd game in a
row an itchy Gas Hornet started cam on as a one, while the itchyness
didn’t seem to both the hometeam. Game ends in 10 when Aldrete hits a
grounder with 1 out and Bass on 3rd. The play at the plate could not
stop Bass and Manhattan wins 7-6. WP Mirabella (3-4), LP Henke (5-5).

Game #7:

Another 1 run game as the scrubs duke it out. A 1 out single by Davis in
the bottom of the 9th with a runner on 3rd plates the winner in a 6-5
Gas Hornet victory. 3rd game in a row in which the Gas Hornets started
an itchy grade 1 starter. Krukow started for Missouri – but gave up 7
hits and 5 runs in 5 innings this time around.

Both teams plated 2 in the 1st, Manhattan added 3 in the 5th on 3 run
O’Neill hr (10). But Missouri got them all right back in the 6th to tie
it up until the Davis single in the 9th broke the tie. WP Righetti
(7-2), LP Gibson (7-4).

Series Summary

Series finale – 5 games to 2 favor of Manhattan. For the Black Bears
they finished 3rd in the divsion and most likely will start against the
Gas Hornets in the post season. Michigan with their outing at Steel City
they week sneaks into 2nd place the NLE. (Steel City/Michigan probably
outing – after just playing them this week).

Great season – congrats to John, Mike and Kevin on their seasons in the
NL this year. And to all for another great season of historical
baseball. And thank you to Stray for again running a GREAT ORGANIZATION!

Janesville Juggernauts @ Traverse City Tigers

Series Preview

The Traverse Tigers enter the last series with a one-game division lead
in the American League West. With Cedar Park visiting the red-hot
Chicago Demolition, Tigers figure that 3 wins in their last series
against Janesville should do the job.

Game #1:

The Tigers outhit Janesville 9-3, yet still could not win this ball
game. Two of the Juggernauts’ runs came off solo HR’s by Rob Deer & Ray
Knight (who hit his first of the season).

Eric Show for Janesville pitches a complete game shutout with 5 K’s & 3
walks, 9 hits allowed.

FINAL SCORE: JANESVILLE 2, TRAVERSE CITY 0

Game #2:

Both starting pitchers were right on top of their game (Dave LaPoint &
Bob Welch), especially LaPoint who was pitching a no-hitter through 6
2/3 that got broken up by Danny Tartabull with a single. Tartabull had
both of the Juggernauts’ two hits.

This one goes extras with LaPoint pitching all 12 innings for T.C.,
while Welch goes 11, Mitch Williams would give off a lead-off triple to
Ernie Riles, which would end up being the winning run with Lance
Johnson’s sac fly to right.

The Tigers once again outhit their opponents, but played as if they were
going to give up another game.

Word from Chicago, Cedar Park won their first game, Tigers still up by a
game with this win.

FINAL SCORE: TRAVERSE CITY 1, JANESVILLE 0 (12 Inn)

Game #3:

Pete O’Brien of the Tigers hits a two-run single off of David Palmer
jump-started led to a 4-run inning for Traverse City. Palmer would
settle down for the next 5.2 innings to try to give his team a chance to
get back into the game. Joe Carter added two-run double.

Greg Maddux was not exactly sharp with only one K, allowing 2 walks and
6 hits in 6.1 innings.

Brian Holton gets his 17th hold, while Doug Jones records his 36th save
of the season.

FINAL SCORE: TRAVERSE CITY 4, JANESVILLE 2

Game #4:

broken up in 7th) to earn his 10th win, finishing 10-16 with a 4.95 ERA
for the season. Hassey broke up the no-no with a double.

Two-run single for B.J. Surhoff (JJG) & Larry Sheets had two hits with
an RBI.

3.2 innings.

FINAL SCORE: JANESVILLE 6, TRAVERSE CITY 1

suspects Joey Meyer, Jesse Barfield, and Nick Esasky hit
back-to-back-to-back HR’s off of reliever Eric Plunk.

Game #6:

Janeville’s Eric Show after pitching a complete game shutout, pitches

get their team’s 6 hits. The Tigers once again outhit their opponents
13-6, yet lost the game

Joey Meyer went 2-for-3, RBI double & run for Tigers in losing effort.

FINAL SCORE: JANESVILLE 5, TRAVERSE CITY 4

Series Summary

Janesville wins the series 4-3, but news from Chicago, the Demolition
took the Cedar Park Bears in their series, 4-1. Making the Traverse City
Tigers the A.L. West Division Champs for rookie Manager Shawn Baier. The
Tigers (then Legends) were 20-16 when Baier took them over, they would
go 30-5 in the next 35 games! They would have a tougher time in the
second-half, and momentarily fell to second place, but with some shrewd
trades and changes along the way, the Tigers will be continuing on into
the playoffs.

The A.L. West will have three playoff teams in Traverse City, Cedar Park
Bears & the Detroit Stars, while the A.L. East’s Chicago Demolition won
115 games, and has the top record in the entire Mid-West Winter League.
